After PSLVC-45 successfully injected EMISAT into sun-synchronous polar orbit on Monday, ISRO chief K Sivan said the satellite is now marching towards the 485km orbit to do its function as an orbital platform for experiments, adding that next month the space research organisation will launch PSLVC-46 followed by PSLVC-47 and Chandrayaan 2.

Addressing a press conference here, Sivan said: "PSLVC45 is now marching towards the 485 km orbit to do its function as an orbital platform for experiments. I want to thank the team members for making the mission a success."

"This time, the mission is very innovative as three experiments were attached to it -- automatic identification system from ISRO for maritime satellite applications capturing messages transmitted from ships, automatic Packet Repeating System from AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation) and Advanced Retarding Potential for Ionospheric Studies (ARIS) from Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) for the structural studies of ionosphere," he added.

Sivan said it is for the first time that a PSLV is carrying out three orbital mission in a single flight.

Stating that industries have played a major role in the success of the mission, Sivan said: "Around 95 per cent of hardware for this mission is fabricated outside ISRO and in fact, the payload for this particular satellite was fabricated in Bengaluru based industry."

For the first time ISRO set up a viewer gallery for common people and around 1,200 viewers enjoyed the show. "As many as 1200 viewers enjoyed the mission launch today. The next mission we will allow five thousand viewers and subsequently, it will be increased to ten thousand in future," the ISRO Chairman said.

Talking about the upcoming events and mission of the ISRO, Sivan stated: "In second half of May, 108 students from various parts of the country will visit the ISRO for 15 days to get exposure of space and science and technology so that they can plan their careers towards space technology that would be useful for us."

"In May we are going to launch, PSLVC-46 followed by PSLVC-47 and Chandrayaan 2. By the end of this year, nearly 30 other missions will be launched," he said.

The PSLVC-45 launch carries 28 international customer satellites from four countries -- Lithuania, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. All these satellites are being launched under commercial arrangements.&nbsp;

French Space Agency CNES on Wednesday signed an agreement with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to set up a maritime surveillance centre in the country.

A press statement issued by the CNES said that the agreement was signed by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall and India's space agency Chairman K&nbsp;Sivan in Bengaluru.

This signature follows on from the broader agreement signed last March during President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to India.

"The CNES-ISRO agreement, intended to supply an operational system for detecting, identifying and tracking ships in the Indian Ocean, provides for a maritime surveillance centre to be set up in India in May this year, sharing of capacity to process existing satellite data and joint development of associated algorithms,"&nbsp;the statement read.

The meeting between CNES’s President and ISRO's Chairman also offered the opportunity to confirm the progress of the agencies'&nbsp;work in the field of human spaceflight to lay the groundwork for missions of future Indian astronauts.

A team of experts from ISRO will start receiving training this month at the Toulouse Space Centre, the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations and the MEDES space clinic, the statement said.

At the end of his visit, Gall commented, "Our relationship with India is flourishing and maritime surveillance from space is a domain of strategic interest to our two nations. It is through the remarkable integration of CNES and ISRO teams that we have been able to deploy this programme in such a short time after it was launched during President Macron’s state visit to India just a year ago."

While announcing the timeline for the human flight targeted at the end of 2021, ISRO chief K Sivan made two important comments. In the context of setting up a new vertical within the agency — the Human Space Flight Centre — he said the agency was looking beyond the first human flight. He said, “We are going to continue this programme in terms of a space station and human to the moon.” The second noteworthy comment from the space agency head was that India would be on a par with China with the human space flight.&nbsp;

Taken together, the comments amount to a marked strategic shift in India’s approach to space and point to the process of maturing of ISRO as a global player in the space arena. Clearly, the agency has recognised the need for human missions as a worthwhile goal to pursue over the long-term as a logical extension of its activities till now. It has also made it apparent that it is joining the undeclared space race with China.&nbsp;

When India took baby steps to become a space-faring nation, Yuri Gagarin had already become the first human to have travelled to space in April 1961, and by the time ISRO took birth, the first human had landed on the moon. Since India’s forays into space began against the backdrop of a bitter space race between America and the Soviet Union, the founding father of the space programme, Vikram Sarabhai, had to declare that “we do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the moon or the planets or manned spaceflight”. Instead, he wanted India to use space technology to solve “real problems of man and society”.

After having followed Sarabhai’s vision for four decades during which ISRO contributed immensely to nation’s development, the agency has finally decided to turn the “fantasy” of a manned space flight into reality. This is definitely a shift because after the first Indian, Rakesh Sharma, was propelled into space aboard Soyuz T-11 in April 1984, participation in international manned missions or planning its own human flights were not on ISRO’s agenda. In fact, human flight was first discussed in India in 2004 — a year after China had sent its first human spaceflight. In 2006, ISRO formally discussed the idea with a group of external experts and began working on some building block technologies needed for the mission as pre-project activity with seed money allocated in subsequent budgets.

India has been building its space capabilities in a step by step manner, working simultaneously on making rockets, fabricating satellites and developing applications. In parallel, it has a very strong presence in space science, having delivered successful missions to the moon, Mars and a space telescope AstroSat. The lunar orbiter, Chandrayaan, and the astronomy satellite have led to some spectacular scientific discoveries using home-made instruments. The Mars Orbiter Mission was a technology demonstrator. On the other hand, China, which began its space programme much later, went ahead more aggressively. It focused on military applications, human flight and building a space station, with an eye on projecting itself as a competitor to NASA. It has a few space science achievements worth mentioning. Clearly, the Indian and Chinese programmes have grown so far with different goals and philosophies. In space applications and space science, India is ahead of China. But in human flights, China has taken a lead having demonstrated its prowess with as many as six successful missions, including operations like spacewalk and docking with its under-construction space station.

ISRO and its leadership are well justified in projecting their ambitions with regard to human flights vis-à-vis China, but these ambitions will need political backing beyond the first human flight planned for December 2021. Though a late entrant in human flights, ISRO may be up to some surprises up its sleeves, as it did with Chandrayaan-1 and the Mars mission. Sniffing signatures of water molecule on the moon by Chandrayaan-1 four decades after man landed there and stringing a spacecraft straight to the Red planet in the first attempt are no mean achievements. For ISRO, the race may have has just begun.

Since India’s forays into space began against the backdrop of a bitter space race between America and the Soviet Union, the founding father of the space programme, Vikram Sarabhai, had to declare that “we do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the moon or the planets or manned spaceflight”. Instead, he wanted India to use space technology to solve “real problems of man and society”. After having followed Sarabhai’s vision for four decades during which ISRO contributed immensely to nation’s development, the agency has finally decided to turn the “fantasy” of a manned space flight into reality. This is definitely a shift because after the first Indian, Rakesh Sharma, was propelled into space aboard Soyuz T-11 in April 1984, participation in international manned missions or planning its own human flights were not on ISRO’s agenda. In fact, human flight was first discussed in India in 2004 — a year after China had sent its first human spaceflight. In 2006, ISRO formally discussed the idea with a group of external experts and began working on some building block technologies needed for the mission as pre-project activity with seed money allocated in subsequent budgets. India has been building its space capabilities in a step by step manner, working simultaneously on making rockets, fabricating satellites and developing applications. In parallel, it has a very strong presence in space science, having delivered successful missions to the moon, Mars and a space telescope AstroSat. The lunar orbiter, Chandrayaan, and the astronomy satellite have led to some spectacular scientific discoveries using home-made instruments. The Mars Orbiter Mission was a technology demonstrator. On the other hand, China, which began its space programme much later, went ahead more aggressively. It focused on military applications, human flight and building a space station, with an eye on projecting itself as a competitor to NASA. It has a few space science achievements worth mentioning. Clearly, the Indian and Chinese programmes have grown so far with different goals and philosophies. In space applications and space science, India is ahead of China. But in human flights, China has taken a lead having demonstrated its prowess with as many as six successful missions, including operations like spacewalk and docking with its under-construction space station. ISRO and its leadership are well justified in projecting their ambitions with regard to human flights vis-à-vis China, but these ambitions will need political backing beyond the first human flight planned for December 2021. Though a late entrant in human flights, ISRO may be up to some surprises up its sleeves, as it did with Chandrayaan-1 and the Mars mission. Sniffing signatures of water molecule on the moon by Chandrayaan-1 four decades after man landed there and stringing a spacecraft straight to the Red planet in the first attempt are no mean achievements. "But, honestly, nobody mentioned this anywhere. I felt sad about it but today this award gives a feeling that my contribution is recognised. In other words, I am happy to be known as the man who has contributed rather than a victim of spy,"&nbsp;said Narayanan.

Former ISRO scientist Narayanan was arrested in an alleged espionage case in November 1994.

"If you think that something is right and the truth, then you should stick to it. You should not surrender to pressure or influences. That was what I was doing. It is not easy to fight a powerful government and but my happiness is the concerned governments understood the truth. I am happy that they corrected themselves,"&nbsp;Narayanan added.

The scientist was reportedly accused of selling vital Indian space technology secrets to Pakistan. The Supreme Court had, however, cleared him of spy charges and termed his arrest as “needless” and “unnecessary.”

"It is an experiment, we are experimenting with different satellites, once this is done I hope this becomes a backup communication during disasters or taking remote-sensing images," Shaarook said.

"The future is bright," he added gleefully.

The small 1.2 kg experimental satellite looks like a cube with a life mission of two months. The research and development for the satellite was done in quick two months and the fabrication took just six days.

Srimathy Kesan, mission director, said: "For the last six months I have been waiting for such a moment because anyone can pay money and get into a rocket but every Indian should do something for the country and I got into space research because the Moon is the ultimate destination."

A satellite for exclusive use by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The satellite will be used for the purpose of utilising space resources for security, operational planning and border infrastructure development.

The project is slated to strengthen island and border security and facilitate the development of infrastructure in border and island areas.

The report of task force approved by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday, had identified island development, border security, communication and navigation, GIS and operations planning system and border infrastructure development for use of space technology, according to a Ministry statement.

The report was finalised after MHA had a consultation with all stakeholders including Border Guarding Forces (BGFs), ISRO, National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The task force would be headed by Joint Secretary (Border Management) and would have members from BSF, Department of Space and BM Division.

To execute the project in a time bound manner, a short, medium and long term plan has been proposed for implementation in five years in close coordination with ISRO and MoD.

Major recommendations of the report were to build capacity in BGFs to use space resources for security, operational planning and border infrastructure development.

In short term, immediate needs of BGFs would be met by procurement of high-resolution imagery and the hiring of bandwidth for communications.

In the midterm, one satellite is being launched by ISRO for the exclusive use of MHA. Over the long term, MHA would develop ground segment and network infrastructure to share satellite resources by user agencies, develop a central archival facility for storing various imagery resources and dissemination of the same to user agencies.

Satellite communication would also help in the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in remote areas. Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS)-based GPS would provide navigation facilities for operational parties in high altitude, remote and difficult borders and Naxal areas.

The government has designated BSF as the lead agency for implementation of ground segment and network infrastructure including the establishment of the archival facility.

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the assistance of the Department of Space.&nbsp;

We are going to land on the light side of the moon. Only thing is where we are landing, nobody else has gone. Going closer to the South pole, which nobody has gone. We expect a lot of science available for that.

K Sivan: Regarding the tech part. We are at par with them.

Addressing the media at Bengaluru, the ISRO chief said: "Preparations for Gaganyaan mission are underway. It has been a major turning point for ISRO." The ISRO chief informed that the space agency carried out 17 missions last year with seven being launch missions.

"The target for two unmanned missions to space is December 2020 and July 2021. The target for a manned mission to space is December 2021," Sivan said.

Sivan said the agency had created a science centre in Jammu and Kashmir while informing that human space programme will be a turning point for the space organization.

"We will set up six incubation and research centres across the country. We will bring the Indian students to ISRO. Why do the Indian students need to go to NASA?"

The objective of the Chandrayaan-2 mission is to carry a three-member crew to low Earth orbit and return them safely to a predefined destination on Earth. PM Modi had on Independence Day announced that the mission would be undertaken by 2022.

The Chandrayaan-2 consists of a lunar orbiter, lander and rover developed by ISRO. The mission was delayed after Russia's Roscosmos failed to provide the lander, later the Russian space agency pulled out of the project leading the space body to develop it indigenously.&nbsp;

This year is the birth centenary of the founding father of Indian Space programme, Vikram A Sarabhai, and year-long celebrations, consisting of a host of national and international events would commence August 12, 2019.

ISRO had earlier said Chandrayaan-2 will be launched in a window from January-February 16, 2019. Sources said it is expected by the middle of next month but no date has been finalised.

"We are all trying hard. Definitely, it should be possible to launch the mission in February," a senior ISRO official said. "There is no impediment. It's on track," the official said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) will launch GSAT-7A, an advanced geostationary communication satellite from Sriharikota at 4.10 pm today. &nbsp;

This satellite will give a boost to the Indian Air Force and other armed forces.

GSLV-F11 carrying 2,250kg GSAT-7A is scheduled to lift-off at 4.10pm from the second launch pad at the spaceport of Sriharikota, situated about 110 km from Chennai.

The mission life of the GSAT-7A, built by the Indian Space Research Organisation, is eight years.

The four liquid strap-ons and a solid rocket motor at the core form the first stage of the launch vehicle, while the second stage is equipped with high thrust engine using liquid fuel, the space agency said on its website.

The Cryogenic Upper Stage forms the third and final stage of the vehicle. The seventh launch of 2018 from Sriharikota marks the 69th mission of GSLV-F11 for ISRO.

The GSAT-11 will be positioned at 74-degree east longitude in geostationary orbit, ISRO said, adding that the satellite's two solar arrays and four antenna reflectors will be deployed in orbit subsequently.&nbsp;

The satellite will become operational after successful completion of all in-orbit tests.&nbsp;

The 28-hour countdown for the launch of earth observation satellite HysISalong with 30 satellites from eight countries on board <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/isro-to-launch-gsat-29-shortly-satellite-to-meet-communication-needs-of-remote-areas-177320">ISRO</a>'s trusted workhorse PSLV-C43 began at 5.58 AM on Wednesday.

The launch is scheduled at 9.58 am on Thursday from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh about 110 km from Chennai, said Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

"The countdown for the launch of PSLV-C43/HysIS mission started today at 05:58 hrs IST," it said.

The space agency said fuel filling of a PS4 stage (fourth stage) has been completed.

The Hyper Spectral Imaging Satellite (HysIS), an earth observation satellite developed by ISRO, is the primary satellite of the PSLV-C43 mission.

The mass of the spacecraft is about 380 kg, the space agency said adding that the satellite would be placed in 636 km-polar sun-synchronous orbits with an inclination of 97.957 degrees.

The primary goal of HysIS, whose mission life is five years, is to study the earth's surface invisible near infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The co-passengers of HysIS include 1 micro and 29 nanosatellites from eight different countries.

All these satellites have been commercially contracted for launch through ISRO's commercial arm Antrix Corporation Limited.

All the satellites would be placed in a 504 km orbit by PSLV-C43, the space agency said PSLV is a four-stage launch vehicle with alternating solid and liquid stages.

PSLV-C43, which is the 45th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), is the 'Core Alone' version of PSLV.

It is the lightest version of the launch vehicle. This will be ISRO's second launch in the month.

The space agency had launched its latest communication satellite GSAT-29 on board GSLV MkIII-D2 on November 14.

ISRO's PSLV-C43 all set to launch 31 satellites on Thursday

The satellite was launched by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its 45th flight PSLV-C43 along with 30 co-passenger satellites from the First Launch Pad (FLP) of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR Sriharikota.

The primary mission of the HysIS is to study the earth's surface in visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Besides this, the satellite is also designed to contribute to agriculture, forestry, geological environments, coastal zones and inland waters.

A media report also cited an ISRO offcial as saying that the earth observation satellite will help in monitoring air pollution from industries. 
 
With the launch of HysIS India has crossed the milestone of lifting and putting into orbit over 250 foreign satellites. India has till date put into orbit 269 foreign satellites.

Satellites of eight different countries including Australia, Canada, Malaysia, Columbia, Finland, Netherlands, Spain, USA were launched&nbsp;along&nbsp;with the HysIS.&nbsp;

One of the important features of the launch is that the satellite was put in two different orbits, one at a higher altitude and the others in a lower one.
