Barcelona president Joan Laporta said Friday that a European Super League project could begin as soon as next season, adding that he does not care if English clubs join or not.

However various clubs Laporta suggested might form part of the league later responded by dismissing interest in the potential new competition.

Spanish giants Barcelona, along with Real Madrid, launched a Super League project in 2021 which quickly collapsed after fan and institutional fury, with the other clubs pulling out.

In December the European Union's Court of Justice said world and European football governing bodies FIFA and UEFA had infringed competition law by blocking the breakaway league.

Super League promoters A22 Sports Management swiftly announced plans for a new 64-team tournament to compete with or replace UEFA's Champions League.

"The Super League could start next season, or it will be in 2025-26, and if not, I will rethink everything," Laporta told RAC1 radio station.

Six Premier League clubs were part of the initial proposal but pulled out and have shown no intention of returning.

"I don't care if the English teams join," added Laporta.

"They already have their Super League -- the Premier League."

Laporta said the project could begin with just 16 teams.

"The European Cup started in 1955 with very few clubs and later became the top competition in Europe," said Laporta.&nbsp;

"I imagine a first phase like this, and (more clubs) then integrating."

Later Friday some of the clubs named by Laporta began to deny interest in participating.

"AS Roma reiterates that it does not support any project related to the so-called Super League," said the Italian side in a statement.

A source close to Inter Milan said the club's potential participation was an "unfounded rumour".

The Champions League runners-up said in a statement in December football's wellbeing can only be secured by working "in partnership and collaboration with UEFA and FIFA" and the European Club Association (ECA).

A spokesman for Ligue 1 side Marseille denied any interest on the part of his side and reiterated comments made by club president Pablo Longoria in December.

"A closed league is not football -- sporting meritocracy should earn you your position," Longoria had said.

"I don't see a closed league as the future of European football."

A European Super League has been touted as a creation for overspending clubs to improve their financial situation.

"The Super League means that you're putting 100 million euros ($109 million) on the table for a club just for competing in the competition, at least, and you don't even get that for winning the Champions League," said Laporta.

Messi wanted to stay at Barcelona but the club could not afford to keep him because of debt of over one billion euros ($1.1 billion).

"I have spoken to Leo to somehow redirect a situation that occurred, in which I had to put the club ahead of everything, even him, who is the best player in the world," Laporta told Catalan regional public television station TV3. &nbsp;"The truth is that it was a very affectionate conversation, very pleasant, and we have also been sending each other messages lately -- I congratulated him on the World Cup."

In the early hours of Monday morning after Barcelona won 4-2 at Espanyol to clinch La Liga, Laporta said on Twitch that "we will do everything possible" to sign Messi.

However, speaking on TV3, he was more cautious.

"He is a Paris Saint-Germain player and what we will do is improve the team in all areas, we have already worked on that," said Laporta. "I think it would do me a disservice to talk about these questions about Leo, because he belongs to a team like Paris Saint-Germain, and we have to wait until the end of the season, until it is over and then we can talk more calmly about this."

AFP reported last week that sources close to negotiations said it was a "done deal" that Messi would move to Saudi Arabia next season.

However, Laporta said that despite the money on offer in the Middle East -- a reported 400 million dollars a year -- Barcelona could compete for Messi's signature.

"With all due respect to Saudi Arabia, Barca is Barca, and it is his home," added Laporta. "We can compete with everyone. History backs us, the feelings are too strong, we have 400 million fans around the world too."

Barcelona need to make over 200 million euros in savings, or new income, to be able to operate without restrictions under La Liga financial fair play rules.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta claimed Lionel Messi's historic chapter at the club is not over yet when asked about the possibility of bringing him back to the club. One of the greatest players to have played for Barcelona, Messi had joined the Spanish club's famed La Masia academy at the tender age of 13 and rose through the ranks to play for the senior team.

Messi went on to become one of the legends of the game at Barcelona and played an instrumental role in helping the club dominate Europe. Messi made his first-team debut for Barcelona in 2005/06 season and went on to feature in 16 straight seasons for the club helping them win numerous trophies and accolades.

The 34-year-old had to leave as a free agent last summer after Barcelona failed to offer him a new contract due to La Liga rules and their poor financial situation. It brought an end to Messi's glorious spell at the club as he joined Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) where he currently has a year left on his contract.

Messi had even offered to reduce his salary to sign a new contract at FC Barcelona last year but he had to be let go due to financial constraints. Nonetheless, Barcelona president Laporta has claimed Messi's grand chapter at Barcelona is not over yet and that there is a distinct possibility that the Argentine will return to the club in the future.

“Messi has been everything. For Barca, he has possibly been the best player in history, the most efficient, only comparable to Johan Cruyff in the history of Barca. Joan Laporta returned as Barcelona president on Sunday after winning the club's elections by a landslide, with his central pledge to try to persuade Lionel Messi to stay.&nbsp;

Laporta was last president at Barca between 2003 and 2010, which included overseeing the hugely successful appointment of Pep Guardiola as coach and the iconic treble-winning team of 2008/9.&nbsp;

In total, the club won four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues during Laporta's seven-year spell in charge.

The 58-year-old will return after holding off competition from Victor Font and Toni Freixa, the other two candidates to gain enough support to make the final stage.&nbsp;

Laporta won 30,184 votes, Font 16,679 and Freixa 4,769 from a total of 55,611 lodged by the club's members.

Amid champagne celebrations shared with his team on Sunday night, Laporta shouted with a grin on his face: "Now let's go to Paris and see if we can make another 'remontada' happen!"&nbsp;

Barcelona face Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in the Champions League last 16, with a 4-1 deficit to make up from the opening leg.&nbsp;

Longer-term, Laporta's task will be to rebuild a club in crisis, with crippling debts exacerbated by the pandemic, its reputation damaged and Messi considering leaving for free when his contract expires this summer.&nbsp;

He has said he will do everything possible to keep Messi at Camp Nou and campaigned heavily on the idea he was the best-placed candidate to convince the Argentinian, owing to their relationship during his previous time in charge.&nbsp;
