A six-year-old boy, who was the sole survivor of a cable car crash, must be returned to Italy, ruled a judge in Israel. He has got embroiled in a bitter custody battle.

The child, Eitan Biran, lost his parents, who were Israeli nationals living in Italy, and two-year-old brother in the aerial tramway crash in northern Italy in May.

The expansion of foreign mosquito species as potential vectors of diseases of public health relevance has caused considerable worry in Europe in recent decades.

Aside from the well-known tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, another species of this genus, Aedes koreicus, is expanding throughout Europe.

This species is endemic to East Asia (Japan, Korea, China, and Russia) and was first documented in Europe in 2008, in the industrial zone of Maasmechelen, Belgium.

An paper published last week in the scientific journal Parasites & Vectors claimed to have proof that the dangerous mosquitos have been spreading toward southwest Italy since they were found in the north in 2011.

The study reveals a hardy "alien species" of mosquito that "tolerates low temperatures and prefers mountain regions" has made its home in the plains and foothills of Italy's northern Lombardy region.

Researchers discovered 6,000 mosquito larvae in Bergamo, Italy's Lombardy Region, of which 50 belonged to an alien species.

Describing the mosquitos as a "potential vector of nematodes and viruses," the article warned that their presence "has recently been reported in many regions of Europe," and that in Italy, they "are now spreading towards the southwest of the country."

The unintentional introduction of alien species of animals and plants outside their native ranges by humans is a phenomena that is becoming more common as a result of climate change and the movement of commodities and people.

A mandate for all workers in Italy to show a government-issued COVID-19 pass has come into force, triggering protests at key ports and fears of disruption.

As per the new guidelines, anyone who is on a payroll, both in the public and private sectors, must have a 'green pass' with a QR code as proof of either full vaccination, recent recovery from infection or a negative test.

Also, employees who go to work without a pass can be fined up to 1,500 euros and can also face suspension without pay. Employers could also face fines if they allow staff to work without it.

More than 85 per cent of Italians over the age of 12 have received at least one jab, qualifying for the pass. Among those who have not been vaccinated, a minority say they either oppose the idea or are fearful.

Protesters massed at some of Italy's major ports Friday as thousands took to the streets against the introduction of one of the world's toughest Covid pass regimes.

The government is braced for widespread disruption by Italians angry at the extension of the coronavirus "Green Pass" to all workers, after a demonstration last weekend sparked violent clashes in Rome.

From Friday, all workers must show a Green Pass offering proof of vaccination, recent recovery from COVID-19 or a negative test -- or face being declared absent without pay.

More than 85 percent of Italians over the age of 12 have received at least one jab, thus automatically qualifying for the pass.

Among those who have not been vaccinated, a minority say they either oppose the idea or are fearful. Some foreigners have also reported difficulties getting the jab, including undocumented workers.

Ahead of the extension of the Green Pass to workplaces, more than 560,000 certificates were downloaded on Wednesday and around 860,000 Thursday, according to government data.

Protests and blockades greet new Italy Covid rules

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi will host a special summit of the Group of 20 major economies on Tuesday to discuss Afghanistan, as worries grow about a looming humanitarian disaster following the Taliban's return to power.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan on August 15, the country - already struggling with drought and severe poverty after decades of war - has seen its economy all but collapse, raising the spectre of an exodus of refugees.

The video conference, which is due to start at 1 pm (1100 GMT), will focus on aid needs, concerns over security and ways of guaranteeing safe passage abroad for thousands of Western-allied Afghans still in the country.

"Providing humanitarian support is urgent for the most vulnerable groups, especially women and children, with winter arriving," said an official with knowledge of the G20 agenda.

The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is due to join the summit, underlining the central role given to the United Nations in tackling the crisis - in part because many countries don't want to establish direct relations with the Taliban.

Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the G20, has worked hard to set up the meeting in the face of highly divergent views within the disparate group on how to deal with Afghanistan after the chaotic US withdrawal from Kabul.

"The main problem is that Western countries want to put their finger on the way the Taliban run the country, how they treat women for example, while China and Russia on the other hand have a non-interference foreign policy," said a diplomatic source close to the matter.

China has publicly demanded that economic sanctions on Afghanistan be lifted and that billions of dollars in Afghan international assets be unfrozen and handed back to Kabul. It was not clear if this would even be discussed on Tuesday.

While US President Joe Biden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Europe's G20 leaders were expected to take part in the meeting, Chinese media reported that President Xi Jinping would not participate. It was also not clear if Russian President Vladimir Putin would dial in.

Afghanistan's neighbours Pakistan and Iran have not been invited to the virtual call, but Qatar, which has played a key role as an interlocutor between the Taliban and the West, will join the discussions, a diplomatic source said.

The virtual summit comes just days after senior US and Taliban officials met in Qatar for their first face-to-face meeting since the hardline group retook power.

Tuesday's meeting comes less than three weeks before the formal G20 leaders summit in Rome on Oct 30-31, which is due to focus on climate change, the global economic recovery, tackling malnutrition and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tuesday's meeting comes less than three weeks before the formal G20 leaders summit in Rome on Oct 30-31, which is due to focus on climate change, the global economic recovery, tackling malnutrition and the COVID-19 pandemic.

After over a year of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, discos and nightclubs in Italy have reopened, following a specific decree by the country's cabinet.

Discos and nightclubs have remained shut since the first lockdown in Italy declared in spring 2020, and Monday's reopening would mark the country's latest step to bring back life to normal in terms of leisure activities, reports Xinhua news agency.

The move was authorised by a specific decree unanimously passed by Prime Minister Mario Draghi's cabinet on October 7, which also loosened anti-pandemic rules for other cultural and sports venues further.

More specifically, discos and nightclubs will now be allowed to operate to 50 per cent of their capacity indoors, and to 75 per cent outdoors, according to the decree.

Theatresand cinemas will start operating at full capacity, after having been allowed to fill up to 50 per cent of their seats since summer.

Sports venues including stadiums can now operate to 60 per cent indoors and to 75 per cent outdoors.

All new rules will apply to the so-called "white-zone" areas, those where the virus circulation is the lowest, and the related anti-Covid restrictions the fewest.

Since October 9, the whole country has been in the white zone, and considered at low risk of infection by the Health Ministry.

Only people holding their Green Pass, the certificate showing the holder has been vaccinated, tested negative within the past 48 hours, or recovered from COVID-19 , will be admitted to any of the above mentioned venues.

To ensure better safety, all discos and clubs will be required to have ventilation systems not using air re-circulation in their indoor areas.

Nicolo Barella’s thunderous strike and a penalty converted by Domenico Berardi earned hosts Italy a 2-1 victory over Belgium on Sunday and third place in this year’s Nations League.

It offered some consolation for the European champions, whose semi-final loss to Spain in Milan on Wednesday ended their record 37-match unbeaten run.

They returned to winning ways as Barella volleyed a poor corner clearance into the net one minute into the second half and Berardi added the second from the spot in the 65th minute, after Timothy Castagne had brought down the tricky Federico Chiesa.

Belgium claimed a consolation in the 86th minute when substitute Charles De Ketelaere finished off a quick counter- attack.

Belgium, who were without Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku and only brought on Kevin De Bruyne in the second half, hit the woodwork three times but were outplayed for large portions of the match by their hosts at the Juventus Stadium.

"Today we played very well, we were excellent. We have different solutions and quality in midfield, today they did well," Italy coach Roberto Mancini told RAI television.

Early chances for Berardi and Giacomo Raspadori were dealt with by the Belgian defence before Alexis Saelemaekers, who plays in Serie A with AC Milan, slammed a shot against the Italian crossbar in the 28th minute.

But immediately after the break, the Belgians fell behind to Barella’s snap effort, cleanly hit after a clearing header from a corner fell perfectly into his path.

Michy Batshuayi then had an effort come back off the woodwork as Belgium came close to a 60th minute equaliser but fell 2-0 behind when Castagne mistimed a tackle on Chiesa to offer Italy a chance to extend their lead from the penalty spot. Berardi’s kick squeezed past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Toby Alderweireld then proved an unlikely attacking threat with two efforts that brought out fine stops from Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before Yannick Carrasco smashed a curling shot against the Italian post in the final 10 minutes.

Courtois’ quick clearance set up Belgium’s goal with De Bruyne passing to the youthful De Ketelaere to squeeze it past Donnarumma from close range, but it came too late to offer a dramatic finish to the game.

"We had a lot of younger players today and they did decently," De Bruyne said. "It was good for them to play against a team of Italy's quality."

Italy has started administering COVID-19 booster shots to people over the age of 60, just 24 hours after the procedure was authorised by the country's Health Ministry.

The decision followed the official green light earlier this month by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which stated the booster shot could be considered for all people over 18 after six months from their second dose, reports Xinhua news agency.

"In the light of EMA's latest deliberation, we can go ahead with the third vaccine dose to people of all ages with a fragile immune system and to all people over 60, always six months after the second dose," the Ministry said on Saturday.

In September, Italy had started administering third doses -- of either Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccines -- to immuno-compromised people such as transplant patients, elderly people over 80 and residents in care homes, and healthcare workers.

The third dose will be offered as an option, since vaccination against coronavirus remains strongly recommended but not mandatory in Italy.

Meanwhile, the pandemic situation appeared "under control," and the curve of coronavirus cases kept decreasing gradually, according to the latest weekly monitoring by the country's National Health Institute (ISS) updated to October 3.

The incidence stood at 34 cases per every 100,000 inhabitants.

The data for hospital bed occupancy were also encouraging, according to Giovanni Rezza, Director of the Infectious Diseases Department at the ISS.

"We register a 4.9 per cent and 4.2 per cent of bed occupancy in normal COVID-19 wards and intensive care units, respectively, which is well below the critical thresholds," Rezza explained in a video statement.

So far, the vaccination campaign in Italy has reached 79.9 per cent of the target population (over 12), with over 43 million people fully immunised, official data showed.

To date, Italy has registered 4,698,038 COVID-19 cases, with 131,274 deaths and over 4.4 million recoveries.

Climate change has taken centrestage these days. After natural disasters hit the world badly in 2020, an exhibition has been organised by climate activists in Milan and Italy to spark conversation about the climate crisis.

Exhibition uses art as means to spark conversation on climate change

Climate activist Greta Thunberg had some strong but sceptical words as she denounced long unending climate negotiations over decades 'blah, blah, blah'. She was speaking at climate talks in Italy.

"Thirty years of blah, blah, blah," Thunberg told the opening session of a Youth4Climate event on Tuesday.

Thousands of young activists have gathered in Milan this week from about 190 countries. They are due to engage with policymakers to hammer out prosposals for solutions to climate issues.

"So-called leaders have cherry picked young people to meetings like this to pretend they are listening to us, but they are not listening," Thunberg said.

"There is no planet B ... Change is not only possible but necessary, but not if we go on like we have until today."

In August, United Nations released a report that has exacerbated fears that climate change is worsening. The report has said that the situation was dangerously close to spiralling out of control.

The youth activists, who fought to get climate change to the top of the global agenda years after leaders at the 1992 Rio Summit in Brazil pledged to tackle environmental problems, are being challenged to help come up with the solutions ahead of the COP26 United Nations summit in November.

Their proposals will be vetted by climate and energy ministers gathering at the same venue for their pre-COP26 meeting, and some will find their way to the Glasgow summit.

The meetings come as soaring energy prices on world markets stoke fears of a popular backlash against climate reform.

The UN COP26 conference aims to secure more ambitious climate action from the nearly 200 countries who signed the 2015 Paris Agreement and agreed to try to limit human-caused global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

"Young people need to start getting involved in the actual negotiations," said Rose Kobusinge, a youth delegate from Uganda. "We want 1.5 (degrees) and we won’t go beyond that."

A bronze statue of a woman from a 19th-century poem which appeared to be dressed scantily has triggered a sexism row in Italy.

The sculpture, which portrays the woman in a transparent dress, was unveiled in the southern town of Sapri on Saturday during an event attended by prominent politicians, including Italy’s former prime minister Giuseppe Conte.

The statue, which portrays a woman in a transparent dress with one arm over her breasts, was established as a tribute to La Spigolatrice di Sapri (The Gleaner of Sapri), written by Luigi Mercantini in 1857.

Many women politicians criticised the statue for depicting “women as a sexual body.”

Male chauvinism is one of the evils of Italy,” Laura Boldrini, a member of the Chamber of Deputies from the centre-left Democratic Party, said on Twitter, adding that the statue “was an offence to women and to the history it should celebrate.”

A group of female politicians from the Democratic Party's Palermo unit called for the statue to be demolished.

“Once again, we have to suffer the humiliation of seeing ourselves represented in the form of a sexualised body, devoid of soul and without any connection with the social and political issues of the story,” they said in a statement.

“This statue of the Gleaner says nothing about the self-determination of the woman who chose not to go to work in order to stand up against the Bourbon oppressor,” she said on Twitter.

Unfazed by the criticism, the mayor of Sapri, Antonio Gentile, staunchly defended the statue on Facebook saying it was “made with skill and impeccable interpretation” by the artist Emanuele Stifano, and that his city was “not willing to question its values, principles and traditions”.

Gentile added that the artist “took advantage of the sea breeze to highlight the body” and that the statute was intended to “represent an ideal of a woman, evoke her pride, the awakening of a consciousness”.

The design, he added, had been approved by the authorities.

The poem is based on the story of a failed expedition against the Kingdom of Naples by Carlo Pisacane, one of the first Italian socialist thinkers.

It is written from the point of view of a female gleaner —someone who collected grain left in fields by harvesters.

The gleaner leaves the job for the expedition against the Kingdom of Naples, which led to 300 deaths.

Many women politicians criticised the statue for depicting “women as a sexual body.” Also read | Hell breaks loose as Lancet describes women as 'bodies with vaginas' “How can even institutions accept the representation of women as a sexualised body?
