Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance on Saturday (Oct 5) addressed the Trump campaign's stance on abortion. Just days after former first lady Melania Trump voiced her support for a woman's right to abortion, Vance defended the campaign's conservative position on the issue. A 'messy democracy' Emphasising state-level autonomy over abortion laws, Vance said, "I don't think our campaign messaging has been inconsistent at all." Talking to reporters, he said that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's view allows states to shape their own abortion regulations. What did Melania Trump say on abortion? The comments come days after Melania Trump, the former first lady and Donald Trump's wife, made remarks that seemed to contrast her husband's more moderate tone. In a video released on Thursday (Oct 3), Melania expressed firm support for a woman's right to "individual freedom," and said there was "no room for compromise". This stance diverged from Trump's previous statements and the Republican Party's platform. Vance was asked about the former first lady's comments and offered a measured response. "I adore the First Lady," he said, adding that she's entitled to her opinions.
Bruce Springsteen knows who he is going to vote for. In a video shared by the singer, Bruce endorsed Kamala Harris for president.

In a video shot inside a diner, Bruce Springsteen is seen expressing his political views. He said, “Perhaps not since the Civil War has this great country felt as politically, spiritually and emotionally divided as it does than at this moment. It doesn’t have to be this way.”

Bruce Springsteen endorses Kamala Harris

He then added that Kamala’s competition, Donald Trump is the “most dangerous candidate for president”. He said, “Donald Trump is the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime. His disdain for the sanctity of our Constitution, the sanctity of democracy, the sanctity of the rule of law and the sanctity of the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the office of president ever again. He doesn’t understand the meaning of this country, its history, or what it means to be deeply American.”

Bruce opened up on his vote for Kamala and said that both Kamala and Tim Walz are “committed to a vision of this country that respects and includes everyone, regardless of class, religion, race, your political point of view or sexual identity, and they want to grow our economy in a way that benefits all, not just a few like me, on top. That’s the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years.”

In the previous elections, Bruce had been vocal about his support for Barack Obama and Joe Biden in their respective elections.

Over 129,000 voters in Georgia have registered since President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 election. This could be promising news for the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

Why is Georgia a crucial battleground for the 2024 election?

Georgia has the potential to play an important role in determining the outcome of the 2024 race. Since Harris officially entered the race on July 21, after Biden stepped down, polls have shown Georgia becoming increasingly competitive.

How many voters registered between July and September?

Between July 21 and September 8, voter registration surged in Georgia, with a Newsweek report indicating that over 120,000 new voters were added. Of these, around 51,000 registered as Democrats, while 13,000 signed up as Republicans, and around 64,000 identified as unaffiliated voters.

One key factor in this surge is the increase in registrations among younger people and people of colour, which could give Harris an advantage in the state. In 2020, Biden narrowly won Georgia, and the current voter dynamics could help Harris replicate or even improve on that result.

What is the demographic breakdown of new Georgia voters?

As per the Newsweek report, approximately 56 per cent of these new voters are aged 34 or under, with 20 per cent of them being 18-year-olds. Additionally, over half of the new registrants (about 53 per cent) are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Harris has long been supported by Black voters, and as the first Black and South Asian vice president, she has huge support from this demographic. Also, polls indicate she is doing better with Latino voters than Trump.

Young voters seem to be a particular strength for Harris. A recent survey by the Harvard Institute of Politics found that she leads Trump by a 31-point margin among likely voters under 30.

US vice presidential contenders JD Vance and Tim Walz clashed on Tuesday (Oct 1) in the first and potentially the last televised debate before the November elections. The two candidates clashed over a variety of issues, including abortion and immigration, even as the discussions repeatedly circled back to Vance's running mate Donald Trump. How many times was Trump mentioned? According to AFP, Trump's name overshadowed many of the exchanges, coming up over 80 times- twice as many times as Walz's running mate Kamala Harris. However, the debate between the Republican candidate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, and his Democratic counterpart, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, took a deeper dive into policy compared to the September debate between Trump and Kamala Harris. "By standing with Donald Trump and not working together to find a solution, (immigration) becomes a talking point…And when it becomes a talking point like this, we dehumanise and villainise other human beings." He said that Harris represents "steady leadership while Trump was "fickle". US presidential election: Kamala Harris' campaign raises $55 million over two weekend events

The death toll from powerful storm Helene jumped to at least 93 on Sunday, with one county in North Carolina alone reporting 30 deaths, authorities said, as rescuers battled to reach people in need across the southeastern United States.

The storm response took on a political tinge after President Joe Biden and the two candidates vying to replace him, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, announced plans to soon visit hard-hit areas, some of them in key battleground states in the November election.

High winds and torrential rain pummeled towns and cities across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Homes were destroyed, roads flooded out and power cut off to millions.

"We're hearing (of) significant infrastructure damage to water systems, communication, roads, critical transportation routes, as well as several homes that have been just destroyed by this," the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Deanne Criswell, said Sunday.

At least 93 people were killed in the extreme weather -- 37 in North Carolina, 25 in South Carolina, 17 in Georgia, 11 in Florida, two in Tennessee and one in Virginia, according to tallies from local authorities compiled by AFP. That total was expected to rise.

"We have another devastating update. We now have 30 confirmed losses due to the storm," Quentin Miller, the sheriff in North Carolina's Buncombe County, which includes the tourist city of Asheville, told a briefing.

Flood warnings remained in effect in parts of western North Carolina, amid fears of potential dam failures.

Conditions were expected to improve in the affected areas by around Tuesday, National Weather Service director Ken Graham said.

Nearly 2.2 million households remained without power on Sunday, according to tracker poweroutage.us.

US Department of Energy official Matt Targuagno said that crews were working hard to restore electricity but warned it would be "a complex, multi-day response."

Thousands of people continued to seek assistance in shelters run by the American Red Cross, organization official Jennifer Pipa said.

North Carolina saw some of the worst of the flooding, with Governor Roy Cooper saying rescuers were being forced to airlift supplies in some areas due to damaged or flooded roads.

"I don't know that anybody could be fully prepared for the amount of flooding and landslides that they are experiencing right now," Criswell said on CBS, adding that more search and rescue teams were being deployed.

William Ray, director of the state's emergency management department, warned that conditions were still extremely dangerous.

Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina each had more than 100 road closures, she added.

In the Georgia city of Valdosta, the storm ripped the roofs off buildings, and left road intersections a tangle of felled utility poles and trees.

Hurricane Helene: Death toll rises to 93 as Harris, Trump announce plans to visit hard-hit areas

Republican vice presidential candidate, Senator JD Vance, was apparently kicked out of a restaurant while his supporters waited inside for him to address them. In a video going viral on social media, Vance, who was in Pittsburgh, was denied entry to the iconic Primanti Bros. Restaurant and Bar where the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign recently hosted a gathering.

The Ohio senator was initially stopped at the doors Saturday (Sep 28) afternoon while attempting to make a campaign stop, a report in NY Post claimed. The staff of the shop said they were not given any advanced notice about his visit.

One of the restaurant patrons said customers paid for their drinks and cancelled their orders once learning that Vance was not allowed to step inside.

Despite being denied entry, Vance took the rejection graciously and addressed the crowd of supporters gathered outside the establishment.

"We paid for everybody’s food, we gave them a nice tip and, of course, when I gave a nice tip, I said no taxes on tips," Vance said, referring to a Trump proposal.

"It’s all right, don’t hold it against [the worker]. She just got a little nervous, but it’s a great local business. Let’s keep on supporting it."

“VP Harris asserted in Arizona that CBP needed more resources. We have apprehended over 8 million illegal immigrants over the last 4 years and now you realise we need more help 38 days before the election.”
