<p>The data revealed that the Japanese society is aging across the country. It recommends that foreign nationals are taking a bigger role in making up for the shrinking population.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Number of Japanese nationals decreased for a 14th year by around 800,000 people. Japanese nationals now number 122.42 million. The numbers have been taken from resident registration data collected as of January 1, 2023. The data was released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.</p>

<p>The data&nbsp;showed that number of Japanese nationals fell in all 47 prefectures for the first time.</p>

<p>The number of foreign nationals living in Japan was a record 2.99 million, a 10.7% increase from the previous year, the biggest year-on-year increase since the ministry began tracking the data a decade ago.</p>

<p>Just before the pandemic, on Janury 1, 2020, there were 2.87 million foreigners living in Japan.</p>

<p>The new data has showed that Japan's total population fell to 125.42 million.</p>

<p>The population has fallen every year since peaking in 2008 due to a low birth rate, reaching a record low last year.</p>

<h2><strong>Government takes steps</strong></h2>

<p>The government aims to address the problem by various means, including employing more women, the top government spokesperson said.</p>

<p>"To secure a stable workforce, the government will promote labour market reforms to maximise the employment of women, the elderly and others," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said.</p>

<p>Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has made reversal of drastic decrease in population a top priority of his government.</p>

<p>In spite of high levels of debt, the government plans to earmark 3.5 trillion yen ($25 billion) a year for child care and other measures to support parents.</p>

<p>The fossil belongs to the <em>Wataria parvipora</em> forest, according to a press release from Hokkaido University whose Professor Toshihiro Yamada from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences led the study.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>“Wataria</em>&nbsp;is a wood-fossil, recognised by its distinctive growth rings, abundant parenchyma rays and lack of resin canals. In the 2000 metre square fossil site, these stumps accounted for 95 per cent of the tree remains, indicating that we discovered a forest predominantly of this species,” says Yamada.</p>

<p>Notably, the forest was first discovered in modern times during a severe drought in 1994 when around 450 fossilised tree stumps emerged from the water. While the majority of the stumps have since been submerged, scientists were able to successfully examine 137 of them and the surrounding leaves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The largest fossilised trunk found during the excavation process was around 137 centimetres in diameter.</p>

<p>According to local media reports citing the police and the fire department, three people were injured and at least one of them by a knife.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the victims</strong></h2>

<p>The three victims – a train conductor in his 20s and two male passengers&nbsp;in their 20s and 70s – were taken to the nearby hospital, said the authorities. However, officials said none of them have sustained any life-threatening injuries.</p>

<p>According to the Osaka Prefectural Police, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Kazuya Shimizu, was promptly apprehended on the station platform and arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shimizu also reportedly admitted to the stabbing and the police said he was carrying three knives at the time of the attack. The police are currently in the midst of investigating the motive.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Earlier incidents</strong></h2>

<p>Violent crime is said to be rare in Japan, which has a low murder rate and some of the world’s toughest gun laws.</p>

<h2><strong>A case worth studying</strong></h2>

<p>Japanese work culture often involves spending gruelling hours at the office and then evenings eating and drinking with colleagues which has made starting a family challenging, especially for female workers. Therefore, many women leave the workforce after giving birth to take care of the kids.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This is where Itochu Corp, Chief Executive Officer Masahiro Okafuji’s approach comes in. When Okafuji took the top job in the company in 2010, one of his priorities was to improve productivity so that the Japan-based company could compete against bigger rivals, said a report by Bloomberg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But despite contrary beliefs, in this case, increased productivity was not linked to spending long hours at the office. In fact, the Japanese company’s CEO banned working in the office after 8:00 pm (local time) and cancelled overtime, except for some rare cases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, security guards and human resources staff would take rounds of the Itochu’s office building in Tokyo, asking people to go home. Those who still insisted on finishing their work were told to come in early the next day to get it done and they would be paid extra.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Did it work?</strong></h2>

<p>The idea worked! Around 10 years or so later, the Japanese company reported over five times the profit per employee between 2010 and 2021, as per the report. Additionally, Itochu noted that the fertility rate among full-time employees doubled since Okafuji took over, with nearly two children per female employee by the end of March 31, 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We set out to boost productivity but had no idea it would have an impact on the birthrate,” Itochu’s executive vice president, Fumihiko Kobayashi told Bloomberg.</p>

<p>Notably, Japan’s&nbsp;current national <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-how-falling-birthrate-is-a-ticking-time-bomb-for-this-giant-economy-555368">fertility rate</a> of about 1.3 is far below the 2.1 required to maintain a stable population. Another change that was noted during this time was that more employees took maternity leave, had their kids and came back to work, reported Bloomberg.</p>

<p>It was found that the company’s late-night work ban eased the pressure on female employees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, after the pandemic Itochu also allowed employees to work from home two days a week. <p>Now, Japan is planning to launch the mission next year. Reports have mentioned that the country's space programme is one of the world's largest, and in October JAXA astronaut Koichi Wakata flew to the International Space Station as part of the Crew-5 mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a landmark verdict, the Japanese Supreme Court on Tuesday (July 11) ruled in favour of a transgender woman, saying restrictions put on using women’s toilets at her workplace were “unacceptable”.</p>

<h2><strong>What was the case about?</strong></h2>

<p>The case was filed by a woman in her 50s, who cannot be named for privacy reasons, against her employer, the Ministry of Economy and Trade. The official who was assigned male at birth, sued the government after she was told to use women’s toilets two floors below her office, as opposed to the ones closer to her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Tokyo District Court, in 2019, ruled in favour of the employee and called the restrictions unlawful. However, the decision was reversed in 2021 by the Tokyo High Court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The plaintiff said that being barred from using the female toilets near her “deeply hurt” her and violated the country’s law which protects state employees against loss or damage in the workplace.</p>

<p>The woman was diagnosed with gender dysphoria around 1999 when she was already a government employee. However, it was not until a decade later that she told her supervisor she wished to dress and work as a woman, and her request was approved.</p>

<h2><strong>The arguments</strong></h2>

<p>The government officials argued how their move was justified and cited a lack of “public understanding” toward transgender people for using the facilities of their declared gender.</p>

<p>However, the plaintiff’s team argued that no female employee had raised any concerns about sharing the toilet. It is also worth noting that the plaintiff has not changed her legal gender, but otherwise lives as a woman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Japan, transgender people can only legally change their gender if they have undergone gender reassignment surgery, while the current law effectively requires them to be surgically sterilised. The plaintiff told the court that she was unable to undergo the procedure due to health reasons.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Japan’s Supreme Court ruling considered landmark for LGBTQ+ rights</strong></h2>

<p>The verdict of this case was the first one that the Japanese top court delivered on the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and experts say that this could change how public and private sectors deal with sensitive questions on women-only spaces.</p>

<p>The decision has been seen as a step forward for the country’s LGBTQ+ community and their rights as Tokyo is the only G7 nation which does not provide legal protection for same-sex unions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In its ruling, the court found the decision to restrict the transgender woman from using nearby toilets was “extremely lacking in validity”. It added that the move “overly accommodated other employees and unjustly disregarded how the plaintiff might be disadvantaged.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We will carefully examine the ruling and take appropriate measures after consulting with the relevant ministries and agencies,” said the ministry, after the verdict, in a statement. It added that it will make efforts to respect the diversity of its staff.</p>

<p>The city’s secretary for the environment and ecology has been asked to form a multi-department team to design an action plan for the same. The government will take “decisive action” against the issue, said Lee.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The catering industry will be affected, but I am sure that they will understand that we’re forced to make a decision because of this unprecedented exercise.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The restrictions could also impact Japan’s economy and fishing communities as Tokyo exported $536 million worth of fishery products to its second-biggest importer, Hong Kong, according to Japanese government statistics.</p>

<p>Wang also reiterated that the IAEA report had “failed to fully reflect views from experts” who participated in the review.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China, the biggest market for Japan’s fisheries exports, recently announced a ban on the import of food products from 10 Japanese prefectures citing safety concerns and said it would step up testing for radioactive substances.</p>

<p>In a seal of approval on India's growth story, investment bank Goldman Sachs has said the country is poised to become the world's second-largest economy by 2075, surpassing the likes of Japan, Germany and the United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent report states that favourable demographics, innovation and technology, higher capital investment and rising worker productivity will drive India's growth. Currently, India is ranked the world's fifth-largest economy, trailing Germany, Japan, China and the US.</p>

<p>“Over the next two decades, the dependency ratio of India will be one of the lowest among regional economies,” said Goldman Sachs Research’s India economist, Santanu Sengupta.</p>

<p>“India has made more progress in innovation and technology than some may realise. Yes, the country has demographics on its side, but that’s not going to be the only driver of GDP. Innovation and increasing worker productivity are going to be important for the world’s fifth-biggest economy. In technical terms, that means greater output for each unit of labour and capital in India’s economy," said Sengupta.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report highlighted the Indian government's focus on infrastructure development in terms of roads, railways and other metrics may very well drive the growth locomotive. It argued that the time was ripe for the private sector to take the plunge and create capacity in manufacturing and services in order to generate more jobs and absorb the large labour force.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The risks associated&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The only concern that may stall India's growth would be if the labour force participation rate does not increase as projected, the report states.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The labour force participation rate in India has declined over the last 15 years," it noted, adding, "If you have more opportunities - especially for women because the women’s labour force participation rate is significantly lower than men’s - you can shore up your labour force participation rate, which can further increase your potential growth."</p>

<p>Net exports have also had a negative impact on India's growth but the report took an optimistic view and said the service exports had been&nbsp;cushioning current account balances.</p>

<h2><strong>India has age by its side</strong></h2>

<p>According to a&nbsp;<em>Time Magazine</em>&nbsp;report, nearly half the population of India (650 million people) is below the age of 25 - meaning the country won't be hitting its peak until 2065.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Adults aged 65 and older comprise only seven per cent of the population compared with 14 per cent in China and 18 per cent in the US. The share of Indians who are 65 and older is likely to remain under 20 per cent until 2063 and will not approach 30 per cent until 2100, under the UN’s medium variant projections.</p>

<p>The Goldman report is batting for this demography to come good which may propel India beyond the US, one of the biggest superpowers of the century gone by.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report, released on the same day it was announced that the Foxconn-Vedanta mega semiconductor production facility was off the table may come as a booster shot of confidence for the Indian&nbsp;government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Torrential rain in southwest Japan claimed the lives of at least two people, on Monday, with fears that the death toll could rise as several residents were asked to evacuate their houses.</p>

<p>A week of steady rain in the country has prompted the rivers to burst their banks and waterlogged earth to break into deadly landslides, including one that claimed the life of a 77-year-old woman.</p>

<p>As per the news agency AFP, a landslide in Kurume city, Fukuoka region, engulfed 10 people. Nine out of those survived, but a local man, aged around 70, lost his life in the incident, said the city's disaster management official.</p>

<p>According to the Yomiuri Shimbun and national broadcaster NHK, separately a male body was also found in Kurume, next to rice fields near a flooded river.</p>

<p>The Yomiuri said that in Hirokawa town in Fukuoka, the body of an elderly male was found inside a flooded vehicle trapped in an irrigation channel.</p>

<p>According to the officials, another woman was feared dead after she was last seen sticking to a car in rising floodwaters in the neighbouring Oita region.</p>

<p>By Monday afternoon, rain in the region slowed or stopped. But earlier in the day, more than 420,000 people were put under a top-level evacuation warning stating: "Your life is in danger, you need to take action immediately."</p>

<p>Around two million more in Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Saga, Yamaguchi and Oita were under a lower-level warning, urging them to evacuate if they were in hazardous areas.</p>

<p>Japan has five levels of evacuation orders, but people cannot be forced to leave their homes.</p>

<p>"Rain and wind gusts were very, very strong. There was lightning. It was so horrible," Takashi Onizuka, 62, of Tachiarai town near Kurume in Fukuoka told AFP.</p>

<p>The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) released a statement saying that the heavy downpours risked flooding and landslides across Fukuoka and Oita.</p>

<p>"This is the heaviest rain ever experienced" by the region, Satoshi Sugimoto of JMA's forecast division told reporters.</p>

<p>"The situation is such that lives are in danger and safety must be secured," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Japan PM Fumio Kishida's office releases statement</strong></h2>

<p>The prime minister's office said a task force had been set up in order to coordinate a response to the heavy rains.</p>

<p>"We have received reports that several rivers have flooded... and that landslides have occurred in various parts" of the country, top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.</p>

<p>"The government is doing its best to get a complete picture of the damage and taking measures under a policy of 'people's lives first'," he added.</p>

<p>He warned torrential rain was forecast across much of the country on Tuesday.</p>

<p>"If you feel your life is in danger, even just a little, don't hesitate to act," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the officials, in Fukuoka's Asakura City, the rain was thought to have reached a peak point but there were still fears about flooding.</p>

<p>According to scientists, climate change is heightening the risk of heavy rain in Japan and elsewhere, because a warmer atmosphere holds more water.</p>

<p>The weather agency said it had already been raining for more than a week in the region.</p>

<p>"The area is very wet due to intermittent rainfall for over a week," Yoshiyuki Toyoguchi, land ministry official in charge of rivers, told reporters.</p>

<p>"Even with a little rain, river levels tend to rise quickly, which will increase the risk of flooding."</p>
