Warner and Bairstow's departure will be a 'big loss' to Hyderabad team: Kane Williamson

Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will lead the Hyderabad team <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-ipl-2019-match-41-chennai-super-kings-vs-sunrisers-hyderabad-at-chidambaram-stadium-212979">against MS Dhoni-led Chennai</a> on Wednesday as their regular captain Kane Williamson has returned home due to personal tragedy.&nbsp;

As per the reports, he is likely to return to the squad ahead of the team's next match against Rajasthan on April 21.&nbsp;

Earlier in the season, Kumar had led the team earlier also when Williamson was unavailable due to a shoulder injury.&nbsp;

Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hasan has replaced Williamson for the match against Chennai.&nbsp;

Also, Manish Pandey has been added to the playing XI at the place of Shahbaz Nadeem.&nbsp;

Chennai have lost two matches in a row and they would be slightly under pressure when they clash with in-form Hyderabad at their home turf.&nbsp;

Despite two consecutive losses, Chennai still sit pretty at the top of the points table with 14 points from 10 games.&nbsp;

But it will be a tough ask for them against Hyderabad, who would be riding high on confidence after their comprehensive victory against Kolkata.&nbsp;

New Zealand opted for experience in a 15-man squad named Wednesday for this year's cricket World Cup, with rookie Tom Blundell's inclusion as back-up wicketkeeper the only real surprise.

The Black Caps hope to shed their tag as valiant losers and claim the title after exiting in the semi-finals six times and suffering a heavy defeat to Australia in their only appearance in the final four years ago.

New Zealand is currently third in the one-day rankings, behind England and India.

Coach Gary Stead said the Kane Williamson-led side had repeatedly excelled at the top level and he was confident the consistency would shine through at the tournament in England and Wales.

"We've got a squad here of 15 players that we think can give us a really, really good chance of going far into the tournament," he said.&nbsp;

"If we play close to our potential, then hopefully we can do New Zealand proud."

Wellington keeper Blundell was selected after Tim Siefert, the regular back-up to first-choice gloveman Tom Latham, broke his finger in a domestic match last month.

While Blundell, who has two Test caps, will likely make his one-day international debut at the tournament, his role will be marginal if Latham stays fit.

Mitchell Santner will be the New Zealanders' primary spinner, with Ish Sodhi edging Todd Astle to claim the second slow bowling position.

"(Selecting) the spinners was very tough, and both had signs at times that they should've been the one that was selected... but at the end of the day that's my call to make," Stead said.

The pace attack comprises Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry, while Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme add all-round options.

Henry Nicholls is set to open the batting with veteran Martin Guptill after displacing Colin Munro at the top of the order, although Munro will make the trip as batting cover.

Williamson and Ross Taylor, in his fourth World Cup campaign, complete a battle-hardened batting line up.

Williamson, Taylor and Guptill have collectively amassed 526 ODI appearances between them.

Guptill and Taylor have not confirmed their post-tournament plans but will most likely be looking to exit cricket's biggest stage on a high.&nbsp;

The Black Caps will open their campaign against Sri Lanka in Cardiff on June 1.

Opting to bat, Rajasthan&nbsp;posted a mammoth total&nbsp;of 198 runs with the help of&nbsp;Sanju Samson's second IPL century but his ton&nbsp;went in vain, as chasing a mammoth 199-run target, Warner set up the platform for Hyderabad with a breezy 69 off 37 balls and together with Jonny Bairstow (45 off 28) added a century stand for the opening wicket to spoil Rajasthan's day.&nbsp;

Apart from Warner, skipper Kane Williamson (14) and Vijay Shankar (35 off 15) played aggressively to bring down the equation within reach but three quick wickets, that too in consecutive balls of Shreyas Gopal (3/27) in the 16th over, changed the complexion of the game.&nbsp;

But Yusuf Pathan (16 not out) and Rashid Khan (15 not out) played sensibly to overwhelm the target with ease.

IPL 2019, Hyderabad vs Kolkata: Players to watch out for

Injured Kane Williamson could sit out the third Test against Bangladesh beginning Saturday in Christchurch and might have to delay his departure for the Indian Premier League (IPL), New Zealand said Tuesday.&nbsp;

Captain Williamson suffered a shoulder injury while fielding in Bangladesh's first innings of the second Test in Wellington, which New Zealand won on Tuesday by an innings and 12 runs.&nbsp;

Coach Gary Stead said scans had detected a tear to Williamson's left pectoral minor muscle in his shoulder.&nbsp;

"There's obviously irritation and a wee bit of bleeding, it's not a major injury," Stead said.&nbsp;

"We're hopeful that he will recover quickly, and the thing for us is to make sure he doesn't aggravate it any more. He will come to Christchurch and we will make an assessment there on whether he plays."&nbsp;

With the series already won, Stead said New Zealand would take a "safety first" approach, particularly with this year's World Cup on the horizon.

"No player wants to give up their spot in the Test team. But I think it's safe to say that we will probably err on the conservative side, and if there's any chance of risk then we're likely to pull him from that game."&nbsp;

Williamson had suffered considerable discomfort while batting, although he managed to score 74.&nbsp;

He did not take the field for Bangladesh's second innings with Tim Southee taking over the captaincy.

Williamson is due to fly to India after the Bangladesh series to join up with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the money-spinning Twenty20 IPL.

"If things progress as we hope, then still going to the IPL shouldn't be a problem to him," said Stead.&nbsp;

"But he's also aware that if he's not quite 100 per cent, then we will potentially hold him back as well and make sure that he is right before he goes on that plane."

Victory early on the fifth day after the first two days were lost to rain gave New Zealand an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the series and ensured they would end the season with an International Cricket Council cheque for $500,000 as the second-ranked Test side behind India.

Injured Kane Williamson in doubt for third Test, may delay IPL departure

New Zealand's captain Kane Williamson closed in on his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli, having narrowed the gap with the table topper by reaching a career-best 915 rating points in the ICC rankings for batsmen in Tests.

India skipper Kohli continued to top the chart with 922 points while Cheteshwar Pujara was placed third with 881 rating points.

Williamson's 200 not out, which earned him the Player of the Match award, has lifted him from 897 points to within seven points of India captain Virat Kohli, who is perched at the top of the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings with 922 points. With two more Tests to go in the series, Williamson has a chance to regain the top spot, which he occupied briefly towards the end of 2015.

Williamson's rating points are the highest by any New Zealander in Test cricket with Richard Hadlee the only other player from his country to cross the 900-point mark with a best of 909 points in bowling.

Openers Tom Latham and Jeet Raval have also made good progress after their centuries in Hamilton. Latham's score of 161 has lifted him one place to a career-best 11th position and just three points shy of South Africa's Faf du Plessis, who is in 10th place with 702 points. Raval's maiden century, after seven fifties, has helped him gain five slots and reach 33rd position.

Among their bowlers, the pair of Trent Boult (down two places to eighth) and Tim Southee (ninth) remain in the top 10 while Neil Wagner is also moving in the right direction, gaining three places and reaching 11th position after finishing with seven wickets in the match, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.&nbsp;

Ravindra Jadeja too maintained his fifth position in bowling with 794 points while the out-of-favour Ravichandran Ashwin was 10th with 763 points.

ICC Test rankings: Virat Kohli still on top but Kane Williamson narrows gap

New Zealand's first innings record 715 for six, including a double century from skipper Kane Williamson, put them in total control of the first Test against Bangladesh after three days on Saturday.

The hosts breached the 700 barrier for the first time on their way to building a 481 run lead and were six wickets away from the win by stumps.

Bangladesh were 174 for four in the second innings, still 307 behind and with their last two recognised batsmen at the crease.

"Obviously that was historic," batting coach Craig McMillan said after play finished for the day.

"The contributions throughout the innings make it a very special one," he added, describing Williamson's unbeaten 200 as "sublime".

Williamson declared the innings when he reached the 200 milestone for the second time in his career.

On an explosive day of batting, with a total of 438 runs scored, Tamim Iqbal gave Bangladesh a flying start to their reply as they raced to 88 without loss.&nbsp;

But once Neil Wagner's relentless barrage of bouncers captured the wicket of Shadman Iqbal for 37, the visitors soon stood at 126 for four.

Mominul Haque and Mohammad Mithun barely registered and Tamim was caught behind for 76.

The opener ducked under a Tim Southee bouncer but left his bat held high with the ball ricocheting off the periscope and into the gloves of BJ Watling.

Soumya Sarkar on 39 with Mahmudullah on 15 held the innings together for 13 overs through to stumps.

New Zealand skipper Williamson resumed the day on 93 and calmly worked his way to his 20th century -- the most ever by a New Zealander -- and passed 6,000 Test runs faster and with a better average than any of his countrymen.

At the other end, Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme pounded the bowling as New Zealand piled on 264 runs from 45 overs and went 25 runs past their previous record of 690 against Pakistan in 2014.

Mehidy Hasan bagged two wickets but bore the brunt of the assault, finishing with his side's most expensive Test figures ever of two for 246 from 49 overs.&nbsp;

Pre-lunch, Williamson was content to take a backseat as nightwatchman Wagner blazed away for 47 runs -- 42 from boundaries -- in their 60-run stand.

It was Ebadat Hossain, on debut, who made the breakthrough with his first Test wicket to deny Wagner his maiden fifty when he shaved the edge of the bat, with wicketkeeper Liton Das completing the dismissal.&nbsp;

Earlier, Krunal Pandya struck thrice that helped India to restrict the hosts at a competitive total.&nbsp;

Krunal's 3/28 in 4 overs earned him player of the match award. He dismissed Colin Munro (12) and skipper Kane Williamson (20) to peg the Black Caps back.&nbsp;

In between, Krunal also got the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/daryl-mitchell-out-or-not-out-controversial-lbw-raises-new-debate-on-drs-196035">controversial wicket of Daryl Mitchell</a> (1), who fell prey to an umpiring howler, when 'Hotspot' showed a clear inside edge onto the pads.&nbsp;

However, Colin de Grandhomme then counter-attacked, scoring a blistering 50 off 28 balls, adding 77 runs with Ross Taylor (42 off 36 balls) for the fifth wicket.&nbsp;

Once De Grandhomme was sent back to the dug-out by Hardik Pandya (1/36 in 4 overs) and Taylor was run-out, New Zealand's chances of a big total went up in smoke.&nbsp;

It was a much-improved performance by the Indian bowlers with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/29 in 4 overs) removing Tim Seifert (12) in the very third over with a fuller delivery, inducing an inside edge to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps.&nbsp;

At 50 for 4, it was De Grandhomme, who took charge as he attacked Yuzvendra Chahal (0/37 in 4 overs), hitting him for a couple of sixes.&nbsp;

When he was just about threatening to take the game away, De Grandhomme smacked one straight to covers in skipper Rohit's hands.&nbsp;

India bowled 35 dot balls, which could well be decisive in the final context of the match.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma, Krunal Pandya help India beat New Zealand to level series

The second Twenty20 International match between India and New Zealand became controversial when batsman Daryl Mitchell fell to a debatable LBW call.&nbsp;

An inside edge, that was apparent even without the Hotspot technology, was given LBW out by the third umpire.&nbsp;

Mitchell, who made his debut in the first T20I in Wellington, was given out LBW to Krunal Pandya in the seventh over of New Zealand's innings by the on-field umpires and opted for a review on the insistence of his skipper Kane Williamson, who was at the non-striker's end.&nbsp;

Mitchell and Williamson were sure that there was an inside edge but there wasn't any spike on snicko&nbsp;but the TV replays clearly showed there was an inside edge.&nbsp;

Also, a huge spot on the Hotspot could also be detected as the ball passed the bat but eventually he was still given out by third umpire Shaun Haig.&nbsp;

The issue also triggered a debate on the spirit of the game because the only way Mitchell could have survived was if Rohit had called him back after replays on the big screen made it clear that there was an inside edge before the ball hit the batsman's pads.&nbsp;

But the Kiwis, bestowed the spirit of the game award by the ICC quite often, had to accept the controversial call.&nbsp;

Daryl Mitchell out or not out? Controversial LBW raises new debate on DRS

India skipper Rohit Sharma Wednesday said that a line-up with eight specialist batsmen should have chased down the 220-run target set by New Zealand, however steep it might have looked for a T20 match.&nbsp;

<a href="http://www.wionews.com/sports/1st-t20i-india-all-out-for-139-new-zealand-win-by-80-runs-195572">India folded for 139 in 19.2 overs</a> collapsing to their worst-ever defeat by 80 runs in the first T20 international.

"It was a tough game. We were outplayed in all three departments. We didn't start well and we knew that 200 wasn't going to be an easy chase," Rohit said after the match.

"We have chased such (big) targets in the past and that is why we played with eight batsmen. But we didn't have (even) small partnerships and that made it tougher. New Zealand though played well, they had partnerships. We need to go to Auckland, have a look at the conditions and take it from there," he added.

Outplayed 1-4 by India in the five-match ODI series, Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson was happy to finally see his team produce a "complete performance" in the first T20I.

"Fantastic performance all around, everyone rose and it was one of those complete performances that you search for. The top-order were superb and we built partnerships that helped us," Williamson said.

"But it has finished now, we move on in a day's time and we have another game. Hope we can keep the momentum through the series having set the tone."

Opening duo of Tim Seifert (84) and Colin Munro (34) shared a 86-run opening partnership to lay the foundation for New Zealand's total before the bowlers returned to complete the job.

"Seifert and Munro were outstanding. It really was a good experience for the boys. Some of the short contributions were of great importance. Daryll bowled really well and played a good cameo down the order. We had the runs on the board, but the bowling and fielding too was of high standard," Williamson said.

Seifert, who was adjudged the 'Man of the Match' for his 43-ball 84, said he was happy to live up to the expectations after his selection in the team.

"It was a great way to start the series and the boys are really happy. It feels great to go up the order. I had a look at the first two overs and then took it from there and put pressure on the bowlers," he said.&nbsp;

"I have been selected for a reason and it feels nice to have backed my ability," he said when asked about his big-hitting prowess.&nbsp;

India captain Rohit Sharma blames batsmen for 1st T20I loss to New Zealand

Indian bowlers rattled New Zealand batsmen to dominate the fifth and final ODI on Sunday.

Kedar Jadhav bowled a low delivery which made skipper Kane Williamson hit a big shot but ended being caught by Shikhar Dhawan before the boundary line. &nbsp;

Pacer Mohammed Shami provided India with the breakthrough in the fourth over to dismiss opener Henry Nicholls as the hosts chase a target of 253 runs. After few overs, Shami struck again to clean bowled Colin Munro for 24 runs.&nbsp;

Apart from Shami, Hardik Pandya, who performed well with the bat for India, bowled a beautiful delivery to send Ross Taylor back to the pavilion early.&nbsp;

Earlier, Ambati Rayadu's patient 90 and Hardik Pandya's 45-run cameo powered India to a decent 252 total against New Zealand in the fifth and final ODI &nbsp;at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington on Saturday.

Pandya faced just 22 balls to hit 45 runs which included two boundaries and five sixes. He was caught out while trying to hit a six.&nbsp;

Earlier, Rayudu and Vijay Shankar revived Indian innings after the visitors lost four wickets for just 18 runs in the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand on Saturday. The partnership, however, ended after Shankar was run-out for 45.&nbsp;

Relying on skipper MS Dhoni, who returned to the squad after missing two ODIs due to injury, was clean bowled. He faced a total of six balls and made just one run.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, India's Test sensation Shubman Gill once again failed to score big for his side and got caught off Matt Henry after making just seven runs.

While Matt Henry accounted for Rohit and Gill, Trent Boult dismissed Dhawan and Dhoni. &nbsp;

Earlier, Martin Guptill was ruled out with a back injury and has been replaced by Colin Munro, who was dropped for the fourth ODI, which New Zealand won, after a string of failures.&nbsp;

India lead the five-match ODI series 3-1. The inclusion of Munro is the only change in the New Zealand side with swing bowler Tim Southee again unwanted.&nbsp;

India have MS Dhoni back behind the stumps after the master finisher missed the previous two matches because of a hamstring twinge, and they have also brought back quick bowler Mohammed Shami.

"The average score here is around 230-240, but if you bat well you can get 300," Rohit Sharma said.&nbsp;

Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck twice to dismiss two New Zealand players as the host chase 92 runs on Thursday.&nbsp;

Bhuvneshwar first dismissed Martin Guptill for 14 and later picked up the wicket of Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson for 11.

India were all out for 92 in the fourth ODI at Seddon Park, Hamilton. The Lower batting order played a better game than the top players as they saved India's pride by taking them past their lowest ever total of 54 runs at Sharjah in 2000.&nbsp;

Yuzvendra Chahal remained unbeaten for 18 and is the highest individual runs scored today followed by Hardik Pandya's 16.&nbsp;

However, he was dismissed by Trent Boult. Boult has clinched five wickets in his 10 overs and gave away just 21 runs. He also bowled four maiden overs.&nbsp;

Earlier, New Zealand dismissed India's top six players in quick succession to dominate the fourth ODI.

At a point, with just 12 overs into the game, India has already lost six wickets and have made just 35 runs.&nbsp;

Put into bat, 'Men In Blue' lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for just 13 runs. Minutes later, stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma also lost his wicket for seven runs.&nbsp;

Both the openers were dismissed by Trent Boult, taking India's score to 23 for the loss of two wickets after eight overs.

But the damage did not stop there as Colin de Grandhomme struck twice to put his side in a commanding position. He first dismissed Rayudu and took Karthik's wickets in two successive deliveries.&nbsp;

Boult struck again to dismiss Shubman Gill, then young sensation who proved his cricketing prowess against Australia in Tests. It is his ODI debut game.&nbsp;

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and invited India to bat first in the fourth ODI on Thursday.

After six overs, India's score stands at 21 for loss of one wicket.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma is leading the team in absence of Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the last two ODIs.

Young Shubman Gill will make his debut for India, while left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed has replaced Mohammed Shami.&nbsp;

MS Dhoni is still not fit and will miss this ODI also. &nbsp;India are 3-0 up in the five-match series.

IND vs NZ, 4th ODI: Bhuvneshwar dismisses two in New Zealand's 92-run chase

New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in the third One-Day International (ODI) against India at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval on Monday.&nbsp;

After winning the toss, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson said his team would hopefully benefit (from the pitch) in the first hour.&nbsp;

"We do know that If we play our best cricket, we can beat anybody. It's important we execute our plans as best as we can," he said.&nbsp;

There was just one change in New Zealand's playing XI with Mitchell Santner coming in for Colin de Grandhomme.&nbsp;

Williamson added that spin had been effective through the series and that the Bay Oval pitch will help spinners.&nbsp;

While Indian captain Virat Kohli, who look to seal the five-match series said, "This pitch will get slower and slower but under the lights, we felt the ball came on better, we won't mind bowling first."

India will enter the stadium with two changes in the playing XI, MS Dhoni has a sore hamstring so he has been replaced by Dinesh Karthik.&nbsp;

India have thrust recalled all-rounder Hardik Pandya as he replaced Vijay Shankar.&nbsp;

Pandya was sent home when from Australia earlier this month following allegedly sexist remarks made on a television chat show.&nbsp;

But he was rushed to New Zealand to rejoin the side after the suspension was lifted last Thursday.

"He brings great balance to the team. He can give you 5-6 overs and also play the big shots as well. It's brilliant, especially if you look at our away performances," said Virat on Pandya's addition.&nbsp;

IND vs NZ, 3rd ODI: Hardik Pandya back in playing XI, Kiwis choose to bat first

India's right-arm leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham in quick succession to put India in a &nbsp;dominating position in the first ODI at McLean Park, Napier.

Kedar Jadhav too managed to take a wicket, thanks to a brilliant catch by Kuldeep Yadav.&nbsp; After 24 overs, Kiwis score stands at 107 for the loss of five wickets.&nbsp;

Opting to bat, the host lost Martin Guptill and Colin Munro for five and eight runs respectively. Both the players suffered the same fate and were clean bowled by Shami. Meanwhile,&nbsp;skipper Kane Williamson is going strong but requires a partner at the other end to put up a decent target for India. &nbsp;

Speaking after winning the toss, Williamson said, "Looks a good surface here and we want to put a score on the board. We know India are a good chasing side but we want to put runs on the board and I'm sure the surface will play the same throughout. Just the one spinner - Mitch Santner is back and also Doug Bracewell is in. It's about balancing the side, seam-bowling all-rounder is needed and that's what Bracewell comes in. I think it will be a fair pitch regardless of whether you're bowling seam, spin or batting. We were good in the SL series but want to keep improving. Looking for a good series to be played in the right spirit."

India, on the other hand, recently ended the Australia tour by creating several historic records.&nbsp;

Talking about their strategy for today, skipper Kohli said, "the bowlers have played a major part in us being a top team than the batsmen really. It's a batsmen's game and the crowd come in to see fours and sixes. I feel that our side is very balanced at the moment with good depth in batting and bowling. Pretty relaxed with where we stand as a team."&nbsp;

"It's going to be a competitive series. New Zealand are a good side and they play with the right spirit. They are a side that everyone must look upto in terms of carrying yourself on the field. Mutual respect is always there between us. Our motivation to win games remain the same irrespective of opposition. We're not going to have any incidents," Kohli concluded.

1st ODI: Chahal removes Taylor, Latham in quick succession; NZ are 107/5 after 24 overs

India defeated New Zealand by eight wickets in the first ODI, which was reduced to 49 overs because of sun, to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Anchored by Shikhar Dhawan's patient half-century, India chased down the target of 156 runs set by the host in just 34.5 overs at the McLean Park, Napier on Wednesday.

He remained unbeaten at 75 along with Ambati Rayadu who contributed 13 runs. Skipper Virat Kohli also made 45 runs but lost his wicket five runs short to his half-century to Lockie Ferguson. His inning included three boundaries.

Earlier, Indian openers gave India the required start before Rohit Sharma lost his wicket, soon after the dinner break. &nbsp;He was dismissed off Doug Bracewell after making just 11 runs.

In bowling, India's left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav clinched four wickets to restrict New Zealand to a paltry 157. The host innings ended in just 38 overs with skipper Kane Williamson scoring the highest runs.

Williamson slammed a brilliant half-century to put up a decent fight but failed to find any partner at the other end as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. He lost his wicket at 64 while trying to hit a big shot.&nbsp;

At a point, right-arm leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal had dismissed Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham in quick succession to put India in a &nbsp;dominating position. Kedar Jadhav too managed to take a wicket, thanks to a brilliant catch by Kuldeep Yadav.&nbsp;

Pacer Mohammed Shami struck twice to dismiss New Zealand's openers early. Later, he took one more wicket to take his count to three.&nbsp;

Dhawan's unbeaten 75 helps India beat New Zealand by 8 wickets in 1st ODI

India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday stressed on the importance of all-rounder Hardik Pandya's presence in the ODI side in order to get the ideal bowling combination for the World Cup.

Pandya has been suspended pending inquiry after his sexist comments on a TV chat show and already the Indian team have had issues with their third specialist pacer ahead of the five-match ODI against New Zealand starting Wednesday.

Rookies Khaleel Ahmed and Mohammed Siraj both got a fair amount of stick against Australia in the first two ODIs before Hardik's replacement Vijay Shankar bowled a steady spell of six overs in the series decider in Melbourne.

When asked if there can be an ideal bowling combination, the skipper said: "Depends on the all-rounder to be honest. If you see the strongest sides in the world, they have two all-rounders at the least, some sides have three, so that gives you a lot of bowling options."

For Kohli, a third fast bowler is an option only when a specialist all-rounder is unavailable.

"Only if someone like a Vijay Shankar or a Hardik doesn't play, then (only) three fast bowlers makes sense. Because if an all-rounder can chip in with a few overs of seam up, then you don't necessarily need a guy bowling 140kmph as the third bowler along with the two fast bowlers," Kohli said ahead of the first ODI at McLean Park.

Kohli, in a very subtle yet strong manner, put across his point about Hardik's absence from the side.

"So whether it's me backing three bowlers or during Asia Cup, every time it happened when Hardik wasn't available. We have had to play three fast bowlers. So every time, the all-rounder is there, you are not thinking about a third fast bowler unless you are playing in conditions which are totally against spin bowling," the skipper said.

While winning the series is important, the Indian captain made it clear that he would like to remain flexible about team combination keeping the World Cup in mind.

"Look winning is always going to be a very important factor but the main thing is not to be desperate at this stage. There needs to be a good atmosphere in the change room, there needs to be calmness and collective effort towards just refining ourselves as a team approaching the World Cup."

Kohli indicated that a few players could be tried here and there, raising hopes of young Shubman Gill getting an opportunity during the series.

"Also to try a few players here and there and see how they react to different situations or different positions in the team. We are open to doing that as well.&nbsp;

"You don't want to be too rigid because you want to be flexible in your mind and in your preparation to be able to competitive during a big tournament like the World Cup," the skipper explained.

"I think we need a good balance of both even if we back a few players to play at some stage, the idea is still to win the games and not just think of it as an experiment," he set priorities right.

New Zealand grounds presents a different challenge for bowlers with the boundaries on the shorter side.

"You have to aware of side boundaries being really short in most of the grounds, so targeting the right areas of the ground becomes very important but I think bowlers require more composure here in terms of which are the shots that batsmen want to play, so you have the best chance of getting them out or restricting boundaries," the skipper observed.

The current batting group is much more experienced compared to the one in 2014, said the skipper.

"Well we have seen a lot of things that happened from the last series (2014) that we played here, like what were patterns and how the guys were trying to get us out last time, we were probably not an experienced a side back then in terms of batting group," he stated.

"The key is not to panic too much in the field, when you see 300 being posted regularly as you have to back yourself as batting group to get those runs or set a big target when batting first, which I believe when we played last time, we didn't have the composure," he reasoned.&nbsp;

IND vs NZ: Hardik Pandya's absence forces us into playing three seamers, says Virat Kohli

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson provided a batting masterclass against Sri Lanka in Wellington on Sunday to keep up his chase of Virat Kohli to become the world's top Test batsman, just as the Indian skipper was showing his class in Perth.

Williamson scored 91 as he and Tom Latham combined for 162 runs to drive New Zealand to 311 for two at stumps on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Basin Reserve.

Latham was unbeaten on 121 at the close of play, having notched his seventh century after playing the anchor role for the hosts and helping them to a 29-run first innings lead with eight wickets remaining.

Ross Taylor was 50 not out, but the day's play was dominated by Williamson, who had risen to a career-best Test ranking of number two in the world - behind Kohli - after scoring 386 runs at an average of over 77 in the UAE against Pakistan.

Coincidentally both he and his Indian counterpart were batting at the same time more than 5,200 kilometres apart.

Kohli scored 123 in India's first innings in the second Test against Australia but was far more circumspect than the 28-year-old New Zealander.

Williamson, who replaced Jeet Raval after the opener was dismissed for 43 on the final ball before lunch, hit the first three deliveries he faced to the fence.

He then accumulated runs at will and combined with Latham for 116 runs in 25 overs during the middle session.

Shortly after Kohli brought up his 25th Test century at the Perth Stadium, Williamson looked well set to score his 20th at almost a run a ball.

The right-handed batsman, however, succumbed to what was the only mistake of his 93-ball innings when he swept part-time offspinner Dhananjaya de Silva straight to Kasun Rajitha at backward square less than an hour into the final session.

Sri Lanka's first innings lasted just three overs in the first session when Tim Southee grabbed his sixth wicket after a brilliant diving catch by Colin de Grandhomme at leg slip to dismiss Lahiru Kumara for a duck.

The visitors were bowled out for 282 with Niroshan Dickwella left stranded on 80, while Southee finished with 6-68.

Interestingly, Chennai and Hyderabad have locked horns three times previously in this season and all the games were won by Dhoni & corp.

IPL 2018 Final: 'Kings' Chennai to clash once again with 'Risers' Hyderabad

The biggest cricket carnival, Indian Premier League has reached the last phase and we have two finalists Hyderabad and Chennai.

The cricket fraternity is waiting for the ultimate winner of&nbspthe eleventh edition of IPL which will be decided after today's intriguing encounter between the two finalists at Wankhede.

According to several online surveys that are being conducted on social media, M.S Dhoni-led Chennai team has been voted as the strong favourites but they certainly don't deserve the title.

The fans survey highlighted Dhoni as the most popular player out of the top 12 players with 27.3 per cent votes followed by Virat Kohli with 22 per cent and Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson with 20.11 per cent fan votes.&nbsp

If the favourites teams are judged on the basis of favourite players than Virat Kohli-led Bangalore must win the competition because the Bangalore team had the most popular playing XI of the season, in the presence of Virat himself and South African batsman AB de Villiers.

We all know that the frenzy for MS Dhoni is massive, it doesn't matter whether he is playing for Chennai or Pune, the fan following will be same. It is an honour and MSD has earned it for himself and he truly deserves it.

On the other hand, Hyderabad received a major blow before the start of IPL in the form of David Warner's ouster from the IPL.

Australian cricketer David Warner was supposed to lead the "Orange Army" and also he was the opener. In his absence, Hyderabad's batting unit suffered a lot but still the team raised above it and emerged as one of the top contenders for the title.

After David Warner's exit, Kane Williamson got the responsibility to lead the team and he proved his mettle with stunning leadership skills and managed to reach the finals despite many adversities.

Under his guidance, many players come into view and the best example of that is Siddharth Kaul.

Kaul has taken 21 wickets so far in the tournament with 8.00 economy rate.

Although, Rashid Khan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have supported the team,&nbspbut never felt the pressure of sole responsibility.

The bowling unit has never been dependent on experienced ones, in fact, all the bowlers, from spinners to seamers and from pacers to death over specialists, everybody has taken wickets at crucial moments.

Unlike Chennai, which is also branded as a bunch of old and experienced players, Hyderabad have given chance to young talents.

In my opinion, it is easy to play and win with experienced players but it takes actual intent to motivate young champs and give them chance to play their own game and shine brighter than stars.

Opinion: IPL 2018 - Why Hyderabad will overshadow Dhoni's experienced side

Two-time champions Kolkata will host Kane Williamson-led Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens stadium on Friday, May 25 to book a berth in the Indian Premier League 2018 finals.

The winner of tonight's match will meet MS Dhoni-led Chennai in the IPL's finale on May 27 as team Chennai has already through to the finals after defeating Hyderabad in the Qualifier 1.

It's very ironic when the table toppers at the end of league matches, struggle&nbsp;to reach the finals, now call it carelessness or the lack of performance from their middle-order, Hyderabad have lost four straight games, something that will be a cause of concern for Williamson's side in tonight's game.

Although, Hyderabad have the best bowling unit in the presence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma and Rashid Khan. The bowling side will try to take benefits from the Eden Gardens track but it is not easy to face Dinesh Karthik's side&nbsp;as the batsmen coming at the 6th and 7th position have potential to score runs.

In the presence of crazy fans at the Eden Gardens, Dinesh Karthik&nbsp;side definitely has an upper hand against Hyderabad.

In the first Qualifier, when Hyderabad had their match in the pocket with Chennai struggling at 62-6 while chasing 140 runs but the bowling strategy backfired in the death overs when Carlos Brathwaite leaked too many runs.

Also, Hyderabad's problem has been their batting which is heavily reliant on skipper Kane Williamson, the current 'Orange Cap' holder with 685 runs at 57.05 average.

In order to resolve it, Shikhar Dhawan will have to rise to the occasion but it is the middle order that has created problems, Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan will have to score in order to help the bowling unit to bowl without pressure.

On the other hand, Dinesh Karthik who will look to go unchanged unless there's an injury in the lineup.&nbsp;

Their biggest strength has been the team's ability to stand up and perform in case someone fails. That we have seen in the Eliminator match when the top batting order was out bowled then middle batting order scored to reach the target.

The clash is going to be very interesting as the result will give another finalist of the tournament.

IPL 2018, 2nd Qualifier: Karthik-led Kolkata have advantage at Eden against Hyderabad

There are more bad moments than good in a cricket match but what differentiates the two is how well and soon you make a comeback.

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) enters its last week, the first qualifier will be played between the two best teams of the seasons, Hyderabad and Chennai. &nbsp;
Both are the top two teams on points table following the conclusion of the league stage and it grants them two shots to make it to the final.

The winner today will stay in Mumbai while the loser goes to Kolkata, with the hope of making it back to Wankhede.

The intriguing fact of the game today are the skippers - Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Kane Williamson. The qualifier 1 is not just limited to these two names, it is more than that.

It is ‘best defenders vs best chasers’. &nbsp;

However, the chasers have been inconsistent in comparison to the defenders, and this is exactly what makes them a week team today.&nbsp; And the worst part, Hyderabad know it.

Dhoni-led Chennai which returned to the fray after serving out a two-year suspension, started its campaign by registering one-wicket win against defending champions Mumbai.

However, the credit goes to a single player - Dwayne Bravo. His 30-ball 68 was the only reason why the 'Yellow Brigade' won. &nbsp;

With openers falling cheaply the middle and lower order failed to provide any momentum and gave away their wickets. And this problem still exists when they enter the qualifiers today.

Whenever Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu have fallen cheaply, Chennai’s middle-order hasn’t shown the ability to withstand the pressure and in the end has left too much for Dhoni to do on his own.

Though Suresh Raina has done well in patches, his strike rate hasn’t been great.&nbsp; Sam Billings, too, barring a match-winning knock against Kolkata, hasn’t had much of an impact.

Another problem which adds to Dhoni's woes is absence of a death-over specialist.

Dhoni is worried with his bowlers leaking too many runs in the last few overs. Lack of options has seen Dhoni handing over the ball to different bowlers. But as the tournament progressed Bravo came out to be better while others completely struggled.

Chennai’s worry list also includes senior players - Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja. Though both have done well in containing the opposition but haven’t impressed with the wickets.

In 14 games played, Jadeja clinched only 9 wickets and made just 86 runs, while Singh has 7 wickets to his name in 12 games and only 27 runs contribution. The best part about Chennai is they have never been dependent on a single batsman or bowler, but the inconsistency factor will be major trouble for the team. &nbsp;

But, no matter what happens today, the loser gets another opportunity in qualifier-2 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on May 25.

Opinion: Why MS Dhoni-led Chennai will lose against Hyderabad in IPL Qualifier 1

The first Qualifiers of&nbsp;IPL 2018 will be played on Tuesday between the two best teams, Chennai and Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

In previous meetings of the ongoing edition, MS Dhoni-led Chennai defeated the Kane Williamson's side.

Both the teams have scored 18 points, but Hyderabad stand&nbsp;atop&nbsp;league's table with a better Net Run Rate (NRR) than Chennai.

So, let us take a look at the players expected to perform in today's big clash.

1. Kane Williamson -&nbsp;The backbone of Hyderabad team and one of the most successful skippers in the ongoing league,&nbsp;Williamson&nbsp;has&nbsp;proved his calibre&nbsp;in the leadership skills. With his team being the table-toppers, he definitely fulfilled his duties as a captain. In 14 matches, he&nbsp;scored total 661 runs&nbsp;including eight half-centuries. Today, it is expected that he will cross Rishabh Pant in the race of 'Orange Cap' and also will outplay Chennai to book a finale berth.&nbsp;

2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar -&nbsp;Although, Hyderabad have the best bowling unit in the IPL 2018 and Bhuvi is one of the best options for 'Orange Army' to damage Chennai's batting line-up. In such crucial&nbsp;matches, experience&nbsp;matters a lot and&nbsp;Bhuvneshwar has such potential. So far in nine matches, he has taken eight wickets with an economy of 8.14. He is definitely a player to watch out for in tonight's clash.

3. Lungi Ngidi - South African star pacer has impressed everyone with his economical bowling. His brilliant haul of 4 wickets&nbsp;including prized wickets of KL Rahul and Chris Gayle against&nbsp;Punjab was a reason&nbsp;Punjab's ouster from the tournament. Overall, he has played five matches and took nine wickets. He is definitely a player to watch out for in today's game.

4. Ambati Rayudu -&nbsp;He is an outstanding batsman and has been&nbsp;a consistent run scorer for Chennai in IPL 2018. His presence&nbsp;in today's&nbsp;crucial match will&nbsp;be an&nbsp;advantage for Chennai. He scored 586 runs in 14 games so far. His experience and ability to deplete any bowling attack makes him a player to watch out for in today's game.&nbsp;

5. Shane Watson - Chennai's opener&nbsp;Watson has scored 438 runs in his 13 games so far. He has smashed a century this season and has the potential to give a required start to the team. Watson has also made an important contribution with the bowl by taking important wickets in different occasions. Although he scored just 14 runs off 23 balls in the&nbsp;match against Delhi, still it is expected that he will&nbsp;survive the&nbsp;massive bowling attack&nbsp;of&nbsp;Hyderabad.

As the winner of today's match will directly enter finals, the match promises to be quite a contest.&nbsp;

He has been in red-hot form to rise to the number two slot in the leading run-getters' list with 661 runs.

Kane along with opener Shikhar Dhawan, who took some time to get going, have shown consistency with the bat. The left-handed batsman has made 437 runs which includes four half-centuries.

Meanwhile, their bowling attack is in contrast to their batting ways.

They have Sidharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma to rely on. Overseas spinners Rashid Khan and Shakib Al Hasan add depth to their line.

The advantage they have over Chennai is their death-overs specialist Bhuvneshwar Kumar. MS Dhoni is yet to find one for his team.

Chennai, on the other hand, have a plus point that they are not dependent on selected players, although Ambati Rayudu has been their standout performer with 586 runs.

Shane Watson, 438 runs, too has been in top form along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The form of key batsman Suresh Raina, who anchored the innings splendidly against Punjab with an unbeaten 61, is another encouraging sign.

The outstanding spell of South African Lungi Ngidi, who grabbed 4 for 10 to take the man of the match award last night, could not have come at a more opportune time for the Super Kings.

With Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo doing their bit on the pace bowling front, Chennai will be banking on spin twins Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja to deliver in the middle overs.

Meanwhile, a win here will take Chennai to their seventh IPL final, since its inception, while the loser the loser will be playing Qualifier 2 in Kolkata on May 25.

Barring the last few games, the bowlers’ capability to defend paltry totals have been the talking point of the season. × They have Sidharth Kaul and Sandeep Sharma to rely on.

Dhawan, Williamson shine as Hyderabad set 180-run target for Chennai

This will be the first time when Hyderabad and Bangalore will come face to face at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018.

While Hyderabad is leading the table with 14 points, Bangalore is struggling to even make it for the play-off and hence are at the third place from the bottom with just six points.

Let us take a look at the players expected to perform in today's big clash:

1. Rashid Khan - In his last match against Delhi, Rashid took two crucial wickets, which made him the 'Man of the Match'. He is also two wickets away from wearing the 'Purple Cap'. The Afghanistan tweaker is capable of breaking any standing partnership, making him the player to watch out for today. &nbsp;

2. Umesh Yadav - Considering his previous game against Chennai, Yadav dismissed Shane Watson and Suresh Raina to put Bangalore over the 'Yellow Brigade'. But eventually, they lost the match. He has been in good form from last few games and is expected to do the same and knock out Hyderabad batsmen. And, not to forget that one more wicket today and he will get the 'Purple Cap'.&nbsp;

3. Alex Hales - Hyderabad picked Hales as their new replacement for David Warner for this season of IPL. He has played two matches so far scoring 90 runs. In his previous game against Delhi, he scored 31-ball-45 which included three fours and three sixes. Being picked up at his base price, the opener has a lot more to offer to his franchise.

4. Parthiv Patel - Patel got his first chance in IPL 2018 in the previous game against Chennai and he smashed a brilliant half-century to prove his worth and calibre. His inning was a signal to Bangalore and warning to other franchises that he is capable of playing many such knocks. The Bangalore opener and wicket-keeper is definitely a player to watch out for today.

5. Kane Williamson - The backbone of Hyderabad is one of the most successful skippers in the ongoing league so far. With his team being the table-toppers, he definitely fulfilled his duties as a captain. When required he has stood up for his team as a batsman too. In nine matches he has scored 354 runs which include four half-centuries. Even in his previous game, Hyderabad skipper remained unbeaten and ensured victory for his side. Also, he stands at number seven in the race for the 'Orange Cap'.&nbsp;

Being at top of the table, it won't be unfair at all to say that Hyderabad has an upper hand in today's game. While Bangalore have to play a different game altogether to beat the current number one team.&nbsp;
