Netanyahu also held up a pager while lauding IDF’s actions in Lebanon against Hezbollah. This was a reference to Israel’s attack on September 17, 2024, when it remotely detonated hundreds of pagers that had been distributed to Hezbollah fighters. At least 12 people were killed in this attack, whereas over 3,000 others were injured. The Turkish President Recep Erdogan was also at the receiving end of Netanyahu’s ire. Calling him a tyrant, he accused Turkiye of becoming a super spreader of anti-Semitic lies and harbouring Hamas leaders. Ankara hit back, calling these allegations baseless and malicious.Netanyahu raked up the colonial past of UK and France to slam their recent move to ban import of all goods produced in West Bank’s Israeli settlements.Meanwhile, about hundred protesters, including US actress Susan Sarandon, were detained by the New York police for staging a sit-in to demand an end to US arms supplies to Israel. This comes in the wake of the Trump administration reportedly recently approving the sale of 40,000 highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs and other munition to Israel, worth 2.8 billion dollars. But you see, all is not well between Trump and Netanyahu. Far from it.In fact, things have reached a point where Netanyahu could not get a meeting with US President Donald Trump, unlike last year, in another setback for the Israeli prime minister.Reports attributed this to Trump’s extreme frustration with Netanyahu, who had promised a quick and easy war against Iran.In fact, very significantly, Netanyahu’s growing isolation was also referred to by Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.Speaking at a conference a few days earlier, Kushner claimed that US had used global pressure on Israel following its strike on Qatar last year, to push a reluctant Netanyahu to accept the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.Remember, in the New Delhi declaration, BRICS supported the creation of an independent state of Palestine, comprising the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It also expressed deep concern over continued violence in Gaza despite the ceasefire and urged Israel to withdraw its troops from Lebanon. Also, what do the Israelis feel about Netanyahu’s UNGA address? It’s a mixed bag. While some praised his defence of Israel’s policies, others contended that his speech was meant for the domestic audience ahead of polls. As Netanyahu continues to face flak, this is bad news for the leader, coming right ahead of the election, as he seeks a record seventh term as PM.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets, waving Palestinian flags and carrying banners. Protesters called out Israel’s war in Gaza and questioned why Netanyahu had been allowed to address the UN.

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon approached an Iranian diplomat at the UN General Assembly on Thursday (Sep 24) and attempted to hand him a Starlink satellite internet terminal used moments earlier by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his speech. The exchange, captured on video and later posted by Danon on social media, showed the Iranian representative declining to engage and turning away as the Israeli envoy spoke to him.
Netanyahu slams Iran using Starlink device
During his fiery speech at the UNGA, Netanyahu assailed enemies and allies alike, sparking uproar in the chamber. Taking aim at Iran, the Israeli PM brandished a Starlink and commented that the device could help Iranians access information and communicate freely despite restrictions imposed by authorities.“This is a communications device that enables people to access the truth. That is what the Iranian regime fears. It spends billions to censor the internet.” He then told the assembly that he would leave it with the UN president so it could be passed to the Iranian delegation. “So when they inevitably defect, they too will be able to freely tell their story on social media,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu claimed that Iran’s leadership was particularly concerned about its population gaining access to the internet, portraying Starlink as a tool for freedom of thought and expression.Dozens of delegates walked out as the Israeli prime minister began speaking. Netanyahu responded by calling those who left “moral cowards” and used much of his address to defend Israel’s military actions and attack critics of the country. He also rejected accusations of genocide against Israel, saying: “Israel didn’t commit genocide. Israel prevented genocide.” His remarks came amid continued international criticism of Israel’s conduct in the Gaza conflict.
‘Take it and deliver it back to Tehran’
In a video that is now going viral, Danon can be heard offering the Starlink device to Iranian diplomat Nasser Asadi. “If you heard the Prime Minister, you would understand how useful it could be in helping the Iranian people gain their freedom after what you did to them,” Danon said.“Do you want to take it and deliver it back to Tehran? It could be very useful for people in Iran,” he added.Danon then said: “We love the Iranian people, and we pray for regime change in Iran. The day will come.”Asadi did not respond to the remarks and appeared to turn away from Danon. Danon later posted the footage online with the caption: “The Iranian representative didn’t want the starlink.”
Iran’s months-long internet blackout
The exchange referred to a major internet shutdown in Iran earlier this year. Global internet access in the country was disrupted for nearly three months during a crackdown that followed protests in January. Access began to return in late May after an 88-day blackout, according to reporting at the time.Iran has also restricted Starlink, which uses satellites to provide internet connectivity without relying on conventional terrestrial networks. Reports however suggest that Starlink equipment has nevertheless been brought into the country despite those restrictions.

Israel says it has killed several Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon despite an existing ceasefire, while reporting that an Israeli soldier was injured during operations. The Israeli military says it will continue targeting what it describes as Hezbollah threats inside a security zone.

The developments come as the United Nations voices concern over Israeli military actions, particularly after large-scale explosions near the UNESCO-listed Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, Hezbollah continues to reject calls for disarmament despite a U.S.-backed framework agreement aimed at reducing hostilities.

U.S. Running Out of Missiles? Israel-Hezbollah Clash Escalates Amid Iran War

Before its recent wars with Iran and against Hezbollah in Lebanon, Israel’s air defence systems were considered by military experts as among the best, if not the best, in the world. However, as per experts, the recent wars and conflicts have exposed vulnerabilities in Israel’s defences, especially against drone attacks. Amid Iran’s growing drone attacks against American targets across West Asia, Israel’s government is reportedly considering a total ban on the use of civilian drones in Israeli airspace. According to Israel’s N12 news, the reason is the growing fears of a potential Iranian attack against Israel. The report cited an Israeli security cabinet meeting at which the issue was discussed. The consideration of a total ban is reportedly due to the lack of effective counter-drone technologies in Israel, with concerns that an Iranian or Hezbollah attack would involve an increased use of drones. And there is recent history to this. Back in May, under a barrage of daily Hezbollah drone attacks, Israel’s defence forces reportedly started deploying hundreds of mesh nets to entangle and stop incoming Hezbollah first-person view drones. In fact, according to local media reports, Israel defence ministry in June reported that successful drone interception against Hezbollah drones stood at just 50%. https://www.wionews.com/videos/israel-mulls-national-drone-ban-after-iran-claims-to-have-tripled-drone-production-1784914914777/embed So, amid the possibility of intense Iranian or Hezbollah drone attacks and uncertainties surrounding its countermeasures could Israel be limiting its airspace to identify and neutralise hostile drones more effectively? At the same time, Iran is claiming to have launched a series of drone attacks against American targets in West Asia. On wednesday, for example, the IRGC claimed to have struck US-linked targets in Bahrain as well as Jordanian air bases with explosive drones. Earlier this month, in a post on X, Iran’s acting defence minister claimed the country had tripled its production of drones and further stating that Iranian drone operations had helped the country “identify the enemy’s weak points.” So, as Iran ramps up its drone production, Israel’s recent battlefield experiences appear to have impacted its domestic policies as well.

Back in May, Israel’s defence forces started deploying hundreds of mesh nets to entangle and stop incoming Hezbollah first-person view drones. Local media said the Israeli defence ministry reported a successful drone interception against Hezbollah drones of just 50% in June.
