Iran's supreme leader Khamenei warns 'foreign enemies' may target workers as protests rage

A fortnight after Iran admitted to having delivered drones to Russia, the two countries are said have reached an agreement to manufacture the unmanned weaponised aircraft on Russian soil, says a report by The Washington Post.

"Russian and Iranian officials finalised the deal during a meeting in Iran in early November, and the two countries are moving rapidly to transfer designs and key components that could allow production to begin within months," the publication reported while quoting three anonymous officials.

The deal will help Russia increase its stockpile of weapons of destruction that have seemingly changed the tide in the war.

The report added that once the deal is finalised, it will deepen the Russia-Iran alliance which has only grown stronger in the recent months.

Iran strikes deal to manufacture drones on Russian soil for Ukraine war: Report

Amid the ongoing protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who allegedly died after being detained by Tehran's morality police, reports suggest that the middle eastern nation has given death threats to citizens in Canada and the United Kingdom who have been vocal about the incident.

On Friday, Canada’s spy agency the, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in a statement said that they are investigating reports of people who have received “credible” death threats from Iran which are “designed to silence those who speak out publicly” against them. “CSIS is actively investigating several threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence,” it said.

The statement which was first reported by CBC said that the agency is also working closely with Iranian-Canadian communities which are allegedly being “disproportionately” targeted. Notably, Canada has imposed several sanctions against Tehran over alleged human rights abuses, including the death of Mahsa Amini.

Meanwhile, in the UK, at least seven armed vehicles have been deployed outside Iran International television studios in west London after two of its UK-based journalists were threatened by Tehran.

Reportedly, they received “severe and credible” threats for their coverage of the ongoing protests on the UK-based Persian language media company. The channel has been dubbed as a “terrorist” organisation by the regime, said a report by AFP.

While speaking to the news agency, the media outlet’s spokesperson also said that the threats against them have escalated due to their 24-hour coverage of the protests in Iran. He also said that the presence of the armoured vehicles was a “massive deterrence” which has reassured the employees.

This comes days after the British intelligence agency, MI5 director general Ken McCallum said that the growing threat from Iran “most frequently crosses into terrorism,” which has made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone, as reported by WION earlier.

Furthermore, the spy chief had also indicated that the British police had warned the two journalists about “an imminent, credible and significant risk to their lives and those of their families.” Meanwhile, the British foreign secretary, James Cleverly had previously said that he had summoned Iranian charge d'affaires after the UK-based journalists “were subject to immediate threats to life from Iran.”

Canadian spy agency probes death threats by Iran, UK deploys armoured vehicles outside news studio

The Iranian regime has once again unleashed its fury on the protesters. According to reports that have come in, at least about three protesters are reported to being killed by the Iranian Security Forces.

Iran: Protests continue to rage, accuses US, Israel and UK of fomenting the unrest

Iran's security forces shot dead three people on Saturday (November 19), a rights group has said. The shootings took place in the western province of Kurdistan. This has added to the toll of the deadly protests that erupted in the Islamic republic after Mahsa Amini's death.

Iran has been rocked by nationwide protests after custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She was taken into custody by Iran's morality police over 'inappropriate' attire.

The protests against her death have been going around for weeks and have now become the greatest challenge to the regime. The authorities have responded with a crackdown that Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights says has left dead at least 342 people dead, half a dozen already sentenced to death and more than 15,000 arrested.

On Saturday, Hengaw, a Norway-based rights group which monitors abuses in Kurdish areas, told AFP that "the government's repressive forces opened fire on protesters in the town of Divandarreh, killing at least three civilians".

Protesters have been killed in 22 of Iran's 31 provinces, IHR said Wednesday, including 123 in Sistan-Baluchistan and 32 in Amini's home province of Kurdistan.

Activists have largely accused Iran's security forces of carrying out secret burials of protesters they have killed, to prevent more violence from flaring at their funerals.

Iran: Three protesters shot dead in Mahsa Amini's home province, toll goes further up

Just a day after Iran was criticised for lack of co-operation, Western countries on Friday (November 18) urged Iran to take "essential and urgent" action on issues raised by United Nations' nuclear watchdog. On Thursday, Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency's board of governors passed a resolution that targetted Iran.

USA and world powers struck a nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, but former US president Donald Trump took the US out of the deal. Talks are on to restore the deal but an impasse has been reached over the issue of undeclared Uranium particles.

"The board has sent a clear message that it is essential and urgent that Iran fulfils its (non-proliferation treaty)-required safeguards obligations," said France, Germany, Britain and the United States in a joint statement.

The nations urged Iran to "take the actions specified without delay".

The non-proliferation treaty is an international agreement aimed at preventing the spread of atomic weapons.

The same countries had brought the resolution at the IAEA, which was the second of its kind within six months regarding a lack of "technically credible" answers provided by Iran.

The watchdog has been pressing Iran to explain the presence of undeclared man-made uranium found at three sites, calling for "access to locations and material" as well as the collection of samples.

Western powers accuse Iran of seeking to build nuclear weapons, something that Tehran has always denied.

In Friday's statement, the Western powers welcomed the latest resolution and urged Iran to explain the presence of the particles.

"We hope Iran takes this opportunity to cooperate with the IAEA in good faith toward closing these outstanding matters," it said.

West asks Iran to cooperate with IAEA

Azerbaijan has finally decided to open an embassy in Israel following a parliamentary approval on Friday and will thus become the first Shi’ite Muslim-majority state to do so. The news comes amid increasingly strained ties between Azerbaijan and Iran, Israel’s longtime nemesis.

Azerbaijan already has a tourism office and a trade representative office in Israeli capital Tel Aviv where it will open its embassy also, reported the Jerusalem Post.
Israel and Azerbaijan have relations for 30 years, and there has been an Israeli embassy in Baku since 1993.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid praised the decision, calling Azerbaijan “an important partner of Israel and home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the Muslim world.”
“The decision to open an embassy reflects the depth of the relations between the countries. This move is the fruit of efforts by the Israeli government to build strong diplomatic bridges with the Muslim world,” he added.

Iran and Azerbaijan share a 420-mile border, and there have been several speculations that Israel launched covert operations in Iran from its northern neighbour.
Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian even accused Israel of having “established its presence in Azerbaijan”.

Iran had staged military drills along the border following which Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev got himself photographed with Israeli Harop kamikaze drones produced in his country. Tehran has held more military drills on the border in recent weeks.

Azerbaijan had been hesitant to open an embassy in the past, as it did not want to ruffle other Muslim-majority states or provoking Iran.

Israel and Azerbaijan have close defence ties as Jerusalem supplied drones to Baku, which were used in its war against Armenia. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute found that 69% of Azerbaijan’s arms imports in 2016-2020 came from Israel while about 40% of petroleum imported to Israel comes from Azerbaijan.

Prime Minister Yair Lapid praised the decision, calling Azerbaijan “an important partner of Israel and home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the Muslim world.” “The decision to open an embassy reflects the depth of the relations between the countries. This move is the fruit of efforts by the Israeli government to build strong diplomatic bridges with the Muslim world,” he added. The expulsion of more than 400 suspected Russian spies across Europe was a “significant strategic blow” to Moscow, a top British intelligence official said on Wednesday.

Ken McCallum, the director general of the country’s security services (MI5), made the remarks at the annual update on the threats to the UK.

The spy chief also said that Britain faces major security threats from Russia, China and Iran.

The MI5 chief said that his agency has blocked more than 100 attempts by the Kremlin to send suspected spies since the nerve agent poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, UK in 2018.

Reportedly, this incident prompted a wave of diplomatic expulsions.

Recently, a significant number of Russian officials had been expelled from across the world including over 600 from Europe, at least 400 of whom were suspected to be spies.

“In the UK’s case, since our removal for 23 Russian spies posing as diplomats, we have refused on national security grounds over 100 diplomatic visa applications”, said McCallum at the MI5 headquarters in London.

He added, “that the UK must be ready for Russian aggression for years to come.”

The recent expulsions have also “struck the most significant strategic blow against the Russian Intelligence Services in recent European history.

And together with coordinated waves of sanctions, the scale has taken (Russian President Vladimir) Putin by surprise.”

The UK has also been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine among other western countries in light of the ongoing Russian invasion, and it was important especially when Moscow made “silly claims” about Britain's blowing up the Nord Stream gas pipelines, said the MI5 chief.

McCallum also went on to address the growing threat from Iran as the state that “most frequently crosses into terrorism.”

He spoke about how the country’s “aggressive intelligence services” made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone.

This comes a week after Iran’s deputy ambassador was summoned by the UK’s Foreign Office over allegations that two London-based journalists were facing death threats from state-backed agents for their reporting on the protests in Tehran.

The British police had reportedly warned the two journalists about “an imminent, credible and significant risk to their lives and those of their families.”

Addressing China, McCallum said that “the activities of the Chinese Communist Party pose the most game-changing strategic challenge to the UK” and said that the country is “playing the long game in cultivating contacts to manipulate opinion” in Beijing’s favour. The contacts he is referring to are not just prominent lawmakers across the country’s political landscape but also local councillors and their goal is to gradually build “a debt of obligation,” said the MI5 chief.

McCallum also accused Beijing of monitoring and intimidating the Chinese nationals in the UK, who is also “forcibly repatriating” them to harassment and assault. He believes that these activities may grow with time, especially since Chinese President Xi Jinping has consolidated power on an “indefinite basis.”

This comes after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called China a “systemic challenge” to the country’s values and interests, and “represents the biggest state-based threat to our economic security.”

“We are facing adversaries who have massive scale and are not squeamish about the tactics they deploy,” he said while talking about the risk of Russia, China and Iran helping each other to amplify their strengths, said McCallum.

Meanwhile, the threat that terrorism poses still remained at the forefront with the McCallum saying that they had disrupted at least 37 “late stage” attack plots since 2017, eight of them since last June. “We are seeing growing numbers of right-wing extremist influencers, operating globally, fuel grievances and amplify conspiracy theories,” said the MI5 chief.

The hardline Islamic regime of Iran has sworn a brutal crackdown on protesters. But despite that protesters aren't backing down. This is causing an ugly bloodbath in the country. Both demonstrators and security forces are being shot down. This leads to a bigger question - is the government of Iran feeling cornered?

In a latest incident, the Iranian Security Forces opened fire on people at a metro station in Tehran. The forces used batons to hit women who were not following the country's strict dress code.

Two protesters were shot dead by Iranian security forces on Tuesday, as the nationwide protests in the aftermath of the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini reached a new peak.

Two protesters were shot dead by Iranian security forces on Tuesday, as the nationwide protests in the aftermath of the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini reached a new peak. According to a rights group based in Norway named Hengaw, the incident took place when protesters gathered to commemorate those killed during the bloody 2019 crackdown. It was the third anniversary of Bloody Aban, also called Bloody November when an overnight fuel price hike led to street violence and a total breakdown of the civil order that lasted for days. "The government forces have directly opened fire in most of the cities where uprisings have taken place, such as Sanandaj, Kamyaran and Kermanshah," the group was quoted as saying by AFP. "Two people have been killed by direct fire from government forces in Sanandaj and Kamyaran," it added. WATCH | Court in Iran issues first death sentence amid anti-hijab protests × The city of Sanandaj remained the focal point of the protests with demonstrators burning tyres on the street and chanting anti-government slogans. Notably, the death of the two protesters comes a day after an Iranian court issued the first death sentence linked to recent protests. Reportedly, the protester was convicted of “enmity against God” and “spreading corruption on Earth". As reported by WION, since the beginning of the month, the Iranian forces have taken a rather violent and cruel approach towards the protesters. The United Nations (UN) on Tuesday (November 15) urged Iran government to immediately release peaceful protesters who have been detained by authorities in the country. The Islamic republic has been rocked by protests for many weeks.

The protests started when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of country's morality police who had detained her for wearing 'inappropriate' attire. Amini died in September. The protests that started at the time are going on even now. Iranian authorities have responded with crackdown.

The UN Human Rights Office said one protester had already been sentenced to death.

"We urge the authorities to immediately release all those detained in connection to peaceful protests, and to drop the charges against them," spokesman Jeremy Laurence told reporters in Geneva.

"Human rights law protects the rights of people to peaceful assembly and to freedom of expression."
Laurence said more than 1,000 indictments had been issued against those arrested in connection with protests in Tehran province alone.

"Instead of opening space for dialogue on legitimate grievances, the authorities are responding to unprecedented protests with increasing harshness," he said.

One protester has been handed death penalty till now. The death penalty has been handed for "waging war against God" and "corruption on Earth". At least nine others have been charged with offences which carry the death penalty.

"Crimes not resulting directly and intentionally in death can never serve as the basis for the imposition of the death penalty," Laurence said.

"We therefore call on the Iranian authorities to immediately impose a moratorium on the death penalty, to refrain from charging capital crimes, and to revoke death sentences issued for crimes not qualifying as the most serious crimes."

Release peaceful protesters, UN urges Iran

The European Union has decided to impose a new round of sanctions on Iranian officials who were accused of repression of protests following the death of Mahsa Amini. "Foreign ministers adopted further sanctions against 29 individuals & 3 entities in #Iran due to their role in the death of #MahsaAmini and the violent response to ongoing demonstrations," the EU tweeted.

Iran handed out its first death penalty over the protests that have rocked the nation following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. An unnamed accused was sentenced to death by a court in Tehran over “setting fire to a government building, disturbing public order, assembly and conspiracy to commit a crime against national security”, as well as for being “an enemy of God and corruption on earth”

According to the official judiciary website Mizan Online, similar charges exist against several other accused and considering Iran’s record on capital punishment, they are also expected to face similar punishments. As of now, Iran is only behind China when it comes to handing out death penalties.

The judgements have caused panic among the human rights groups in Iran who have predicted hard actions from the authorities and death sentences for some well-known social activists.

Another Tehran court handed prison sentences between five to 10 years to people who were charged for “gathering and conspiring to commit crimes against national security and disturbing public order”.

Amini was detained by Iran’s morality police for flouting the hijab law and later, she was found dead with post-mortem reports showing injuries to her head and body. It resulted in wide-spread protests all around the country with women burning their hijabs and cutting their hair in public.

Following the protests, Reuters reported that over 2000 people have been charged with various offenses and most of them have already been sentenced to life in prison. The death toll has also increased in the past few days with Iran Human Rights putting the number somewhere around 350.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday (November 14) said any new proposal will not help revive a nuclear deal with Iran and that a "new framework" would likely be needed. He was speaking with France Inter radio.

He was asked whether he believed talks on aimed at renewing an agreement between Tehran and world powers could be revived after significant setbacks in recent months, Macron said: "I would still be very cautious."

"I don't think there will be new proposals which can be made right now [to save the nuclear deal]", he added.

A nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers in 2015. But former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took the US out of the deal. Talks to revive the deal have been on for more than a year but there has been little progress.

Macron pointed at the current political situation in protest-hit Iran. He said that 'fragilised' likelihood of reaching a deal with the country.

Iran nuclear deal: French President Macron does not see room for progress

United Nations Human Rights Council said on Monday (November 14) that it will hold an urgent, special session on Iran. The session will focus on deadly crackdown on protesters protesting Mahsa Amini's death. UNHRC said that the session will be held on November 24.

Mahsa Amini (22) was taken into custody by Iran's morality police for 'inappropriate' attire in the month of September. Her custidial death sparked a nationwide 'anti-hijab' protest which is going on even now. The protesters have even called for downfall of Islamic clerical regime. The government has almost always called protesters 'rioters' and have initiated a brutal crackdown.

UNHRC's announcement of a special session has come just a day after Iran's judiciary handed death sentence to an arrested protester for the first time.

So far, 44 countries, including 17 Council members, have backed the call, the body said.

Iran issues first death sentence to accused linked to 'anti-hijab' riots

An Iranian who got stuck for 18 years in a Paris airport, inspiring a Steven Spielberg movie starring Tom Hanks died on Saturday at the terminal, an airport official said.

Mehran Karimi Nasseri died of natural causes just before midday on Saturday in terminal 2F at Charles de Gaulle airport outside the French capital, the official told AFP.

Caught originally in an immigration trap -- unable to enter France and with nowhere to go -- he became dependent on his unusual place of abode and increasingly a national and international cause celebre.

He called himself "Sir Alfred", and a small section of airport parquet and plastic bench became his domain.

Karimi Nasseri's peculiar story came to the attention of Hollywood director Spielberg, inspiring 2004 film "The Terminal," which starred Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Hanks played a man who becomes trapped at New York's JFK airport when his home country collapses into revolution.

After spending most of the money he received for the film, Karimi Nasseri returned to the airport a few weeks ago, the official said.

Several thousand euros (dollars) were found on him.

Born in 1945 in Masjed Soleiman, in the Iranian province of Khuzestan, Karimi Nasseri, took up residence in the airport in November 1988 after flying from Iran to London, Berlin and Amsterdam in an effort to locate his mother.

He had been expelled from every other country he landed in because he was unable to produce the correct paperwork.

At Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport an informal support network grew up around him, providing food and medical help along with books and a radio.

In 1999 he was granted refugee status and the right to remain in France.

"I'm not quite sure what I want to do, stay at Roissy or leave," he said after being handed the right to live in France. "I have papers, I can stay here, I think I should carefully study all the options before making a decision."

He didn't leave then.

"He no longer wants to leave the airport," his lawyer Christian Bourguet said at the time. "He's scared of going."
