According to local officials, snow has complicated rescue efforts after the earthquake, the shockwaves from which toppled buildings, sparked a major fire and triggered tsunami waves over a metre high.

Japan has since deployed thousands of rescue workers across the country. However, their efforts have been hampered by an estimated 1,000 landslides following the earthquake. To make matters worse, the region has also been blanketed in snow in the last two days.&nbsp;

The regional government has warned that continuous rain would lead to more landslides and heavy snow could cause more buildings to collapse under its weight.

The drop in temperature might also worsen conditions for more than 28,800 people in 404 government shelters.&nbsp;

As many as 2,000 people in several communities in the remote peninsula have been cut off due to damaged roads. Additionally, landslides have blocked aid vehicles carrying relief materials for areas suffering water and power outages.&nbsp;

The New Year started on a sombre note for Japan as on the afternoon of January 1, the powerful quake shook the Noto Peninsula, located on the west coast of the quake-prone country.

“The first priority has been to rescue people under the rubble, and to reach isolated communities,” said Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in an interview with NHK on Sunday.

He also spoke about how the military has sent small groups of troops to each of the isolated communities on foot. The government has also “deployed various police and fire department helicopters” to reach them, Kishida added.&nbsp;

The resulting spectrum showcased peaks associated with various elements, offering the most detailed X-ray spectrum of the object ever obtained.

Xtend, the second instrument, is an X-ray imager with a wide field of view. Capturing an X-ray image of Abell 2319, a rich galaxy cluster undergoing a major merger event, Xtend showcased its capability to observe areas 60 percent larger than the apparent size of the full moon.

Defence Minister Minoru Kihara released a statement on Thursday (Jan 4) informing that the elderly was rescued by Jennifer who is one of the specially trained canines deployed to the regions hardest hit by the quake.

Around 30,000 households in the Ishikawa region still remain without electricity. 89,800 homes in Ishikawa and two other regions are without water, while hundreds of people are living in government shelters.

"In the last 125 years, the Ishikawa Prefecture has seen about 30 earthquakes in the region, and they have not been major ones. In its entire documented history, this is the largest earthquake to have occurred on the west coast," Dr Kusala Rajendran, a national award-winning seismologist and a retired earth sciences professor from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, told WION.

The tremors of this earthquake reverberated as far as Tokyo, situated 300 km (185 miles) away.

But what makes Japan so prone to earthquakes?

Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates collide, and one slides beneath the other, resulting in the sudden release of energy.

"Japan is located on four major tectonic plates - the Pacific plate, North American plate, Philippine plate, and the Eurasian plate," Dr Rajendran said.

The existence of these four plates, grinding against each other, makes the region very complex.

However, the Noto earthquake serves as a testament to the cultivation of resilience. The impact could have been far more devastating if not for Japan's dedicated focus on mitigating disaster risks.

According to Dr Rajendran, the death toll has exceeded 100 solely because the earthquake occurred on the west coast. If it had happened on the east coast, where Tokyo is situated, measures could have been taken more effectively to handle or reduce the toll.&nbsp;

But in general, Japan heavily invests in preventive measures, using advanced early-warning systems that transmit alerts about significant earthquakes to mobile phones and TVs, occasionally interrupting live broadcasts.

In February 2022, Turkey faced a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that tragically claimed over 59,000 lives. The strikingly lower casualty count in Japan, despite experiencing a quake of comparable magnitude, highlights the effectiveness of Japan's progressive resilience-building efforts over time, distinguishing it from other nations.

By the afternoon of January 2, NHK's broadcasts displayed images of emergency responders assessing damage and residents receiving aid from relief workers.

Concurrently, amidst ongoing recovery efforts, many New Year traditions persisted. On Japanese Twitter (now X), the leading trending topic early on January 2 was the Hakone Ekiden, an annual long-distance race.

JR East, responsible for operating trains in the quake-affected regions, had its bullet-train lines operational again by 3 pm on January 2—less than 24 hours after the earthquake struck.

If there is a large earthquake in the Himalayan range, which Dr Rajendran says is overdue, the Delhi NCR region is going to face a big problem owing to the fact that most of its high-rise buildings and metro pillars stand on soft alluvial soil, which is a pile-up of sediments transported by river.

"The Japan earthquake is a reminder for everyone to make earthquake education&nbsp;and preparedness a priority," Dr Rajendran reminds with caution.

Captain Genki Miyamoto, 39, and his crew were preparing to take the plane - one of four stationed at the Coast Guard base at Haneda - back to the earthquake zone loaded with food and water.

The aircraft arrived back at Haneda from its second mission at 2.30 a.m. local time and left the hanger of the base again at 4.45 p.m., the official said.

The collision occurred at 5.47 p.m., authorities said.

In normal times, the Coast Guard tends to fly mid-morning when runways are less busy, the official said, adding the airport was "very busy" on the day of the accident.

Miyamoto, the pilot, also had a busy schedule.

As per the former attendant, all new crew members go through stringent evacuation and rescue training for nearly three weeks before they are permitted to serve on commercial flights. The training – which also teaches how to control the tone and volume of the voice so that the passengers can clearly hear you – is also repeated every year. 
 
"We go through a written exam, case study discussions and practical training using different scenarios, such as when the plane has to make a water landing or if there is fire on board. Maintenance staff are also involved in such training," added the former flight attendant, who worked for the airline 10 years ago. 
 
Also, all aircraft manufacturers need to prove that everyone aboard is able to evacuate the plane within 90 seconds from the planes so as to get internationally recognised.

<h2>Passengers say 'it was chaos'</h2>

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, a 17-year-old passenger - identified as Anton Deibe from Sweden - said, "The entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes." Deibe was flying with his parents and sister.

"The entire cabin was filled with smoke within minutes. We threw ourselves down on the floor. Then the emergency doors were opened and we threw ourselves at them. The smoke in the cabin stung like hell. It was&nbsp;hell. We have no idea where we are going so we just ran out into the field. It was chaos," the passenger added.&nbsp;

Another passenger said that he felt a very “warm sensation” on the left side of his face after the collision. &nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;59-year-old passenger Satoshi Yamake said he felt the flight had "tilted to the side and felt a big bump" just after the initial collision.

An unnamed passenger said that they felt a "bump, like the aircraft was colliding with something when touching down. I saw a spark outside the window and the cabin was filled with smoke".

Speaking to Kyodo News, one of the passengers said that he felt "a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed".

A female passenger stated that it was dark inside&nbsp;as the fire intensified after landing. "It was getting hot inside the plane, and I thought, to be honest, I wouldn't survive," she said while speaking to the Japanese broadcaster NHK.

As per another passenger, the plan of escaping the flight was made more difficult because only one set of doors was used. "An announcement said doors in the back and middle could not be opened. So everyone disembarked from the front," he said.&nbsp;
