Vice President and the Republican presidential candidate Kamala Harris has campaigned hard to defeat her Democrat rival Donald Trump in the US Presidential election to be held on November 5, 2024. And in this journey, there have been people who have been of immense support to her. One among them is Harris' younger sister Maya Harris.

Who is Maya Harris?

Kamala and Maya were born in Oakland, California to a Jamaican American father and Indian American mother. While both the sisters were young their parents divorced. They then went on to live with their mother after the separation in the early 1970s.

Maya grew up to earn her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and later pursue a career in law from Stanford Law School. It is here that she met her husband Tony West.

Maya herself is inclined towards politics and has played an important role in helping Kamala with her presidential campaign.

She has worked as senior policy adviser for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign's policy agenda. Maya has also served as campaign chairperson of her sister's 2020 presidential campaign.

She also previously served as the vice president of democracy, rights and justice, and an officer of the philanthropic foundation, the Ford Foundation.

Speaking to PEOPLE about the kind of relationship both the sisters share, Maya said, "I will always support her, stand by her side and have her back the way I know she has mine."

"She’s a force. She's fearless, she's relentless, she's tough, she's courageous. I mean, she really has been that way since we were kids. She's never backed down from a challenge," she further added.

US election 2024: Who is Kamala Harris' sister? all about....

As US elections are just around the corner, the tight race between Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump is getting even more intense.

As far as global politics is concerned, whoever wins between Trump and Harris is going to bring some differences in world dynamics.

Impact on NATO

If Trump gets elected, NATO cannot expect much support from the US government then, as the Democratic nominee has made it clear that he will not support those countries that spend less than 2 per cent of their GDP on defence.

However, if Kamala Harris wins, NATO gets full support from the US but not so easily if the senate and the congress – house of representatives – both fall into the hands of the Republicans.

West Asia crisis

The Democratic candidate has been repeatedly affirming Biden's support for Israel's “right to defend itself.” However, she has also stressed that "the killing of innocent Palestinians has to stop."

Meanwhile, Trump has also emphasised that it's time to get back to peace and stop killing people. He has also reportedly told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “do what you have to do", which clearly gives Netanyahu a free hand to pursue what he wants.

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump has never stepped back on reiterating his admiration for strongmen like Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has made it clear that he wants the war to end, assuring support from the US government in terms of military and finances. “I’ll get out. We got to get out,” he said in a recent rally.

Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Harris has clearly said that she is proud to stand with Ukraine. "I will continue to stand with Ukraine. And I will work to ensure Ukraine prevails in this war," she said.

How US presidential election could impact global political landscape

Just a few days back, on Sunday (Oct 27), a comedian at a Donald Trump rally in New York City made the headlines for all the wrong reasons and sent the US election race into the "garbage" so to say.

During his opening set at Madison Square Garden, Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made comments that leaned into racial stereotypes, including a jab calling Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage," sparking widespread backlash.

Who is Tony Hinchcliffe?

Hinchcliffe is a comedian known for making offensive remarks and a "roast" style of insult comedy.

He began his career in 2007 and has opened for the likes of popular comedians like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross.

Since 2013, he has hosted a weekly podcast, "Kill Tony" with the comedian and podcast producer Brian Redban.

In 2020, he made a comment on Kobe Bryant, the day the basketball star died in a helicopter crash. Hinchcliffe, in a risky joke on Twitter (now X), referred to Kobe's reputation of hogging the ball and said: "Kobe passing? That can't be true."

The next year, in 2021, he was in the headlines for using a racial slur to describe Peng Dang, an Asian American stand-up comedian and actor.

At the time, amid heavy criticism, he refused to apologise and told Variety, "I knew that what I had done was not wrong."

"My stance is that comedians should never apologize for a joke, should never stop working if everyone comes after them and should never slow down. In fact, they should utilize anything that happens to them for more material," He added.

Leaning into the racist stereotype that Latinos are preoccupied with childbearing and averse to birth control, the comedian said they "love making babies" and do not "pull out".

"There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now," Hinchcliffe said, adding, "I think it's called Puerto Rico."

Who is Tony Hinchcliffe? The comedian who sent US election into 'garbage'

The 2024 United States presidential election is just days away, with a tightly contested race between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.

The 2024 United States presidential election is just days away, with a tightly contested race between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. While only Americans will vote, the choice between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump has far-reaching global impacts, from conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine to shifts in global trade. India-US relations under Trump versus Harris For India Technology and clean energy have been focal points in US-India relations recently, but this could shift if Trump returns to office. His firm stance on export controls and critiques of India’s tariff policies—often raised during his campaign—could bring new tensions in trade. What each candidate’s victory could mean for Israel and Palestine Amid Israel and Ukraine fighting wars the next president will face a world with the highest conflict risks since the Cold War. Polls indicate that if Israelis could vote, Trump would have significant support. Trump might give Israel an even freer hand in Gaza and elsewhere. Also read: Trump rides garbage truck in uniform for supporters at Wisconsin rally Harris has frequently echoed Biden's strong support for Israel's right to self-defence, while emphasising that “the killing of innocent Palestinians has to stop.” Trump has also stressed the need to “get back to peace and stop killing people,” though he has reportedly advised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “do what you have to do.” Trump has positioned himself as a mediator, vowing, “I will have peace in the Middle East, and soon,” during an interview with Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya TV. The impact of the US election on Russia-Ukraine war This election is significant for Russia and Ukraine, too. Trump has blamed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky for the Russian invasion, raising Ukrainian concerns that a Trump administration could push for a rapid peace deal that favours Russia. Harris, however, has pledged ongoing support for Ukraine, stating: “I have been proud to stand with Ukraine. I will continue to stand with Ukraine. And I will work to ensure Ukraine prevails in this war.” How NATO could be reshaped by the US election results NATO The United States accounts for two-thirds of the combined defence budgets of NATO's other 31 members. Trump has insisted on pressing NATO countries to meet their target of spending 2% of GDP on defence—only 23 nations have reached this goal in 2024. Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of leaving NATO, which could create uncertainty within the alliance. In contrast, if Harris wins, she has expressed a commitment to cooperating with NATO and the European Union to support Ukraine’s success, although she also expects Europe to uphold its defence spending obligations. US elections | Why US Presidential elections matter globally

A popular vote in an election means that when a voter picks up a ballot and marks their preferred candidate's name, those votes are counted directly.

In the United States, the popular vote refers to the total number of votes cast in favour of a candidate, contrasting with the Electoral Votes that ultimately determine who becomes president. While the popular vote does not directly decide the next leader, the candidate who wins the most popular votes in a state typically receives all of that state's Electoral College votes, according to the winner-takes-all rule, implemented in most states.

In US presidential election history, there have been five instances where candidates have won the presidency despite receiving fewer popular votes than their opponents.

US Presidential Election 2000: George W Bush vs. Al Gore

In the 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush defeated Democratic candidate Al Gore, despite securing approximately 500,000 fewer votes nationwide. The decisive state was Florida, where Bush won by a razor-thin margin. Ultimately, Bush received 271 electoral votes—one more than the halfway mark—while Gore won the overall popular vote.

Beyond the presidency, several elections are determined by popular vote, including elections for senators and representatives. Senators are elected based on the total number of popular votes in each state, while House members are elected from their respective congressional districts. Gubernatorial races, state legislative elections, and various municipal offices are also determined by popular vote.

The ongoing disparity between popular and electoral votes has sparked debates about electoral reform. While Electoral College votes ultimately decide who will lead the country, popular votes serve as an important indicator of public support and voter sentiment.

In a post on X, CCDH revealed that among the misleading election posts were debunked claims like the "Democrats are importing illegal voters," or "Trump can't run for presidency," and the one claim touted by Trump himself — "The 2020 election was stolen".

The social media giant's "Community Notes", launched last year, empowers users rather than a dedicated fact-checking team to highlight and counter false content. However, CCDH argues this method may be inadequate for moderating critical information about the upcoming election.

"The problem is that for a Community Note to be shown, it requires consensus, and on polarizing issues, that consensus is rarely reached. As a result, Community Notes fail precisely where they are needed most," said the organisation on its website.

This report follows after X lost a lawsuit brought by the CCDH, which accused the platform of allowing hate speech to increase.

Additionally, in August, election officials from five US states urged Musk in August of this year to address issues with X's AI chatbot, which they claim has been responsible for spreading election-related misinformation.

Musk, who has been big on endorsing Republican Donald Trump's presidential campaign, has himself faced accusations of sharing misleading information.

In a post on X, CCDH revealed that among the misleading election posts were debunked claims like the "Democrats are importing illegal voters," or "Trump can't run for presidency," and the one claim touted by Trump himself — "The 2020 election was stolen". 🚨 NEW: X's Community Notes are failing to counter misleading claims about the US election, despite Musk calling it the "best source of truth on the internet.” We analyzed a sample of accurate Community Notes & found that 74% aren't being shown to users🧵https://t.co/8VGeZpR9a1 — Center for Countering Digital Hate (@CCDHate) October 30, 2024 × X community notes The social media giant's "Community Notes", launched last year, empowers users rather than a dedicated fact-checking team to highlight and counter false content. (With inputs from agencies)

ABC affiliate WNEP-TV 'accidentally' aired the US election results, just a week before the election, showing Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris winning Pennsylvania.

The graphic by the US news agency on Sunday (Oct 27) showed Harris winning the state with 52% of votes while the Republican nominee Donald Trump gained 47% of the votes.

The graphic suddenly popped up during the channel's coverage of the Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix, and now has sparked online conspiracy theories and criticism of the network.

WNEP-TV later clarified that the numbers were generated "randomly" while testing the equipment and that they were not based on any actual votes.

On November 3, 2020, just a few hours after the polls closed, America's most popular conservative channel Fox News struck a body blow to Trump's chances by calling Arizona for Biden.

The announcement, confirmed several days later by other media, infuriated the Trump camp.

"The stakes are very high... there is tremendous pressure to capture viewers by giving them information as quickly as it is available, but the greatest risk is sacrificing accuracy for speed," said Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Northeastern University and former member of the NBC decision desk.

ABC News 'accidently' airs 'random' US election results showing Harris winning Pennsylvania

US Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has found support from an unlikely person. The US Vice-President has got endorsement from none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Hollywood superstar is a Republican and has served as the 38th governor of California from 2003 to 2011.

“I don't really do endorsements. I’m not shy about sharing my views, but I hate politics and don’t trust most politicians.I also understand that people want to hear from me because I am not just a celebrity, I am a former Republican Governor,” wrote Schwarzenegger in a social media post on Wednesday.

He wrote further, “My time as Governor taught me to love policy and ignore politics. I’m proud of the work I did to help clean up our air, create jobs, balance the budget, make the biggest infrastructure investment in state history, and take power from the politicians and give it back to the people when it comes to our redistricting process and our primaries in California.

"That’s policy. It requires working with the other side, not insulting them, to win your next election, and I know it isn’t sexy to most people, but I love it when I can help make people’s lives better with policies, like I still do through my institute at USC, where we fight for clean air and stripping the power from the politicians who rig the system against the people.”

The actor further admitted he hates politics and would want to tune out but cannot as much as he wished to.

“I will always be an American before I am a Republican. That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” wrote Schwarzenegger. “I’m sharing it with all of you because I think there are a lot of you who feel like I do. You don’t recognise our country. And you are right to be furious. For decades, we’ve talked about the national debt. For decades, we’ve talked about comprehensive immigration reform that secures the border while fixing our broken immigration system. And Washington does nothing."

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are contesting for the US Presidential elections which will take place on November 5.

Schwarzenegger also took digs at Trump’s behaviour and his role in inciting the January 6 insurrection.

“But a candidate who won’t respect your vote unless it is for him, a candidate who will send his followers to storm the Capitol while he watches with a Diet Coke, a candidate who has shown no ability to work to pass any policy besides a tax cut that helped his donors and other rich people like me but helped no one else, a candidate who thinks Americans who disagree with him are the bigger enemies than China, Russia, or North Korea - that won’t solve our problems,” wrote the superstar.

The Archbishop of San Juan, Roberto O. González Nieves, has publicly called on former US President Donald Trump to issue a personal apology for the offensive remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally in New York City.

"I enjoy a good joke," said the archbishop in a letter posted to Facebook. "However, humour has its limits. It should not insult or denigrate the dignity and sacredness of people. Hinchcliffe's remarks do not only provoke sinister laughter but hatred."

US Election 2024: Avoid voter suppression with these essential tips

In less than a week, millions in the United States will cast their ballot in the hard-to-predict 2024 US Presidential elections. With recent polls showing the two top candidates — Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris — engaged in a neck-to-neck race, every vote matters.

If you or someone you know has a disability and is confused about voting easily, do not fret. In America, there are specific laws to ensure that voters with special needs do not face any barriers while casting their votes.

Here's a lowdown:

Laws for voters with disabilities

There are several federal laws that protect the voting rights of Americans with disabilities. These include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).

HAVA, 2002, mandates that every polling station must have at least one Accessible Voting Machine (AVM).

While many states let people with disabilities vote absentee by mail, voters with disabilities have the right to vote in private, without help at a polling booth; Have an accessible polling place with special voting machines.

Here's the lowdown

Polling places are required to have wheelchair-accessible voting booths; entrances and doorways at least 32 inches wide; handrails on all stairs and voting equipment for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Voters with a disability may seek help from poll workers trained to use an accessible voting machine or bring someone to help them vote.

Some states also offer "curbside voting," when a poll worker brings them everything they need to vote from their car. Alternatively, some local organisations also provide transportation to the polls.

What is an AVM?

Accessible Voting Machines (AVMs) are voting equipment designed to meet a range of needs, including support for voters with mobility, visual, auditory, or cognitive disabilities.

These are usually equipped with touchscreens (so the user doesn't have to handle a physical ballot), audio assistance, braille keypads (for visually impaired voters) etc.

The usa.gov website suggests that voters with a disability should contact their state or local election office for accommodations they may need.

Kennedy argued that staying on the ballot violated his First Amendment rights by misleading voters and wrongly implying that he still wanted to be the US president.

US Supreme Court blocks Robert Kennedy Jr's appeal to remove his name from ballots—but why?

Shares of Trump Media rallied more than 8 per cent on October 29 after whipsawing in the company’s heaviest and most volatile trading day since going public, according to a detailed report by CNBC.

The company is majorly owned by Donald Trump, which trades as DJT on the Nasdaq, experienced five separate halts within the first two hours of frenzied, high-volume trading.

Trump Media stock price action

The first five-minute halt occurred at 9:36 am ET, when shares were trading up around 14 per cent. Trading was halted a second time at 9:42 am, with shares up nearly 9 per cent. The company was halted again at 9:50 am.

When it was halted for a fourth time at 10:21 am, the stock was down more than 2 per cent. Trading was halted again 10 minutes later. The stock then turned positive, and closed up 8.76 per cent at $51.51 per share.

Further, nearly 16 million Trump Media shares changed hands in the first 10 minutes of the trading day. By 10:15 am, the company had already surpassed its 30-day average trading volume of 35.1 million shares.

By 1:15 pm, Trump Media’s volume surpassed 134 million shares, the highest level since October 2021, when the then-private media company announced plans to merge with the blank-check firm known as DWAC.

The CNBC report further stated that merger was completed in late March, allowing the newly public Trump Media to trade on the Nasdaq. Trump Media’s current stock price remains below the company’s intraday peak from its trading debut.

Tuesday’s volatile session came after DJT stock had already surged more than 21 per cent on October 28, also on extremely heavy trading volume.

Those gains added to a pre-election stock rally that began in late September, after a months-long sell-off that dragged the company’s share price below $12. Just a few weeks later, Trump Media shares were trading at more than four times that price.

Trump Media stock has rallied by more than 200% in a month

The stock as of October 29, morning was up 224 per cent so far this month, and is on pace for its best month since October 2021. The company’s stock now far exceeds its recent peak in mid-July, when its share price soared after the Republican presidential nominee narrowly survived an assassination attempt.

Trump owns nearly 57 per cent of the company, which operates the Truth Social platform. His stake at Monday’s closing price was worth upward of $5.4 billion, representing more than half of his on-paper net worth, according to Forbes. At the closing bell on October 29, the value of Trump’s stake had grown by nearly $500 million. Further, in-spite of losing hundreds of millions of dollars on scant revenue in recent fiscal quarters, Trump Media boasts a market capitalization above $10 billion.

Rally seen as a reaction to the upcoming US elections

Prominent analysts believe the company’s many pro-Trump retail investors are buying its stock to support the former president, or bet on his odds of beating Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.

The CNBC report further stated that, Monday’s surge followed Trump’s major campaign rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Sunday. The company’s gains have also coincided with political betting markets, such as Polymarket and Kalshi, tilting toward Trump over Harris in recent weeks.

Odds and gambling platforms do not use the same methods used by traditional political polling, and therefore are not substitutes for political polls. Critics have raised concerns that the election betting markets are being manipulated.

Market participants and investors are going to closely follow these developments and the results of the upcoming US elections to take informed investments calls with regards to the Trump Media stock, as victory for the former President can propel the stock rally even more.

Trump Media closes 8% higher after rollercoaster trading session

Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called his New York rally a “lovefest” after he was slammed for crude and racist remarks, news agency AP reported.

During his Madison Square Garden rally in New York, several speakers made crude comments including a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, saying Puerto Rico was a “floating island of garbage.”

Instead of apologising, Trump took a different stance, saying it was an “honour to be involved” in and praising it.

“The love in that room. It was breathtaking,” the former president said. “It was like a lovefest, an absolute lovefest. And it was my honour to be involved.”

However, he distanced himself from Hinchcliffe’s remarks and told Fox News on Tuesday (Oct 29) that he doesn’t know anything about Hinchcliffe and “can’t imagine it’s a big deal.” Although, later he said that “probably he shouldn’t have been there.” Trump said this in the swing state of Pennsylvania two days after the New York rally.

In an interview with ABC News on Tuesday, Trump said, “I don’t know him. Someone put him up there. I don’t know who he is.”

A liability for Trump's campaign?

With just a week left for Election Day, Trump allies have expressed concern over the incident, calling the event a liability. Puerto Ricans who live in Pennsylvania and other important swing states hold great electoral significance.

“This is not a time to have anyone criticize Puerto Rico or Latinos,” former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley told Fox News Channel in an interview. Haley earlier challenged Trump for the GOP presidential nomination but later endorsed him.

Later Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania’s Allentown, a city with a large Hispanic population. He was joined by Puerto Rico’s shadow U.S. senator, Zoraida Buxo, who defended the former president.

“We need this man to be our commander in chief,” said Buxo, who cannot vote in the Senate because Puerto Rico is not a state. “He will make us feel safe and he will protect us.”

However, anger in Allentown lingers on as some voters criticised the racial comments made against Latinos, Blacks, Jews and Palestinians. Some sexist insults were also targetted at Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump’s Democratic rival and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Morning brief: US urges Israel to address Gaza humanitarian crisis; Harris' closing argument speech, and more

Jeff Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post, on Monday (Oct 28) defended the publication's decision to not endorse Democratic Party's presidential nominee Kamala Harris. In an opinion piece published on the Post's website, Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com and Blue Origin, said it was a "principled decision".

This comes as reports claimed that more than 200,000 users, about 8 per cent of its total subscribers, have cancelled their online subscriptions to the Washington Post after the popular news outlet decided not to endorse a candidate in the upcoming US presidential elections.

"What presidential endorsements actually do is create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence," Bezos wrote.

"Ending them is a principled decision."

Bezos also denied allegations that the lack of endorsement had something to do with the meeting between Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp meeting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"I would also like to be clear that no quid pro quo of any kind is at work here," said Bezos.

"Neither campaign nor candidate was consulted or informed at any level or in any way about this decision. It was made entirely internally," he added.

Bezos claimed that even he did not know about Limp meeting Trump on the day of the announcement and said: "I sighed when I found out because I knew it would provide ammunition to those who would like to frame this as anything other than a principled decision."

"There is no connection between it and our decision on presidential endorsements, and any suggestion otherwise is false," he stressed.

For the last four decades, the Washington Post has consistently endorsed Democrat candidates, said a report in AFP news agency.

However, this year, just days ahead of the too-close-to-call, neck-to-neck election race between Harris and Trump, Post decided to refrain from doing so.

The Washington Post row came close on the heels of a similar controversy at another influential US newspaper, the Los Angeles Times.

In a surprise move, the billionaire owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked the paper's plans to endorse Harris.

A wave of resignations followed, including three members of the LA Times editorial board led by Mariel Garza.

Hundreds of subscriptions were cancelled.

Later, the owner's daughter, the activist Nika Soon-Shiong, claimed to have influenced the decision.

She suggested that the endorsement of Harris was blocked over the US vice president's support for the Israeli military operation against Hamas in Gaza in response to the terror attacks of October 7 last year.
