The United Nations nuclear watchdog has said that the rate at which Iran can enrich uranium is "increasingly dramatic."

“Today (Dec 6), the agency is announcing that the production capacity is increasing dramatically of the 60 per cent inventory,” Rafael Grossi, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA said in an interview with the news agency Reuters.

He added that the quantity is set to rise "seven times more" and even more. Previously, the rate was five to seven kg a month.

Grossi's remarks came after the IAEA confirmed on November 29 that Iran plans to install approximately 6,000 additional centrifuges to enhance uranium enrichment.

According to a report by AFP, these centrifuges at the Fordo and Natanz facilities would enable Iran to enrich uranium to levels of up to five per cent, exceeding the 3.67 per cent cap set under the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes. However, the IAEA has pointed out that Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium to a level as high as 60 per cent.

Iran is looking at this week's ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah as an opportunity to rebuild the Lebanon-based militant group, according to a report by the Washington Post.

The report, citing sources, said that the truce gives Iran a chance to reassess and regroup its most powerful proxy in the region and attempt to reestablish its deterrent capabilities.

As per the newspaper, Hezbollah was hoping for more support from Iran's other proxies present in the region at the time when Israel launched its military campaign against its sites across Lebanon.

“Lebanon was at its most vulnerable during heavy bombings, yet support from other members of the resistance axis, including Yemen and Iraq, was minimal at best,” one of the sources close to Hezbollah was quoted as saying.

During the war, Israel delivered several crushing blows to Hezbollah by killing the group's long-standing leader in September, along with other high-ranking officials.

“Iran is prepared to allocate funds for reconstruction and to ensure Hezbollah’s survival, as well as to maintain support within the Shiite community,” the source added according to the report.

Iran Plans To Install 6,000 Centrifuges To Enrich Uranium: IAEA

Iran has urged the European Union (EU) to change its "irresponsible behaviour" towards Tehran following discussions with a senior EU diplomat in Geneva on Friday (Nov 29).

Iran has urged the European Union (EU) to change its "irresponsible behaviour" towards Tehran following discussions with a senior EU diplomat in Geneva on Friday (Nov 29). Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's deputy foreign minister, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the EU had been asked to "abandon its self-centred and irresponsible behaviour towards issues and challenges of this continent and international matters." The statement came after the Iranian delegation met Enrique Mora, the deputy secretary general of the EU’s foreign affairs department. Key talks with Britain, France, and Germany on horizon The talks took place ahead of a separate meeting between Britain, France, and Germany with Iranian representatives to address Iran's nuclear programme. However, few details about the agenda were disclosed by the countries’ foreign ministries. Also read: Mexican president says 'no tariff war' in future with US On Thursday, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, and Gharibabadi also held discussions with Mora. Mora later commented on X that the meeting involved a "frank exchange" on several issues, including Iran's military support to Russia, which he said "has to stop," the need for a diplomatic resolution to Iran's nuclear activities, regional tensions, and human rights concerns. UN nuclear watchdog says Iran to install thousands of new centrifuges In a related development, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed on Friday that Iran plans to install approximately 6,000 additional centrifuges to enhance uranium enrichment. According to a report cited by AFP, these centrifuges at the Fordo and Natanz facilities would enable Iran to enrich uranium to levels of up to five per cent, exceeding the 3.67 per cent cap set under the 2015 nuclear agreement. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes. However, the IAEA has pointed out that Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state enriching uranium to a level as high as 60 per cent. Israel would do "everything" to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated on Thursday that Israel would do "everything" to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. This statement followed remarks from Iranian diplomat Abbas Araghchi, who warned that Iran might reconsider its ban on developing nuclear weapons if Western sanctions continue. In an interview with The Guardian published on Thursday, Araghchi expressed frustration over unmet commitments, such as the lifting of sanctions, which has sparked internal debate in Tehran over a possible shift in its nuclear policy. Also read: Thanksgiving bomb threats target multiple Dems in the US state of Connecticut “We have no intention to go further than 60 per cent for the time being, and this is our determination right now,” Araghchi said. However, he elaborated, “there is this debate going on in Iran, and mostly among the elites… whether we should change our nuclear doctrine,” as the current approach has proven "insufficient in practice." The 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major world powers sought to ease sanctions on Tehran in return for curbs on its nuclear activities to prevent weapon development. However, the deal has faced repeated challenges and setbacks, leaving its future uncertain. (With inputs from agencies)

Iran's foreign minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has warned that the country’s internal debate on nuclear policy could shift towards developing nuclear weapons if Western nations proceed with threats to reinstate all UN sanctions.

Iran's foreign minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, has warned that the country’s internal debate on nuclear policy could shift towards developing nuclear weapons if Western nations proceed with threats to reinstate all UN sanctions. In an interview, Araghchi said that Iran already possesses the capability and expertise to produce nuclear weapons but stressed that such weapons are not part of its security strategy. He also confirmed Iran’s continued support for Hezbollah in Lebanon. European negotiators want confrontation Speaking ahead of a meeting between Iranian and European negotiators in Geneva, Araghchi described the talks as a “brainstorming session” aimed at breaking the current deadlock. However, he expressed doubts about the outcome, admitting he was pessimistic about whether Iran was engaging with the right parties. Araghchi accused European nations of pursuing confrontation. He referred to a recent meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where a European-backed resolution criticised Iran for failing to cooperate with inspectors and building a uranium stockpile with no apparent civilian use. Also read: Trump says Mexico agreed to 'stop' migration; Mexican President clarifies He claimed that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi had initially agreed to halt the censure motion after Iran proposed capping uranium enrichment at 60% purity and allowing four inspectors access to its nuclear sites. “He failed because the Europeans had decided on the course of confrontation,” Araghchi alleged. Iran wants 'dignified resolution through cooperation' “We have no intention to go beyond 60% for now, and this is our current determination,” he said. “We still aim for a dignified resolution to this issue through cooperation.” However, he admitted growing domestic dissatisfaction with Iran’s nuclear engagement with the West. “There is a debate in Iran—among elites and ordinary citizens—over whether our nuclear policy has been a mistake,” he said. “We did everything they asked, but when it was time for them to lift sanctions, they didn’t. This has led many to question whether our approach has been wrong.” Araghchi warned that if European countries reimpose UN sanctions, it would reinforce this sentiment. “If sanctions are reimposed, it will convince everyone in Iran that our nuclear doctrine has been flawed,” he said. He added that such a move could lead to a major crisis. “After years of negotiation and compliance, Iran could find itself back under Chapter Seven of the UN charter. If that happens, many will believe we need to change direction.” (With inputs from agencies)

Expressing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that India has been in regular touch with both Israel and Iran to "advocate constraints" and "enhance communication" in an attempt to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

In his opening remark at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, Italy, the Foreign Minister reiterated India's strong condemnation of terrorism, and the abduction of hostages by Hamas, and affirmed support for reaching a ceasefire.

Jaishankar, however, also emphasised the need to abide by international humanitarian law and called large-scale civilian casualties "unacceptable."

"Today I focus my remarks on the conflicts. The situation in the Middle East is obviously deeply concerning, both for what has happened and what may still come. India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage-taking. It also regards large-scale civilian casualties in military operations to be unacceptable. International humanitarian law cannot be disregarded in immediate terms. We should all support a ceasefire," EAM Jaishankar said.

Shifting his focus on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the EAM emphasised "serious destabilising consequences" including the challenge faced by the Mediterranean.

He reiterated India's stand on the situation and said that the disputes in this era cannot be settled by war but only through dialogue and diplomacy.

"Addressing the conflict in Ukraine is the other urgent imperative of our times. It is well into its third year. The continuation of this conflict has serious destabilising consequences, including for the Mediterranean. What is clear is that no solution is going to emerge from the battlefield. India has consistently held the view that disputes in this era cannot be settled by war. There must be a return to dialogue and diplomacy. The sooner the better. This is a widespread sentiment in the world today, especially in the Global South," Jaishankar said.

He further noted PM Modi's efforts with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to find common ground in an attempt to end the nearly three-year-long conflict.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally engaged leaders of both Russia and Ukraine to this end. this has included his visit to Moscow and Kyiv. Our senior officials remain in continuous touch. We firmly believe that those who have the ability to explore finding common ground must step up to that responsibility," Jaishankar said.

Jaishankar further called for a "closer and stronger" relationship between India and the Mediterranean in the new era of "re-globalising, rebalancing and multi-polarity."

"We are today on the threshold of a new era. It is one of re-globalising, rebalancing and multi-polarity. It is also a more technology-centered future with a premium on the mobility of talent and greener growth. Opportunities in this world are as indivisible as anxieties. A closer and stronger relationship between India and the Mediterranean will serve both of us," he added.

"A range of regional and international issues and topics, including the issues of Palestine and Lebanon, as well as the nuclear issue, will be discussed," the spokesman said in a foreign ministry statement.

Baghaei described the upcoming meeting as a continuation of talks held with the countries in September on the sidelines of the annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

On Thursday, the 35-nation board of governors of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution denouncing Iran for what it called a 'lack of co-operation'.

The move came as tensions ran high over Iran's atomic programme, which critics fear is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon, something Tehran has repeatedly denied.

It also came after IAEA head Rafael Grossi returned from a trip to Tehran, where he appeared to have made headway.

During the visit, Iran agreed to an IAEA demand to cap its sensitive stock of near weapons-grade uranium enriched up to 60 per cent purity.

In response to the resolution, Iran announced it was launching a "series of new and advanced centrifuges".

Centrifuges enrich uranium transformed into gas by rotating it at a very high speed, increasing the proportion of fissile isotope material (U-235).

"We will substantially increase the enrichment capacity with the utilisation of different types of advanced machines," Behrouz Kamalvandi, Iran's atomic energy organisation spokesman, told state TV.

The country, however, also said it planned to continue its "technical and safeguards cooperation with the IAEA".

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in power since July and a supporter of dialogue with Western countries, has said he wants to remove "doubts and ambiguities" about his country's nuclear programme.

In 2015, Iran and world powers reached an agreement that saw the easing of international sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

But the United States unilaterally withdrew from the accord in 2018 under then-president Donald Trump and reimposed biting economic sanctions, which prompted Iran to begin rolling back on its own commitments.

Tehran has since 2021 decreased its cooperation with the IAEA by deactivating surveillance devices monitoring the nuclear programme and barring UN inspectors.

At the same time, it has increased its stockpiles of enriched uranium and the level of enrichment to 60 per cent.

That level is close, according to the IAEA, to the 90 per cent-plus threshold required for a nuclear warhead, and substantially higher than the 3.67 per cent limit it agreed to in 2015.
