With just hours left for the presidential election in the United States (US), intelligence agencies warned that foreign influence narratives would focus on the swing states. This warning was issued in a joint statement published on Monday (Nov. 4) by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Russia, others conducting influence operations As per the joint statement, the Intelligence Community (IC) had been observing foreign adversaries, particularly Russia, conducting additional influence operations intended to undermine public confidence in the integrity of US elections and stoke divisions among Americans. Also read | When will counting of votes begin and when will final results be announced The IC said that it expected these activities to intensify through Election Day on November 5 and in the coming weeks, "and that foreign influence narratives will focus on swing states." 'Russia is the most active threat' Monday's joint statement said that Russia was the most active threat. "Influence actors linked to Russia, in particular, are manufacturing videos and creating fake articles to undermine the legitimacy of the election, instil fear in voters regarding the election process, and suggest Americans are using violence against each other due to political preferences, judging from information available to the IC," the statement said. The statement pointed out that Iran too remained a significant foreign influence threat to the presidential election. Also watch | Newspoint: Trump promises a 'Golden Era' in US × "As noted in a prior update, we have assessed that Iran has conducted malicious cyber activities to compromise former President Trump’s campaign. Iranian influence actors may also seek to create fake media content intended to suppress voting or stoke violence, as they have done in past election cycles," the statement added. 'Seek out information from trusted sources' The CISA recommended voters to seek out information from trusted and official sources, in particular, state and local election officials. The IC encouraged campaigns and election infrastructure stakeholders to report information concerning suspicious or criminal activity to their local Election Crime Coordinators.

South Carolina US Presidential Election 2024: Voting, result info, candidates and all you need to know

Bitcoin speculators are bracing for potentially pronounced market volatility in the aftermath of Election Day in the US on Tuesday according to a detailed report by Bloomberg.

A 30-day gauge of implied swings in the largest digital asset has hit the highest level since a global market rout roiled investors in August. The index, compiled by CF Benchmarks Ltd., is derived from CME Group Bitcoin options pricing, the Bloomberg report elaborated further.

The options market also signals expected moves of about 8 per cent in either direction the day after the vote, compared to typically 2 per cent up or down on a normal day, said Caroline Mauron, co-founder of Orbit Markets, a provider of liquidity for trading in crypto derivatives.

“No significant volatility premium is priced in after November 7, suggesting the market expects a fairly quick resolution,” Mauron added. “This might prove optimistic, considering how close a race the polls are showing.”

Difference between Trump and Kamala’s view on crypto-currencies

The contest between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic rival Vice President Kamala Harris is going down to the wire, leaving investors across asset classes preparing for market upheavals. During campaigning, Trump took an avowedly pro-crypto stance, while Harris, in a measured approach, pledged to back a regulatory framework for digital assets.

Both stances stirred optimism in the crypto community given the contrast with an industry crackdown under President Joe Biden. But Trump’s tight embrace of the sector turned Bitcoin into one of a number of so-called Trump trades.

The former president’s lead over Harris in betting markets helped to lift Bitcoin to the verge of a record high a week ago but his odds have since dropped, pushing the token lower. Polling indicates a photo finish, though there are also some encouraging signs for Harris in last-ditch surveys of voter intentions.

An even distribution of bearish and bullish options for Bitcoin throughout October indicates speculators are equally poised for upward and downward movements leading up to the US vote, according to a report from Derive.xyz, a trading venue focused on crypto derivatives.

For the weeks after the election, data from the Deribit exchange hint at a possible $60,000 to $80,000 trading range based on peak open interest, or outstanding contracts, for bearish and bullish wagers, respectively.

Bitcoin churned near $69,000 as of 9 am Monday in London. The digital asset reached an all-time high of $73,798 in March, aided by inflows into dedicated US exchange-traded funds. The original crypto-currency has rallied more than 60 per cent so far in 2024, outperforming assets like stocks and gold.

Market participants and Bitcoin enthusiasts will take these developments into consideration as it will help them in taking better investment calls.

US election: 'That means you,' Actor Will Ferrell releases off-beat ad in Kamala Harris' support

As China prepares for a pivotal week, the outcome of the US presidential election could significantly shape the scale of its upcoming economic stimulus according to a detailed report by CNBC.

Analysts predict that the details of Beijing's fiscal support will emerge on Friday, coinciding with the conclusion of a five-day meeting of the National People’s Congress, China’s legislative body. Last year’s session resulted in an unprecedented increase in the fiscal deficit, setting the stage for further economic interventions this year, the CNBC report detailed further.

The timing of this meeting is crucial, as it follows the US elections where voters will choose between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic contender Kamala Harris. Polls will close on Tuesday, and the implications of the election results could be profound for China’s economic strategy

Further, according to Ting Lu, chief economist at Nomura, if Trump wins, the fiscal stimulus package could be 10-20 per cent larger compared to a potential Harris victory. He notes, however, that many of China’s economic challenges are rooted domestically, with only a partial influence from US election outcomes.

Trump's threat of tariffs

Trump's threats to impose steep tariffs on Chinese imports, potentially raising them by up to 200 per cent could severely impact China’s export-driven economy, which is already grappling with a sluggish real estate market and weak consumer demand. Conversely, Harris has not indicated a significant shift from the Biden administration's approach, which has included restricting Chinese access to advanced technologies. Such trade tensions would necessitate a stronger reliance on domestic consumption to spur economic growth.

Zhu Bin, chief economist at Nanhua Futures, asserts that a Trump victory would likely lead to larger domestic stimulus measures in China. He also anticipates downward pressure on the yuan if Trump wins, reflecting increased economic uncertainty, the CNBC report detailed further. Political analysts are divided on whether relations with the US would improve under Trump or Harris, with some arguing that a Harris presidency might allow for more predictable policy expectations from China’s perspective.

Despite these dynamics, experts caution against large-scale stimulus due to the ongoing US-China rivalry. Liqian Ren from WisdomTree suggests that while the scale of stimulus may be influenced by market reactions post-election, the Chinese government remains focused on technological advancement, which limits its willingness to launch aggressive economic support measures.

Market volatility in China, which is more pronounced than in the US, could compel the government to act more decisively. Recent fluctuations in the Chinese stock market have tempered gains that were seen in late September, despite President Xi Jinping’s calls for enhanced fiscal and monetary support.

With anticipation building, analysts project that China may consider issuing over 10 trillion yuan in debt over the next few years. While exact numbers remain uncertain, some believe the stimulus could exceed 4 trillion yuan, a figure that reflects the government’s response to past economic crises. Currently, China has set a deficit target of 3 per cent for the year, which could potentially rise beyond 4 per cent.

Local governments, however, face challenges that could hinder stimulus effectiveness, such as stringent tax collection practices that may stifle business activity. This suggests that any stimulus may primarily benefit financial institutions rather than directly supporting consumers.

Analysts indicate that true consumption recovery may rely heavily on support for the real estate sector in the near term, with a more robust consumption stimulus becoming viable only under severe tariff pressures.

Ahead of US Presidential election, celebrity endorsements became a key talking point in the race. Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump attracted high-profile supporters, and the contrast in their celebrity backing highlights the cultural divides within American politics. Kamala Harris garnered the support of a star-studded roster, including pop icons like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga and Bruce Springsteen. Endorsements by these celebrities, who command large social media following and have significant cultural influence, may resonate with younger voters who might play a big role in this election and also those seeking progressive change. Also read: After Lady Gaga, Katy Perry to perform for Kamala Harris on election eve Artists like Swift have personally articulated their endorsement, emphasising leadership qualities and a commitment to social issues, from women's rights to climate action. In stark contrast, Donald Trump is backed by a different set of celebrities, including tech mogul Elon Musk, country-rocker Kid Rock, and wrestling legend Hulk Hogan. While his supporters may not have the same broad appeal in mainstream culture, they are deeply connected to Trump's base, appealing to a demographic that values strong, often provocative personalities. Musk's transition from a Democratic supporter to a vocal advocate for Trump underscores the shifting political landscape, highlighting how celebrity endorsements can also reflect personal and ideological transformations. Watch | Is Donald Trump or Kamala Harris Better for the Economy? × Can celebrity endorsements sway voters? According to recent polls, a minority of Americans report that celebrity endorsements have influenced their political views or decisions. This scepticism indicates that while celebrities can bring attention to issues and energise specific voter blocs, their overall impact on the electorate might be limited. Historically, the Democratic Party has leveraged celebrity power effectively, using it to mobilise support and draw attention to critical issues. However, as seen in the 2016 election with Hillary Clinton, having star power does not guarantee electoral success. Trump's appeal often lies in his ability to connect with voters through his populist rhetoric and strong messaging, which resonates with his supporters regardless of celebrity endorsements. As the election draws closer, both candidates will undoubtedly continue to leverage their celebrity supporters to amplify their messages. For Harris, the backing of cultural icons may help paint a vision of a more inclusive, progressive future. For Trump, the endorsements from figures who represent strength and resilience appeal to his base's desire for a return to perceived American greatness. Ultimately, the influence of these endorsements will be tested at the ballot box. As voters weigh their options, the question remains: will celebrity support translate into votes, or will it be overshadowed by deeper ideological divides? The answer will shape the outcome of this pivotal election.

US Presidential Election Heading For a Close Finish

The Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris will be watching the election night of November 5 from the campus of Howard University, which has been called "one of the most important aspects" of her life by Harris.

Nicknamed "the Black Harvard," the Washington school occupies a central role in the US vice president's biography. Since graduating there in 1986, she has frequently returned at key moments.

In 2019 as a candidate in the Democratic presidential primaries, the vice president said, "It (Howard University) is where I first ran for my first elected office as a student council representative. So this is where it all began."

Harris' presence at the university on Tuesday night, when she could become the first Black woman to be elected US president, is thus deeply symbolic.
