Biden said that after he met Trump post-election in November, he told him not to go forward with threats to target those who have criticised him.&nbsp;
"I tried to make clear that there was no need, and it was counterintuitive for his interest to go back and try to settle scores," Biden told USA Today. He added that Trump did not ssay,"No, I'm going to do it". "He didn't reinforce it. He just basically listened," Biden added.&nbsp;

Two of the 37 death row inmates US President Joe Biden pardoned last month are refusing the commutation of their death sentences to life sentences. The two men, as per NBC News, have taken the unusual stance of refusing to sign paperwork that would spare them from the death chamber.&nbsp;

<h2>Who are the two death row inmates turning down clemency?</h2>
Shannon Agofsky and Len Davis, two death row inmates lodged at the US Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana, have filed emergency motions in federal court in the state's southern district against the clemency.
On December 30, 2024, the two men filed emergency motions seeking to block Biden's pardon that would commute their death sentences to life in prison without parole.

Shannon Agofsky, along with his brother Joseph Agofsky, was accused of murdering Dan Short, an Oklahoma bank president, before stealing $71,000 from his bank. In 1989, he was convicted of the crime. In 2001, he was convicted of stomping to death Luther Plant, a fellow inmate, and in 2004, a jury recommended the death sentence.
Len Davis is a former New Orleans police officer. In 1996, he was convicted for orchestrating the murder of Kim Groves, who had filed a civil rights complaint against him over the beating of a young man, Nathan Norwood, by Davis' partner, Sammie Williams. He was sentenced to death in April 1996, a sentence that was reversed subsequently. However, in October 2005, a subsequent jury once again chose the death penalty for him.
<h2>Why are they saying no to the pardon?</h2>
As per the report, the two death row inmates believe that accepting the commutation would put them at a legal disadvantage. How? The two men are seeking to appeal their cases and claim innocence; accepting the commutation could be taken as an admission of guilt.
In death penalty cases, courts take claims of error very seriously given the life-and-death situation, and an appeal could potentially earn them acquittal.&nbsp;

While the likelihood of success isn't that great, Agofsky, as per the NBC News report, says he does not want to risk the additional scrutiny.
&ldquo;To commute his sentence now, while the defendant has active litigation in court, is to strip him of the protection of heightened scrutiny. This constitutes an undue burden, and leaves the defendant in a position of fundamental unfairness, which would decimate his pending appellate procedures,&rdquo; states his court filing.
Meanwhile, Davis, in his filing, said that he &ldquo;has always maintained that having a death sentence would draw attention to the overwhelming misconduct&rdquo; he alleges against the Justice Department.

Two death row inmates turn down Biden's pardon, choose death sentence instead. Here's why

As US President Joe Biden announced the ban on new offshore oil and gas development along most US coastlines in the closing weeks of his term in office, a US-based energy research firm said that President-elect Donald Trump would not be able to reverse Biden's action.&nbsp;
ClearView Energy Partners Director of Research Kevin Book told Newsweek, "Our perception is that it can't be reversed by executive action", adding that this is not the same thing as saying that it cannot be reversed, however.&nbsp;
Biden's order comes amid Trump's pledge to "drill, baby, drill" campaign slogan. His slogan has become synonymous with his plan to boost fossil fuel production in the US and reverse climate policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

Earlier, Barack Obama also withdrew large stretches of waters from drilling. But, in 2017, Trump issued an executive order to reverse Obama's action and restore future drilling permits.&nbsp;

Biden's offshore drilling ban: Why can't Trump undo it? Read to know

US President Joe Biden was criticised by several users on social media after claims emerged that he has ordered the release of some 9/11 terrorists from the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp in Cuba. The rumours came after the Pentagon said in a press release on Monday (Jan 6) that it has transferred 11 Yemeni detainees from the controversial camp in Cuba to Oman.
The detainees who were transferred include Uthman Abd al-Rahim Muhammad Uthman, Moath Hamza Ahmed al-Alwi, Khalid Ahmed Qassim, Suhayl Abdul Anam al Sharabi, Hani Saleh Rashid Abdullah, Tawfiq Nasir Awad Al-Bihani, Omar Mohammed Ali al-Rammah, Sanad Ali Yislam Al Kazimi, Hassan Muhammad Ali Bib Attash, Sharqawi Abdu Ali Al Hajj, and Abd Al-Salam Al-Hilah.

Did Biden order release of 9/11 terrorists from Guantanamo Bay? Know the truth

US President Joe Biden will ban new offshore oil and gas development along most US coastlines, a decision President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to boost domestic energy production, may find difficult to reverse.
The move is considered mostly symbolic, as it will not impact areas where oil and gas development is currently underway, and mainly covers zones where drillers have no important prospects, including in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The White House said on Monday that Biden will use his authority under the 70-year-old Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to protect all federal waters off the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and portions of the northern Bering Sea in Alaska. The ban will affect 625 million acres (253 million hectares) of ocean.

Biden said the move was aligned with both his efforts to combat climate change and his goal to conserve 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.
He also invoked the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, saying the low drilling potential of the areas included in the ban did not justify the public health and economic risks of future leasing.
"My decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses, and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet our nation's energy needs," Biden said in a statement. "It is not worth the risks."
Around 15% of U.S. oil production comes from federal offshore acreage, mainly in the Gulf of Mexico, a share that has been falling sharply in the last decade as drilling onshore booms, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The United States is now the world's top oil and gas producer thanks to big increases in production from places like Texas and New Mexico, fueled by improved drilling technology and strong demand since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The announcement comes as Trump has pledged to reverse Biden's conservation and climate change policies when he takes office later this month.
"It's ridiculous. I'll unban it immediately. I will unban it. I have the right to unban it immediately," Trump said in an interview on the Hugh Hewitt radio program.
During his term, Biden also limited new oil and gas leasing on federal lands and waters, drawing criticism from drilling states and companies.

But the Lands Act, which allows presidents to withdraw areas from mineral leasing and drilling, does not grant them the legal authority to overturn prior bans, according to a 2019 court ruling - meaning a reversal would likely require an act of Congress. That order came in response to Trump's effort to reverse Arctic and Atlantic Ocean withdrawals made by former President Barack Obama at the end of his presidency.
Trump also used the Lands Act to ban sales of offshore drilling rights in the eastern Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida through 2032. Biden's decision will protect the same area with no expiration.
It is unclear whether lawmakers would support reversing Biden's decision to protect these waters.
A Trump-era proposal in 2018 to open up the Atlantic, Pacific and new parts of the Arctic oceans to offshore drilling drew vehement opposition from most coastal states, including those led by Republicans. The states argued at the time that offshore drilling would pose significant risks to lucrative coastal tourism.
Two years later, Trump banned drilling off the coasts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia as he campaigned for re-election.
An oil and gas industry trade group said the decision would harm American energy security and should be reversed.
"We urge policymakers to use every tool at their disposal to reverse this politically motivated decision and restore a pro-American energy approach to federal leasing," American Petroleum Institute President Mike Sommers said in a statement.
Environmental group Oceana called it a victory for Americans who depend on clean coastlines and fisheries.
"Our treasured coastal communities are now safeguarded for future generations,&rdquo; Oceana Campaign Director Joseph Gordon said in a statement.

Donald Trump on Saturday (Jan 4) slammed US President Joe Biden's administration for its order to keep flags across the country at "half-mast" in mourning over the death of former president Jimmy Carter.
As it is customary, Biden has ordered that flags across the country remain at half-staff for 30 days, which means that the American flag will remain at half-mast when Trump takes office. The US flag code details half-staff procedures, notably including a 30-day period for deceased current or former presidents.

Expressing his ire, US President-elect Trump in a post on Truth Social insinuated that this was a conspiracy by Democrats and said that "no American can be happy about it". His post comes as the United States bids farewell to its 39th president, Jimmy Carter.
<h2>What Trump said</h2>
Trump on his social media platform alleged that Democrats were "all giddy" about "our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half-mast' during my Inauguration."

Blinken in an interview with The New York Times, highlighted on the initial siege imposed by Israel on Gaza after Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.&nbsp;
The US state secretary further detailed how he met with Israeli leaders including Netanyahu during his trip to Israel after the attack and argued for hours on "end about the basic proposition that the humanitarian assistance needed to get to Palestinians in Gaza."&nbsp;

"I argued that for nine hours," he added.
But ultimately, Biden said, he had to threaten that Biden would not come to Israel if aid did not start going in.&nbsp;

President Biden cited concerns over national security as the reason for blocking the deal. &ldquo;We need major US companies representing the major share of US steelmaking capacity to keep leading the fight on behalf of America&rsquo;s national interests,&rdquo; Biden said in an announcement on Friday.

<h2>'No choice but to regard this seriously': Japan&rsquo;s industry minister</h2>
The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Japan.
Japan&rsquo;s industry minister Yoji Muto said, &ldquo;It is incomprehensible and regrettable that the Biden administration has made this kind of decision, citing national security concerns.&rdquo; He added, &ldquo;The Japanese government has no choice but to regard this seriously.&rdquo;
Nippon Steel and US Steel have also condemned the decision, alleging that the review process was manipulated for political purposes.
&ldquo;It is shocking and deeply troubling that the US government would treat an ally like Japan in this way,&rdquo; the companies said in a joint statement.
President Biden justified his decision by pointing to &ldquo;credible evidence&rdquo; that Nippon Steel, through the acquisition, &ldquo;might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States.&rdquo;
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), responsible for assessing foreign acquisitions, had failed to reach a consensus by its December 23 deadline on whether the deal posed a security risk.

The two companies argued that the president had not provided any substantial evidence to support his claims.
They described the review as &ldquo;deeply corrupted by politics,&rdquo; alleging that the outcome had been &ldquo;pre-determined&rdquo; to align with Biden&rsquo;s political agenda.
The companies added, &ldquo;We believe that President Biden has sacrificed the future of American steelworkers for his own political agenda.&rdquo;
They said the decision sent &ldquo;a chilling message to any company based in a US-allied country contemplating significant investment in the United States.&rdquo;

As part of the original agreement, Nippon Steel is required to pay a $565 million break-fee if the deal is blocked.
This marks the first time a US president has stopped a merger or acquisition involving a Japanese company.
The deal, initially announced in 2023, has been a source of political controversy, particularly during the run-up to the November US presidential election.
Both President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have openly opposed the acquisition.

US President Joe Biden has discussed plans to launch potential strikes on Iranian nuclear sites if the Islamic Republic moves to expedite its programme ahead of the January 20 inauguration of the new administration. Axios reported that White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan secretly briefed Biden about the potential strikes weeks ago, citing a senior official.
The official however added that there was no additional intelligence on Iran&rsquo;s nuclear programme and Biden didn&rsquo;t make any final decision.
The briefing was part of &ldquo;prudent scenario planning,&rdquo; said the official.
Axios reported citing another White House source that the current administration was not actively discussing possible military action against Iran's nuclear facilities.
<h2>Sullivan's warning last month</h2>
Sullivan last month warned that US has to be extremely careful in the wake of &ldquo;strategic blows&rdquo; to the Islamic Republic amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
&ldquo;You can look at the public statements of Iranian officials, which have changed in the last few months as they have been dealt these strategic blows, to raise the question: Do we have to change our doctrine at some point? The fact that that&rsquo;s coming out publicly is something that has to be looked at extremely carefully,&rdquo; he said at the time.
President-elect Donald Trump waged a &ldquo;maximum pressure&rdquo; campaign on Iran during his first administration, which also saw the US unilaterally walking out from the nuclear deal. Biden tried to revive the deal with Tehran but to no avail. Trump during his presidential campaign vowed to &ldquo;make a deal.&rdquo;

The suspect involved in the deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans has been identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, a senior law enforcement source told The Guardian.
Jabbar, aged 42, is a US citizen living in Texas. Reports indicate he has a prior criminal record that includes theft and driving with a suspended licence.
The truck used to kill 10 in the massacre came into the US from Mexico&nbsp;through Eagle Pass, Texas, over a month ago, though some&nbsp;earlier reports erroneously said that it entered&nbsp;two days before the incident.

During the attack, Jabbar was wearing body armour and driving a rental truck that carried a black flag. According to the FBI, a flag for an IS group was found in the pickup truck driven into the crowd.
Reacting to the incident, outgoing US President Joe Biden said, &ldquo;I have been continually briefed since early this morning by federal law enforcement leadership and my homeland security team, including Secretary of Homeland Security Ali Mayorkas, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, and the Mayor of New Orleans regarding the horrific incident that occurred there overnight."

He added, &ldquo;The FBI is taking the lead in the investigation and is investigating this incident as an act of terrorism. I am grateful for the brave and swift response of local law enforcement in preventing even greater death and injury. I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work assiduously to get to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible and to ensure that there is no remaining threat of any kind.&rdquo;

Suspect behind New Orleans truck attack identified as US citizen Shamsud Din Jabbar

US President-elect Donald Trump linked the deadly truck attack in New Orleans on Wednesday (January 1) to illegal immigration, an issue he raised repeatedly during his election campaign.
In a post on his social media platform, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/watch-elon-musk-his-son-x-celebrate-new-years-eve-with-trump-at-mar-a-lago-8583331">Truth Social</a>, Trump suggested that the suspect, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was not a US citizen. However, this claim has not been confirmed by law authorities. "When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true," Trump wrote. The police have not disclosed the nationality or identity of the attacker.

Joe Biden slams Trump while paying tribute to Jimmy Carter

US President Joe Biden regrets taking his candidature down for the 2024 Presidential election and believes he would have defeated President-elect Donald Trump, said the White House, as per the Washington Post. Biden also reportedly said that choosing Merrick Garland as his attorney general was a mistake. He said that Garland, who is a former US appeals court judge, was slow in prosecuting Trump for the January 6 Capitol riot but aggressive while prosecuting Biden's son Hunter. He reportedly said he should have chosen someone else for the role.&nbsp;
With just three weeks remaining of his presidency in the White House, Biden clarified he made a mistake after a woeful debate performance against the Republican a month before the election.&nbsp;

After mounting pressure from his own party workers, Biden removed his name from the polls and replaced it with his vice president Kamala Harris. The pressure on Biden came after election polls showed Trump seeking a second term in the White House.&nbsp;
Harris's nomination improved the overall statistics for the Democrats but could not tilt the polls in favour of Trump wrong.&nbsp;
According to the report by the Washinton Post, Biden and his aides did not blame Harris but showed determination that the results would have been in his favour if he had stood with his candidacy.&nbsp;
However, Harris supporters dispute this claim as they blame Biden took too much time to withdraw his name, which ended up giving Harris too little time to launch an effective campaign.&nbsp;
Richard Blumenthal, a Democratic senator for Connecticut, criticised Biden for his late decision. "Biden ran on the promise that he was going to be a transitional president, and in effect, have one term before handing it off to another generation," he said as reported by the media house.

The United States is set to announce $1.25 billion in military aid for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/thousands-of-animals-poisoned-blown-up-at-top-secret-uk-military-lab-8572706">Ukraine</a>, according to a report by The Associated Press (AP).
<h2>What will the aid package include?</h2>
This aid package will include a large quantity of munitions, along with those for the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and the HAWK air defence system. Stinger missiles, along with 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds, are also part of the aid.

The announcement will mark the Biden administration&rsquo;s 22nd aid package under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. Officials are expected to make the announcement on Monday, according to AP.
Earlier this month, President Biden announced a separate $988 million aid package for Ukraine, aimed at ensuring the country has "the tools it needs to prevail in its fight against Russian aggression."
During a recent speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin reaffirmed the administration&rsquo;s stance on supporting Ukraine.
"This administration has made its choice. And so has a bipartisan coalition in Congress. The next administration must make its own choice," Austin said.
"But, from this library, from this podium, I am confident that President Reagan would have stood on the side of Ukraine, American security and human freedom," he added.
<h2>Why does this package matter?</h2>
This new package comes amidst Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine&rsquo;s power infrastructure and ahead of the incoming Trump administration.
During his campaign, President-elect <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-president-elect-donald-trump-names-fierce-fighter-kevin-cabrera-as-panama-ambassador-8567276" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a>, along with Vice President-elect JD Vance, heavily criticised the Biden administration&rsquo;s support for Ukraine following Russia&rsquo;s invasion in 2022.

Trump during his campaign had claimed he would bring the war to an end "within 24 hours" of taking office, although he did not provide specific details on how he would do it.
While Vice President-elect JD Vance had earlier said that Ukraine should cede the territory seized by Russia and establish a demilitarised zone. This proposal was rejected by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
