Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci said they are wary of the speed of England's attack ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 final, joking that for him and his defensive partner Giorgio Chiellini it will be "youngsters against old men".

Juventus centre back Bonucci, 34, is set to make a record 18th appearance for Italy at the European Championships in the final, with club teammate Chiellini, 36, likely to be by his side.

The pair, who have 219 international caps between them, will face several much younger England attackers on Sunday, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, 19, Jadon Sancho, 21, Jack Grealish, 25, and Raheem Sterling, 26, set to play some part at Wembley.

"It is youngsters against old men," Bonucci told a news conference on Friday. "They have very strong attackers, we will need great attention towards them and the whole team.

"We know the difficulties they can give us and we will have to be careful about their speed.

"We (he and Chiellini) finish on the 12th (July) and meet again on the 14th to go on vacation together. This says it all about our relationship on and off the pitch."

Bonucci also had words of praise for the England defence, which has conceded just one goal all tournament en route to the final.

"England have a super defence, I already said this during the qualifying phase," Bonucci added. "They have an excellent midfield, and behind them are (Harry) Maguire and (John) Stones who had great seasons at Manchester United and City.

"We will need to give great attention as a defence and show a lot of cunning to score in the attack."

Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne also got on the scoresheet while at the back Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci were rarely troubled by Turkey's top scorer Burak Yilmaz.

ITALY 3-0 SWITZERLAND

Italy's strength was in their goals coming from multiple sources but little did Switzerland expect them to come from midfielder Manuel Locatelli who struck twice to add to his previous international tally of one goal.

Immobile scored again late on to give Italy back-to-back 3-0 wins as the Azzurri became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages.

ITALY 2-1 AUSTRIA (AFTER EXTRA TIME)

Underdogs Austria were in the knockout stage for the first time at the Euros and they gave Italy a scare by with an effort that was ruled out by VAR before they forced extra time as the match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

However, it gave Mancini the opportunity to test Plan B, which worked to perfection as substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina struck to book Italy's place in the quarter-finals.

<h3>QUARTER-FINAL</h3>

BELGIUM 1-2 ITALY

Belgium's "Golden Generation" presented Italy with a headache but a tense match against the top-ranked side in the world was settled with first-half goals from Nicolo Barella and a sublime curling effort from Lorenzo Insigne.

Romelu Lukaku's penalty halved the lead but Italy held on in the second half. The Azzurri's night was soured, however, when influential left-back Leonardo Spinazzola was taken off on a stretcher with a torn Achilles tendon that ended his tournament.

<h3>SEMI-FINAL</h3>

ITALY 1-1 SPAIN (ITALY WON 4-2 ON PENALTIES)

A resurgent Spain represented Italy's toughest test at the Euros as Luis Enrique's side dominated the midfield battle in a compelling 1-1 draw in which Spain substitute Alvaro Morata cancelled out Federico Chiesa's superb curling shot.

With nothing to separate the sides after 120 minutes, Italy held their nerve in the penalty shootout. Jorginho converted the winning spot-kick with a cool finish as the Azzurri extended their unbeaten run to 33 matches.

Football: Italy's road to the Euro 2020 final

When England players woke on Thursday morning, back at their secluded countryside training base St George's Park, they will have no doubt felt the afterglow of the wild celebrations of their Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark at Wembley.

But while across the nation debris was being cleared from parties into the early hours, England will have faced their own more sober reality check.

For all the outpouring of joy, euphoric refrains of "Football's Coming Home", and hyperbole including one pundit's call for a national holiday, England have not actually won anything yet.

In fact, the only thing "coming home" at this stage is England going back to Wembley for another match on Sunday in the final against Italy.

"It's feet back on the ground this morning. Everyone enjoyed it last night but now we have to come up against one of the most experienced teams in world&nbsp;football&nbsp;in Italy, it will be more difficult than last night," said former England winger and now BBC radio analyst Chris Waddle.

Roberto Mancini's side are unbeaten in 33 matches and reached the final after a penalty shoot-out win over Spain.

This is only England's second appearance in a major final but will be Italy's tenth.

For the pundits, ex-players unable to reach a Euro or World Cup final in their career, and the long-suffering England fans, the delight is obvious at the ending of a 55-year wait.

But one of England manager Gareth Southgate's most-used mantras in this tournament has been for his team to "make their own history" and not feel past burdens.

The approach has worked so far as England have avoided the pitfalls of so many other campaigns, beating old rivals Germany in the last 16 and not losing their nerve even when behind to Denmark and then going into extra-time.

ITALY'S 'WARRIORS'

Amid the high of Wednesday's celebrations, Southgate again injected focus.

"Finals are to be won. We’ve got to regroup, prepare properly, and recover because tonight’s taken a lot, emotionally, physically. Italy had that as well. They have an extra day to recover," he said.

"Italy are a very good side, I’ve thought that for the past couple of years. They’ve shown the outstanding form, they’ve got defensive warriors at the back who have been through everything," he said.

But there is more to Southgate than the usual coach's cliche of "taking each game as it comes" and he is well aware of the emotional import of the tournament.

"We’ve had three memorable games on the bounce now. We’ve said we want to create memories for our nation," he said.

And while it may take a little while to sink in, the abiding memory of this tournament for England will be defined not by beating Germany, nor putting four goals past Ukraine or the victory over Denmark, but by the outcome of Sunday's final.

Italy knows all about that: they lost their last two appearances in the Euro finals in 2000 and 2012 but sandwiched in between was their 2006 World Cup triumph.

Every Italian fan can remember Marcello Lippi's lineups from their successful campaign in Germany, but fewer will recall the defeated players from the Euro final losses.

The 60,000 crowd&nbsp;on Sunday will be overwhelmingly English, just as it was when the team won their only major title, the 1966 World Cup. The names of that team have never been forgotten.

Euro 2020: Reality is 'coming home' as England face Italy final

Italy reached the Euro 2020 final after edging&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;4-2 on penalties following a compelling 1-1 draw after extra time on Tuesday, completing a remarkable revival after failing to qualify for the last World Cup.

Jorginho coolly rolled the decisive kick past&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;keeper Unai Simon in the semi-final at Wembley after Alvaro Morata had been thwarted by a fine save from Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Dani Olmo had blasted his effort over the bar.

Italy's substitutes and coaching staff poured on to the pitch celebrate in front of their jubilant supporters behind the goal after Jorginho's kick booked their place in Sunday's final against either England or Denmark.

Roberto Mancini's side took the lead on the hour through a sensational curler from Federico Chiesa to complete a sweeping counter-attack which began with keeper Donnarumma catching a&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;cross and rolling the ball out.

Morata, who had been dropped from the starting lineup after beginning all&nbsp;Spain's previous games, equalised with 10 minutes left, calmly slotting into the bottom corner after bursting forward and exchanging a one-two with Olmo.

The goal was the latest twist in an eventful few weeks for Morata, who has been booed and even faced death threats from&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;supporters after a couple of poor showings, before redeeming himself with a crucial goal in the 5-3 win over Croatia.

But his tournament ended in dismay as his tame spotkick allowed Jorginho to clinch the win for Italy, continuing their sensational run, having earned a clean sweep of victories in the group stage and knocked out top-ranked Belgium in the quarter-finals.

"Spain&nbsp;were great, they have star players but we fought until the end and we did it," said Italy's Chiesa.

"When (Manuel) Locatelli missed the first penalty, everyone was calm saying we can do it and at the end our group helped us in the moment."

Mancini's side are looking to win the European Championship for the first time since 1968 and secure their first major trophy since winning the 2006 World Cup.

Italy avenged their shootout defeat to&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals and their resounding defeat in the Euro 2012 final, and completed a second straight European Championship victory over the Spaniards after their 2-0 win in the last 16 at Euro 2016.

Spain&nbsp;coach Luis Enrique could take nothing away from his side.

"They only wanted to get to penalties in extra time but we could have played for half an hour more. We can be happy and proud with what we've seen. We kept trying to play our way," he said.

"Everyone can feel proud of this team, we have many young players who have done things you couldn't imagine at their age and we were a team from start to finish."

SCORCHING ATMOSPHERE

Wembley's capacity was expanded to 60,000 and although coronavirus restrictions prevented fans from travelling abroad, the two countries' expatriate communities turned out to pack each end behind the goal and generate a scorching atmosphere, which heightened the sense of occasion between two titans of international football.

Italy made an intense start but&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;went on to dominate the first half, although Mancini's side came closest to scoring when Emerson clipped the bar right before halftime.

The second half was even more intense as gaps opened up at either end and&nbsp;Spain&nbsp;captain Sergio Busquets missed a great chance when he sent a shot just over the crossbar.

Chiesa then broke the deadlock by pouncing on a loose ball after a last-ditch tackle by Aymeric Laporte and curling into the net to score his second goal in the tournament after also netting at Wembley against Austria.

Italy could have put the game to bed, but Simon saved twice from Domenico Berardi and Morata made them pay.

Spain&nbsp;looked more likely to find a winner in the remaining minutes and in extra time but could not manage a second shootout victory after prevailing against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

Once again Morata was a crucial part of the story, but not in the way he would have wanted.

Euro 2020: Italy reach final to continue storming comeback from World Cup failure

Spain coach Luis Enrique believes Tuesday's Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy could hinge on who dominates possession.

Spain broke a tournament record for possession in their opening game against Sweden but had little to show for it as the game finished 0-0.

However, he said his team, rather like this new-look Italy side that have captured neutrals' hearts, were most comfortable with the ball at their feet.

"That's one of the first questions to settle. We are leaders in ball possession but they can also make use of it and enjoy the ball, that'll be the first battle we need to conquer," Luis Enrique told a news conference on Monday.

"They can adapt to not having the ball, they've done that in the tournament in certain stages but they're more comfortable with the ball and stronger with it.

"Our objective is clear, we want the ball, we need it, if we have to do something different we will adapt but we prefer to have possession of the ball."

Italy has played a big role in Luis Enrique's career as he got his first major coaching job with AS Roma a decade ago before going on to take charge of Celta Vigo, Barcelona, and the Spanish national side.

He has vivid memories of facing Italy as a player too, in particular when Mauro Tassotti broke his nose in a 1994 World Cup quarter-final defeat with a flying elbow that went unpunished on the day, although led to the striker being served an eight-game ban.

The coach laughed when the infamous moment was raised but said he had moved on from it.

"It's been so many years, and my nose is all the better for it. I've spoken to Tassotti since and he's an honest, good guy. It's formed part of our history, although I'm sure both of us would have preferred that moment to go differently," he said.

"I have a great memory of my time in Italy and the people so it's not relevant. This a great semi-final game where Spain and Italy have the chance to reach the final and the rest is just history."

Forward Pablo Sarabia is Spain's only absentee while Italy are likely to bring in Emerson at left-back for Leonardo Spinazzola, who tore his Achilles tendon in the quarter-final win over Belgium.

There will be few Italian or Spanish supporters at the match at Wembley due to England's coronavirus restrictions on visitors. Luis Enrique conceded it would be "strange" to have so few fans from the two teams in the crowd but said he would not "waste energy on things I can't control".

Euro 2020: Possession will be first battle against Italy, says coach Luis Enrique

The UEFA Euro 2020 is back&nbsp;with a semi-final fixture as Spain take on Italy at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday. The two teams have been great lately and should do their absolute best in this match.&nbsp;

Italy have generally surpassed assumptions at Euro 2020 and as of now are the lone team to have dominated every one of their matches. Italy staggered Belgium by a 2-1 edge in the quarterfinals and will need a comparative outcome in this game.&nbsp;

Spain, then again, were made life surprisingly difficult for by Switzerland over the course of the end of the week and will need a more extensive triumph in this match. Luis Enrique's charges can sneak up all of a sudden on their day however will be tried against Italy.&nbsp;

<h2>Head-to-Head</h2>

Spain enjoy a peripheral upper hand over Italy to the extent the head-to-head record is concerned and have won 12 matches out of a sum of 34 games played between the two groups. Italy have overseen nine triumphs against Spain with the other 13 games finishing off with impasses.&nbsp;

The last gathering between the two European heavyweights occurred in 2017 and finished in an agreeable 3-0 triumph for Spain. Italy have shown enormous improvement under Roberto Mancini and will be resolved to getting revenge.&nbsp;

<h2>Italy versus Spain&nbsp;</h2>

Leonardo Spinazzola endured a physical issue against Belgium and has been ruled out. Alessandro Florenzi is likewise conveying a thump right now and Giovanni Di Lorenzo will probably need to venture up once more in his absence.&nbsp;

Lorenzo Insigne glanced in heavenly touch in the quarter-last and is a sure starter on the left while Federico Chiesa could once more be liked over Domenico Berardi on the conservative, where he will hope to abuse any spaces abandoned by the attack of Spanish full-back Jordi Alba.&nbsp;

Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Emerson; Barella, Jorginho, Verratti; Chiesa, Immobile, Insigne&nbsp;

Pablo Sarabia is Spain's only worry right now and his muscle injury could imply that Dani Olmo is offered a chance in this game. The onus of safeguarding the backline and keeping his team on the front-foot when under lock and key will be on the shoulders of skipper and senior midfielder Sergio Busquets and is probably going to cooperate with Pedri and Koke against a solid Italian midfield.&nbsp;

Ferran Torres should clutch his spot on the right-wing, while Dani Olmo, who has established a serious impression so far in the Euros.&nbsp;

Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Simon; Azpilicueta, Laporte, Torres, Alba; Koke, Busquets, Pedri; Torres, Morata, Olmo&nbsp;

Mancini hailed his team for another impressive performance.

"I don’t think we suffered too much in any moment of the game. To beat a team like Belgium you need a great performance by everybody and this is exactly what happened today," he said.

"We scored two and we could have scored more. I think the victory is fully deserved. Spain are next but the more you go forward the most difficult it becomes. Tonight, however, we just want to think about our performance and our victory."

Italy completes troop pullout from Afghanistan

Doubters over Italy's chances of going all the way at Euro 2020 have pointed to their comfortable path to the quarter-finals, but that will all change on Friday, up against a Belgium side whose leading marksman knows the Italians all too well.

Romelu Lukaku enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 2020-21, voted player of the year in Italy's Serie A as Belgium forward fired Inter Milan to their first top-flight title in 11 years.

Next in his sights are club teammates and players used to try to stop him on a weekly basis in Serie A as Belgium and Italy, who have won four out of four games each at Euro 2020, go head to head in Munich in the last eight.

Italy are on a record unbeaten run of 31 matches, last losing back in September 2018 against Portugal. However, such a run has not convinced everyone, given Roberto Mancini's side have beaten lower-ranked opposition in Switzerland, Turkey, Wales, and Austria so far.

With Lukaku in town, spearheading the attack for the world's top-ranked team according to FIFA, Italy will have no such easy ride.

"We know Lukaku well because we also face him in Serie A," Italy and Napoli defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo told UEFA.com. "We know he is a great striker, he had a wonderful season with Inter.

"He is to be kept under observation, but Belgium have many strong players and it will be a great match.

"The further you go, the stronger teams you face, but the approach is always the same."

Lukaku's 24 league goals last season for Inter represents his second-best career return for a domestic campaign, but his chances of adding to his three Euro 2020 strikes so far could be affected by key injuries to two of his chief providers.

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, who made the joint-second most assists in the English Premier League last season, suffered an ankle injury in Belgium's 1-0 last-16 win over Portugal, while captain Eden Hazard limped off with a leg muscle problem.

Both could be fit for Friday's clash, but should either not make it, facing a defense who conceded their first goal in 19 hours and 28 minutes against Austria last Saturday, Lukaku could be in for a tough afternoon.

But those resolute Azzurri defenders know from experience that he should be underestimated at their peril.

Italy became a mask-free and low-risk coronavirus zone starting Monday. This declaration marks a milestone for the country, which was the first European country to be hit by the pandemic in February 2020.

For the first time since then, the country’s health ministry classified its 20 regions as “white” areas, suggesting low risk of transmission. Italy uses a colour-coded system to evaluate COVID-19 risks.

Essentially, masks are no longer mandatory in outdoor settings. This news brings relief to many for the country is witnessing a heatwave expected to touch temperatures of 40 degree Celsius (104 degree F) in southern parts.

When the country was hit by the pandemic, Italy became a symbol of the extent of COVID-19 crisis, where army trucks were seen transporting coffins and morgues were overflowed. Over the last few weeks, infections have plummeted tremendously.

As of Sunday, 17,572,505 people in the country had been vaccinated, representing roughly a third of the population.

Italy had barred travellers from the European Union, United States, Britain, Canada and Japan from entering the country. Recently, the government removed the quarantine requirement for vaccinated people and those who test negative for COVID-19.

Even then, Italian Health Minister Roberta Speranza urged the citizens to be “vigilant”, citing the new variants which are more infectious.

"It's an encouraging result, but caution and prudence is still needed, especially because of the new variants…The battle is not yet won”, AFP quoted Speranza as saying.

Starting November 2020, the country has witnessed multiple lockdowns to battle the second wave of COVID-19. But restrictions were related last month with the whole country marked as a “yellow” zone. Due to this, people enjoyed more freedoms but a curfew remained in place.

'Low-risk zone': Italy goes mask-free as COVID-19 cases continue to plummet

The last time a US secretary of state visited the Vatican, the diplomatic sparks flew and Pope Francis declined to receive Mike Pompeo.

When Antony Blinken meets the pope and top Vatican officials on Monday, the new secretary of state's visit will put relations between Washington and Holy See on a new footing.

It will also set the scene for a visit to the pope by Joe Biden, only the second Catholic US president, expected for October.

The visit follows a conference at which US Roman Catholic bishops voted to draft a statement on Communion that may admonish Catholic politicians, including Biden, who support abortion rights despite opposing the practice personally.

Pompeo's visit last September was widely seen as a diplomatic blunder.

He irked the Vatican before arriving, saying on Twitter and in an editorial that it was "endangering its moral authority" by continuing a bilateral deal with China over the appointment of bishops there.

Pompeo published the editorial in a conservative Catholic journal that has been highly critical of Pope Francis and whose editor in 2019 wrote a long critique titled "A Failing Papacy".

One Vatican official rebuked Pompeo for violating "one of the rules of diplomacy" by making public demands. Another said his request for an audience with the pope was denied because it was too close to the US presidential election and the Vatican did not want it used for domestic political purposes.

"Pompeo did an own goal on China. The way he broached it in such a brusque, arrogant way made it easier for the Vatican to justify the renewal of the deal," said Massimo Franco, a columnist for Italy's Corriere della Sera who has written extensively on US-Vatican relations.

"The Biden administration will be much more subtle in reminding the Vatican about freedom of religion in China," Franco told Reuters.

After NATO took a tough line on China at Biden's debut summit, Washington could press the Vatican to be more outspoken on human rights in China and Hong Kong, said Alberto Melloni, an Italian Church historian and advisor to the European Commission.

"The question is 'will the US let the Vatican be exempt from criticising China just because of its deal on the bishops'?" he told Reuters.

Climate Change

One of the main points of contention between the Vatican and the White House, while <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a> was US president, was climate change. Trump was dismissive of the problem as he dismantled climate policies and regulations on fossil fuels.

The pope criticised Trump's withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 Paris accord to limit global warming. The Vatican welcomed Biden's return to the accord.

Francis, who in May received Biden's climate envoy, Roman Catholic John Kerry, has urged nations to work together to save the planet.

"We see working together (with the Vatican) as an opportunity to raise countries' collective ambition and to address the climate crisis by raising and implementing national emissions reduction targets, for instance," said Philip Reeker, acting assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs.

The Vatican will host world religious leaders and scientists before the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November in Britain, which many expect the pope to attend.

In another scratchy moment, the pope criticised Trump's pledge to build a wall along the US-Mexican border as "not Christian". Trump said it was "disgraceful" for the pope to question his faith but later called him "a wonderful guy". They met at the Vatican in 2017.

Roberto Mancini urged Italy to put in a performance worthy of the "footballing Mecca" of Wembley when the Azzurri face Austria in the last 16 of Euro 2020 in London on Saturday.

Italy impressed in the group stages by winning all three games without conceding a goal to top Group A, extending their unbeaten run to 30 matches in all competitions.

They go into the clash against Austria, who finished second in Group C, as big favorites to progress to a quarter-final against Portugal or Belgium in Munich, but it will be their first game of the tournament outside of Rome.

"You always need to enjoy playing at Wembley, it is a pleasure because some players never get an opportunity to play in this stadium. It is a wonderful arena and the guys need to produce a big performance because that is what this stadium deserves," Mancini told a news conference.

"You want to be involved in matches in arenas like this. The players need to be happy to be playing at Wembley. When you play in a&nbsp;footballing Mecca like Wembley, you need to respect it and produce a big performance and I hope they do that tomorrow - in fact, I am sure they will."

Mancini has already given game time to 25 of the 26 players in his squad and the Italians impressed in a 1-0 win over Wales in their final group game despite the manager making eight changes to his starting line-up.

"Everyone has given me a selection headache because they have all played very well," Mancini said.

"We made those changes against Wales and the same went for when we brought on substitutes in the previous matches. It is great to be able to count on the players who are all fit and firing, and all fairly relaxed from a mental perspective. That could be an advantage for us."

There was much talk in the Italian media about whether the Italian players would take a knee ahead of the game against Austria, an anti-racism gesture taken by several teams, but defender Leonardo Bonucci said the squad is yet to decide.

"When we go back to the hotel, we have planned a meeting and will decide as a team," he said.

"That is what we should have done before Italy v Wales, and we will have a team meeting this evening to decide what we will do tomorrow."

When asked about it, Mancini replied: "The most important thing is one's freedom to choose."

The United States and&nbsp;China&nbsp;are discussing a possible meeting of US&nbsp;Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a G20 meet in Italy next week, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday citing people briefed on the talks.

The administration of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">US&nbsp;President Joe Biden</a> has also informed counterparts in Beijing that it would like Wendy Sherman, deputy secretary of state, to visit&nbsp;China&nbsp;over the summer, the newspaper said.

According to the British newspaper's report, the White House has also held preliminary internal discussions about sending Blinken or Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, to&nbsp;China&nbsp;later this year. A move that could set the stage for Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to hold a bilateral summit on the margins of the G20 leaders meeting in Rome in October.

Relations between the two nations have recently been particularly turbulent with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/joe-biden">US President Joe Biden</a> ordering an enquiry into the Coronavirus origins.

US, China discuss possible meeting of secretary of state, Chinese foreign minister: Report

Roberto Mancini has said it took "the end of the world" for him to become&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;coach but his side now appear to be in a brave new world following a classy 3-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday that propelled them into the Euro 2020 knockouts.

After laying down a marker with a stunning second-half display in their opener to beat Turkey 3-0,&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;matched that scoreline but produced an even more assured performance.

Manuel Locatelli was an unlikely figure to give&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;the lead in the first half when he started then finished off a sweeping attack down the right wing and then scored again after the break before striker Ciro Immobile adorned another magical night at the Stadio Olimpico by netting late on.

Locatelli, who had never scored twice in a game before, was the symbol of a side short on household names but bursting with talent which is making its mark at Euro 2020 after their miserable failure to qualify for the last World Cup.

Italy's limp playoff defeat to Sweden in November 2017 ensured they failed to reach a World Cup for the first time since 1958 and prompted much soul-searching, with coach Gian Piero Ventura painted as the scapegoat and booted out.

Mancini, a Premier League and Serie A winner with Manchester City and Inter Milan but who has often been criticised for being too defensive, was an unlikely figure to lead the revolution the country was crying out for, but he has proved an inspired choice.

Italy&nbsp;may have shed their old defence-first persona under previous coaches such as Antonio Conte, but Mancini has taken them to the next level, building a hyper-pressing team that suffocate opponents in their own half.

Mancini may have kept faith with seasoned gladiators such as Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, who have a combined age of 70 and were the only survivors of the defeat to Sweden who played against Switzerland, along with Immobile and Jorginho.

But his side also sparkles with players boasting courage and athleticism.

Their opening goal against Switzerland was made by a combination of skill, pace and quick-thinking from Domenico Berardi down the right flank, beating a Swiss defender by the byline before arrowing a low pass at the feet of Sassuolo team mate Locatelli, who had started the move.

Locatelli, who struck again with a deadly strike from outside the area, has performed so well that&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;have barely missed their one star name in Marco Verratti, who was forced to sit out both their opening games due to injury.

Berardi was a handful for the Swiss down the right wing all game while left back Leonardo Spinazzola, one of the best players against Turkey, was equally dangerous down the other flank, making&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;an unpredictable and terrifying side who became the first to book their place in the last 16.

No team will look forward to meeting them next.

Euro 2020: Dynamic Italy blazing a trail from ashes of World Cup failure

Trade unions warn about a "social tsunami", left-wing parties of a "massacre for employment", the imminent end of&nbsp;Italy's coronavirus freeze on layoffs is causing tensions in Mario Draghi's national unity government.

Supporters say the freeze, which is unique in Europe, saved thousands of jobs after the pandemic plunged&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;into a deep recession, but the European Union has been disparaging, and employers are angling for its end.

Companies were first banned from sacking workers under former premier Giuseppe Conte in February 2020, when a wave of COVID-19 sparked Europe's first nationwide lockdown in&nbsp;Italy. The measure was later extended.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/virus-battered-italy-faces-worst-recession-since-wwii-301977">Virus-battered Italy faces worst recession since WWII</a>

When Draghi took office in February this year, he said the government "should protect workers... but it would be a mistake to protect all economic activities equally", saying there must be a "choice".

The European Commission entered the fray this month, denouncing the ban on layoffs as "counterproductive" as it protects employees on long-term contracts but not those in more precarious jobs, notably women and young people.

It asserted that in France and Germany, which instead offered financial support for people whose hours were cut by struggling companies, the effects of the pandemic on employment have been less severe than in&nbsp;Italy.

Coronavirus cases are now on the wane and&nbsp;Italy's freeze is due to expire at the end of June for the biggest companies, notably in industry and construction, although small and medium-sized firms, particularly in services, have until the end of October.

The members of Draghi's coalition government, who rallied around the former European Central Bank chief after Conte's government collapsed, are divided on the subject.

The biggest party in parliament, the Five Star Movement, has echoed trade unions in calling for a further extension of the layoff ban for everyone, while far-right League leader Matteo Salvini wants companies to take back the "freedom to hire".

Labour Minister Andrea Orlando, from the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), last month raised the prospect of an extension under certain conditions until August, before back-tracking under pressure from employers.

'A million more unemployed'&nbsp;

The minister for economic development, Giancarlo Giorgetti, a member of the League, has instead proposed extending the freeze for the hardest-hit sectors, such as textiles.

The fear is that&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;could face a wave of redundancies when the ban ends.

"The most realistic estimates point to 70,000 to 100,000 layoffs, which is certainly not negligible, but is not enormous," Francesco Seghezzi, head of the Adapt Foundation, which specialises in research on employment, told AFP.

Trade unions fear the numbers could be much higher, warning of "a million more unemployed", while the Bank of&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;estimates 440,000 jobs were saved in 2020 thanks to the rule.

Despite the ban, there were 550,000 layoffs in&nbsp;Italy&nbsp;in 2020, as those related to disciplinary issues or the closure of companies were exempt.

There are also hundreds of thousands of workers in more precarious jobs whose contracts were not renewed.&nbsp;In total, almost a million jobs were lost last year in&nbsp;Italy.

The unemployment rate reached 10.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2021, the highest since the beginning of 2019. Among the 15-24 age group, it rose to 39.2 per cent for women and 32.7 per cent for men.

But the economy is picking up steam once again and some sectors such as manufacturing and construction are struggling to find staff owing to a lack of skilled recruits.

Almost 1.3 million jobs, most of them temporary, need to be filled between June and August, according to the Union of Chamber of Commerce (Unioncamere).

Confindustria,&nbsp;Italy's main employers' organisation, has forecast economic growth of around five per cent in 2021, a prediction shared by the Bank of&nbsp;Italy.

Confindustria president Carlo Bonomi believes the conditions are ripe for a "little economic miracle".

"The signs of economic recovery are so encouraging that the lifting of the ban on layoffs could have a less dramatic impact than initially feared," David Benassi, professor of sociology at the University of Milano-Bicocca, told AFP.

Trade unions warn about a "social tsunami", left-wing parties of a "massacre for employment", the imminent end of Italy's coronavirus freeze on layoffs is causing tensions in Mario Draghi's national unity government. Supporters say the freeze, which is unique in Europe, saved thousands of jobs after the pandemic plunged Italy into a deep recession, but the European Union has been disparaging, and employers are angling for its end. Companies were first banned from sacking workers under former premier Giuseppe Conte in February 2020, when a wave of COVID-19 sparked Europe's first nationwide lockdown in Italy. The measure was later extended. Also read | Virus-battered Italy faces worst recession since WWII When Draghi took office in February this year, he said the government "should protect workers... but it would be a mistake to protect all economic activities equally", saying there must be a "choice". The European Commission entered the fray this month, denouncing the ban on layoffs as "counterproductive" as it protects employees on long-term contracts but not those in more precarious jobs, notably women and young people. It asserted that in France and Germany, which instead offered financial support for people whose hours were cut by struggling companies, the effects of the pandemic on employment have been less severe than in Italy. Coronavirus cases are now on the wane and Italy's freeze is due to expire at the end of June for the biggest companies, notably in industry and construction, although small and medium-sized firms, particularly in services, have until the end of October. Also read | Italy's new government will overhaul Renzi labour reform, minister says The members of Draghi's coalition government, who rallied around the former European Central Bank chief after Conte's government collapsed, are divided on the subject. 'A million more unemployed' The minister for economic development, Giancarlo Giorgetti, a member of the League, has instead proposed extending the freeze for the hardest-hit sectors, such as textiles. Also read | Why COVID caused such suffering in Italy's wealthiest region The fear is that Italy could face a wave of redundancies when the ban ends. "The most realistic estimates point to 70,000 to 100,000 layoffs, which is certainly not negligible, but is not enormous," Francesco Seghezzi, head of the Adapt Foundation, which specialises in research on employment, told AFP. Trade unions fear the numbers could be much higher, warning of "a million more unemployed", while the Bank of Italy estimates 440,000 jobs were saved in 2020 thanks to the rule. Despite the ban, there were 550,000 layoffs in Italy in 2020, as those related to disciplinary issues or the closure of companies were exempt. Italy kicked off the European Championship in emphatic style on Friday as they delivered a commanding performance to sweep past toothless Turkey 3-0 in the Stadio Olimpico and stamp their early authority on Group A.

After a goalless first half, an own goal and strikes by Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne were just a reward for the home side, who played with relentless positivity from the start.

Their dispiriting failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup looked a distant memory as they stretched their unbeaten run to 28 matches in a buoyant atmosphere.

They were helped by a flat display from Turkey, who lost their fifth consecutive opening match of a European Championship finals and barely mustered a worthwhile attack all night.

"It was important to start well here in Rome and it is a joy for us and for all the Italians," said coach Roberto Mancini.

"We produced a good performance and I think we satisfied everyone, for the fans and all the Italians watching. But there are six games to go and there are a lot of good teams."

Switzerland and Wales, who meet in the group's second game in Baku on Saturday, always knew Italy was the group favorites but the size of their task has suddenly looked somewhat bigger.

STRONG START

After a build-up featuring a spine-tingling rendition of Nessun Dorma by opera singer Andrea Bocelli - channeling thoughts of Italia '90 - a spectacular fireworks display and a typically raucous rendition of Italy's national anthem, the 16,000-strong crowd was in fine voice by kick-off.

They were given plenty to cheer too as Italy made all the early running against a Turkish team happy to sit deep and invite pressure.

However, Mancini’s side was left frustrated in their efforts to break through the wall of red shirts.

Giorgio Chiellini had a header tipped over with a spectacular one-handed save by Ugurcan Cakir and Immobile nodded across wide as Italy went in at the break with 14 attempts to none from Turkey - but without a goal.

They kept probing and their patience was rewarded when Berardi fired a cross into the six-yard box where Demiral chested the ball into the net - the first time in a European Championship that the tournament’s opening goal was an own goal.

The ever-dangerous Leonardo Spinazzola had a shot beaten away and Manuel Locatelli’s low effort was palmed wide before Immobile doubled Italy's lead by pouncing on Cakir’s parry from another Spinazzola effort to neatly knock in the rebound.

The Azzurri’s dominance was rewarded again when Immobile threaded a pass to Insigne, who placed a precise finish into the bottom corner with 11 minutes remaining.

It marked the first time Italy had scored three goals in a match at the Euros at their 39th attempt and capped a perfect start.

Mancini had told his players they should enjoy themselves and seek to entertain and that was exactly what they did for a jubilant home crowd.

There was only gloom in the visiting camp as veteran coach Senol Gunes, who led Turkey to third place at the 2002 World Cup, apologized for the performance.

"I was expecting a better game, and I am disappointed and we are sorry," he said. "Italy totally controlled the game."

Italy has created a cybersecurity agency. The step has come after the country's Prime Minister Mario Draghi warned that Europe needed to protect itself from Russian interference. The approval for the new agency was given in a meeting late on Thursday.

The cybersecurity agency will need to "protect national interests and the resilience of services and essential functions of the State from cyber threats," said the government in a statement.

On May 25, Draghi spoke in Brussels following a European Union summi and said that urgent action was needed against digital threats.

"We need to strengthen ourselves, we need to strengthen ourselves a lot, especially in terms of cybersecurity, all of us, at national level and at EU level... because the level of [Russian] interference both with spies and with manipulation of the web has become truly alarming," he said.

Earlier this year, an Italian navy captain was caught red-handed by police while selling confidential military documents, leaked from his computer, to a Russian embassy official.

The new cybersecurity agency was tasked with developing strategies to prevent, monitor, detect and mitigate cyber attacks and stepping up national defences.

The agency, which according to media reports will employ around 300 people, will be controlled by Draghi and his security services advisor, ex-police chief Franco Gabrielli. The new head of cybersecurity agency is yet to be appointed

Draghi, a former European Central Bank chief, has been quite active on intelligence matters since he was appointed in February to lead a national unity government.&nbsp;

Last month, he named Elisabetta Belloni, a career diplomat, to lead Italy's secret services. She is the first woman to occupy the post.&nbsp;

The Corriere della Sera named Roberto Baldoni, a computer engineering professor who already works on cybersecurity with intelligence services, and Nunzia Ciardi, head of the internet police, as the top candidates.

Italy extended Sunday an entry ban for people coming from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, as a continued precaution against the more transmissible <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">coronavirus</a> variant first detected in India.

The ban, which does not apply to Italian citizens, was introduced in late April and was due to expire on Sunday. It was prolonged until June 21, a spokesman for Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in a statement.&nbsp;

An Italian judge ruled late on Saturday that three men detained over a cable car crash that killed 14 people in northern Italy could leave prison, with one being placed under house arrest, Italian media reported.

The chief prosecutor of the city of Verbania, Olimpia Bossi, confirmed the judge`s ruling in comments made to reporters on RAI television.

Last Sunday the gondola on a cable way connecting the town of Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, to the nearby Mottarone mountain plunged to the ground, killing all aboard apart from a five-year-old Israeli boy who remains in hospital.

Italian prosecutors have opened an investigation into suspected involuntary manslaughter and negligence.

On Wednesday police arrested the three men.

According to the daily La Stampa website, the judge on Saturday ruled there were no grounds for keeping the three men in jail since they could not run away and there was no risk of evidence being tampered with.

Another sinkhole opened up in Italy’s Rome, causing damage to two cars that were parked on the side of the road.

A six-meter-deep and 20-meter-long hole suddenly appeared at the side of a road in the Torpignattara district. While nobody was injured in this incident, a Mercedes SUV and a smart car fell into the pit.

An initial investigation has revealed that the sinkhole might have been caused by water leakage in a garage that ran under the streets, the local media reported.

Italy's transport minister has vowed to find the cause of the deadly cable-car accident that took 14 lives. Minister Enrico Giovannini visited the accident site on Monday and announced a probe into the incident.

A five-year-old boy is the sole survivor of the horrific accident which took place in northern Italy. The boy is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

The cable car crashed to the ground after a cable broke, according to first reports, while one member of the emergency services said the security brake failed to function.

The accident came at the start of Italy's much-anticipated reopening to tourists after coronavirus closures, and elicited condolences from around the world.

But it also drew condemnation from some commentators over weak security controls in the country's transportation sector, even though the investigations are still at an early stage.

Transport Minister Enrico Giovannini arrived in the town of Stresa, from where the cable car started, to meet with local and regional authorities.

Prosecutors opened an investigation Sunday into potential charges of involuntary manslaughter, while a government-commissioned inquiry by technical experts is also underway.

The accident was the first involving a cable car in Italy since 1998, when a low-flying US military jet severed a cable at a ski resort, killing 20 people.

"There are various aspects of this affair that will certainly be clarified," Giovannini said in a short press conference, without taking questions.&nbsp;

Italy`s entry, glam rock band Maneskin, won the Eurovision song contest, as the world`s most popular live music event was held in the Netherlands after being cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Italian`s raucous "Zitti E Buoni" beat out professional jury favourites Switzerland and France, sweeping the public vote which counts for half the points. Victoria de Angelis of Maneskin told a press conference the win was an important boost for Italy, one of the European countries worst hit by COVID-19.

"This is a message of hope after this hard year we’ve been through," she said. Maneskin`s rock song is unlike the kitschy pop Eurovision is known for, but their singer said their popularity showed the contest also looks at musical quality.

"That prize shows that this is not (a) cheesy event. This is a musical event," Damiano David told journalists. Italy was the favourite with bookmakers and fans before the contest. Eurovision blogger William Lee Adams said its "punch in your face" song seemed the perfect anthem for European fans who have been stuck in lockdown.

"After this past year where we`ve been trapped at home I think a lot of people want that feeling of being at a party and that`s what they`re giving," he said. A limited audience of 3,500 attended the concert venue in Rotterdam to watch the performances after undergoing stringent testing for COVID-19.

Because of the travel restrictions, most fans present were Dutch and they missed the usually international ambience of the festival.
"What I don`t really like is that there are no international persons here. Because it`s really the once in the year that you meet up with all your international friends," Dutch fan Patrick, who did not give his last name, told Reuters outside the venue.

Despite the precautions, several COVID-19 infections were reported during rehearsals and the semi-finals. Iceland's entry Dadi on Gagnamagnid were not able to perform live during the finals after a band member tested positive for COVID-19. The 2019 winner Duncan Laurence also tested positive. For both performances, the organisation used pre-recorded backup versions of the songs.

Most Eurovision fans outside the Netherlands watched from home, and many reached out to friends and online communities to celebrate the event.

The Netherlands has hosted the 65th edition of the contest, which draws a television audience of about 200 million after Dutch singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence won the 2019 contest in Tel Aviv with the song "Arcade".

The accident took place near the town of Stresa, which is on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the Piedmont region.

As of now, 13&nbsp;people have been declared dead and two other people, who were injured, have been rushed to a pediatric hospital in the city of Turin, emergency services reported. The two surviving kids are aged nine and five.

According to an initial investigation, there may have been a broken cable at the top of the system which would have led to the cable car falling down.

The cabin of the cable car had 11 people, out of which two were children below the age of 10. The picture posted by Italy’s emergency services shows a cable car mangled in broken tree branches and cable.

More than 9.85 million people in Italy have received two doses of a coronavirus vaccine, according to government figures, representing 16.6 percent of the 60 million-strong population.&nbsp;

Two-thirds of the doses administered so far have been given to those aged over 60.

Since April 26 Italy has been cautiously relaxing months-long coronavirus restrictions, with bars and restaurants now serving customers outdoors.&nbsp;

The latest data has been promising, with health authorities on Saturday reporting 125 Covid deaths over the past 24 hours -- three times less than a month ago.&nbsp;

The positivity rate of some 300,000 Covid tests carried out over the same period has meanwhile dropped to 1.6 percent, the lowest in 2021.
