New York, United States
The United States is on the brink of another government shutdown, sparking concerns about the impact on federal services, the economy, and Americans' daily lives. With the deadline for a new spending bill fast approaching, lawmakers are scrambling to reach a compromise to avoid another shutdown.

A look at recent history

The US has experienced several government shutdowns in recent years. In 2018-2019, the longest shutdown in US history lasted 35 days, sparked by disputes over border security and President Trump's demand for a border wall. In 2013, a 16-day shutdown occurred during the Obama administration, caused by disagreements over the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, two consecutive shutdowns in 1995-1996, totaling 26 days, took place during the Clinton administration, stemming from conflicts over budget cuts.

What's at stake?

A government shutdown would have far-reaching consequences, including:
- Federal services: National parks, museums, and monuments would close, affecting tourism and local economies.
- Government payments: Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid payments could be delayed.
- Military and defense: Troops would continue to work, but without pay.
- Economy: A shutdown could cost billions, affecting businesses and financial markets.
- Healthcare: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) would be impacted.

What's next?

Lawmakers have several options:
- Short-term continuing resolution: A temporary extension of current funding levels.
- Omnibus spending bill: A comprehensive bill funding all federal agencies.
- Minibus spending bill: A smaller bill funding select agencies.
- Executive actions: President Biden could use executive powers to mitigate the shutdown's impact.
- Emergency funding: Congress could pass emergency funding bills.

The road ahead

The recent rejection of a Trump-backed funding proposal underscores the deep divisions within Congress. Some factions insist on strict spending cuts, while others refuse to compromise on essential domestic programs.
As negotiations continue, the next few hours and days are critical. Will Congress find a way to keep the lights on, or will the nation once again witness the fallout of political dysfunction? For millions of Americans, the answer will have immediate and lasting consequences.

The Republican-led House rejected a temporary funding plan backed by President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday with just over 24 hours to go before a US government shutdown. Watch this report for more details!

US immigration authorities removed over 270,000 people last financial year, figures showed Thursday (Dec 19), weeks before Donald Trump takes office threatening to deport millions of migrants.
The tally of removals is the final annual report under President Joe Biden and is higher than at any time in the last decade — including during Trump's first term as president.
The bulk of those forced to leave the United States had crossed the southern border illegally, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in its report.

Around a third of them had criminal convictions, or were facing criminal charges.
Covering 12 months to the end of September, the period largely coincided with the presidential campaign in which Trump made clamping down on migration a key feature.
He pledged to launch the largest deportation operation in US history when he takes office on January 20.
The promise — which focused heavily on the unsubstantiated claim that migrants commit more crimes than US citizens -- proved popular with voters.
Trump has offered few details on how the operation would be carried out, with analysis suggesting it would be costly and impractical with current staffing levels.

"Every year, our workforce faces tremendous challenges — but every year, they meet those challenges head-on," said ICE Deputy Director Patrick Lechleitner.
Illegal crossings surged after Biden took office, though declined sharply over the last year after his administration tightened rules on claiming asylum.
Estimates suggest between 11 and 15 million people live in the United States illegally.
Trump and his supporters insist the number is far higher.
Many of those in the country without authorization work and pay taxes, often performing difficult or dangerous jobs that citizens don't want to do.
Opponents of Trump's pledged crackdown say the economy could suffer if he tries to deport illegal migrants on the scale he has suggested and say it would create labour shortages in housing, agriculture and social care.
Economists say any such shortage would push prices up, and undermine one of Trump's key election promises to reduce inflation.

Donald Trump has made his intentions clear regarding a possible government shutdown, saying that he wants it to happen under President Joe Biden’s administration. “If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now, under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under ‘TRUMP.’ This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday (December 20). House Republicans to make another attempt to pass bill to prevent government shutdown Meanwhile, House Republicans are preparing to make another attempt to pass a bill to prevent a government shutdown past midnight, according to Politico. Republican congressman Ralph Norman, a member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus, told the publication that the party plans to push the bill through the rules committee, which would require only a simple majority in the House for approval. Democratic party aides have been floating ideas for a Kamala Harris political comeback, looking forward to another run at the US's highest office even after Republican Donald Trump defeated Democratic Party nominee last month in the US Presidential elections.

Earlier also, Harris did not rule out a second run for the presidency and now has been reportedly considering a run for the California governorship, currently held by Gavin Newsom until 2027.

There were rumours that Newsom was also a presidential contender during this year's elections when Joe Biden stepped down from a rematch with Donald Trump.

Donald Trump's legal team on Tuesday (Dec 3) asked a US court to dismiss his criminal fraud conviction in the hush money case involving a porn star, using the same argument President Joe Biden used to pardon his son, Hunter: unfair targeting due to political motives.

Hunter Biden was pardoned by the US president on December 1 despite his conviction on tax evasion and firearms charges. While issuing the full and unconditional pardon, Biden said Hunter was "selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted" by the Department of Justice (DOJ) "only because he is my son."

Trump team's argument

In a 69-page filing, Trump's legal team drew comparisons between their case and Biden's reasoning.

Presenting their case to presiding judge Juan Merchan, they claimed that the DOJ similarly targeted Trump with politically motivated investigations.

Trump's team in its filing said that Biden's "comments amounted to an extraordinary condemnation of President Biden's own DOJ," and that "This is the same DOJ that coordinated and oversaw the politically-motivated, election-interference witch hunts targeting President Trump."

It also once again invoked presidential immunity — that the Supreme Court said only extends to 'official acts' while president — and the Presidential Transition Act, among other laws, to "immediately dismiss the Indictment and vacate the jury's verdicts."

Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records, related to payments of $130,000 made to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about an alleged affair during his 2016 election campaign. Trump has repeatedly denied any affair.

Judge Merchan, on November 22, delayed sentencing because of Trump's victory in the presidential election.

With Trump set to take office again in January, now the judge has to decide to either dismiss the case entirely or suspend the legal consequences until the end of Trump's second term.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has suggested delaying further legal actions, given the "unprecedented circumstances" situation caused by Trump's election win.

One of the Harris advisors said, “She is ending this race in a very different place than other nominees that have lost. Her approval is higher. People were very happy with the race that she ran.”
However, Harris has not revealed her thoughts on this, but is said to be “processing” her loss and plans to “stay in the fight”.
“The fight that fueled our campaign – a fight for freedom and opportunity – that did not end on November 5,” Harris said on a call with donors and supporters in November. Reportedly, she used the word “fight” 19 times during that call.

Washington DC, US Democratic party aides have been floating ideas for a Kamala Harris political comeback, looking forward to another run at the US's highest office even after Republican Donald Trump defeated Democratic Party nominee last month in the US Presidential elections. Some Democratic party aides believe Trump has sufficiently overturned the norms of losing White House candidates' not attempting a second bite of the proverbial apple to give Harris the opportunity of a repeat bid in 2028, The Washington Post reported. Also read: US election: Where did Kamala Harris' campaign money of $1 billion go? Donna Brazile, a Harris ally, Al Gore 2000 presidential campaign manager, and a political commentator, said, “Since Donald Trump has rewritten the rules—the norms—I don’t believe Kamala Harris or anyone should try to go with precedent, ever." She added, "There are no rule books.” “The rules potentially don’t apply this time, and she still absolutely could have a mulligan because of the unique circumstances of this race and the candidate switch," Molly Murphy, a pollster who worked on both the Biden and Harris campaigns said. “But I don’t think it will be a given.” The Democratic Party has been shaping an argument, saying that her loss to Trump was not as comprehensive as has been popularly portrayed. He was appointed the country's prime minister by Yoon in 2022. This is his second term in the role, having previously served as prime minister in 2007-2008 under then president Roh Moo-hyun.
While appointing him, Yoon had said: "He has served in key posts in state affairs solely through recognition of his skills and expertise, unrelated to political factions".
"I think Han is the right candidate to carry out national affairs while overseeing and coordinating the cabinet, with a wealth of experience that encompasses public and private sectors."

How long will Han Duck-soo serve as acting president?

It is expected that Han Duck-soo will remain in his role for months, until the South Korean Constitutional Court decides Yoon's fate. If the court decides to remove Yoon, a presidential election must be held in 60 days, and Han will stay at the helm till the new president takes over.
However, the nation's main opposition Democratic Party has filed a complaint against Han. They want him to be included in the investigations for failing to block Yoon's attempt at martial law. If he also gets impeached, the finance minister is next in line among cabinet members to serve as acting president.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan on Friday (Dec 13) said that “for many months, (Palestinian militant group) Hamas has not been prepared to even do the basic things of coming to the table with the names of hostages,” amid the talks of a ceasefire deal to end the war in Gaza.

Sullivan's comments in the interview with Channel 13 came after Hamas gave a list of hostages to mediators that it has planned to release in the first phase of the agreement, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. However, WSJ’s claim was later denied by an Arab diplomat, the Times of Israel reported.

Sullivan further stated in his interview, “Israel negotiated hard to defend and justify its position in this negotiation". He added that the Palestinian militant group “has been deeply intransigent".
