Much of the US election results are, in a manner of speaking, 'taken over' by the media outlets, particularly TV channels like CNN, Fox News, NBC News, ABC News and CBS News, who keep projecting and 'calling the election' for different states based on their mathematical calculations.

The only news organisation that's officially allowed to declare elections is the Associated Press News agency.

The first states to close polling from 7 pm Eastern Time will start these trends. This will continue up to 1 am, November 6, when polls close last in Hawaii and Alaska.

As soon as the election is over, the exit polls will start trickling in, besides the state-level projections.

Exit polls, which will also include public opinion on various issues, could be a strong indicator of how people have voted.

What one should watch out for are the projections for the battleground states. This time, there are seven: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Remember the magic number 270

Remember that the popular vote does not decide American presidential elections.

The picture will become clearer only when we know how many electoral votes each candidate got.

Among swing states, the polls will close first in Georgia.

Whatever projections come out of Georgia could set the tone for the rest of the night. Unless there are legal challenges, Georgia could be the first state to declare who won its 16 electoral college votes, out of the total 538 for the whole nation.

Also read: Donald Trump vows he'll revive Alien Enemies Act during final campaign rally. Here's what it is

That could be delayed, if there are questions and lawsuits like last time.

Nationally, the Electoral College vote majority mark is 270, and whoever gets that number wins the election, irrespective of the popular vote.

While swing states are keenly watched, early results could come from small, non-battleground states.

Along with the presidential elections, several local polls are being held on November 5, whose results will trickle in throughout the election night and subsequent hours.

In cases where there are disputes, these results- federal or local - could drag on for days or months.

Two scenarios: Order vs Chaos

In case of an orderly election, the picture will be clear as soon as most of the swing state electoral college vote results are in, as long as the states considered non-battlegrounds suddenly spring surprises.

Already, there's such a surprise happening with Iowa, where according to polls, Trump - earlier thought to be winning- might face a challenge.

Where are the candidates going to be?

Trump will be watching the results and addressing supporters from a convention centre in Palm Beach, Florida.

Harris will be with her supporters at Howard University, a traditionally Black educational institution where she had studied.

Concede or not concede, that's the question

If the results are clear-cut, and there's no room for suspense or suspicion, the losing candidate traditionally concedes defeat on election night itself.

Once the concession speech/message is delivered by the losing candidate, the winner addresses his or her supporters with a victory speech.

But this election is far from 'traditional'.

Already there are court cases about dropped ballots, eligibility and citizenship questions, and vote suppression allegations.

The rivals, particularly Republicans, are fighting for each vote.

So it would be better to concentrate on what happens if the elections are not orderly.

In other words, what if one candidate does not concede?

At several counting centres, the Republicans - or Democrats, though that seems highly unlikely - could file numerous lawsuits challenging the outcome and seeking recounts.

The recounts, if ordered by the courts, can take hours or even days, as it is a laborious yet thorough process.

It is highly unlikely that Kamala Harris would not concede if the verdict is clearly favouring Trump.

But if Trump appears to lose, it could be a different scenario altogether, if we go by last time.

There is, however, a possible change of heart in Trump if he loses as per some experts, because of two key reasons.

One is that he is already facing court cases related to the 2021 Capitol riots, which resulted from his refusal to accept the results.

A repeat of those 'crimes' could only see him going in and out of court for the rest of his life.

Two, there's frankly not much left for him to fight for, as this is possibly his last shot at the White House given his advanced age.

What if states are not called by Election Night?

Things could get dragged on for days, or weeks, pending legal battles.

In 2020, several states were not called due to recounting or lawsuits.

This is quite possible as the opinion polls are saying that it is a tight race.

Such a long night happened in 2000 when votes were recounted in many parts after the contest between incumbent Republican President George W Bush and his Democratic challenger Al Gore. That election was ultimately settled by the US Supreme Court, in favour of Bush.

In the 2020 election, battleground states of Pennsylvania and Nevada were called four days after election day, while it took more than a week for Arizona.

A delay in results, along with possible instigations by Trump and his surrogates, could rile up his supporters. That could lead to protests, counterprotests, violence and arrests.

Will Americans keep calm this election season?

Only hours left to know.

US election riots likely? Fences up, snipers, National Guard on standby to prevent 2020 redux

The custom of holding US elections on Tuesday has its roots in the twentieth century, taking into consideration factors such as farming schedules, church attendance patterns, and many other sociological aspects that were dominant then. While, of course, these considerations have changed quite significantly, that part of the southeastern states still bears this tradition, as there were some historical reasons for making Tuesday a voting day.

Revelling in Culture and Practicality

In the early 1800s, the US was mostly a structured agricultural society. They did not have a big population, but most Americans were farmers who lived miles away from the poll centre, most of which were in the urban areas. Voting within these hinterland regions could take more than a day to get to the nearest grown-up voting place, even worse in return. In some religiously hardened societies, dominion was considered inappropriate as such days were reserved for worship; thus, it made no sense to conduct elections on Sunday. Furthermore, opinions were not held on Monday because it would require the citizens and the farmers to travel on a Saturday.

But still, it was also impossible to use a Wednesday because such a day was used by most men to go to the market and sell the produce. Therefore, this made Tuesday the most reasonable day. It was possible for the voters who wanted to vote to travel on Monday, vote on Tuesday and then return in time for the Wednesday market day or any other engagement.

The Date Determining Authority of Congress: A Brief Discussion

The tradition of holding presidential elections on a Tuesday was instituted in 1845 when Congress directed that Election Day be designated “on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November”. This measure was aimed at making sure that elections were held in all states at favourable periods and uniformity prevailed among states on the date of holding elections. November was perceived as the best month since it came at the end of the season in most states and before the onset of snowfall, giving a period when people could move about easily, especially the country folks.

Contemporary Perspectives and Proposals for Transformation

The days of the week were instituted in the State of Colorado as days on which it was acceptable to hold elections decades ago, mainly because of legal reasons that have nothing to say about the culture of the state concerned. Numerous suggestions have arisen regarding this concern, including moving the elections to the weekend and making it a public holiday due to the problems with participation since many citizens do not vote on working days. This Is because it would call for some legislative changes at the minimum and a change of culture.

Aware of Setbacks, Yet Unwavering in Their Devotion to the New Constitution

The fact that election day continues to be observed on a Tuesday reveals the extent of how practical issues of a different time still influence Americans' way of casting their votes. These historical elements might also seem useless as they belong to the past but are still fundamental in conducting elections, thus showing the relevance of previous practices to present-day society.

Sticking to Tuesday as a Dedicated Day for Election

Sticking to Tuesday as a dedicated day for elections has modern implications that mostly concern the level of participation of the people. Most people find it difficult to vote due to the working hours, restrictions in the hours of polling, and problems associated with transportation. This arrangement tends to depress, especially, the young voters who are poorly paid and work on an hourly basis, and hence there are likely to be fewer voters. Others even go a notch higher, calling for the shift of the election day to the weekend or declaring it as a public holiday to avoid long queues and ensure more people participate so that democracy gets better.

Proposed Alternatives and Ongoing Debates

In addition to Tuesday voting, some proposed alternatives include shifting the day of elections to the weekend, instituting a national holiday, and increasing mail-in or advance voting options. Proponents of this view contend that such changes would enhance access to the electoral process, particularly for individuals who have rigid working hours, and in turn increase turnout. Yet, the critics are worried about the practical implementation challenges, the costs that would be incurred, and the risks of prolonged election campaigning activities. The discourse revolves also around assessing the need for early voting practices and the issues of safeguarding election security and integrity in view of the proposed changes.
US Elections: Why do all elections take place on Tuesday of November’s first full week?

Donald Trump held his final rally in Macon, Georgia, on Sunday (Nov 2), where he drew a large crowd to the Atrium Health amphitheatre. Arriving an hour and a half late, Trump sported a black-and-gold "Make America Great Again" cap and stuck to his characteristic themes, including controversial proposals related to immigration and crime.

During the rally, Trump announced his intention to bring back the Alien Enemies Act of 1790.

What is the Alien Enemies Act of 1790?

The Alien Enemies Act of 1790 allows the US president to detain, relocate, or deport non-citizens from a country considered an enemy of the US during wartime. According to the Guardian, it has historically been used to relocate and detain Japanese, Italian, and German Americans during World War II.

Trump also suggested that he would pursue the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of killing Americans.

"The United States is now an occupied country. This is thousands of people all over our towns and cities," he said.

Trump referenced the recent murder of Minelys "Mimi" Zoe Rodriguez-Ramirez in Cornelia, Georgia, claiming that the suspect was in the US illegally. He then brought Rodriguez-Ramirez's mother, Carmen, to the stage.

"I lose my daughter, but I don’t lose my faith," she said, endorsing Trump as "the best choice for the USA".

"I met Donald Trump in person. He's the most wonderful person that I've seen."

Minelys "Mimi" Zoe Rodriguez-Ramirez, a TikToker, was found dead last month. A 24-year-old man named Angel DeJesus Rivera-Sanches has been arrested in connection to her abduction and murder.

Trump calls retired military generals 'stupid'

Trump, on Sunday, in another rally, criticised retired military leaders, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark Milley and former Defense Secretary James Mattis calling them "stupid". These remarks come as each of these retired generals has criticised Trump, with Kelly last month describing him as "fascist to the core".

As the 2024 US elections approach, Indian-Americans are prioritizing immigration and unemployment as critical issues influencing their voting decisions. Many in this community are advocating for comprehensive immigration reform to address challenges faced by families and professionals. Additionally, concerns about job opportunities and economic stability resonate strongly, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. Indian-American voters are mobilizing to ensure their voices are heard on these pivotal topics, aiming to shape policies that impact their lives and communities.

Key Concerns For Indian-Americans In The 2024 US Elections: Immigration and Unemployment

United States Vice President Kamala Harris criticised US House Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday (Nov 1) after he mentioned he would “probably” work to repeal the CHIPS and Science Act during a campaign event. Johnson later retracted his statement, explaining in a joint message with Representative Brandon Williams that he had “misheard” the question.

Speaking to reporters in Milwaukee, Harris addressed the issue directly, “I also want to speak to the comments that have been recently made by the speaker of the House. It is just further evidence of everything that I’ve actually been talking about for months now, about [former President Donald] Trump’s intention to implement Project 2025.”

It is just further evidence of everything that I’ve actually been talking about for months now, about [former President Donald] Trump’s intention to implement Project 2025.” “It is my plan and intention to continue to invest in American manufacturing,” Harris continued. Harris responded to Johnson’s retraction, saying, “Let’s be clear why he walked it back. Because it’s not popular. Kamala Harris faces criticism for SNL appearance ahead of US Election Day

Donald Trump, hitting back at Mark Cuban for his statement claiming that the Republican allegedly avoids strong, intelligent women in his circles, called the billionaire a "very insecure guy".

'Tremendously strong women'

Appearing on Fox & Friends, on Saturday (Nov 2) Trump pushed back on Cuban's comment and highlighted his wife Melania and advisers like Kellyanne Conway and Susie Wiles as examples of strong women in his orbit.

Trump pointed out that he happens to be married to a particularly strong woman who just had a No. 1 bestseller book, and said, "I have given women chances too. Kellyanne was the head of my 2016 victory. Susie Wiles is strong…I have tremendously strong women".

"Well, I know Mark Cuban. He is a very insecure guy. Can't hit a golf ball more than 50 yards. He's weak physically and mentally...I have known him for a long time. He would call me in the White House incessantly and finally, I just couldn't take his calls anymore and then he went over the other side. He's a guy that wants publicly. When he said that...you know he totally retracted his statement..," claimed Trump.

Cuban, while appearing on The View, had suggested that Trump avoids women who challenge him, particularly on issues like reproductive rights.

Addressing his campaign's recent ads targeting transgender athletes, Trump invited members of a local college swim team onstage and pledged to support "women’s rights in sports."

Taking direct aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, he criticised "Kamala's economy," and said that the Democrat's handling of the economy was a cause of "depression" rather than recession. He promised tax relief measures, such as eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security, and proposed increased oil drilling to reduce energy costs.

US election sabotage? Musk-linked group behind anti-Harris disinformation, 'Progress 2028' manifesto: Report

Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump head to North Carolina on Saturday to try to clinch support in the southeastern battleground state just three days before Tuesday's US presidential election.

It will be the fourth day in a row that Vice President Harris and former President Trump visit the same state on the same day, underlining the critical importance of the seven states likely to decide the race, which opinion polls show to be on a knife's edge.

More than 70 million Americans have already cast ballots, according to the Election Lab at the University of Florida, below the record early-voting pace in 2020 during COVID-19, but still indicating a high level of voter enthusiasm.

Saturday also marks the last day of early voting in North Carolina, where over 3.8 million votes have been cast, while the state's western reaches are still recovering from Hurricane Helene's deadly flooding.

Also read: Trump hints at key roles for Elon Musk, RFK Jr. if he wins; claims only ‘cheating’ would cause election loss

Harris plans appearances with rock star Jon Bon Jovi in Charlotte, the biggest city in North Carolina, which is tied with Georgia for the second-biggest prize of the swing states. Each has 16 votes in the Electoral College, where 270 are needed to secure the presidency.

North Carolina backed Trump in 2020 by a narrow margin of less than 1.5 percentage points, and elected a Democratic governor on the same day, giving hope to both parties.

"It is my plan and intention to continue to invest in American manufacturing, the work being done by American workers, upholding and lifting up good union jobs," Harris said Saturday morning in Wisconsin, as she left for North Carolina. "That is the way we are going to win the competition with China for the 21st century."

Trump will hold a rally in Gastonia, west of Charlotte, at noon (1600 GMT) before returning to the state in the evening, where he is due to speak at the 22,000-seat First Horizon Coliseum arena in Greensboro.

"This election is a choice between whether we...have four more years of gross incompetence and failure, or whether we will begin the four greatest years in the history of our country," Trump told a crowd in Michigan on Friday.

Policy differences

Harris and Trump have very different policies on major issues including support for Ukraine and NATO, abortion rights, immigration, taxes, democratic principles and tariffs, which reflect the schisms between the Democratic and Republican parties.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said Friday that if Trump wins and Republicans control Congress, his party would "probably" repeal the CHIPS Act, passed under Joe Biden's administration, which gave over $50 billion in subsidies to companies for semiconductor chip manufacturing and research in the United States.

Democrats have seized on the remarks. "It is further evidence of everything I've actually been talking about for months now, about Trump's intention to implement project 2025," Harris said Saturday, referring to a conservative blueprint to remake US government and policies that was written with the help of many of Trump's closest advisers.

Johnson walked back his remarks later on Friday, saying the act would be streamlined to eliminate regulations.

Harris and Trump were both in North Carolina on Wednesday, Nevada on Thursday and Wisconsin on Friday - all battleground states - at one point holding events around 7 miles (11 km) from each other.

It indicates the enormous effort put on persuading a relatively small number of voters in a few states because the other states are seen as safely Democratic or Republican.

But Trump will also visit Salem, Virginia, on Saturday despite polls showing a clear lead there for Harris.

Harris will also be in the swing state of Georgia on Saturday, where film director Spike Lee and singer Victoria Monet are due to speak at a rally.

President Biden, a Democrat, won Georgia by just 0.3 percentage points in 2020, the first time his party had picked up the state since Bill Clinton in 1992.

Democrats will be heavily reliant on Black voters turning out and backing Harris if they want to recreate Biden's success in a state where Black people make up just over 12 per cent of the population.

Hispanics, who total nearly 19 per cent of Georgia's population, are also being fought over. Trump holds a narrow 1.6 percentage-point lead over Harris in the state, according to the polling average from FiveThirtyEight.

Heading into the final stretch, on Monday the Harris campaign plans to hold simultaneous interconnected organizing events across all seven battleground states to mobilize voters, according to a senior campaign official.
