More than two decades after destroying the Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the Taliban has now started construction work nearby the cliff, where the two giant statues once stood, to develop a tourism complex.

The terror outfit masquerading as the government of Afghanistan is looking to 'rebuild' a historic bazaar that was destroyed in 1990 when the civil war was at its peak in the country. Reportedly, the tourist complex will house guesthouses, restaurants, public toilets, parking as well as grocery and handicraft shops.

While the Taliban attempts to embrace modernity by building a new complex, some experts believe that the ruined bazaar itself is a historic site. Moreover, the bazaar could be sitting atop other ancient relics buried underneath it. Thus, by building new infrastructure, the Taliban may be doing a lot more damage to the site.

It is being reported that United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO, which has been working extensively at the Bamiyan site for decades hasn't been consulted for the project. The UN agency said in a statement:

The annual Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit is taking place in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, with the participation of regional foreign ministers. Eight countries make up the alliance, including Russia, China, India, Pakistan, and Central Asian countries. It strives to advance political, commercial, and economic co-operation while upholding regional security and stability.

During the summit, WION conducted an exclusive interview with Afghanistan's Taliban government's foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. Below are the significant portions of that interview.

WION: It's been almost a year since the Taliban took power; what challenges does your government now face?

Amir Khan Muttaqi: We have dealt with many challenges over the years, and most of them have been addressed. The law and order situations in Afghanistan have improved now, and the foundations of the country’s economy are also improving day by day. Political ties with neighbouring, regional countries and the international community are improving gradually. So, the major challenges that we’re facing have been reframed to a greater extent.

However, Afghanistan has come out of a four-decade-long conflict. There are still many challenges, including the economy, and we’re hopeful of finding a solution to the remaining challenges too. I’m optimistic that with the level of progress that we’re making, we will be able to deal with the remaining challenges and find a good future.

WION: You are here in Tashkent for the Afghan conference. There are two pressing issues in the international community. One is recognition of your government and the second is girls' education. When can we see both things happen?

Amir Khan Muttaqi: The Tashkent conference was a positive moot. Around 35 countries participated in the conference, and most of them were very positive in their talks, except for one or two who were negative. The participants got to know the facts, and it’s very important that they know the real facts about Afghanistan. It has been instrumental in addressing all those perceptions being propagated about us by our opponents and enemies towards the rest of the world. After getting the facts, they now have the real picture of Afghanistan in their minds, and all have emphasised the need for the start of the major economic activities, especially the railway track from Uzbekistan to Pakistan.

And other projects, such as Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI). These were the issues discussed, and we’re also given hope that now, instead of discussing wars, ceasefires, and dialogue, we are talking about economic issues, development, progress, and having good ties with the region. We take all this positively.

On girls' education

We are aware that now in Afghanistan we have around 10 million students. Earlier, education was available in around 35 percent of the areas, and now we have reached 100 percent. We have 141 special education centres and 29 others that are functional. We have around 0.45 million students in these educational centres. So, we are making good progress in the education sector, and we hope to make more improvements in the future.

Blasts inside a Gurudwara in Kabul: Afghan interior ministry says 2 injured

Twin blasts rock Kabul city: 'Gunmen stormed Gurudwara premises'

Leading the resistance movement in Panjshir against Taliban, former Afghanistan vice president Amrullah Saleh has shared the detailed account of what happened in the days leading to the fall of Kabul.

Writing the whole account for Daily Mail, the former vice president wrote, the fall of Afghanistan is not only shameful for US President Joe Biden, but also the whole of Western civilisation because everybody knows that Pakistan is running the show.

Saleh wrote that his security guard has been sworn to shoot him twice in the head in case he gets injured as he will never surrender to the Taliban.

The Saleh’s account has come amid the Taliban claims of having captured Panjshir province. Till now, Panjshir was the only Taliban-free province of the country.

There have been several reports of Panjshir residents fleeing their homes and moving to other Taliban-ruled provinces to flee the violence going on in the valley.

Reiterating about the claim of strong Pakistan support to the Taliban, the former vice president wrote the Taliban were receiving instructions from the Pakistan embassy.

"The betrayal of Afghanistan by the West is colossal...Your politicians know that Pakistan is running the show. They know al Qaeda is back in the streets of Kabul. And they know the Taliban have not reformed. They have been displaying their suicide vests in Kabul," he wrote.

On the day Kabul fell, Amrullah Saleh woke up to numerous calls from family and friends. Saleh says his efforts to reach the minister of defence and the interior minister and their deputies failed as they were not reachable. Kabul’s police chief informed him, he could hold the front for an hour.

Saleh wrote, "But in that one desperate hour, I was unable to find deployable Afghan troops anywhere in the city. I messaged our National Security Adviser to say we have to do something. I got no response from anyone. And by 9am that morning of August 15, Kabul was panicking."

When the Taliban firmed hold on Kabul, Saleh messaged Ahmad Massoud, who was in the city only. "I then went through my home and destroyed pictures of my wife and my daughters. I collected my computer and some belongings," Saleh wrote.

Saleh says he refused to be one of those politicians, who betray people and then drop a post on social media from posh hotels abroad to encourage people to fight back. "They stay in these hotels and villas abroad. And then they call on the poorest Afghans to revolt. That's craven. If we want a revolt, the revolt has to be led," he wrote.

The Islamic State on Sunday claimed responsibility for a bomb attack on passenger bus that killed one woman in Kabul, Afghanistan capital.

Dozens of people have been killed and scores wounded in deadly attacks that have punctuated the last two weeks of the fasting month of Ramadan, which ends Sunday.

A woman was killed and three others were wounded in the bus attack, Kabul police said.

The bus bombing took place just two days after a bomb blast in a mosque that claimed lives of 10 people. The blast took place on Friday just when worshippers were performing rituals.

No group claimed Friday's mosque bombing but IS took responsibility for the attack on the bus.

IS has claimed several bombings in recent weeks. The militant group has been targetting Shi'ite and Sufi minorities in the country. Afghanistan is mainly a Sunni Muslim nation.

Taliban officials insist their forces have defeated IS, but analysts say the jihadist group remains a key security challenge.

Kabul police meanwhile vowed to "ensure security" during the Eid al-Fitr holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

Meanwhile United Nations sectretary general condemned bomb blast in the mosque.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, reports of poverty in the nation have been emerging. There have been reports of many Afghans selling possessions to buy food because of the Taliban's inability to pay wages to civil servants. Also, the urban communities are facing food insecurity similar to rural areas.

Residents of Kabul, however, recently complained about the high price of food materials. The residents claimed that even after a drop in dollar’s value against Afghan currency, there has been no reduction in the price of food materials.

Deen Mohammad, a resident of Kabul was quoted by a local media house saying, "The unemployment has increased. Although the dollar dropped the prices are still high."

"The price of food materials has increased in the international market since the war in Ukraine began, so its negative impacts hit Afghanistan as well," he said.

The nation is also facing the threat of a “looming humanitarian crisis” in the country. Afghanistan had already been facing chronic poverty and drought but the situation has deteriorated since the Taliban seized power.

In September, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that its engagement with Afghanistan will remain suspended until there is clarity on the recognition of the government led by the Taliban.

"We ask all the international charity organisations to not withhold their aid and to help our exhausted nation... so that the problems of the people could be solved," said new Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund in his first address to the nation since the Taliban took over.
