Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 15) officially named JD Vance, a United States senator from Ohio, as his running mate. The name was announced on the first night of the Republican National Convention (RNC) where the former president made a stunning entrance two days after an assassination attempt.

Republicans, especially in Middletown, Ohio, where Vance grew up, have come forward and supported Trump's pick. As quoted by the news agency Reuters, a resident identified as Phil Kamaris, said, "I think it's great. We've got somebody from our area, Middletown. Yes, I'm glad. Good choice."

"I'm sure he'll be able to do best for me because he knows my life here, just like his," Kamaris added.

In American politics, Vance's ascent has been unusual. He grew up in poverty in southern Ohio, joined the Marine Corps and was awarded a scholarship to Yale Law School. After that, he worked in San Francisco as a venture capitalist.

Vance is the author of the bestselling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy", which helped him gain prominence. In the memoir, he explored the socioeconomic problems confronting his hometown.

Vance grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and joined the US Marines after high school. He also served as a combat journalist and public relations officer during the Iraq War. Here’s more on JD Vance:

1. Donald’s namesake

JD Vance was born James Donald Bowman in August 1984 in Middletown, Ohio. So apparently, Republicans have two Donalds at the helm of the 2024 presidential election campaign.

2. Best-selling author

Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy was published in June 2016. The book argued that the decline of post-industrial America was due in large part to the social pathologies of the white working class, rather than the decline of the industrial economy in the US.

“There is a lack of agency here [in Middletown] - a feeling that you have little control over your life and a willingness to blame everyone but yourself,” Vance wrote.

3. How his book accelerated Trump’s rise

“To understand me, you must understand that I am a Scots-Irish hillbilly at heart,” Vance wrote in Hillbilly Elegy. The book was released in 2016, the same year the former president first took office, and the book was seen as an insightful look into rural America, which reportedly contributed to Trump's rise.

4. It all started at Yale

Vance went to Yale Law School in 2010, where he met Usha Chilukuri, his wife. The couple married in 2014 and held a separate Hindu ceremony. The couple now have three children.

5. In 2016, Vance was a critic of Trump

During the 2016 election, Vance emerged as a vocal critic of Donald Trump: “I’m a Never Trump guy,” he told Charlie Rose in October 2016. “My god what an idiot,” he posted about Trump that same month.

6. He regrets “being wrong” about Trump

“I regret being wrong about the guy,” Vance said about Trump several days later on the campaign trail.

“I think he was a good president, I think he made a lot of good decisions for people, and I think he took a lot of flak.” He later added: “He’s the best president of my lifetime.”

7. Critic of US support to Ukraine

Vance is a leading critic of US support for Ukraine. “I got to be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another,” Vance told Steve Bannon in an interview in 2022.

8. He sees ‘culture was as class war’

He believes that “the culture war is class war”, and that pushing back against the cultural values of progressive elites is necessary to advance the economic and political interests of the working class. In the Senate, he has introduced bills criminalising gender-affirming care for transgender kids and a crackdown on affirmative action policies at colleges and universities against the so-called culture war.

He also publicly supports a 15-week abortion ban with exceptions for rape, incest and threats to the life of the mother.

9. 'If I had been vice president...'

Vance once said that if he had been in Mike Pence’s shoes in 2021, he would not have certified the results of the 2020 election: “If I had been vice president, I would have told the states, like Pennsylvania, Georgia and so many others, that we needed to have multiple slates of electors and I think the U.S. Congress should have fought over it from there”.

10. Flag bearer of ‘New Right’

In the Senate, Vance has emerged as Trump's defender and the flag-bearer of the “New Right,” a movement of young conservatives trying to push the Republican Party in a more populist, nationalist and culturally conservative direction.

JD Vance: Marine Corps veteran, bestselling author, US Senator- 10 things to know about Trump's running mate

Ex-US president Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 15) finally revealed the name of his running mate and the apparent heir of his America First movement—JD Vance. He is a politician with little political experience, with just two years in Congress under his belt. In a Trump 2.0 administration, his views on the world will have a great impact on the USA's foreign policy, especially as Trump will remain focused on 'fixing' a lot of 'broken' things at home. With elections approaching in November, people are now wondering what the Trump-Vance duo will look like in terms of foreign policy vis-à-vis Ukraine as the war drags on in its third year.

Vance vice presidency on Ukraine

Vance is one of the influential 'Asia First' Republican politicians. These politicians advocate an increased emphasis on US relations with Asian nations, the China threat and limited attention on Europe. On Ukraine, these politicians say the US should stop providing security blanket to other nations and reinforce defence at the chaotic southern border with Mexico. Vance has also urged USA's European allies to step up their support for Kyiv in the past.

'I don't care'

For instance, when the war first started in February 2022, Vance declared that he didn't really care what happened to Ukraine.

"I gotta be honest with you, I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or another," he said. He has also advocated a foreign policy that "abandons" Europe.

Earlier this year, Vance spearheaded a Republican effort to kill off a Ukraine aid bill. The effort failed but Vance later said, "We were able to make it pretty clear to Europe and the rest of the world that America can’t write blank checks indefinitely.”

In an interview with Politico, Vance once also opposed sending military aid to Ukraine, saying, "How long is this expected to go on? How much is it expected to cost? And importantly, how are we actually supposed to produce the weapons necessary to support the Ukrainians?”

Four months before the election, almost fifty thousand Republicans came for the four-day event. The assassination attempt, which resulted in one bystander's death, injuries to two others, and an ear injury for Trump, was anticipated to overshadow the event. Amidst criticism over its failure to protect Trump from the attacker, the Secret Service asserted it was "fully prepared" to maintain security at the convention. Trump is leading numerous polls despite being convicted in his hush-money criminal case in New York. At 81 years old, Biden is being urged by members of his own party to withdraw from the race due to worries about his age. (With inputs from agencies)

Trump secures Republican nomination after assassination attempt, picks JD Vance as running mate

On the first day of the Republican National Convention, Ohio Senator JD Vance received an official ticket for the 2024 Presidential elections as former US President Donald Trump's running mate. If the current polls convert to reality, Vance will be the next Vice President of the United States.

Eight years ago, 39-year-old freshman senator from Ohio, said he feared Trump could become “America’s Hitler”. Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri, a corporate litigator based in San Francisco, whose parents are from India. During their wedding in Kentucky in 2014, they also had a separate ceremony where they were blessed by a Hindu pundit, as reported by The New York Times.

Vance grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and joined the US Marines after high school, serving as a combat journalist and public relations officer during the Iraq War.

After his military service, he completed a degree in political science and philosophy at Ohio State University. He then studied law at Yale Law School, where he was an editor for the Yale Law Journal.

Upon graduating from Yale in 2013, he practiced law briefly before moving to San Francisco to work as a venture capitalist, including a role at Peter Thiel’s Mithril Capital.

Vance gained fame with his 2016 best-seller, Hillbilly Elegy. Released the same year Trump first took office, the book was seen as an insightful look into rural America, which contributed to Trump's rise.

The New York Times described Hillbilly Elegy as "a compassionate, discerning sociological analysis of the white underclass that has influenced the politics of rebellion, notably Donald J. Trump’s rise." A film adaptation of the book came out in 2020.

At that time, Vance was a vocal critic of Trump. In an October 2016 interview, Vance cakled himself "Never Trump guy”. In a July 2016 op-ed for The Atlantic, he argued that Trump’s promises were like “cultural heroin,” offering temporary relief but failing to address deeper issues.

Vance’s views on Trump are notably different now. He reportedly voted for Trump in 2020 and, with Trump’s endorsement, won his first Senate seat in 2022.

He has also become "the standard-bearer of the ‘New Right’, a loose movement of young conservatives aiming to steer the Republican Party towards a more populist, nationalist, and culturally conservative stance," according to Politico.

In a post on Truth Social announcing the appointment, Trump said that Vance “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.” Several of these Midwestern states are likely to play a critical role in November’s election.
