If you're a member of the Uniformed Services of the United States (US), here is what you need to know when you cast your vote for the November 5 presidential election in the country. The election is less than 10 days away and millions of voters across the country are waiting to exercise their franchise to choose who will be the next president – Donald Trump (Republican Party) or Kamala Harris (Democratic Party). Also read | US presidential election 2024: What ID should you bring on polling day? A look at the guidelines If you are on active duty in one of the country's uniformed services, you are eligible to vote in the election. Here's how: What is UOCAVA? Members of the uniformed services on active duty and their spouses or other dependent family members are eligible to vote under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA). "If you are on active duty in one of our nation’s uniformed services or if you are the spouse or dependent of an active-duty service member, and if you are absent, because of your service or your spouse’s or parent’s service, from the place of your domicile, you are eligible to vote by absentee ballot under the UOCAVA," according to the Overseas Vote Foundation. The UOCAVA requires that the states and territories allow certain groups of citizens to register and vote absentee in elections for federal offices. In addition, most states and territories have laws allowing citizens covered by UOCAVA to register and vote absentee in state and local elections as well. How to apply for an absentee ballot for the election? You should use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to make a simultaneous voter registration application and absentee ballot request, the Overseas Vote Foundation states on its website. > Fill out the FPCA and send it to your election office. > Check your voter registration deadline for the election based on your state. According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), it had been suggested to send the FPCA by August 1. > Your voting residence (the US state or territory where you are registering to vote) is likely your legal residence. Click on this link to determine your voting residence. "Using the FPCA ensures that your state will send your ballot to you at least 45 days before the election," the FVAP states. > For the presidential election, service members on active duty and their kin should have received their ballot by early October. > According to the FVAP, the recommended vote days for the presidential election are – October 1 (for service members on a ship at sea); October 24 (for service members outside the US); and October 31 (for service members at stateside). > If you requested your ballot but haven't received it, contact your election office to ask about the ballot request. > If there isn't enough time to receive and send back your ballot before the election, use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). Click on the link to learn more > The FWAB works like a backup ballot. If your official absentee ballot arrives after sending in the FWAB, fill out and send in the official ballot too. Only one will be counted, the FVAP states. What happens once you submit your FPCA? Once you have submitted your FPCA, an election official will send you (by mail) an unmarked absentee ballot, a set of instructions, an inner envelope, and an outer envelope. Here comes the important part – read and follow the instructions carefully and comply with the requirements of the double-envelope system. > You should mark your ballot in secret and then place the marked ballot in the inner envelope. The inner envelope should have no identifying markings. > You then seal the inner envelope, place it in the outer envelope and seal the outer envelope. > On the back of the outer envelope, which is addressed to the election official, you must complete the affidavit and include your identifying information. > Then you transmit the sealed outer envelope back to the election official.

US presidential election 2024: What ID should you bring on polling day? A look at the guidelines

The influential Washington Post newspaper, owned by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, announced Friday it will endorse neither Democrat Kamala Harris nor Republican Donald Trump in the US presidential election.

CEO William Lewis said this was a return "to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates."

However, the Post editorial board has endorsed candidates for much of the last four decades -- all of them Democrats -- before deciding to stay on the sidelines in one of the most polarizing elections in US history.

Newspaper editorials have little of their once-powerful political heft. But the Post -- whose slogan is "Democracy dies in darkness" -- is one traditional media outlet that retains influence among Washington's elite.

Trump's campaign quickly pounced, crowing that "Harris is so bad, The Washington Post decided to never endorse another presidential candidate again."

The Washington Post Guild, which represents unionized staff at the newspaper, said it was "deeply concerned."

"We are already seeing cancellations from once loyal readers," a statement said.

US media reported that a senior Post figure, editor at large Robert Kagan, had resigned in protest.

The Post's decision follows a similar move by another of the big remaining US newspapers, the Los Angeles Times.

The billionaire owner of the Times blocked the editorial board from issuing an endorsement for Harris, according to editorial editor Mariel Garza, who resigned in response on Wednesday.

According to a report by The Washington Post on its website, Bezos likewise intervened to block the board from publishing its editorial in favor of Harris. However, a source close to the Post's leadership told AFP that this "is inaccurate."

By contrast, The New York Times endorsed Harris in September, calling her "the only patriotic choice for president" and warning that "it is hard to imagine a candidate more unworthy to serve as president of the United States" than Trump.

On Friday, Harris also scored the backing of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the biggest newspaper in swing state Pennsylvania, which declared that "voters face an easy but tectonic choice."

The Republican got his own boost Friday from the New York Post, the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid, which declared that "America is ready for today's heroic Donald Trump to reclaim the presidency."

In a statement, The Washington Post's Lewis wrote that the paper would not make presidential endorsements again.

"Our job at The Washington Post is to provide through the newsroom non-partisan news for all Americans, and thought-provoking, reported views from our opinion team to help our readers make up their own minds," he said.

The Post has been endorsing Democratic candidates consistently as far back as the 1980s, always making clear that the editorial board works separately to the newsgathering operation -- as is typical in US news organizations.

The Post's former executive editor, Marty Baron, lashed out at the daily's "cowardice, with democracy as its casualty."

Baron said that Trump would see the decision "as an invitation to further intimidate" Bezos.

Washington Post says will not endorse Harris or Trump in election

The decision by the Washington Post, an influential newspaper among American elites, to not endorse the Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has now sparked a massive subscription cancellation spree. The Post announced Friday (Oct 25) it will endorse neither Democrat Kamala Harris nor Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election, in a first in 36 years.

The move didn’t go down well with the Democrat-leaning subscribers of the paper, with more than 2,000 of them cancelling their subscriptions in less than 24 hours. Author Stephen King and Star Trek actor George Takei are among influential Americans who have expressed their frustration by cancelling their WaPo subscriptions.

"After 5 years, I have cancelled my subscription to the Washington Post," announced King, a vocal critic of the Republican Party. George Takei meanwhile launched a tirade against WaPo owner Jeff Bezos, saying: “If Jeff Bezos cowers before power, we the consumers should show him ours by staying off Amazon through the election."

Many have dubbed the decision by the WaPo as a betrayal of the paper’s readers.

But it’s not just the readers whose feelings and emotions have been seemingly hurt by the Post; some staffers too have voiced their anger at the decision.

Robert Kagan, an opinion editor-at-large at the Post, said he was tendering his resignation.

"This is obviously an effort by Jeff Bezos to curry favour with Donald Trump in the anticipation of his possible victory," Robert Kagan was quoted as saying by CNN, another Democrat-leaning news broadcaster.

Karen Attiah, a columnist for the Washington Post, also called the decision “a stab in the back.” The journalists’ union for the WaPo said it was deeply concerned at the move.

'You can't be voting for Kamala': Trump asks Joe Rogan to endorse him for November election

What do you give a wealthy client who has everything? Well, Wall Street has come up with a brilliant idea. A Bloomberg report shows the solution is a loss-making investment.

That's the idea behind the latest strategy on Wall Street. This is a clever twist on the well-known tax-loss harvesting technique, a contentious aspect of wealth management for many years.

The practice of selling losing investments to reduce the tax owed on profits made elsewhere in a portfolio is known as tax-loss harvesting.

Although it's a useful instrument frequently used in equities ownership, it has a significant drawback. An investor doesn't always have a loss-making investment. This can be particularly true in the US stock market, which has tripled in the last decade and continues to set new milestones.

Anyone concerned about growing wealth disparity will likely be alarmed by this slick Wall Street move. Most investors cannot afford tax long-short methods. Like with other tax-loss harvesting tactics, the wealthiest often reap the rewards from such tricks.

Americans do not pay capital gains taxes until they decide to sell an asset. That rule has withstood several challenges in recent months. President Joe Biden has suggested taxing the unrealised earnings of the ultra-wealthy.

While Kamala Harris has previously supported Biden's concept, she has not stated whether she will pursue such legislation.

Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside former President Barack Obama as she made a final push to win over voters, with only two weeks left until Election Day. The event featured a musical performance by Bruce Springsteen and a guest appearance from filmmaker Tyler Perry.

The event attracted several high-profile attendees, including director Spike Lee, media mogul Tyler Perry, and renowned actor Samuel L. Jackson.

During the rally, Springsteen expressed concerns shared by Democrats and some former Trump administration officials, saying, "Donald Trump is running to be an American tyrant." The singer, famous for his socially aware, working-class anthems, performed three songs, including “The Promised Land,” adding to Harris’s appeal to blue-collar voters.

Harris is enlisting the support of well-known celebrities in key states to gain an edge over her opponent, Donald Trump. Reports suggest she will appear with Beyoncé in Texas later this week, part of a series of events in battleground regions.

At the Atlanta event, Harris encouraged Georgia voters to make their voices heard. Georgia, which turned blue for the first time since 1992 four years ago, also shifted control of the US Senate to the Democrats. She warned of “brutally serious” consequences if Trump were to win the presidency again, adding, “Someone who says we should terminate the Constitution of the United States of America should never again stand behind the seal of the president of the United States of America. Never again.”

Harris made a special appeal to young voters, emphasising the need for new, hopeful leadership. “There is an overwhelming call for a fresh start, for a new generation of leadership that is optimistic and excited about what we can do together,” Harris said.

"There is a yearning for a president of the United States who will see you, who gets you and who will fight for you,” she added.

Obama spoke to the crowd, acknowledging that many people desire change but argued that Trump was not the candidate who would deliver positive change. “I get why people are looking to shake things up,” he said, referring to his own 2008 campaign slogan. “But what I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump would shake things up in ways that are good for you, he added.”

Several prominent stars of the Hollywood lobby have come in support of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. And, if recent reports are to be believed, the most recent one who will be supporting Harris in the presidential race is none other than the Queen - Beyonce!

Months after the popstar permitted Harris to play her song ''Freedom'' during her presidential campaign, The Washington Post reported that the singer will be joining the Vice President at her campaign rally in Houston on Friday.

Only two weeks are left for the election, and Harris is reportedly going to campaign with the Houston girl Beyonce, who has yet not publicly endorsed her. However, Beyonce granting permission to use her song in the campaign clearly indicates that Harris has all her support.

However, there is no official confirmation on this yet.

Apart from Beyonce, her mother, Tina Knowles and Willie Nelson will be joining Harris in the rally on Friday.

Beyoncé's mother is a vocal supporter of the Democratic party and Harris. After Joe Biden stepped down as presidential candidate, Knowles took to social media and wrote, "New, Youthful, Sharp, energy!!!! Putting personal Ego, power and fame aside. That is the definition of a great leader. Thank you, President Biden, for your service and your leadership. Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go."

Before this, it was reported that Beyonce would be a surprise guest at the Democratic National Convention in August. However, the reports turned out to be false after the Grammy-winner did not make the appearance.

Meanwhile, Harris' campaign rally in Atlanta will see a bunch of stars: from former president Barack Obama to rock legend Bruce Springsteen, actor Samuel L. Jackson, director Spike Lee, and filmmaker Tyler Perry among others.

In 2020, Beyonce endorsed President Joe Biden and before that, she performed national anthem at former President Barack Obama’s first inauguration in 2008.

U.S. Elections 2024: Survey Shows Donald Trump Ahead by Two Points Over Kamala Harris

With the 2024 United States presidential election just around the corner, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump have a strong lead in the polls.

With the 2024 United States presidential election just around the corner, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump have a strong lead in the polls. When it comes to elections, past or future, the economy is usually the top concern for voters. Understanding a presidential candidate's economic policies is an important part of making an informed choice regarding who to vote for. A new poll by the Associated Press and NORC shows that Harris is gaining ground on key economic issues that affect the middle class. The poll shows a shift from last month, where Trump had a bigger lead on handling the economy. Now, 46 per cent of voters prefer Harris' middle-class tax policies, compared to 35 per cent for Trump. Harris also has a slight edge on housing costs, according to the polls. Voters are split on who has better plans for grocery prices, gas, job creation, and unemployment. Most voters (62 per cent) think the economy is in bad shape, while 38 per cent say it's not. Trump's critique vs Harris' 'opportunity economy' Trump's campaign is focused on rising inflation and the higher cost of living under President Joe Biden. Since Harris took over as the Democratic nominee in July, she has responded by promoting what she calls an "opportunity economy." As a part of her plan, Harris has promised to help first-time homebuyers with $25,000 for a down payment on a new home. Here's a broad comparison of Trump's and Harris' economic policies: Where do they stand on taxes? One of the biggest differences between Harris and Trump is their tax policy. Also read: US confirms North Korean troops in Russia, says they would be 'legitimate' targets in Ukraine Harris plans to raise the corporate tax rate from 21 per cent to 28 per cent, whereas Trump wants to lower it to 15-20 per cent. On personal taxes, Harris wants to raise the rate for those making over $400,000 by letting the 2017 tax cuts expire. Trump, however, wants to make those tax cuts permanent. What about trade policies? Harris has criticised Trump’s broad tariffs on imports, saying it amounts to a tax on working families, costing each household about $4,000 a year. She prefers a more targeted approach, keeping some tariffs on Chinese imports, like electric vehicles. Trump, on the other hand, has promised a 10-20 per cent tax on most foreign goods, with even higher tariffs on Chinese imports. He also wants to encourage companies to stay in the US by offering lower corporate taxes. How do they differ on regulations? Harris supports raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, offering student debt relief, and expanding enforcement of antitrust laws. On the other hand, Trump wants to cut regulations across the board, speed up mergers and acquisitions, and reclassify more civil servants as political appointees. What are their plans to fight inflation? Harris says her first goal would be to lower food and housing costs for working families. She’s promised to ban price gouging on groceries, help first-time homebuyers, and increase housing supply through incentives. Inflation surged during Biden’s presidency, partly due to Covid-related supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine. However, recently, inflation has started to come down. Trump plans to "end inflation" by increasing oil drilling, which he believes will lower energy prices. He’s also promised to lower interest rates, although that’s something the president can’t control. The former US president also claims deporting undocumented immigrants would ease housing demand.

A California journalist at the Los Angeles Times (LA Times) Mariel Garza resigned from the paper after its owner blocked the endorsement of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

Garza, who has worked with the paper's editorial department for over a decade, wrote in her resignation letter saying she has been "struggling with the feelings about the implications" of the department's silence on the matter.

"I told myself that presidential endorsements don't really matter; that California was not ever going to vote for Trump; that no one would even notice," Garza wrote further.

She further talked about the Democratic nominee Donald Trump saying the paper has written so many 'Trump is unfit' editorials that it was assumed it was endorsing Kamala Harris.

"But the reality hit me like cold water when the news rippled out about the decision not to endorse," she added further.

"Of course, it matters that the largest newspaper in the state, one of the largest in the nation, still declined to endorse in a race this important. And it matters that we won't even be straight with people about it."

Garza also claimed that the decision of not endorsing Harris is "hypocritical," "sexist," and "racist" as well.

"It makes us look craven and hypocritical, maybe even a bit sexist and racist. How could we spend eight years railing against Trump and the danger his leadership poses to the country and then fail to endorse the perfectly decent challenger," she wrote in her resignation.

In an apparent response to Garza's claims after her resignation, the paper's owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, responded via an X post saying the editorial board was given the "opportunity to draft a factual analysis of all the positive and negative policies by each candidate during their tenures at the White House."

Los Angeles Times journalist resigns after owner blocks endorsement of 'perfectly decent' Kamala Harris

After staying away from politics for decades, Bill Gates is showing significant interest in the US presidential election as he privately donated $50 million to the Democratic Presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

According to The New York Times, the Microsoft founder did not directly endorse Harris but donated the money to a non-profit organisation which is supporting Harris' presidential run.

Responding to the NYT report, Gates said in a statement that he decided to get involved in the US election because “this election is different.”

“I support candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to improving health care, reducing poverty and fighting climate change in the U.S. and around the world. I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum, but this election is different, with unprecedented significance for Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world,” The New York Times reported quoting Gates.

The report also said that the sizable donation was specifically made to Future Forward, known as a “dark money” organisation as it does not disclose its donors.

The donation, as per the report by the New York Times, was intended to remain anonymous.

Gates also reportedly talked about his pro-Harris donation with his peers, including Mike Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor and a major supporter of Future Forward.

Bloomberg has also reportedly donated a similar amount in support of Harris' presidential run.

The report also claimed that Gates has expressed concerns about the potential impact of a second Donald Trump presidency on global health and family planning programs.

Bill Gates backs Kamala Harris by secretly donating $50 million for her presidential run: Report

The Georgia Supreme Court on Tuesday (Oct 22) rejected an appeal by the Republican Party to reinstate controversial last-minute election rules that have been invalidated by a lower court.

Last week, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cox ruled that the new rules adopted by the Georgia State Election Board — led by a pro-Trump majority — were "illegal, unconstitutional and void."

Republicans, including the Republican National Committee and the Georgia GOP, had appealed the ruling, seeking to reinstate the rules in an expedited manner before Election Day.

In a unanimous decision, the Georgia's highest court declined to expedite the appeal or put the lower court's ruling on hold.

This means that Cox's invalidation of the rules will stay in place, and the appeal will "proceed in the ordinary course," meaning it could take months before a final ruling is made.

Which rules were invalidated?

The new election rules were passed by the State Election Board's three-member Republican majority in August and September, close to the Nov 5 election date. This was done despite opposition from the board's lone Democrat and non-partisan chair.

According to AFP, those in favour of the controversial rule are staunch Donald Trump backers, and were even praised by the ex-president as "pit bulls" fighting for "victory."

Where do Harris and Trump stand on them?

The changes also met with strong resistance from local election officials, who expressed concerns over the timing of the rules just weeks before the general election and voiced fear that the last-minute changes could cause confusion among poll workers and voters.

Among the rules struck down by Cox were provisions requiring three poll workers to count ballots by hand after polls closed, as well as changes to the certification process for county election results.

Democrats and voting rights groups had argued these rules could be exploited to delay or block certification, especially if Trump were to lose the upcoming election.

However, some Republicans argue the rules would promote transparency and accountability.

Republican Scot Turner, a former state representative and leader of the group that filed the lawsuit challenging the seven rules, expressed relief that election workers would not have to implement new procedures just two weeks before Election Day.

Turner criticised the Republican Party's position on the matter. "I hate fighting my friends," he said, as per news agency AP.

"It's unfortunate that the Republican Party has apparently lost their affection for defending constitutional principles like separation of powers. But I’m undeterred, and we will continue to fight," he added.

Georgia GOP chairperson Josh McKoon, however, defended the new rules, calling opposition to them "unimaginably stupid and damaging to public confidence in what is expected to be a closely contested election".

He criticised the court for not resolving the matter quickly and said: "It is supremely disappointing to observe yet another failure of our judicial system".

Meanwhile, voting rights groups celebrated the court's decision. Lauren Groh-Wargo, CEO of Fair Fight, described it as "a huge win for Georgia voters and the rule of law," arguing that the invalidated rules were "part of a larger election denier plot to undermine confidence in our elections".

This was done despite opposition from the board's lone Democrat and non-partisan chair. According to AFP, those in favour of the controversial rule are staunch Donald Trump backers, and were even praised by the ex-president as "pit bulls" fighting for "victory." The changes also met with strong resistance from local election officials, who expressed concerns over the timing of the rules just weeks before the general election and voiced fear that the last-minute changes could cause confusion among poll workers and voters. Reactions to the ruling Republican Scot Turner, a former state representative and leader of the group that filed the lawsuit challenging the seven rules, expressed relief that election workers would not have to implement new procedures just two weeks before Election Day.
