Chinese hackers who tapped into Verizon's system targeted phones used by people affiliated with the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, a person familiar with the situation said on Friday (Oct 26).

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, were also targeted, according to media reports.

The New York Times reported investigators were working to determine what communications, if any, were taken from Trump and Vance.

The Trump campaign was made aware this week that Trump and Vance were among a number of people inside and outside of government whose phone numbers were targeted through the infiltration of Verizon phone systems, the Times report added.

Steven Cheung, the campaign's communications director, said Vice President Harris has emboldened China and Iran to attack U.S. infrastructure to prevent Trump from returning to office.

While noting that it was not aware of the specific situation, the Chinese embassy in Washington said China opposes cyber attacks and cyber thefts in all forms.

"The presidential elections are the United States' domestic affairs. China has no intention and will not interfere in the U.S. election," an embassy spokesperson said when reached for comment.

The Trump campaign was hacked earlier this year after which the U.S. Justice Department charged three members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps with the hack, accusing them of trying to disrupt the Nov. 5 election.

US vice presidential contenders JD Vance and Tim Walz clashed on Tuesday (Oct 1) in the first and potentially the last televised debate before the November elections. The two candidates clashed over a variety of issues, including abortion and immigration, even as the discussions repeatedly circled back to Vance's running mate Donald Trump. How many times was Trump mentioned? According to AFP, Trump's name overshadowed many of the exchanges, coming up over 80 times- twice as many times as Walz's running mate Kamala Harris. However, the debate between the Republican candidate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, and his Democratic counterpart, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, took a deeper dive into policy compared to the September debate between Trump and Kamala Harris. JD Vance vs Tim Walz: Details on when and where to watch US vice presidential debate

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance engaged in the 2024 Vice Presidential debate on Tuesday (Oct 1) at the CBS Broadcast Centre in New York. Unlike previous presidential debates, the event was relatively calm, but both candidates criticised each other's presidential running mates on various key issues.

Throughout the debate, the two candidates exchanged views on gun violence, reproductive rights, immigration and climate change. Walz, who appeared nervous at the beginning, gradually became more assertive as the debate continued. Vance, on the other hand, focused his criticism on Vice President Kamala Harris, defending Trump’s policies while attacking Harris’s stances.

Self-styled free speech champion, X owner Elon Musk, on Thursday (Sep 26) came under fire for suspending a journalist’s account for posting a document allegedly hacked by Iran. JD Vance reveals what Donald Trump told him after surviving another assassination attempt

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance took a swipe at pop star Taylor Swift for backing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris. The elections are scheduled for November with both Trump and Harris ready to lock horns for the top post.

Slamming Taylor Swift for her choice, JD Vance called her a “disconnected billionaire” and said that she was unaware of the problems faced by the common American.

We like her music, not her choice says JD Vance on Taylor Swift

Speaking to Fox News' The Story, Vance said, "We admire Taylor Swift's music, but I don't think most Americans, whether they like her music or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and problems of most Americans.”

He said that as Americans largely face issues, it doesn’t hurt Taylor Swift and hence she’s disassociated with the current problems. JD Vance said, “When grocery prices go up by 20 per cent, it hurts most Americans. (But) it doesn't hurt Taylor Swift.”

He added, “When housing prices become unaffordable, it doesn't affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire. It does affect most middle-class Americans all over our country.”

Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris

JD Vance’s comments came a day after Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and said that she would vote for her in the upcoming presidential election.
Endorsing Kamala Harris, Taylor Swift wrote, “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”

She added, "It really conjured up my fears around Al, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth."

We like her music, not her choice says JD Vance on Taylor Swift Speaking to Fox News' The Story, Vance said, "We admire Taylor Swift's music, but I don't think most Americans, whether they like her music or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and problems of most Americans.” He said that as Americans largely face issues, it doesn’t hurt Taylor Swift and hence she’s disassociated with the current problems. JD Vance said, “When grocery prices go up by 20 per cent, it hurts most Americans. (But) it doesn't hurt Taylor Swift.” He added, “When housing prices become unaffordable, it doesn't affect Taylor Swift or any other billionaire. It does affect most middle-class Americans all over our country.” Vance: “I don't think most Americans are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and problems of most Americans” 🤔 pic.twitter.com/5xNUiWqyQt — Kamala HQ (@KamalaHQ) September 11, 2024 × Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris JD Vance’s comments came a day after Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and said that she would vote for her in the upcoming presidential election. I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” She added, "It really conjured up my fears around Al, and the dangers of spreading misinformation.
Donald Trump's presidential campaign on Saturday (Aug 10) claimed that it had been hacked. It further suggested that Iranian actors were involved in stealing and distributing sensitive internal documents.

The hackers reportedly distributed documents and a dossier on Trump's vice-presidential pick, JD Vance.

"These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process," Donald Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement.

News outlet Politico said it had received emails with the campaign material from a source who refused to identify themselves. The outlet said it received the first set of documents on July 22 via email.

The document was dated Feb. 23, almost five months before Trump selected Vance as his running mate.

"The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House. Any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications is doing the bidding of America's enemies and doing exactly what they want," Cheung added.

Microsoft points to Iranian threat

The news of the leak comes a day after Microsoft issued a report documenting foreign agents and their attempts to interfere in the US elections in 2024. The findings revealed that Iran is evolving its tactics for the elections which is likely to have global implications.

"A group run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence unit sent a spear-phishing email to a high-ranking official of a presidential campaign” and “another group with assessed links to the IRGC compromised a user account with minimal access permissions at a county-level government,” the report said.

The report added that another Tehran-backed group had been launching "secret" news sites that used AI to lift content from legitimate news sites, and targeted US voters on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

Watch | US elections 2024: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris say they've agreed to Sept 10 debate × Microsoft points to Iranian threat The news of the leak comes a day after Microsoft issued a report documenting foreign agents and their attempts to interfere in the US elections in 2024.
