U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan, rallying support on his first trip to Asia since taking office for U.S. opposition to China's growing assertiveness across the region.

Biden's comments appeared to be a departure from existing U.S. policy of so-called strategic ambiguity on its position on the self-governed island that China considers its territory and says is the most sensitive and important issue in its ties with the United States.

When asked by a reporter in Tokyo if the United States would defend Taiwan if it were attacked by China, the president answered: "Yes."

"That's the commitment we made ... We agree with a one-China policy. We've signed on to it and all the intended agreements made from there. But the idea that, that it can be taken by force, just taken by force, is just not, is just not appropriate."

He added that it was his expectation that such an event would not happen or be attempted.

While Washington is required by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, it has long followed a policy of "strategic ambiguity" on whether it would intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

Biden made a similar comment about defending Taiwan in October. At that time, a White House spokesperson said Biden was not announcing any change in U.S. policy.

The comments about Taiwan are likely to overshadow the centerpiece of Biden's visit, the launch of an Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, a broad plan providing an economic pillar for U.S. engagement with Asia.

His visit also includes meetings with the leaders of Japan, India and Australia, in the "Quad" group of countries.

Worries about China's growing might and the possibility that it could invade Taiwan have emboldened Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his ruling Liberal Democratic Party on defence, eroding some of the traditional wariness among many Japanese about taking a more robust defence posture.

STRONG JAPAN

Kishida said that he told Biden that Japan would consider various options to boost its defence capabilities, including the ability to retaliate, signalling a potential shift in Japan's defence policy.

"A strong Japan, and a strong US-Japan alliance, is a force for good in the region," Biden said in a news conference following their discussions.

Kishida said that he had gained support from Biden on Japan's becoming a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council amid growing calls for reform of the council. China and Russia are permanent members.

"President Biden expressed the necessity of reforming and strengthening the United Nations, including the Security Council, which bears a major responsibility for the peace and security of the international community," Kishida said.

Worries are growing in Asia about an increasingly assertive China, particularly in light of its close ties to Russia, and tension has risen over self-ruled Taiwan, which China considers a renegade province.

Two personnel from the US Secret Service deployed to South Korea’s Seoul were suspended and sent home following an alleged drunken altercation in an off-duty incident.

“The Secret Service is aware of an off-duty incident involving two employees which may constitute potential policy violations. The individuals will be immediately returned back to their post of duty and placed on administrative leave," NBC quoted Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the agency.

According to the South Korean, a member of Biden's security unit "engaged in violence" against a local man near the Grand Hyatt Seoul, where the US president is set to stay during his first presidential trip to Asia. The Secret Service has not yet confirmed those details, the US-based news outlet reported.

US President Joe Biden kick-started his first leg of the Asian tour with his visit to South Korea on Friday as Washington looks to boost its alliance in the region which has been witnessing rising Chinese commercial and military power.

Notably, this is Biden’s first trip to the Asian region after he became the president.

The president landed at the Osan Air Base, south of Seoul. He is expected to hold talks with his recently elected counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol on some pressing issues, including North Korea.

Moreover, there are reports that North Korea may be using his trip to test an underground nuclear or intercontinental ballistic missile.

According to CNN, which has quoted officials, Pyongyang has been getting ready to fuel an intercontinental ballistic missile, one of the key final stages in preparing for a test launch.

The White House said it has prepared for all contingencies, including a test occurring while Biden is on the Korean peninsula.

Biden will also visit US and South Korean troops, but will not make the traditional presidential trek to the fortified frontier known as the DMZ between South and North Korea, the White House said.

Hours ahead of Biden arriving, Suk-yeol signalled a warm welcome, tweeting: "A mountain shows its way to the summit to those who seek it. I am confident the ROK-US alliance that seeks to uphold the values of democracy and human rights shall only elevate in the future."

After his three-day trip, Biden will next travel to Japan for bilateral talks with the country's prime minister Fumio Kishida.

Desperate times call for desperate measures as some mothers in the United States opt to make the infant formula substitutes themselves amid a nationwide shortage of baby formula.

US President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to give baby formula manufacturers priority in supplies as the country faces an acute shortage of baby formula.

The crisis has emerged due to the storm of supply chain issues and a massive recall. But the question here is, should mothers use a homemade baby formula to feed their babies? Is it safe?

Importantly, baby formula is a necessity for many families. As the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdowns are lifting, people are now returning to work, including mothers immediately after giving birth. In such situations, they cannot breastfeed and rely upon the baby formula.

The shortage has left the parents desperate as they fear that their infants may starve as they look forward to substitutes. According to Google Trends, searches for "how to make baby formula at home" have increased by 2400% in the past month, a BBC report noted.

Experts warn against using 'homebrew'

The BBC report quoted Dr Steven Abrams, who has warned against using such homemade baby formula. Dr Abrams is the former chair of the American Academy of Paediatrics' Committee on Nutrition.

Dr Abrams said, "The standard by which we develop infant formula is breast milk. We've come to understand breast milk better and better. If they're not breastfeeding, [the formula] has got to have all the nutrients in there".

Dr Abrams further added that homemade substitutes can be dangerous in the first months of infancy because, at this stage, the baby needs nutrients like iron in its diet, which is critical for brain development.

The report also added that the homemade formulas also pose challenges with sterility. Using it regularly can result in severe malnutrition. In extreme cases, it can be fatal.
