Every Indian is proud: Amit Shah lauds ISRO scientists for Chandrayaan-2

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, known for keeping a brisk pace of work, on Saturday delivered a speech at the ISRO Space Centre in the morning and addressed gatherings at Mumbai and Aurangabad, all within a gap of eight hours.

His address to the nation from ISRO control centre came after he had early Saturday witnessed the descent of Vikram module of Chandrayaan II mission which lost communication with ground stations at an altitude of 2.1 metres from the moon.&nbsp;

Modi returned to Delhi early on Friday after a three-day visit to Russia which was packed with engagements. He had a summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and took part in Eastern Economic Forum meeting in Vladivostok. He also had bilateral meetings with leaders of Japan, Malaysia, and Mongolia on the sidelines of the forum meeting.&nbsp;

He flew to Bengaluru on Friday evening to witness the descent of Chandrayan-2 mission. After his morning speech at ISRO control centre, Prime Minister reached Mumbai to lay the foundation stone of metro lines and launch other projects.&nbsp;

He later addressed a `mahila sammelan` in Aurangabad. BJP leaders say the Prime Minister has not had a single day of rest in the past over five years.&nbsp;

"It`s so simple. He lands Delhi at 4 am after 5000km journey, had a busy schedule whole day, including a video address, reached Bangalore, remained awake till 3 am, again reached ISRO at 8 am and left for Mumbai and Aurangabad to push his development agenda," party leader Vijay Chauthaiwale tweeted.

Sources also said that Modi never thought for a moment to avoid personally witnessing ISRO`s plan to soft-land Chandrayaan-2`s Vikram module on the lunar surface even though the success rate of soft landing missions is less than 40 per cent.

"The fact that the Prime Minister should avoid Bengaluru because the moon landing might not have been a complete success was not a consideration even for a moment," sources said on Saturday.

PM Modi watched the proceedings early Saturday as the lander began its descent towards the moon. The descent was perfect till an altitude of 2.1 km when communication from lander `Vikram` was lost to ground stations.

In his address to the nation from ISRO Control Centre on Saturday morning, Modi lauded their efforts towards Chandrayaan 2, India`s second moon mission and its first attempt at soft-landing on the surface of the moon.&nbsp;

He asserted that there will be "new dawn".

"India is proud of our scientists! They`ve given their best and have always made India proud. These are moments to be courageous, and courageous we will be," he said.&nbsp;

Communication with Vikram lander lost, announces ISRO Chairman

Former Space Scientist PC Ghosh and Scientist Amitabh Pandey asserted that the reason behind<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/vikram-hasnt-crashed-communication-channel-between-orbiter-and-lander-is-still-on-former-isro-director-248156"> communication breakdown </a>has not been discovered yet. However, partial success has been achieved as the Orbiter is working perfectly fine in the space.

"We are unaware of the fact that why the communication had broken down. The orbiter is working perfectly fine. The objective will be achieved and probably the scientists will ask the Orbiter to capture a picture. The objective of achieving a soft landing has not been achieved. This is not big disappointment rather it is a partial success," said Ghosh while speaking to ANI.

Ghosh further appreciated <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/in-an-emotional-moment-pm-modi-hugs-consoles-teary-eyed-isro-chief-248168">Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s efforts</a> for supporting the scientists at ISRO, Bengaluru.

"The Prime Minister was echoing the achievement of the ISRO. We are hoping that Chandrayaan-2 will overcome everything. The orbiter is still working fine and it can check the physicality over there," he added.

"There were a lot of objectives behind this mission. There was a communication break-down in between and the reasons behind it are not known till now. Maybe it will be discovered later. The objective of this mission was to test the abilities of our technology. We have faced a small loophole in this mission but overall it will provide us with many facts in the future," said Pandey.

Pandey took a jibe at Prime Minister Modi and said, "Prime Minister should increase the budget along with the confidence. Scientists are human beings too; their biggest emotion is attached to their research."

Chandrayaan-2: Reason behind communication breakdown still not known, say Scientists

It's evident that India is within reach of the moon. That too the unexplored side of the moon.

The Vikram module of Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to make a soft landing in the South Polar region of the moon early on Saturday.

If successful, this mission, will secure India's stature as space superpower proving that we have a capacity to soft-land&nbsp;on the moon.

With this, India would become the first country to map&nbsp;the lunar surface in the unexplored side of the moon and study its atmosphere.

Isro says&nbsp;that the last 15 minutes of the touch down with the Vikram lander will be '15 minutes of terror'.

If Vikram module of Chandrayaan-2 passes critical minutes of the touchdown, the lander will measure the quakes in the moon and the rover will analyse the soil.

Such studies will enhance our understanding of the moon.

Besides this, the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter will circle around the moon for one year and collect information on minerals in the moon and search for water.

This would be the most sophisticated search for water in the moon. Chandrayaan-2 is equipped with infra-red imagers and radars. Put simply, Chandrayaan - 2 heralds a new era in India's space exploration.

Overall, this mission has the potential to make India a leader in lunar research. And this is a huge achievement.&nbsp;

The US, the then Soviet Union and China had a headstart in space missions. In a little over 5 decades since the establishment of ISRO, India is on its way to lead the world when it comes to the moon.

Then comes the issue of cost-efficiency. This mission has cost India only $150 million which is&nbsp;cheaper than the budget of Hollywood film 'Interstellar'.

Successful landing would be a testimony to ISRO's growing expertise. In science, India has been a heavyweight - contrary to popular perception.

Chandrayaan-2 will be a glittering achievement in that proud tradition.

Till now only Russia, the United States and China have made the 384,000-kilometre (239,000-mile) journey and landed safely on the Moon. India hopes to become the next lunar country with its Chandrayaan-2 mission and to put a craft with a Rover onto the Moon's surface to collect data.

Chandrayaan-2: What is 'soft landing' on the Moon?

Hours before India's ambitious lunar mission <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/all-eyes-on-indias-ambitious-lunar-mission-chandrayaan-2-touch-down-tonight-247882">Chandrayaan-2</a>'s soft landing on the surface of the moon, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday posted a humorous message on Twitter featuring the spacecraft's Lunar Orbiter extending good wishes to the Lander ahead of the historic moment.

"It was great travelling with you so far Vikram. Best of luck! I hope you reach the South Pole soon," the Lunar Orbiter says while releasing Lander Vikram. To this Vikram replies, "It was quite the journey indeed! I'll see you around - in the orbit."

"We have the same wishes for Vikram, Orbiter. Want to stay in touch with Vikram and Pragyan as they make their way to the untouched lunar South Pole and uncover its many mysteries? Then keep an eye out for the next edition of CY2 Chronicles!," the ISRO tweeted.

The Lander Vikram of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/chandrayaan-2-a-milestone-for-the-entire-world-former-nasa-astronaut-247874">Chandrayaan-2</a> is named after Dr Vikram A Sarabhai, the father of the Indian Space Programme. It is designed to function for one lunar day, which is equivalent to about 14 Earth days.

Vikram has the capability to communicate with Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu near Bangalore, as well as with the orbiter and rover. While the Lander weighing 1,471 kg is designed to execute a soft landing on the lunar surface, the Rover, a 6-wheeled robotic vehicle named Pragyan, can travel up to 500 m and it leverages solar energy for its functioning.

It can only communicate with the Lander, which was separated from the orbiter on September 2 at 1.15 pm, entering a descending orbit around the Moon.

Pragyan is housed inside the Lander Vikram and it will roll out and deliver scientific payloads to conduct surface and subsurface experiments.

The lander is expected to touch down near the South Pole of the Moon in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Important step in landmark journey to Moon: PM Modi on Chandrayaan-2 entering lunar orbit

Chandrayaan-2: Journey so far

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/who-wouldnt-want-a-friend-like-bhutan-it-is-an-honour-to-be-part-of-its-development-pm-modi-in-thimpu-243651">Bhutan would like to tap resources from India to develop its space technology</a>, said the Bhutanese Prime Minister (Dr) Lotay Tshering here on Sunday.

"Bhutan being an underdeveloped country, we wished to have it (space technology) many years back but because of economic reasons, we could not do it. Now with the help of the Indian government, with the help of ISRO, and SAARC satellite activities are going on," Tshering told ANI.

"We're very happy and very grateful to the government of India for building a station here. From now on, we'd like to tap resources from there.&nbsp;Through PM Modi's leadership, ISRO is willing to help us build our human capacity in that so we`re looking forward to that," he added.

His statement to ANI came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for New Delhi from Paro, after wrapping up his fruitful two-day bilateral trip to Bhutan.

Both India and Bhutan have agreed to focus on newer areas of bilateral cooperation like education, health, and space.&nbsp;

Taking this forward, out of the nine MoUs inked between the two nations, at least seven are in the field of education.

An MoU between ISRO and the Department of Information Technology and Telecom (DITT) of the Royal Government of Bhutan on the establishment of SATCOM Network for the Utilisation of South Asia Satellite was also exchanged.

The Bhutanese leader highlighted that the cornerstone of the India-Bhutan relationship is the people-to-people connection.

"The main theme of PM Narendra Modi's visit to Bhutan this time was healthy people to people contact. He came with a big smile and left with a big smile," he added.

Bhutan would like to tap resources from India to develop its space technology, said the Bhutanese Prime Minister (Dr) Lotay Tshering here on Sunday. From now on, we'd like to tap resources from there. Through PM Modi's leadership, ISRO is willing to help us build our human capacity in that so we`re looking forward to that," he added. His statement to ANI came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for New Delhi from Paro, after wrapping up his fruitful two-day bilateral trip to Bhutan. Both India and Bhutan have agreed to focus on newer areas of bilateral cooperation like education, health, and space. The two countries share a warm and time-tested relationship which continues to strengthen under PM Modi`s leadership. The Prime Minister's visit to Bhutan exemplifies the importance that India attaches to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy.

August 12, 2019, marks the 100th birth anniversary of Vikram Sarabhai, father of the Indian space programme. At a time, when Chandrayaan-2 is in orbit, it becomes imperative to look back into the journey of this remarkable man and a towering intellectual.

Sarabhai’s unparalleled contribution as a scientist and as an institution builder is of great significance. Just as it is difficult to imagine the US space programme and its early success without Werhner Von Braun or the Soviets without Sergei Korolev, the Indian space programme cannot be evaluated without the contribution of Vikram Sarabhai.

As someone who believed that institution-building leads to great power status, Sarabhai was behind the successful establishment of institutions in fields as diverse as atomic energy, space sciences and management.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) and ISRO, owe their existence to this one man.

Coming from an industrial family, Sarabhai was not the typical rags to riches story. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but aspired to see India as a developed nation. Coming from an affluent background helped him get in touch with India’s Who’s Who, including Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who came from a similar background.

The coming together of these two like-minded individuals, who shared similar views about nation-building, paved the way for India’s space programme.

Sarabhai successfully convinced the government of the importance of a space programme for a developing country like India after the USSR’s Sputnik launch. An elite background helped - he did not have to go through time delaying bureaucratic red tape and a vast gestation period, that became the bane of many fine scientific minds.

Sarabhai’s worldwide contacts with scientists, academicians, scholars and politicians made India’s prospects of developing its own space programme a distinct possibility. India was one of the few countries to have begun a space programme in 1963.

Sarabhai was a team leader. He rewarded those who worked hard under his watch. His informal style of working impressed and inspired people around him and he had the knack of recruiting talented people, many of whom went on to become pioneers in the field of space sciences and research.

Sarabhai was chairman of the Indian National Committee on Space Research (INCOSPAR) when it was constituted in 1962. He was also the chairman of the first UN Space Conference held at Vienna in 1968.

The father of India’s space programme famously said: “It is not accidental that on the soil of India, great space powers like the United States, the USSR and France are collaborating with us at the equatorial range near Thumba and even the United Nations sponsorship of this range is not merely a matter of form, but constitutes an umbrella under which regardless of political differences, nations can collaborate in the peaceful usage of outer space. In my opinion, space research is in relation to national capability, it generates self-confidence. The benefits of it (space research) far outweigh any other factor. “

Sarabhai was also founder of the first Experimental Satellite Earth Communication Station (ESECS) at Ahmedabad in 1967. Later, this became the main centre for all of India’s communication experiments.

On ESECS and India’s space journey, he once told an interviewer: “Yes, we set this up because about five years ago we realised that this was going to be one of the most important peaceful applications of outer space and would have a profound influence on the future development of communications and mass communications in this country”.

Vikram Sarabhai spearheaded the country’s space programme for nearly a decade. His death at the early age of 52, left a crisis in the space training for a brief period, as everyone was used to his towering presence.

Sarabhai’s contribution can never be equalled. Had he lived on for a decade or two more, there is not a shred of doubt that India’s space programme would have ascended to its great heights much before it actually did.

Second earth bound orbit raising maneuver for Chandrayaan-2 successfully performed

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/what-chandrayaan-2-will-accomplish-and-why-the-mission-is-significant-for-india-237667">Chandrayaan-2</a>, the second generation moon mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), lifted off from the Satish Dhawan centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The launch took place at 2:43 pm IST on Monday.

A few minutes later, ISRO announced the launch was successful.

"The GSLV Mk-III successfully injected Chandrayaan-2 in defined orbit today. It is the beginning of historical journey of India to moon and land near its South Pole to carry out experiments and explore the unexplored," said a beaming ISRO chief K Sivan.

"After a serious technical snag before the last launch, which we fixed, ISRO bounced back with flying colours. Immediately after the technical snag observed, the entire team swung into action. The 24 hours (after the first lauch was cancelled) were significant," he added.

I salute the people who made it happen, said Sivan.

This was the second attempt by ISRO to launch Chandrayaan-2 after the first attempt had to be called off at the 11th hour on July 15.

Chandrayaan-2 will explore a region of Moon where no mission has ever set foot. The spacecraft consists of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover together referred to as "composite body."

The probe's total mass is 3.8 tonne and is expected to land on the Moon's south polar region on September 6 or 7 this year.It will be the first Indian expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. The rover will remain on the moon for 14 days.

This mission will make India the fourth country after the US, Russia, and China to carry out a soft landing on Moon.

Once it's in lunar orbit 100 kilometres above the surface, the spacecraft will send a lander on a controlled descent to the surface.

The lander will then release a six-wheeled solar-powered rover that will cover about 200 metres of lunar territory.

The aim of the fourteen-day mission is to examine the surface, gathering data on minerals and even water in the form of ice.

India has spent about $140 million to get Chandrayaan-2 ready for the 384,400 kilometres (around 240,000 miles) trip.

The United States spent about $25 billion - the equivalent of more than $100 billion in current prices - on 15 Apollo missions, including the six that put Armstrong and other astronauts on the Moon.

China landed its Chang'e 4 lunar craft in January, and spent $8.4 billion on its entire space programme in 2017, according to international Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development figures.

And Russia - the first country to land an unmanned moon rocket in 1966 - spent more than $20 billion at today's values on lunar missions in the 1960s and 70s.

India's moon mission Chandrayaan-2 successfully launched as India takes a giant leap

Chandrayaan-2 was launched successfully by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday afternoon. The lunar mission will explore the moon's South Pole and take the study of presence of water on the moon ahead.

The rover onboard the lunar mission is expected to land on the moon's surface on September 7. But what happens in this 48-day-long journey?

The Chandrayaan-2 mission will separate from the main rocket 16 minutes after the launch, at a height of 181.6km above the earth's surface. From Monday (July 22) till day 23, the lunar mission will keep orbiting the earth.

Then, Chandrayaan-2 will enter the lunar orbit on the 30th day and the process will continue till the 42nd day. The ISRO will keep communicating and controlling the lunar mission all this while, its scientists monitoring the overall health of the probe and standing by for emergency.

Once it's in lunar orbit 100 kilometres above the surface, the spacecraft will send lander Vikram with rover Pragyan onboard on a controlled descent to the moon's surface. On September 7, Vikram will land on the South Pole of the moon.

The lander will then release the six-wheeled solar-powered rover Pragyan that will cover about 200 metres of lunar territory and will remain there for 14 days. The aim of the mission is to examine the surface, gather data on minerals and even water in the form of ice.

ISRO chief K Sivan said Vikram's 15-minute final descent "will be the most terrifying moments as we have never undertaken such a complex mission".
