<p>The most breathtaking capture of the timelapse video was the green and purple auroras which had lit up the night sky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Auroras, which are commonly called as northern lights or southern lights, are created by the collision of the Sun's charged particles, which is called the solar wind, with the atoms of oxygen and nitrogen which are present in the atmosphere of the Earth that create the glowing light.</p>

<p>There have been intense auroras sighted this year because of solar maximum which happens when the sun reaches peak solar activity in its 11-year cycle.&nbsp;</p>

<p>World's first study on common food aromas may help scientists understand why astronauts report that meals taste bland in space even as they struggle for their normal nutritional intake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists from RMIT University have led a study, which was published on Tuesday (Jul 16) in the International Journal of Food Science and Technology.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Previous astronauts or space travellers have reported that food doesn’t taste the same in space as it does on Earth," first author Grace Loke, a PhD candidate at RMIT, told COSMOS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Imagine having your meals pre-planned months ahead because they tasted good on Earth, only to dislike them in space. Usually, flavour is lost," Loke added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This research serves the purpose of how changes can be implemented in order to improve the diets of isolated people. Not just astronauts, the research might help people including nursing home residents by personalising aromas to enhance the flavour of their food.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the study, the researchers examined how the participants perceived&nbsp;vanilla and almond extracts. They also studied how lemon essential oil changed from everyday Earth settings to the conditions on the International Space Station (ISS).&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by phys.org, lead researcher Dr Julia Low from the School of Science said vanilla and almond aromas were more intense in the ISS-simulated environment. Meanwhile, the lemon scent remained unchanged.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the researchers, benzaldehyde, which is a sweet chemical in the aromas of vanilla and almond, could explain the change in perceptions. Besides, an individual's sensitivity to a particular smell can also be the reason.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers also studied the phenomenon of fluid shift and complemented results from other studies based on eating experiences in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study mentioned that fluid moves from the lower to the higher regions of the body while one is weightless, causing swelling in the face and congestion in the nose. This eventually impacts taste and smell. However, these symptoms vanish a few weeks after entering the space station in most cases.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Astronauts are still not enjoying their food even after fluid shift effects have gone, suggesting that there's something more to this," Low said.</p>

First-of-a-kind study investigates why food tastes bland in space

<p>The first two astronauts to fly Boeing's Starliner capsule said from the International Space Station on Wednesday (July 10) that they were confident in the spacecraft's ability to return them home whenever the company and NASA fix an array of thruster issues that have kept them in space far longer than expected.</p>

<p>"We're absolutely confident," Wilmore told reporters. "That mantra you've heard, failure is not an option."</p>

<p>Russia has announced a timeline for creating the four-module core of its new orbital space station by 2030 as the International Space Station (ISS) approaches the end of its operational life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Roscosmos space agency earlier on Tuesday reported that key contracts had been signed for building a Russian space station. Yuri Borisov, who is the head of Roscosmos, signed off on the timetable with the directors of 19 enterprises involved in creating the new station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Interfax reported that Borisov said in televised remarks that Russia cannot allow a pause in its piloted space programme, considering the condition of the ISS.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA has announced to give SpaceX a $843 million contract to destroy the International Space Station (ISS) and land it safely back on Earth. The deorbit vehicle designed by SpaceX will be used to push ISS out of its orbit after 2030 when its operational life ends.</p>

<p>The football field-sized space station will crash into the ocean after travelling at a speed of over 17,000 mph (27,500 km/h) in Earth's atmosphere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ISS was first launched in 1998 and has been operated by space agencies in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Russia, all of which are responsible for its safe deorbiting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are letting the data drive our decision making relative to managing the small helium system leaks and thruster performance we observed during rendezvous and docking," he added.</p>

<p>After multiple delays in its journey from Earth to the ISS, the spacecraft and its crew’s return has also been delayed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starliner was expected to undock from the ISS on June 14 and return to Earth after launching its inaugural crew of two NASA astronauts from Florida on June 5.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the American space agency announced that the Starliner crew will return no earlier than Saturday (Jun 22).&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The extra time allows the team to finalise departure planning and operations while the spacecraft remains cleared for crew emergency return scenarios within the flight rules,” NASA said in a blog post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The superbug&nbsp;was discovered by scientists in samples isolated from the International Space Station. In the study, they found 13 strains of the bacterium&nbsp;Enterobacter bugandensis,<em>&nbsp;</em>which is said to be&nbsp;multidrug resistant.</p>

<p>As ISS shared the video and informed, "The Expedition 71 crew soared into the Moon's shadow, or umbra, during the solar eclipse on Monday afternoon while working on cargo transfers, spacesuits, and science. The umbra on Earth was visible from the space station as it orbited into the path of the solar eclipse over southeastern Canada."</p>

<p>The path of totality, a tiny area where the Moon completely obscures the Sun, was only visible in parts of the United States, Mexico and Canada. A partial eclipse was visible in parts of some Caribbean countries, Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Portugal, and Iceland.</p>

<p>Done over the weekend, this surgery, as per an AFP report, was done on rubber bands and not a living organism. Deemed a "huge success" by participants, the experiment as per the news agency represents a significant advancement in space surgery technology. This could be crucial for treating medical emergencies during long-term manned missions, such as those to Mars.</p>

<h2><strong>How did surgeons perform space surgery?</strong></h2>

<p>Surgeons used a robot, named spaceMIRA. It has been developed by Virtual Incision (VIC) and the University of Nebraska.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The robot was reportedly launched to the ISS at the end of January aboard a SpaceX rocket. Curiously, it was stored in a compact box only the size of a microwave oven.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara, who has been on the ISS since last September, installed the robot last Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The experiment itself was conducted from Virtual Incision's headquarters in Lincoln, Nebraska, and it involved six surgeons who remotely operated upon the robot for around two hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Equipped with a camera and two arms, the robot performed standard surgical techniques. In a statement, Virtual Incision said: "The experiment tested standard surgical techniques like grasping, manipulating and cutting tissue. The simulated tissue is made up of rubber bands."</p>

<p>A significant challenge the surgeons faced during the experiment was the time lag of about 0.85 seconds between the operation centre on Earth and the ISS. Despite this, the experiment was deemed a success.</p>

<p>Virtual Incision said that "the experiment was deemed a huge success by all surgeons and researchers, and there were little to no hiccups." It added that this will "change the future of surgery."</p>

<p>NASA, which provided financial support for the project, highlighted the increasing need for emergency care, "including surgical procedures from simple stitching of lacerations to more complex activities," during longer space missions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The world's largest iceberg is on the move for the first time in more than three decades, scientists said towards the end of November.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At almost 4,000 square km (1,500 square miles), the Antarctic iceberg called A23a is roughly three times the size of New York City.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's rare to see an iceberg of this size on the move, said British Antarctic Survey glaciologist Oliver Marsh, so scientists will be watching its trajectory closely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As it gains speed, the colossal berg will likely be launched into the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. This will funnel it toward the Southern Ocean on a path known as "iceberg alley" where others of its kind can be found bobbing in dark waters.&nbsp;</p>

'Spot the Station': NASA will now let people check location of space station through mobile app

<p>The American space agency NASA is brainstorming ways to safely retrieve the International Space Station (ISS), a mission that looks trickier than it seems. NASA is taking this matter extremely seriously, because if gone wrong it can be a catastrophe on Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At a briefing on Thursday, the space agency’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP) called plans to deorbit the station in such a way that it does not cause any human casualties on the ground.&nbsp;</p>

International Space Station at risk of falling on Earth, NASA warns

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday (Oct 26) that Russia is aiming to have the first segment of its own space station in orbit by 2027, media reports said. This comes despite Russia facing recent setbacks, especially the August incident where its Luna-25 module crashed on the Moon's surface during pre-landing manoeuvres.</p>

<p>China has been planning to expand its space station from three to six modules in coming years and is touting it as an alternative to the NASA-led International Space Station's (ISS) for near-Earth missions to astronauts from other countries. The space station is being expanded by China as the ISS nears the end of its lifespan.</p>

<p>The Chinese space station's operational lifetime will be more than 15 years, said the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), a unit of the main space contractor of China, during the 74th International Astronautical Congress in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday (Oct 4).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lifetime announced is 10 years more than announced previously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the expansion to six modules, Tiangong at 180 metric tonnes is still only 40 per cent of the mass of the ISS, which can manage to keep only seven astronauts.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>ISS to be decommissioned after 2030</strong></h2>

<p>However, the ISS, which has been in orbit for more than two decades, is likely to be decommissioned after 2030, around the same time China has stated that it aims to become "a major space power".</p>

<p>Last year, Chinese state media said that as Tiangong became fully operational, the country would be no "slouch" as the ISS moved towards retirement, adding that "several countries" had requested to accommodate their astronauts on the Chinese station.</p>

<p>But in a blow to aspirations of China for space diplomacy, the European Space Agency (ESA) stated that it did not have the budgetary or "political" green light this year to participate in Tiangong, dropping a years-long plan of a visit by European astronauts.</p>
