Big shoes to fill?

Kamala’s connection with her mother is known, but her relationship with her father, Donald Jasper Harris, has often come under attack by those on the other side of the political spectrum.

No matter the case, the accomplishments of Shyamala Gopalan have been extraordinary, not just because she may have raised the next President of the United States, but also as a highly successful individual.

US Elections: Not just Kamala Harris’s mother; Shyamala Gopalan was a trailblazer

Shares of Trump Media, the company behind the social media platform Truth Social, skyrocketed over 21 per cent on October 28, spurred by Donald Trump’s campaign rally in New York City.

According to a report by CNBC, the stock closed at $47.36 per share, surpassing its mid-July peak, which was fuelled by the heightened attention following a near-assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. This earlier surge was followed by a significant sell-off, which saw the stock plummet to below $12 by late September.

However, the company made a remarkable recovery throughout October, coinciding with the intensifying presidential race against Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, who owns nearly 57 per cent of Trump Media, saw the value of his stake rise to about $5.4 billion at Monday’s intraday high, reflecting an increase of around $4 billion since the stock’s September lows.

Despite these fluctuations, analysts have often pointed out that Trump Media’s market value and volatile stock performance are not primarily driven by company news or the platform's modest revenue and audience size. Instead, they suggest that the stock serves as a vehicle for pro-Trump retail investors to express their support for the former president and as a barometer for his chances of regaining the White House.

The recent surge in stock price appears to correlate with a renewed sense of enthusiasm among supporters after Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden, which attracted thousands of attendees in a predominantly Democratic city. A user on Truth Social celebrated the rally, noting, “Our dear President @realDonaldTrump packs MSG yesterday for the Rally of a lifetime and TODAY, the entire market is UP UP UP!!! $DJT.”

Traditional polling indicates a close race

This spike in stock value aligns with a shift in political betting markets, where Trump’s odds appear to be improving, even as traditional polling indicates a close race. Betting platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi use different methodologies than conventional polls, raising questions about their reliability as indicators of political outcomes.

Recent concerns have emerged about potential manipulation in the election betting markets. For instance, Polymarket reported that a single individual from France amassed a significant pro-Trump position on its presidential election bets through four separate accounts.

As the election approaches, the dynamics of Trump Media’s stock, its investor base, and the broader political landscape remain linked, reflecting the fervor surrounding Trump’s campaign. Still, with a close race, it is just a matter of few more days before the US has a new President.

US Election 2024: Voting Ballots Set On Fire As Election Day Approaches

Donald Trump has issued a warning that religion is "under threat" in the United States, highlighting concerns about growing secularism and attacks on religious freedoms. His remarks reflect a broader narrative among some conservatives about the challenges facing faith-based communities in the current socio-political climate.

US Elections 2024: Donald Trump Warns Religion Is 'Under Threat' In The US

However polarised the United States presidential elections may have become, one thing that remains common across the aisles is the profound visibility of people with roots here in India.

Be it Usha Vance, the wife of the running mate of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump; be it Vivek Ramaswamy, whom Trump has promised a seat in his administration; and be it Kamala Harris herself, the Democratic candidate—all of them are Indian-Americans.

Usha’s deep influence on JD Vance

When JD Vance’s name was declared as Trump’s running mate, reports about his wife soon took over the internet. It was also revealed how Usha’s Hindu faith had helped Vance navigate his own spiritual and professional journey.

JD Vance, in his bestselling 2016 memoir Hillbilly Elegy, writes how he is deeply influenced by his wife.

"She instinctively understood the questions I didn't even know to ask, and she always encouraged me to seek opportunities that I didn't know existed."

Usha was born in 1986 to Hindu parents who migrated from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

In a 2020 interview, JD Vance even said, “I'm one of those guys who really benefits from having sort of a powerful female voice over his left shoulder saying, 'Don't do that … do that.'"

Indian roots of Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris, who is hoping to become the first-ever female president of the US, is herself of Indian origin.

Her ancestral village in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu erupted in joy in 2020 for the first time when she became the vice president of the US. Kamala Harris’ mother Shyamala Gopalan moved to the US to pursue graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Then, Shyamala happened to marry Donald Harris, Kamala’s father.

Vivek Ramaswamy

Then there is the Indian-origin ‘outsider’ who has left an impression on voters on both sides of the aisle: Vivek Ramaswamy.

Indian voters

The India connection to US elections is deepened by the presence of a large Indian diaspora on American soil, wielding significant influence in some counties.

Indians are known for participating in the voting exercise in large numbers. In 2020, the turnout of Indian voters was 71 per cent, the biggest among Asian communities.

Indian Americans are the second-largest immigrant group in the US now, with over 5.2 million people of Indian origin residing in the US.

How to avoid long lines on poll day?

Early voting has made the election process easier by helping voters avoid these long queues and also giving more flexibility to those who might not be able to make it to the polling station on election day.

However, early voting also works differently for different states. Casey Burgat, director of the Legislative Affairs Program at George Washington University said, “We just say ‘early’ as this catch-all term, but sometimes it's months in advance, sometimes it's a few weeks, and then [there are] even the differences in [state] processes.”

In terms of precautionary measures, voters should keep in mind that there will be lines at certain times at early voting sites and election day polling stations. For that, they should come in comfortable shoes, bring a chair if you have difficulty standing, and also pack water to keep yourself hydrated while standing in the lines.

With a compelling track record of predicting the economy, Christophe Barraud has taken an interest in the upcoming 2024 US presidential elections. The top economist said in an interview that growth is expected to pick up pace after the election results are out. This is because companies will be able to make bigger decisions once they are certain about the changes likely to happen in the economy, leading to an increase in GDP of the country.

What Christophe Barraud predicts for US 2024 elections

Ranked as number one economist by Bloomberg, Barraud has forecast three possible outcomes of the US elections, according to Business Insider.

In the first scenario, if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the upcoming elections with a split in Congress, not much will change for the US economy. In this case, Barraud predicts things will remain the same.

In the second scenario, former president Donald Trump wins but Congress is divided, Trump will not be able to easily cut taxes for businesses and households. This will lead him to focus on foreign policies that will likely result in trade restrictions and tariffs being implemented. Outcome of this will not affect the US economy in the short term. However, it may affect the global economy, and may prove harmful for the US in the long run, according to Business Insider.

Barraud’s third and most likely scenario is predicted to be Trump wins with a Republican majority. In this case, Trump might cut taxes for companies and households and will likely focus more on domestic policies. This may leave a positive impact on the US economy in the short term, with an expected rise of 2.1 to 2.3 per cent in 2025.

However, Barraud highlights a concern that in case Trump is elected and implements tax cuts, it may result in revenue shortfalls. The 10-year Treasury bond may rise to at least 4.5 per cent from the current 4.23 per cent. If Trump doesn’t get a majority in Congress, the bond could increase to 4.35 per cent, while if he wins by majority, the bond may go as high as 5 per cent. This will happen as investors may seek a higher risk premium, especially if Trump toughens the immigration policy in a healthy job market that will result in more inflation.

Early voting is underway in several States across the US. New York City's strong early voting turnout is part of a broader National pattern as millions of Americans cast their ballots ahead of election day. WION's Susan Tehrani brings you this ground report from New York City!

US Elections 2024: New York City Records Strong Early Voter Turnout

US intelligence agencies have identified domestic extremists, driven by conspiracy theories about election fraud, as the most significant threat of violence leading up to and following the 2024 election.

Who's at risk?

An internal Joint Intelligence Bulletin from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), obtained by NBC News, warns that these extremists pose a credible threat and that they seek to terrorise law enforcement and disrupt voting.

It stipulates that extremists can target individuals, such as candidates, election officials, judges, and members of the media. Key locations at risk, as per the bulletin, include polling sites, ballot drop boxes, and political gatherings.

According to the report, perceptions of election fraud are a "prominent narrative" for extremists targeting officials. Other motivations for them include immigration, LGBTQ issues, abortion and failed assassination attempts on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Former President Trump continues to allege that a rigged system was the driving force behind his 2020 election loss, a claim echoed by his hard-right supporters. This claim became the reason behind the tragic Capitol Hill riot of Jan 2021.

Intelligence suggests that, since January 6, at least three attacks and two interrupted plots have stemmed from these baseless fraud claims.

After the January 6, 2021 riots, there has been a significant shift in intelligence dissemination practices. Before that, Federal agents regularly provided such threat assessments to state and local law enforcement agencies but were cautious about sharing such bulletins to avoid appearing to infringe on free speech.

The October internal report is one of several obtained via public records requests by Property of the People, a non-profit focused on government transparency.

US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Mayra Rodriguez, in a statement, said, "The United States remains in a heightened, dynamic threat environment, and we continue to share information with our law enforcement partners about the threats posed by domestic violent extremists in the context of the 2024 election".

She emphasised that "Violence has no place in our politics, and DHS continues to work with our partners to evaluate and mitigate emerging threats that may arise from domestic or foreign actors".

As per NBC news, election workers across the US are responding to the rise in threats with increased security measures, particularly in areas marked by election disputes, such as Maricopa County, Arizona. Heightened security measures for election day (Nov 5) include metal detectors, armed guards, drones, and police snipers.

Bitcoin briefly climbed above $70,000 as investors braced themselves for MicroStrategy earnings and counted the days to the US presidential election according to a detailed report by CNBC.

The CNBC report further explained that, the price of bitcoin was last higher by about 3 per cent at $69,925.00, according to Coin Metrics. Further, at about 6:00 p.m. Eastern on October 28, it touched $70,207.02 and has been oscillating since.

Stocks tied to the price of the cryptocurrency were little changed in extended trading. In regular trading on October 28, crypto exchange platform Coinbase rallied by 5 per cent and bitcoin proxy MicroStrategy soared by nearly 9 per cent.

The last time bitcoin touched $70,000 was in June of this year. It has tested that level several times this year, after hitting a record of $73,797.68 in March. Earlier forays above $70,000 have been limited to mere blips.

Republican nominee and former president Donald Trump has been courting the crypto industry this year and presented himself as the pro-crypto candidate. Whereas democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris have been more muted on crypto, and the industry is split on how her potential presidency could affect crypto companies.

The outcome is widely viewed as a key catalyst for future price action in the bitcoin, but investors have watching and waiting as the election approaches. Last week, bitcoin surged toward $70,000, but it ultimately fell short of the threshold.

Investors are also watching for earnings from Coinbase and MicroStrategy, both slated for October 30. On October 28, MicroStrategy, which trades as a high-beta play on the price of bitcoin, registered its highest close since March 15, 2000. MicroStrategy is looking to extend its seven-week win streak, its longest since rally since an 11-week streak that ended in late October 2010.

Market participants and investors are going to closely watch these developments in bitcoin and take informed investment decisions based on the outcome of the US elections.

Democratic candidate Kamala Harris narrowly leads Republican rival Donald Trump in the US presidential race, according to the latest opinion poll by statistical website FiveThirtyEight, just days ahead of Election Day.

The data from its daily election poll tracker also reveals that the US vice president's razor-thin edge has slightly decreased over the past two months, while Trump has secured a 0.9 percentage-point gain since October 1.

However, after factoring in the Electoral College outcome, the US pollster says its model shows Trump has a 54 out of 100 chance of winning the election, while Harris has a 46 out of 100 chance.

According to the poll analysis site, the contest will boil down to the seven swing states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — which account for 90 electoral votes.

FiveThirtyEight credits its forecast to a combination of polls and campaign "fundamentals" such as economic conditions, state partisanship and incumbency, as per its website.

What is FiveThirtyEight?

Founded by Nate Silver in 2007, the website derives its name from the total number of electors in the United States Electoral College. Initially, it was licensed to The New York Times.

The company was acquired by ESPN in 2013, which retained Silver as its editor-in-chief and a contributor for the sports publication owned by Disney. Five years later, in 2018, its operations were transferred to ABC News, also under the parent The Walt Disney Company.

In 2023, Nate Silver parted ways with ABC — in the wake of the lay-offs at Disney — FiveThirtyEight to set up his own website, Silver Bulletin, while retaining the rights to his forecasting model.

What is its history of predictions?

In 2008, the pollster had predicted a decisive win for Barack Obama, projecting that the Democratic candidate would win 349 electoral college votes while his Republican challenger, John McCain, would secure 189.

Obama went on to win 365 electoral votes and 52.9 per cent of the popular votes.

In 2012, the site also predicted Obama's re-election with more than a 90 per cent chance.

However, in 2016, Nate Silver faced criticism as his prediction model gave Donald Trump a mere 29 per cent chance of winning. Trump went on to win his first shot at the presidency, becoming the 45th POTUS.

The website adopted a more nuanced approach in 2020, forecasting Joe Biden's victory but calling it a 'fine line between a landslide and nail-biter'. When the results trickled in, Joe Biden won 306 electoral votes against Donald Trump's 232.

Can it get it right this time?

The data from its daily election poll tracker also reveals that the US vice president's razor-thin edge has slightly decreased over the past two months, while Trump has secured a 0.9 percentage-point gain since October 1. However, after factoring in the Electoral College outcome, the US pollster says its model shows Trump has a 54 out of 100 chance of winning the election, while Harris has a 46 out of 100 chance. Also read | Puerto Rican archbishop demands personal apology from Trump over 'floating island of garbage' rally remark According to the poll analysis site, the contest will boil down to the seven swing states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — which account for 90 electoral votes. Also read | US Elections 2024: Explosive devices put ballot drop boxes on fire, destroy hundreds of votes In 2023, Nate Silver parted ways with ABC — in the wake of the lay-offs at Disney — FiveThirtyEight to set up his own website, Silver Bulletin, while retaining the rights to his forecasting model.

Chinese hackers allegedly intercept calls, texts of Trump, Harris campaigns ahead of 2024 US election

As the U.S. presidential elections approach, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making their final appeals to voters. Trump emphasizes his previous administration's achievements and promises to restore economic growth, while Harris focuses on advancing social justice and economic equity. Both candidates are ramping up their campaigns to galvanize support and secure crucial votes in key battleground states.

U.S. Elections: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump Deliver Final Appeals To Voters

The United States is gearing up for the big Election Day — Nov 5. As the nation readies to elect its next president, early voting has already begun in many of the 50 US states. The election race between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris is tighter than ever.

Those voting for the first time may be wondering if they need to bring an ID to vote. Here's your answer.

In more than 20 states, voters require a government-issued photo ID—like a driving licence or passport—for casting a ballot. This includes Georgia, Indiana, and Texas, which have very strict rules. Those without a valid ID may have to vote with a provisional ballot, which will only be counted if they present an ID within a set timeframe after the election.

Other states, such as Ohio and Arizona, allow a range of ID options, from utility bills to bank statements. Here, a photo ID isn't necessarily required.

Voters without any form of ID can often sign an affidavit or have an election official confirm their identity to vote as usual.

Simply put, the Electoral College is a group of electors chosen to represent the election choices of each American state.

Based on population data derived from the Census, each state is allocated a specific number of electoral college votes that adds up to 538 (see list below).

Why was the Electoral College established in the US?

The Electoral College system was established in view of the possibility that, considering the different population sizes of each state, the popular vote could be skewed in favour of one winner.

For instance, whoever wins California could take the White House, as it has the largest population. This would not be a proportionate mandate that takes into account the wishes of the people of all states.

In order to solve this, the Founding Fathers of the US introduced the Electoral College as a compromise between congressional selection and direct popular vote.

The Electoral College consists of 538 votes. Whoever gets a total of 270 or more electoral college votes wins the election.

The electors' numbers in each state are proportionate to how many members of Congress it sends. One electoral college vote is equal to one house seat plus two senate seats.

The District of Columbia, which is not a state, has three electors. This exemption was given under the 23rd Amendment of the Constitution, which treats the District of Columbia as a state for electoral college purposes.

How are Electoral College electors chosen?

In the general elections, voters are actually choosing their preferred electors rather than directly voting for the presidential candidates.

In most states, the 'winner-takes-all' system is used, meaning all electoral votes for these states go to the candidate who has won the popular vote there.

The states of Maine and Nebraska, however, use a proportionate method.

How electoral votes are recorded and announced

Once the general election is over on 5th November, the state officials will prepare a Certificate of Ascertainment listing the electors and their votes, which is sent to the National Archives and Records Administration or NARA.

These electors will meet on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday in December to cast their votes for president and vice president.

Their votes are then recorded and sent to Congress, which counts them on January 6 at a joint session presided over by the incumbent vice president.

The announcement of the electoral college by the Congress will follow.

This is the formal declaration of the president-elect and vice president-elect, ending the US presidential election process.

The new president will the oath of office on January 20.

The Electoral College in numbers: States and votes

As already mentioned, there are a total of 538 electoral votes, and the majority mark, or the magic number, is 270.

Below are the electoral college votes of each state, and District of Columbia

The rally was held at New York’s Madison Square Garden where stand-up comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made lewd and racist comments about Latinos, Jews and Black people. He said, “I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

The comedian’s joke was immediately called out and social media took offence to it with many showing their support for Donald Trump’s competitor, Kamala Harris in the upcoming US presidential election.

Model Amber Rose is calling out Beyonce! A day after the Grammy-winner singer endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris at her campaign rally in her hometown of Houston, Rose came forward, claiming that the singer had copied the speech that she had given during her appearance at the Republican National Convention in July.

The new controversy started after Rose dropped a comment on an Instagram post in which she slammed the Destiny's Child alum for stealing her speech.

A few clips of Beyonce's speech were shared on the Instagram handle The Shade Room. Reacting to the post, Amber commented, ''She wanna be me so bad. Took my whole speech.''

Beyonce and Amber's speeches do not have exact similarities, but they do address the same topics, such as motherhood. In July, Amber introduced herself as a mother, and on Friday, Beyonce said that she's speaking not as a celebrity but as a mother and what's better for her children.

At Harris's rally, Beyonce said, “I’m not here as a celebrity; I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother.”

“A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided,” the singer said.

In July, the 41-year-old model endorsed Donald Trump. In her speech during the Republican National Convention, she said, ''My whole world revolves around providing for my children, keeping them safe, and giving them an opportunity for a better life.”

“That’s something that unites all American parents, whether we’re Republicans, Democrats, Conservatives, or Liberals — we all want a better country for our children.”

Took my whole speech.'' Beyonce and Amber's speeches do not have exact similarities, but they do address the same topics, such as motherhood. In July, Amber introduced herself as a mother, and on Friday, Beyonce said that she's speaking not as a celebrity but as a mother and what's better for her children. At Harris's rally, Beyonce said, “I’m not here as a celebrity; I’m not here as a politician. I’m here as a mother.” “A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we’re not divided,” the singer said. In July, the 41-year-old model endorsed Donald Trump. In her speech during the Republican National Convention, she said, ''My whole world revolves around providing for my children, keeping them safe, and giving them an opportunity for a better life.” “That’s something that unites all American parents, whether we’re Republicans, Democrats, Conservatives, or Liberals — we all want a better country for our children.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Shade Room (@theshaderoom) × “But I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, that the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump, President of the United States,” she said back then. United States (US) Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris appeared briefly rattled after she was heckled during her election rally in Michigan on Saturday (Oct 26).

United States (US) Vice President and current Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris appeared briefly rattled after she was heckled during her election rally in Michigan on Saturday (Oct 26). A report by the New York Post on Sunday said that Harris had begun speaking after former first lady Michelle Obama's address at the rally in Kalamazoo. “We are fighting for America’s future, and we understand the opportunity we have before us to turn the page on the fear," Harris told supporters when she got cut off. 'No more Gaza war!' At the rally, an anti-Israel protester interrupted Harris' address by repeatedly saying, "No more Gaza war!" Harris stopped her speech as the protester shouted her down — and then looked behind her as rally-goers erupted into a shower of boos against the heckler, the report said. Here's a look a the video: YIKES. Kamala SHOOK by protester. Look at the panic. This is now happening at every rally pic.twitter.com/uxclTaoKb0 — Benny Johnson (@bennyjohnson) October 27, 2024 × Her supporters began countering the heckler with chants of "Kamala". “‘On the topic of Gaza, we must end that war,” Harris replied after a brief pause during the commotion. Harris' rally in Kalamazoo came hours before Israel launched multiple strikes at Iran in retaliation for the Islamic Republic's October 1 missile attack. Democrats concerned about political ramifications of Gaza war in Michigan The New York Post report said that Michigan has one of the largest Arab-American populations in the US and Democratic operatives have long been anxious about the political ramifications of the Gaza war on the November 5 election there. A recent poll showed that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has a razor-thin 0.2 percentage point edge in Michigan. Recently, Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, a Democrat, confirmed that he won’t back either candidate in the election. (With inputs from agencies)

In a recent three-hour interview on Joe Rogan’s influential podcast, former US President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial proposal to eliminate income taxes in favour of tariffs as detailed in a report by CNBC. When Rogan directly questioned him about the feasibility of such a plan, Trump replied, “Yeah, sure, but why not?”

Trump emphasised that his administration would prioritize protecting American jobs and industries, stating, “We will not allow the enemy to come in and take our jobs... unless they pay a big price. And the big price is tariffs.” This approach forms a core element of Trump’s economic strategy as he campaigns for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Possibility of a $2 trillion loss over a decade

Among his proposed tax reforms, Trump suggests removing income taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits, along with reinstating his 2017 tax cuts, which are set to expire in 2025. He has also mentioned potential income tax exemptions for specific groups, including fire-fighters, police officers, military personnel, and veterans. However, estimates indicate that eliminating income taxes on these categories could result in a staggering $2 trillion loss over a decade, according to the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank.

The proposal is a 20% tariff on imports

To counterbalance these projected losses, Trump proposes implementing a 20 per cent tariff on imports from all countries, with higher rates specifically for Chinese goods. Nonetheless, economic analysts expressed doubts about the viability of this strategy. Garrett Watson, a senior policy analyst at the Tax Foundation, pointed out that even the most aggressive tariff increases would not generate sufficient revenue to compensate for the substantial income tax losses. He noted that while tariffs might bring in approximately $3.8 trillion over ten years, individual income taxes are expected to yield around $33 trillion in the same timeframe.

The broader implication of Trump’s tax plan, which includes these tariffs, could lead to an expansion of the federal deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade, according to Watson. Additionally, the burden of tariffs would primarily fall on the US importers, potentially driving up production costs and consumer prices, an issue particularly concerning as inflation appears to be stabilising now due to the policies of the US Federal Reserve.

Vice President Kamala Harris has criticised Trump’s approach, characterizing it as a “sales tax on the American people” and arguing that it disproportionately affects low-income individuals. In response to these accusations, Trump defended his proposal on social media, claiming that tariffs are “paid for by the abusing country.” However, critics have pointed out that such taxes ultimately burden US consumers.

As Trump continues to advocate for his tariff-centric tax overhaul, the debate over its economic implications intensifies, with analysts and opponents urging caution about its potential impact on middle-class Americans.

American daily newspaper The Los Angeles Times would not be endorsing Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris for the November 5 presidential election in the United States (US). According to reports on Sunday (Oct 27), LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong had vetoed the planned endorsement, informing board members through an intermediary that the newspaper would not make a recommendation in the presidential race between Harris and Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump. Also read | Chinese hackers allegedly intercept calls, texts of Trump, Harris campaigns ahead of 2024 US election Following the decision, thousands of LA Times readers cancelled their subscriptions to the newspaper, and three members of the editorial board resigned, a report by The New York Times (NYT) said. What was the motivation for the decision? Patrick's daughter Nika revealed the reason why the newspaper refused to endorse Harris. Nika, 31, said the decision was motivated by Kamala Harris' continued support for Israel amid the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Nika is a far-left political activist who displays a Palestinian flag on her profile on the social media platform X. In a series of posts on X, Nika said last Friday (Oct 25), "There is a lot of controversy and confusion over the LAT’s decision not to endorse a presidential candidate. I trust the Editorial Board’s judgment. For me, genocide is the line in the sand." As Mandela said: “The temptation is to speak in muffled tones about the rights of the people of Palestine. Having achieved our own freedom, we can fall into the trap of washing our hands of difficulties that others face. Yet we would be less than human if we did so.” pic.twitter.com/SdAAFpI2io — Nika Soon-Shiong 🇵🇸 (@nikasoonshiong) October 25, 2024 × "The temptation is to speak in muffled tones about an issue the international courts have called a plausible genocide. But this moment requires opposition to crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, and Apartheid – as my parents did in South Africa," she added. A report by the Daily Mail on Sunday said that Nika has no formal role at the newspaper, and has been previously accused of having undue influence at the organisation. 'This is not a vote for Donald Trump' Nika also said in her series of posts on X that the LA Times' decision not to endorse Harris did not mean that the newspaper was backing Trump. Also watch | Race to Power US: Trump, Harris make final push for victory × "This is not a vote for Donald Trump. This is a refusal to ENDORSE a candidate that is overseeing a war on children. Following her posts on the social media platform, her father Patrick told the NYT that his family made the joint decision not to endorse a presidential candidate. (With inputs from agencies)

The Washington Post, on Saturday (Oct 16) reported that during a brief period in the 1990s, South African-born billionaire Musk worked illegally in the US while building his startup company Zip2.

It further highlighted concerns from investors at Zip2 about Musk's immigration status, noting that he was under pressure to secure a work visa. Citing two immigration law experts, the report noted that, to maintain valid work authorisation as a student, Musk would have needed to be enrolled in a full course of study. Instead, he allegedly focused on his startup, Zip2, which he sold in 1999 for around $300 million.

Musk himself previously acknowledged on a podcast, back in 2020: "I was legally there, but I was meant to be doing student work. I was allowed to do work sort of supporting whatever."

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump are currently in a nail-biting race as the election day in the United States nears. However, the Democrats have reportedly been expressing fear about Harris' victory, whereas Republicans feel confident about Trump.

Trump-Harris in a nail biting race; Democrats panicking for no reason, say pollsters

With the US presidential election heading into the home stretch, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will likely be hoping for Donald Trump to return to the White House.

Trump's last time in office was good for Netanyahu, and in the lead-up to the November 5 vote, the former president has sent mixed messages on his Middle East policy.

His remarks have ranged from encouraging Netanyahu to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities -- which Israel refrained from in its strikes Saturday -- to criticising the Israeli leader, saying "the October 7 attack would never have happened if I was president" and that he will pressure Israel to end the wars.

Yet it is these unclear policies, combined with Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan, that analysts say Netanyahu is hoping for.

An isolationist, Trump as a Republican president might give Netanyahu more freedom to navigate the conflicts that continue to rage in Gaza and Lebanon.

"One of Netanyahu's milestones is the US election. He is praying for a Trump victory, which he thinks will give him a lot of freedom of movement, which will let him do what he aspires," Gidon Rahat, political science professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, told AFP.

Aviv Bushinsky, a political commentator and Netanyahu's former chief of staff, similarly said: "His experience with Republicans is very good... unlike with the Democrats who are much tougher on him."

In 17 years as prime minister, Netanyahu has only served opposite one Republican leader, Trump.

During his presidency, Trump went ahead with several moves that boosted Netanyahu's domestic standing while upending some long-standing US policies on Israel, its conflict with the Palestinians and the wider region.

The Republican president moved the US embassy to Jerusalem, which Israel claims as its undivided capital, recognised Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights, and oversaw the normalisation of ties between three Arab states and Israel.

Trump also withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal with Israel's arch-foe Iran and reimposed tough economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

President Joe Biden, meanwhile, has long had a frosty relationship with Netanyahu despite insisting on his "ironclad support" for Israel.

Unlike Trump, Biden had warned Netanyahu against striking Iran's oil production and nuclear facilities.

Trump and Netanyahu also enjoy a close personal relationship, with the former US president boasting this week of having had frequent phone calls with the Israeli premier.

"We have a very good relationship," Trump said at a rally in Georgia. "We're going to work with them very closely."

Those positives will outweigh any concerns, said Bushinsky.

"I think Netanyahu would be willing to take the risk of Trump's unpredictability," he said.
