US Elections: Kamala Harris is an Indian-American. But is that enough to become the US president?

During an interview with Tucker Carlson in Arizona on Thursday (October 31), Donald Trump suggested that Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could play “influential roles” in a possible second term as president.

Carlson questioned Trump on rumours that he might appoint Musk and Kennedy. Kennedy had initially launched an independent presidential bid but ended his campaign in August, offering his endorsement to Trump.

Carlson asked, “Do you think Bobby Kennedy and Elon Musk will be influential figures, without specifying what roles they would have in your administration?”

Trump responded, “Yeah, I do.”

Trump also criticised Kamala Harris and referred to Liz Cheney as a “war hawk,” suggesting that she should experience the front lines herself to “see how she feels about it.” Cheney, a former congresswoman, has emerged as one of Trump’s more vocal Republican critics.

During their conversation, Trump criticised Cheney, whose father, former vice-president Dick Cheney, played a major role in the Iraq invasion. “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. Let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are pointed at her.”

Recent polls have indicated that Trump holds a slight lead in Arizona. The interview was framed as a fundraiser for Hurricane Helene relief efforts, a cause fundamental in North Carolina, another battleground state.

The US election on November 5 is a big deal, not only for Americans but also for international students who are paying close attention to how results could change things.

Although neither Donald Trump nor Kamala Harris specifically mentions international students in their campaigns, they do talk a lot about immigration, which could affect the lives and future plans of students from abroad.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme, H-1B

For international students, one major benefit of studying in the US is the chance to stay and work for a while after graduation through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme. OPT allows them to get job experience, which can be a step towards longer-term visas like the H-1B.

But whoever wins the election may change immigration and work visa rules.

Currently, the US limits H-1B visas to 65,000 per year, with an additional 20,000 for US graduate degree holders. For 2024, about 781,000 people applied, but only 24 of them were selected to proceed, reflecting high competition for this visa.

Harris supports increasing skilled worker visas like the H-1B, while Trump’s administration might impose stricter immigration rules, mainly affecting unskilled workers but not as much in the IT sector.

This could mean a mix of outcomes for international students looking to work in the US.

How will Trump's immigration policies affect international students?

Trump’s 2024 campaign message on immigration includes securing borders and reclaiming national sovereignty, which isn’t seen as positive for international students.

In the past, he talked about deporting non-US citizens, seeing them as a burden. However, Trump recently suggested offering automatic green cards to international students who finish college in the US, to encourage them to stay rather than return to countries like India or China, where he says they often become very wealthy.

Trump’s campaign also focuses on opposing “globalism,” and his approach toward China could mean fewer Chinese students enrolling in US schools, which might hurt international student numbers overall.

Right now, Chinese students make up over a quarter of international enrolments in the US.

During Trump’s last term, he enacted a “Travel Ban” affecting mostly Musilm-majority West Asian countries.

His 2024 campaign says he would bring this ban back, though there aren’t clear details on which countries or visa types it would cover. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Trump’s campaign promised to “expand the Travel Ban on entry from terror-plagued places.”

How will Harris' immigration policies affect international students?

The Biden-Harris administration has pushed for expanding legal immigration, including through a failed bipartisan border deal that would have raised limits on employment-based visas. Harris has supported this, though she hasn’t shared much more on her plans for legal immigration, except for a “pathway to citizenship.”

Harris vs Trump on US college protests

The election has also seen candidates respond to recent pro-Gaza protests on over 100 US campuses. Trump and other Republicans are calling for the revocation of visas for foreign students involved in these protests, with Trump’s campaign post stating it would “revoke the student visas of radical anti-American and anti-Semitic foreigners” and deport “pro-Hamas radicals” to make campuses “safe and patriotic.”

Harris has been more reserved on this issue. In a July interview, she recognised the feelings behind the protests, saying, “They are showing exactly what the human emotion should be, as a response to Gaza,” though she did not fully agree with all protest points.

An open letter from the American Council on Education, representing over 1,600 colleges and universities, urged both candidates to support international students. They noted that international students “enrich our campuses and contribute greatly to US innovation and economic growth.”

Officials at the White House altered the official transcript of a call in which outgoing United States (US) President Joe Biden appeared to take a swipe at supporters of Donald Trump, drawing objections from the federal workers who document such remarks for posterity, the news agency Associated Press reported on Thursday (Oct 31) citing sources.

President Biden created an uproar earlier this week with his remarks to Latino activists responding to racist comments at a Trump rally made by the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who referred to the US island territory of Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.”

Biden, according to a transcript prepared by the official White House stenographers, told the Latino group on a Tuesday evening video call, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters — his — his demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.”

The missing apostrophe that led to the uproar

According to the Associated Press report, the transcript released by the White House office, however, rendered the quote with an apostrophe, reading “supporter’s” rather than “supporters,” which aides said pointed to Biden criticising Hinchcliffe, not the millions of Americans who were supporting Trump for president.

The change was made after the press office “conferred with the president,” according to an internal email from the head of the stenographers’ office that was obtained by the news agency.

The supervisor, in the email, called the press office’s handling of the matter “a breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices.”

The supervisor said that if there was a difference in "interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently."

“Our Stenography Office transcript — released to our distro, which includes the National Archives — is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff,” the supervisor added.

The edit of the transcript came as the White House scrambled to respond to a wave of queries from reporters about Biden’s comments. Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris distanced herself from Biden’s comments.

'We are not garbage'

Supporters of Donald Trump rejected the remarks made by Biden. "We're not garbage, we're not trash. We're the American people," said Heather Johnson outside a Trump rally venue in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Another Trump supporter Chad Solomon said, "I believe everything that basically Biden says is garbage himself, as well as Kamala Harris, and I mean that with a straight face. The supervisor, in the email, called the press office’s handling of the matter “a breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices.” The supervisor said that if there was a difference in "interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently." “Our Stenography Office transcript — released to our distro, which includes the National Archives — is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff,” the supervisor added. The edit of the transcript came as the White House scrambled to respond to a wave of queries from reporters about Biden’s comments. Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris distanced herself from Biden’s comments. 'We are not garbage' Supporters of Donald Trump rejected the remarks made by Biden. "We're not garbage, we're not trash. We're the American people," said Heather Johnson outside a Trump rally venue in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Don't know what this campaign feels it has to go so negative against an entire population at this point even the polls say that's half of America," Johnson told the news agency Reuters. Another Trump supporter Chad Solomon said, "I believe everything that basically Biden says is garbage himself, as well as Kamala Harris, and I mean that with a straight face. I mean what he's trying to implement the past four years was inflation, the border crisis, foreign affairs is a mess. and it's been ridiculous." (With inputs from agencies)

Vice President Kamala Harris has criticized former President Donald Trump’s recent comments about protecting women "whether they like it or not," labeling them as highly offensive. Harris emphasized that true support for women should be rooted in respect for their autonomy and choices, arguing that such statements undermine the very principles of empowerment and equality.

NBA king LeBron James throws weight behind Kamala Harris as US presidential election approaches

The US is all set for its next presidential election on November 5. And there's a great anxiety among voters and the rest of the world regarding who will win.

But there is another important question, what will Trump's supporters do if Kamala Harris wins this race for the White House?

The Republican nominee has said, multiple times, that the only way he can lose this election is by fraud by the Democrats.

The former president is prepared to question Harris' victory in the polls (If she wins).

While Trump's supporters are planning to overturn Harris' potential victory saying they are certain that "if this election will be fair," nobody can stop Trump from reentering the White House.

"Make America Great Again" (MAGA), a slogan of Trump's election campaign and a political movement in his support, is ready with ways to undermine a potential victory for the vice president.

"January 6 will be pretty fun," the MAGA activists said while talking to CNN, indicating that if (by any chance) Harris wins this election, there will be violence on January 6, 2025.

The MAGA world, not general followers of Trump but also influential names, is laying a "step-by-step" plan and preparing its followers for a "stolen election."

The movement includes Ivan Raiklin, who played the most significant part in Trump calling the 2020 US presidential election "cheating and fraud." Rocklin, who calls himself "Trump's Secretary of Retribution," recently said that he had prepared a "target list" of more than 350 people he will go after in Donald Trump's second term in the White House.

The MAGA world's mission to overturn Harris' potential win also included Michael Flynn, the former president's national security advisor.

Flynn, earlier this year, acknowledged that there was no evidence to support a key part of some election fraud claims of 2020. But, just a month later, he changed his statement saying the 2020 election was certainly "filled with fraud."

US Election 2024: Donald Trump Hits Back at President Joe Biden's 'Garbage' Comment

US popular podcaster Joe Rogan has said he is open to sitting down with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in his Texas studio, stressing, “I’ll do it at midnight if she’s up.”

Rogan Wednesday (Oct 30) also defended his earlier decision to reject Harris interview citing the demands that she put for the podcast to be recorded: Limiting the record time to 1 hour and record it outside his studio.

Criticising Harris for “being a diva,” Rogan said on his “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast: “She had an opportunity to come. You could look at this and you can say, ‘Oh, you’re being a diva,’ but she had an opportunity to come here when she was in Texas — and I literally gave them an open invitation.”

“I said anytime. I said if she’s done at 10, we’ll come back here at 10. I go, I’ll do it at 9 in the morning, I’ll do it at 10 p.m. I’ll do it at midnight if she’s up, if she wants to, you know, drink a Red Bull,” he added.

US popular podcaster Joe Rogan has said he is open to sitting down with Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in his Texas studio, stressing, “I’ll do it at midnight if she’s up.” Rogan Wednesday (Oct 30) also defended his earlier decision to reject Harris interview citing the demands that she put for the podcast to be recorded: Limiting the record time to 1 hour and record it outside his studio. Criticising Harris for “being a diva,” Rogan said on his “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast: “She had an opportunity to come. You could look at this and you can say, ‘Oh, you’re being a diva,’ but she had an opportunity to come here when she was in Texas — and I literally gave them an open invitation.” “I said anytime. I said if she’s done at 10, we’ll come back here at 10. I go, I’ll do it at 9 in the morning, I’ll do it at 10 p.m. I’ll do it at midnight if she’s up, if she wants to, you know, drink a Red Bull,” he added.
But Suter told AFP that a broad interpretation could apply that to "anything used to produce an abortion -- materials for surgical abortions -- which could effectively create a national ban."

This could disrupt the supply chain in clinics and hospitals across states where abortion is currently legal -- or where it may soon be permitted through state-level referendums on November 5.

Conservative lawyer and scholar Josh Craddock told AFP: "There is nothing nefarious or 'backdoor' about enforcing the laws that Congress has enacted and repeatedly reaffirmed. "

Judicial appointments and more

A Trump administration could also seek to undo the stringent patient privacy protections put in place by Biden for women seeking abortions out-of-state, said Suter, paving the way for possible prosecutions when they return home.

Although the Supreme Court's conservative majority has already overturned Roe v Wade, experts say the power to appoint federal judges remains paramount.

Courts may soon be called to decide the fate of state laws that make it harder for women to access care in more abortion-friendly states, Grossman explained.

Harris vs Trump: Hedge fund titan says US elections 2024 a ‘coin toss’ race whose winner is...

Immigration remains an important and contentious topic in the 2024 US election. Former president Donald Trump has adopted a firm stance, aiming to deport large numbers of immigrants and refugees, whereas Vice President Kamala Harris has indicated she would uphold the Biden administration’s policies with her own adjustments.

How will President Trump affect immigration policies?

Throughout the campaign and debates, Trump has repeatedly accused Harris of supporting “open borders.” He has also wrongly claimed that immigrants are responsible for a rise in crime. His argument that immigration is “out of control” has become a main point in his campaign. One of his biggest promises is to deport millions of undocumented immigrants if he wins.

Additionally, the 78-year-old Trump has proposed ending birthright citizenship for children born to immigrants residing illegally in the US, a move that has raised concerns within various immigrant communities, including those from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.

Many pro-immigration groups have criticised Trump’s stance, especially his push to end birthright citizenship. They argue that this right is protected by the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.

At a recent rally, Trump accused Harris, 60, of allowing "migrant gangs and illegal alien criminals" into the country, calling her approach to immigration “a crime against our country.”

How will immigration policies change under Kamala Harris?

On the other side, Vice President Harris, running as the Democratic candidate, has talked about reducing illegal immigration and described the current system as “broken.” She believes it needs new laws to make it work better. Rather than focusing on harsh policies, Harris says she wants to improve border security and help people seeking asylum with fair processing. She claims this will address what she calls a "broken immigration system."

Harris has also argued that Trump’s focus on punishment and conflict is a distraction from important issues like the economy and healthcare. She believes a more compassionate approach would serve the country better.

The election outcome is expected to have significant implications for US immigration policy. If Trump wins, the policies will probably get tougher, while a Harris administration would aim to introduce reforms balancing security concerns with humanitarian priorities.
