Fifty Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) teams, special sniper units, drones and sharpshooters have been deployed ahead of Indian home minister Amit Shah’s three-day visit, to the northern Jammu and Kashmir state, which has witnessed a spate of civilian killings by the terrorists recently.

Notably, this will be the minister’s first visit to the Union Territory since its formation following the scrapping of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.

Shah will arrive in Srinagar on Saturday accompanied by the other senior officials of the home ministry, heads of most of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and the intelligence agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB).

Temporary checkpoints and new bunkers have been created in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley. For the first time since 1990s, women CRPF personnel have been deployed in the city centre, Lal Chowk, and other areas to frisk women.

The authorities have also suspended mobile internet in some parts of the Valley as a precautionary measure.

The visit comes in the backdrop of heightened terrorism activity in the state. Eleven civilians—most from the minority communities, including migrant labourers from other states—were shot down in targeted killings by the terrorists this month.

The visit also comes amidst ongoing anti-terror operations in Poonch forests, where nine Army personnel were killed, increasing use of drones by Pakistan to ferry weapons and explosives along the Line of Control border, and attacks on security establishments in the region.

As per the itinerary schedule, Shah will hold security review meetings with armed forces and will meet the families of those killed in the recent civilian killings.

Apart from that, Amit Shah will reportedly inaugurate a direct flight between Srinagar and Sharjah on the first day of his visit and lay foundation stones of two medical colleges.

Many houseboat owners were relieved to have the ATM nearby as they had to travel all the way to the main city, which is about 8.8 kilometres from Dal Lake, for withdrawing money. To boost horticulture production in the Kashmir valley, the government is bringing in new scientific techniques and methods to help farmers produce world-class fruits.

Horticulture is one of the main industries in the Union Territory and contributes around 8 per cent to the state’s GDP. Amongst them, Kashmiri apple production takes the biggest chunk of the sector.

Hence, in order to further boost the production and expand the market for Kashmiri apples across the globe, the government has been convincing farmers to set up high-density apple orchards.

Under the high-density farming technique, farmers use their land more efficiently, increasing yields without increasing the space devoted to planting. More importantly, high-density farming shows that farmers can make a living from farming without much, contrary to the common belief that successful farming is land-intensive.

“Our economy is based on horticulture and our Kashmiri apples are renowned all over the world. So to compete with the other countries in apple cultivation, the government has come up with the idea of setting up high-density orchards. It accommodates more plants and helps produce high-quality grade A apples,” said Javaid Ahmad Bhat, Chief Horticulture Officer, Budgam.

In Kashmir, Budgam district has been the centre of this transformation. Here, hundreds of acres of land, which was earlier used by brick kiln owners, have been now converted into apple orchards, bringing economic benefits to the them without taking a toll on the environment.

“In Budgam, several acres of land was earlier used for the production of bricks. We approached the owners and convinced them to grow apples. We helped them by providing a subsidy of up to 50 per cent. The harvest was much more valuable than what they were getting earlier. We have now successfully converted thousands of acres of lands that earlier spaced brick kiln to orchards. '' Bhat said. &nbsp;

They also helped us with pruning and cutting. I am happy that after retirement, I have taken to farming,” he said.

Pal’s success story has also inspired several other brick kiln owners who are now taking up apple cultivation.

A student of Minto Circle School, located in Srinagar’s Tengpora area,&nbsp;Mahira Khan&nbsp;had made a video asking India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ease the burden of homework for students of her age, especially in the pandemic.

After the video, the education department has now decided on new guidelines for virtual classes in the union territory. As per these revised guidelines, pre-primary school children will have to attend only 30 minutes of online classes and primary students will have 90 minutes long classes.

"Whereas, in context of the conclusions drawn and the parameters laid down by the special committee for considering calibrated easing of restrictions in limited and comparatively less sensitive geographical areas, the law enforcement agencies, while furnishing fresh inputs relating to the present security scenario in the UT of JK, have identified the districts of Ganderbal and Udhampur for lifting restrictions on high-speed mobile Internet connectivity on trial basis and these recommendations are found to be in conformity with the law laid down as also the conditions set by the special committee," it said. ]The Jammu and Kashmir administration had sought time to take instructions on the restoration of high-speed data services, saying a new Lt Governor has been appointed in the Union Territory. "Initial information revealed that banned Terrorist Organization&nbsp;Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) had activated a module of its members for carrying out terror activities in J&amp;K particularly in the Jammu region and in furtherance to this, delivery of funds was to take place in Jammu," police said.&nbsp;

Based on the information, a resident of Doda district, Mubashir Bhat, who is a part of the same module was allegedly tasked by handlers in Pakistan to visit Jammu and collect a consignment of Hawala money for use by terrorists and supporters.&nbsp;

Security forces have recovered a bag containing 1.5 lakh Indian rupees concealed in a tiffin box, police said.

"Initial questioning revealed that the money was sent by Haroon; self-styled commander of LeT from Pakistan to be delivered to the terrorists through their over ground workers in Doda," the statement read.&nbsp;

J&amp;K police have now registered a case and have started further investigation.&nbsp;

"The tourists should come, we welcome this decision. I think its the right decision but now, it's up to the tourists as there are protocols for them which they have to follow," says Mohd Hafiz Shalla, a tourism operator in Srinagar.

"In online classes, connectivity is a major problem &amp; we were unable to understand lectures. We are able to interact with our teacher well here which we couldn't in online classes," says Mahira Shabir, a 12th class student.&nbsp;

The Jammu and Kashmir police have killed two terrorists in yet another encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district today morning.

Three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were among four persons martyred&nbsp;in a brief shootout at Wangam area of Qaziabad Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Terrorists attacked 92 bn CRPF (a coy) party at Wangam at around 5:32 pm. In the attack, two CRPF men were martyred&nbsp;on the spot while two others suffered injuries. Both the injured were shifted to hospital where one succumbed on the way, they said.

The paramilitary troopers retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for around 10 minutes, an official said.

After the firing stopped one more body was spotted near the shootout site. It is yet to be ascertained whether the body is that of a civilian or someone else, they said.

PRO CRPF Pankaj Singh told terrorists attacked the CRPF party at Wangam. “In the attack, three CRPF men were martyred, two of them on the spot and another on way to the hospital,” he said, adding one more CRPF personnel has been hospitalized.

Regarding the body found near the spot, PRO said that there is a question mark about him as no weapon was found from him.

Soon after the attack, additional reinforcement of army, SOG and CRPF rushed to the spot and launched a massive search operation to trace out the fleeing terrorists.&nbsp;

It’s the second attack on security forces in Handwara earlier in Chanjmullha village where two terrorists were killed and four Army personnel including a CO and a police SI were&nbsp;martyred.&nbsp;
