The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up for the launch of RISAT-2BR1 and on Monday shared a photograph of PSLV C48, which will launch it from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota on December 11.

Fast forward to 2019. I ask my nieces and a few other high school students about the Vikram Lander and the moon. These kids are quite well-informed and were aware of Chandrayaan 2. But when I asked them why they thought this was significant, I was baffled at the unclarity and weak responses I got. It was quite evident that the importance of space exploration was not at all ‘a thing’ for them. &nbsp;

Since its inception in 1969, ISRO has significantly evolved and has come into the elite space club. Yet, it is not as popular as the USA’s NASA or Russia’s space agency Roscosmos. Why? Well, ISRO was first established after India gained independence. In terms of funding, the government had to justify why spending would be allotted to ISRO versus those in poverty. And for these reasons, ISRO focused on missions that were developmental in nature.

Things like weather forecasting and communication satellites. By doing this on lower budgets, ISRO is one of the most cost-effective space industries on the planet. But now that India has entered the elite space club, it is high time that the people of India- especially the youth- understand the significance and importance of space exploration. To do this, ISRO must focus on the following things. &nbsp;

Marketing &nbsp;

When NASA was founded, the US space program was determined to differentiate itself from the USSR. It would instead be an ‘open program’ in which facts and data would flow freely between the agency and the public. For that, an aggressive public relations team was built. The aim? Not just releasing information but also explaining astronomy, rockets and complicated physics to the lay person clearly and accurately. NASA’s PR created items that addressed reporters needs along with background material. They also produced broadcasts and held media symposiums. Every mission was explained before the launch and reported with text and visuals. An example? Before Apollo 11’s launch, NASA’s public affairs office gave journalists an entire binder with detailed diagrams of the spacesuit, the command module and even oxygen tanks. By doing this in a consistent manner, NASA not only helped the USA enter the elite space club but also sold space education to the masses. &nbsp;

In the same manner, ISRO should consider doing this. Chandrayaan2 has put Indian space exploration on the global radar. ISRO not only launched satellites but also has several cool unique initiatives that engage the youth of the country. The latest student satellite was launched in 2019 itself. ISRO should take up NASA’s approach and aggressively push for more information, statistics and details to get out to the public. It is not just enough to put it on their website. Press releases can be held along with symposiums explaining launches to the masses. In these public relations events and materials, ISRO should also actively engage with the youth. Scientists and engineers should visit schools more often to try and engage youth with space exploration and how they can get involved. &nbsp;

Private Partnerships &nbsp;

Earlier this year, the Central Government approved a commercial enterprise- NewSpace India Limited (NSIL)- under India’s Department of Space as an effort to build ISRO-private sector relationships and to expand ISRO commercialisation as well. NSIL helps with technology transfer between ISRP and private players along with promoting space-based products and spin-off technologies. While ISRO currently is and should remain government-funded and managed, getting the private sector to take some of the burdens of space exploration will not diminish ISRO’s reputation. In contrast, it will bolster it with more funding, more ideas and people and more cutting edge technology. With the increased partnership with private players, ISRO can focus on things that will help it grow as an organisation itself and also grow mainstream with the Indian masses. This includes human space flight, space exploration and developing larger and more cutting edge rockets. &nbsp;

Diplomacy &nbsp;

Another thing that ISRO must focus on at the earliest is making deals with foreign markets. This can both be a tool for diplomacy, as well as, bringing in revenue for further missions. With that being said, India needs to increase its number of missions annually if ISRO wants to remain in the same league as the elite space players. Working on space exploration with other countries would not just be great for diplomacy. A great move happened just last week with India launching the CARTOSAT along with American satellites in the same mission. Collaborating more with the global commercial space market will also help keep competitors like China at bay. &nbsp;

ISRO should be proud of itself and citizens should be proud of how ISRO has propelled India's global respect. But think about this. Despite not maximising its potential [yet] in marketing, outreach, private partnerships and foreign collaboration, ISRO STILL ranks in the top five global space players. Now, how can India go from ‘within the top five’ to number 1'? Marketing will educate the masses to the importance of every mission. Youth, in particular, need to be engaged. Private partnerships will not only bring in more innovation and revenue, but will also help ISRO focus on more advanced missions like human space exploration. Finally, collaborating with foreign space players will both increase ISRO productivity and work as a great diplomacy tool. This is the need of the hour for ISRO. This is because there are more space actors than ever before; both government and commercial players. If ISRO does not act quickly, India’s elite status can slide away as quickly as it has risen. &nbsp;

How ISRO can be the number one player in the game

US space agency NASA has found the debris of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/what-is-next-after-isro-locates-lander-vikram-248475">Chandrayaan 2's lander, Vikram</a>, on the lunar surface, the agency tweeted late on Monday with images.

NASA released an image taken by it's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) that showed the site of the spacecraft's impact (September 6 in India and September 7 in the US) and associated debris field, with parts scattered over almost two dozen locations spanning several kilometres.

In a statement, NASA said it released a mosaic image of the site on September 26, inviting the public to search it for signs of the lander.

It added that a person named Shanmuga Subramanian contacted the LRO project with a positive identification of debris -- with the first piece found about 750 meters northwest of the main crash site.

Blasting off in July, emerging Asian giant India had hoped with its Chandrayaan-2 ("Moon Vehicle 2") mission to become just the fourth country after the United States, Russia and regional rival China to make a successful Moon landing and the first on the lunar south pole.

The main spacecraft, which remains in orbit around the Moon, dropped the unmanned lander Vikram for a descent that would take five days, but the probe went silent just 2.1 kilometres above the surface.

Days after the failed landing, the Indian Space Research Organization said it had located the lander but hadn't been able to establish communication.

Chandrayaan-2: NASA satellite finds India’s Vikram Moon Lander, releases images of impact site

A Chennai-based amateur astronomer spent 8-10 hours a day to analyse moon's images which later helped NASA in locating ISRO's Vikram lander.&nbsp;

Subramanian tweeted on Tuesday morning that he received a mail from NASA which acknoweledged his help to find out the lander.

The Vikram lander was scheduled to land on Moon on September 7 but ISRO lost contact with lander minutes before the touchdown.&nbsp;

Subramanian said that he used to analyse images released by NASA's LROC to compare moon's earlier images with the ones after Vikram had lost contact. &nbsp;"I was spending something 8-10 hours each day for four to five hours on that. I stopped my research after I sent the tweet because I knew that this might be the probable debris," he said.&nbsp;

He then shared his results with NASA on October 3.&nbsp;

Subramanian is delighted with NASA's reponse which recognized his efforts.&nbsp;

Earlier on Tuesday morning, NASA confirmed that its moon mission Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has found the Vikram lander.

India's ambitious lunar mission Chandrayaan-2 was launched in July and intended to soft-land on Moon's south pole. The mission was on course for a successful soft-landing when ISRO lost contact with Vikram lander in the last moment.&nbsp;

ISRO's Cartosat-3 to address increased demand for urban planning, infrastructure development

India has been moving quickly in the defence and military satellite space in the past 3 years, increasing the presence of Indian strategic assets in space, with a slew of satellites launched for communication, navigation, surveillance and real-time monitoring of our vast borders, in the fourth dimension.&nbsp;

The Cartosat series of satellites, designed, developed and made in India, set a new benchmark in imagery and earth observation.&nbsp;

The Cartosat 3 satellite to be launched on November 27 by ISRO, is the best in class earth observation satellite, to be placed in a sun-synchronous orbit, at 509 kms altitude with an inclination of 97.5 degrees. &nbsp;

It is a geocentric satellite, panchromatic high resolution of less than 10 inches or 0.25 meters (Cartosat 2E had a resolution of 0.6 meters) &nbsp; – it can literally peep into a moving car, walking man or a foxhole by using adaptive optics, acousto- optical devices, in-orbit focusing using MEMs and large area-light- weight mirrors. It is a third-generation satellite, weighing 1625 kgs and is ninth in the series. As on date, this is the best in class imagery satellite and India can be justifiably proud of this achievement.&nbsp;

In the last few years, Indian defence forces used real-time satellite imagery to counter infiltration attempts, identify and destroy enemy fortifications and provided key inputs in the successful conduct of the surgical strikes.&nbsp;

Apart from the strategic application, the Cartosat 3 will also provide vital imagery for first response in disaster management, planning and utilisation of water resources, urban planning, rural development, agriculture, coastal and forest land cover and geoinformation system applications.&nbsp;

The satellite is capable of producing multispectral images and it is considered the best panchromatic high-resolution (capturing images in all the visible colours of light) with a 0.25-meter resolution. Cartosat 3 is an agile satellite that can be programmed for high-resolution spot imagery of a specific location. &nbsp;

Cartosat 3 will be launched by PSLV-C47 which in itself is a unique mission, in its XL version, with six solid strap-on motors, as it is designed to carry the payload to an orbit of 509 kms. &nbsp;

The co-passengers, of Cartosat 3 will be 13 commercial nanosatellites (also earth observation) &nbsp;from the United States, contracted by NSIL (New Space India Ltd – the newly formed commercial arm of ISRO in addition to ANTRIX), in its maiden commercial order, which is another first for this mission.&nbsp;

Cartosat 3 will be launched by PSLV-C47 which in itself is a unique mission, in its XL version, with six solid strap-on motors, as it is designed to carry the payload to an orbit of 509 kms. The co-passengers, of Cartosat 3 will be 13 commercial nanosatellites (also earth observation) from the United States, contracted by NSIL (New Space India Ltd – the newly formed commercial arm of ISRO in addition to ANTRIX), in its maiden commercial order, which is another first for this mission. The launch of PSLV-C47 carrying Cartosat-3 which was scheduled for November 25 at 0928 hours, has been rescheduled for November 27 at 0928 hours from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

ISRO will launch the Cartosat-3 and 13 Nanosatellites of the US on the rescheduled date from the second launch pad of the space centre.

PSLV-C47 will launch Cartosat-3 and 13 commercial nanosatellites into the Sun-synchronous orbit.Cartosat-3 satellite is a third-generation agile advanced satellite having high-resolution imaging capability.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday released new three-dimensional images from the moon`s surface captured by the Chandrayaan -2.

The images of a crater from the lunar surface was captured by the Terrain Mapping Camera-2 aboard Chandrayaan-2.

These include - Craters (formed by impactors), Lava tubes (potential sites for future habitability), Rilles (furrows formed by lava channels or collapsed lava tubes), Dorsa or wrinkle ridges (formed mostly in Mare regions depicting cooling of and contraction of basaltic lava), Graben structures (depicts the structural dislocations on the lunar surface) and Lunar Domes/ Cones (denoting localized vents of past volcanism on the Moon).&nbsp;

Chandrayaan-2 sends new pictures of moon's surface

WION has learnt that the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was also alerted at the same time (around September 4th) when the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant was informed about the possible malware/virus attack. Some of its computers (used only for internet surfing purposes) were also affected by the malware.&nbsp;

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant located in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district has been in the news after social media users claimed that some of the facility’s systems were hit by a computer virus/malware.&nbsp;

The first official statement in this regard came from the information officer of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project on October 29.&nbsp;

“Some false information is being propagated on the social media platform electronic and print media with reference to the cyber attack on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. This is to clarify that Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) and other Indian nuclear power plants control systems are stand-alone and not connected to outside cyber network and internet,” &nbsp;the statement said.&nbsp;

Any cyber-attack on the Nuclear Power Plant Control System is not possible. At present, KKNPP Unit -1 and 2 are operating at 1000MWe and 600MWe respectively without any operational or safety concerns.&nbsp;

However, on the very next day (October 30) the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) issued a press release stating that the identification of malware in NPCIL system is correct.&nbsp;

“The matter was conveyed by CERT-In when it was noticed by them on September 4, 2019. The matter was immediately investigated by DAE specialists. The investigation revealed that the infected PC belonged to a user who was connected to the internet-connected network used for administrative purposes. This is isolated from the critical internal network. The networks are being continuously monitored. The investigation also confirms that the plant systems are not affected,” the release stated.

While there is no official statement from ISRO, WION has learnt that few ISRO computers that were connected to the internet (only for browsing purposes) while being completely isolated from the internal network were only affected. ISRO had taken appropriate action and has been monitoring regularly.&nbsp;

It is also understood that such malware attacks keep happening on all systems that are connected to the internet for web surfing and that cyber-security experts are constantly maintaining a vigil.&nbsp;

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Sivan on Saturday said Chandrayaan-2 is not the end of the country`s efforts to land on the moon and that the organisation is working on a second landing that it will accomplish in the near future.

K Sivan said this while addressing students and faculty of IIT Delhi on their 50th convocation, where he was invited as the chief guest.

"ISRO will pull all its experience, knowledge and technical prowess to set things right and demonstrate soft landing in the near future," the ISRO chairman said.

"And Chandrayaan-2 is not the end of the story. Our plans on Aditya L1 solar mission, human spaceflight programme are on track. A large number of advance satellite launches are planned in the coming months," he said.

An alumnus of IIT Bombay, K Sivan said, "From my own personal experience, I can say that IITs are the holy grail of technical education in India. And I am sure that you all will continue the glorious tradition of Delhi as well as that of IIT-ans who have excelled in every field they have worked.&nbsp;

The Indian Research Space Organisation (ISRO) on Thursday released the first image of the surface of the moon captured by the Imaging Infrared Spectrometer (IIRS) payload on-board Chandrayaan 2.

"See the first illuminated image of the lunar surface acquired by #Chandrayaan2's IIRS payload. IIRS is designed to measure reflected sunlight from the lunar surface in narrow and contiguous spectral channels," ISRO tweeted along with the picture on its account.

The image covers part of the lunar farside in the northern hemisphere. A few prominent craters (Sommerfield, Stebbins and Kirkwood) are seen in the image. The IIRS on-board Chandrayaan-2 is designed to measure the reflected sunlight and emitted part of Moon light from the lunar surface in narrow and contiguous spectral channels (bands) ranging from ~800 - 5000 nanometre (0.8-5.0 micrometre (um)), ISRO said in a statement.

It uses a grating to split and disperse the reflected sunlight (and emitted component) into different spectral bands.

"The major objective of IIRS is to understand the origin and evolution of the Moon in a geologic context by mapping the lunar surface mineral and volatile composition using signatures in the reflected solar spectrum," the space agency said.

"Preliminary analysis suggests that IIRS could successfully measure the variations in the reflected solar radiation that bounces off the lunar surface from different kinds of surface types, namely, crater central peaks (example Stebbins), crater floors (example Stebbins and Sommerfield), very fresh reworked ejecta associated with small craterlets within the crater floor of a large crater (example Sommerfield) and also the sun-illuminated inner rims of craters (example Kirkwood)," ISRO added.

"The variations in the spectral radiance are primarily due to the mineralogical or compositional variations that exist in the lunar surface and also due to the effect of space weathering," the space agency further said.

ISRO releases high-resolution images of moon clicked from Chandrayaan-2

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Friday, tweeted out images of the "targeted landing site of India’s Chandrayaan-2 lander Vikram" and stated that the lander had a "hard landing". The "precise location of the spacecraft in the lunar highlands has yet to be determined," NASA said in a statement.&nbsp;

NASA's statement further added that the lander may have been obscured by shadows as it "was dusk when the landing area was imaged and thus large shadows covered much of the terrain".

NASA'S Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter&nbsp;(LRO) flew over Vikram's landing site on September 17. Another attempt will be made to spot the lander on October 14.

The lander of the Chandrayaan-2 moon mission was attempting a "soft," or controlled, landing near the south pole of the moon where scientists believe there could be water ice. Communication was lost just as it was about to touch down.

Officials from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said imagery from the country’s Chandrayaan 2 orbiter, which launched in tandem with the Vikram lander, had located the landing craft on the moon.

Meanwhile, the Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) has been trying to re-establish contact with the lander since the landing attempt. Data immediately before losing contact suggests that Vikram was descending at high speed, making it very hard to decipher if the lander is intact. The hopes of re-establishing contact are even lesser now, as the lander was designed for a two-week mission.

"Payloads are the instruments which give the scientific output for any mission. In Vikram lander, we have three payloads and I am part of one of the payloads and I have worked for the mechanical system of that payload. My experience while working for this mission was very delightful and exciting, the seniors are very helpful," said Upadhyay.

"It was a great learning experience, we are very excited. Tomorrow, we will hear that India has made history. I am very much excited like every ISROian and every Indian. We hope that everything will go fine," he added.

The Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft will be the first Indian expedition to carry out a soft landing on the lunar surface. This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to conduct a soft landing on the moon.

Former ISRO Director D Sasikumar on Saturday said that the communication loss with "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/india-proud-of-its-scientists-says-pm-modi-after-vikram-lander-loses-communication-248135">Vikram" lander</a> may not have been due to crash-landing.

"We have to find out from the communication data whether it is a soft landing or it is a crash landing. In my opinion, it is not a crash landing because the communication channel is on between the lander and the orbiter. It should be intact. So, let us hope after the analysis done, we may be able to get the final figure," he said while talking to ANI.

The communication data which is missing is being analysed now, he said.
