Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who on Saturday (Nov 11) landed in Saudi Arabia to attend a summit on the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, said that now was the time to take decisive action rather than mere talks.

"Gaza is not an arena for words. It should be for action," Raisi said at Tehran airport before departing for the summit of Arab and Islamic nations in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh.

"Today, the unity of the Islamic countries is very important," he added.

This marks the first visit by an Iranian head of state to Saudi Arabia since both Tehran and Riyadh called off decades-long hostility under a China-brokered deal in March.

"The summit will send a strong message to warmongers in the region and result in the cessation of war crimes in Palestine," Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who is accompanying Raisi, was quoted as saying by the Padolat government website.

"America says it doesn't want an expansion of the war and has sent messages to Iran and several countries [to this effect]. But these statements are not consistent with America's actions," Raisi said in the televised comments at Tehran airport.

“We kiss the foreheads and arms of the resourceful and intelligent designers [of the operation] and the Palestinian youth,” he added.

He also urged "the whole Islamic world" to support the Palestinians.&nbsp;

On Monday, her family members stated that Mohammadi had started her hunger strike to protest against the limits imposed on medical care for her and other inmates and the compulsion that she and other women were facing to cover their hair in public in the Islamic republic.

The friends and allies, who had collected to meet Mohammadi at the hospital, were "threatened and harassed by Islamic Republic Security forces," said her supporters on Thursday (Nov 9).

Mohammadi has refused to wear a hijab, which is a head covering that has been made obligatory for women in public areas since the 1979 Islamic Revolution took place in Iran, under any circumstances. She further took the oath to continue to refuse to wear the headscarf.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has begun a hunger strike in her Iranian prison in protest at limits on medical care for her and other inmates, as well as the obligation for women to wear the hijab in the Islamic republic, her family said on Monday.

Veteran rights activist Mohammadi, 51, currently held in Tehran's Evin prison, was awarded the Nobel prize in October "for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran".

"Narges Mohammadi, today, through a message from Evin Prison, has informed her family that she started a hunger strike several hours ago. We are concerned about Narges Mohammadi's physical condition and health," her family said in a statement.

Mohammadi is refusing under any circumstances to wear a hijab, the head covering which has been obligatory for women in public spaces since shortly after Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

Prison authorities in response have refused to transfer Mohammadi, who suffers from heart and lung conditions, to a hospital outside Evin for treatment.

The family said in the statement that she was in "urgent" need of medical treatment outside prison.

An Iranian mother who was demanding justice for her son, killed by security officials, has been sent to prison for 13 years

Mahsa Yazdani was found guilty on various charges which include blasphemy, incitement, insulting the supreme leader, and spreading anti-regime propaganda, human rights groups and family members said.

In the first five years of her prison sentence, Yazdani will not be granted parole, they said.

<h2>Jailed for 'insulting supreme leader'</h2>

According to Yazdani’s attorney Meysam Mousavi, she was given a five-year term for&nbsp; “blasphemy”, an additional five years of “incitement against national security”, two years for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran” and one more year for “spreading propaganda against the regime,” adding to a total of 13 years, the Independent outlet reported.

Yazdani was running an online campaign seeking justice for her 20-year-old son Mohammad Javad Zahedi, who was killed at an anti-regime protest in September 2022.

Zahedi was allegedly shot and wounded by security forces while protesting the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who had died in police custody after being detained for violating Iran’s mandatory headscarf law.

Zahedi died of his injuries after emergency services failed to treat him, Iran International reported.

A medical examiner’s report confirmed he was killed by numerous shotgun pellets.

Yazdani publicly condemned the regime and called for justice for her son and others killed in the demonstrations. She was later arrested in August from her home.

Hours after Yazdani’s conviction became public, her daughter, Mitra Zahedi, shared a post on Instagram that read: “What will happen to my three-year-old brother? Who is responsible for all this cruelty?”

The regime has been going hard on the protesters who were detained in the aftermath of the Amini agitation.

On October 17, Amini’s family lawyer Saleh Nikbakht was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of "propaganda activities against the system".

An Iranian mother who was demanding justice for her son, killed by security officials, has been sent to prison for 13 years Mahsa Yazdani was found guilty on various charges which include blasphemy, incitement, insulting the supreme leader, and spreading anti-regime propaganda, human rights groups and family members said. In the first five years of her prison sentence, Yazdani will not be granted parole, they said. Jailed for 'insulting supreme leader' According to Yazdani’s attorney Meysam Mousavi, she was given a five-year term for “blasphemy”, an additional five years of “incitement against national security”, two years for “insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran” and one more year for “spreading propaganda against the regime,” adding to a total of 13 years, the Independent outlet reported. Gravitas: Another Mahsa Amini? Was seeking justice for son killed in protest Yazdani publicly condemned the regime and called for justice for her son and others killed in the demonstrations. She was later arrested in August from her home. Israel-Palestine war | Israel: Destroyed surface-to-surface from Red Sea

Dr Iraj Elahi, Iran's ambassador to India, highlighted the significant potential of India to make a positive impact in the ongoing West Asia crisis amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict.

"India historically, and traditionally, considering its political potential, its role internationally, its rising economy, its rising influence in the world, can have a constructive role in this situation."

West Asia region is in turmoil due to the Israel-Hamas war that has left 1,400 Israelis and over 8000 Palestinians dead.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION’s diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, Elahi&nbsp;underlined that India's unique position as a nation with strong diplomatic ties to both Israel and the Islamic world gives it a unique opportunity.

"So India can, first of all, considering its good relations with Israel, it's good relations with Islamic world, can play a constructive role in reaching a ceasefire at this stage and stop the bloodbath in Palestine."

Elahi emphasised the importance of recognising the resilience of the Palestinian people and their right to exist and defend their homeland.

He noted that even with initiatives like the Abraham Accords, there's a need to acknowledge that the Palestinian issue is far from resolved.

Full interview:

WION: How does Iran view the ongoing situation in West Asia?

Iraj Elahi: The current situation is not good. We are witnessing an unfortunate phenomenon in West Asia. The atrocity of Zionist regime after the military operation of Hamas has continued every day. It is targeting people, hospitals, schools. So we are now witnessing a catastrophe, a massacre in the region. At the same time, we are seeing that mainstream media is trying to misinform people all over the world, especially in the west. They are trying to substitute the murderer with the victims. One cannot analyse the current situation without seeing or paying attention to the roots and the cause of the conflict or tension in the region.

For more than seven decades, a group of Jewish, you know we consider Zionist a group of Jewish, we are not against Jews. We believe that even some jews are against Zionist. So, a group of Zionist occupied Palestine, forced people to leave their motherland and even now they are trying to deprive them from their right of existence. So, according to international law, we should consider for them the right to defend. They can, they have the right to defend themselves, they have the right to defend their motherland. Hamas is trying to defend its motherland. Unfortunately, they are calling Hamas a terrorist group. Hamas is not a terrorist, Palestinians are not terrorists, they are defending themselves, they are defending families. They are defending the motherland. They are a resistance group. They are resistant. So they call Hamas terrorists to justify their atrocities against the people of Palestine, you know, after you know, these days, even Hamas declared that it's ready to stop or ceasefire, still ceaselessly Israel is continuing, continuing targeting innocent people in the region. So we believe that this conflict, I mean, the conflict, the case of Palestine should be solved by referring to the vote of the people of Palestine. It doesn't make any difference whether they are Muslim, they are Jews ,they are Christians. All the people of Palestine whose motherland was Palestine should declare there's willingness, about the there's govt. An artificial state, which is now called Israel, is trying to deprive people of the habitats of Palestine.

&nbsp;

WION: We have been hearing reports of Houthi joining the conflict. Do you see more countries getting involved?

Iraj Elahi: We hope not. But we hope that the atrocities of Zionist regime will stop. The crimes of Israel have made people all over the world, not only Muslims, angry. Nowadays you are witnessing demonstrations all over the world: Australia, USA, UK, European countries, Arab countries, Muslim countries and non Muslim countries. So Palestine issue,&nbsp;Palestinian case issue is not just an Islamic issue. The European countries tried to make it an Arab issue but it is not an Arab or Islamic issue, but an issue of humanity. It doesn't matter whether you are Muslim, you are Hindu, you are Buddhists, you are Christian, you are Jews, you know, a group of people, a group of Palestinian whole or who have the right to exist, are deprived from the motherland and Israel as a cancer is growing in the territory of Palestine and try to force the Palestinian people to the Sinai or Egypt or to Jordan.&nbsp;I am referring back to your question, I hope that the miscalculation of the US and the Zionist regime will be corrected, otherwise the people of the world will be angry, not just the region.

&nbsp;

WION: What is Iran's role in the current situation?

Iraj Elahi: Since the beginning of the (Iranian) revolution, we have supported Palestinian case, and submitted the Embassy of Israel to the Palestinian. We have supported them and done whatever we could. In the current situation, our foreign minister had shuttle diplomacy with different countries. He attended UNGA, and voted against Israel for the benefit of Palestine. So we are in close touch with different countries to encourage them and we do our best to reach for a ceasefire in the region and stop these blood baths in Palestine.

&nbsp;

WION: Do you think the Islamic world has failed the people of Palestine?

Iraj Elahi: The Islamic world’s hearts are with Palestine. But not only the Islamic world, the people of India. most of them who are not Muslim, have also supported Palestine. Recently I have received different messages which were angry and not satisfied with the situation in Palestine. They are saying that they are sad for the situation in Palestine.

&nbsp;

WION: The ongoing conflict has several layers. There's Hezbollah, as well as the situation of the hostages. What do you make out of the situation?

Iraj Elahi: I think, Israel believes that the Palestinian cause is now finished. Not Israel, but US also, with the Abraham accord, or Oslo or a different peace process, they thought that the resistance in Palestine finished. First of all, the world should accept that Palestinians are alive and survived and they are an active nation. They have the right to exist, and they have the right to defend their motherland. The case is their motherland. So, if all people, all stakeholder, I mean USA, European countries, Israel, Arab states reach to the point that Palestine is not finished, Palestinian are alive, they have survived. So when they reach this point, they come to the point that they should find a good solution, not just one -sided solution. All the solutions now are based on the ignorance of Palestinian, you know, they are just considering Israel and neglecting Palestinian. All the peace process or peace accords, Or peace plans were based on this concept. But if all stakeholders considered that Israel is something, Palestine is also a real issue, so they can have a settlement for the crisis.&nbsp;

WION: How do you see India's position in the ongoing situation?

Iraj Elahi:&nbsp; India, historically and traditionally, considering its political potential, its role internationally, its rising economy, its rising influence in the world, can have a constructive role in this situation.&nbsp;India calls itself the voice of the Global South. Palestine is part of the South. Palestinians are oppressed people,&nbsp;they lost their territory. So, India, considering its good relations with Israel and with the Islamic world, can play a constructive and strong role in reaching a ceasefire at this stage, and stopping the bloodbath in Palestine.

WION: Do you India's constructive role in resolving the crisis?

Iraj Elahi: It can play a constructive role if it wants, it wants it can. As a diplomat, I see this opportunity for India. It is a good opportunity for India to play a constructive role in this. Palestinian, Islamic world, don't&nbsp;have confidence in European or US because they are supporting Israel. India was the founder of the non aligned movement. India historically has supported Palestinians. You know, India did not vote for the establishment of Israel. So now, India can play a constructive role to reach a ceasefire, at least at this stage of the tension.

&nbsp;

WION: India is also helping out the Palestinian refugees as well.&nbsp;

Iraj Elahi: Yes, it is.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

WION: Speaking of India-Iran ties, can you give your assessment on the relationship, with context to the Chabahar port

Iraj Elahi:&nbsp; We in Iran have a balanced approach towards Asia. We want to have good relations with all countries in Asia. Unfortunately, in recent years, because of the sanctions, I can call them brutal sanctions of the US, our (India-Iran) relations have been impacted. We are in close&nbsp;talks with the Indian&nbsp;side and found different spheres and new grounds for improving our relation. Concerning the Chabahar port, there were some differences between Iranian viewpoint and Indian side, but recently, they have&nbsp;bridged the gap. And now according to the information, which I have received recently from Tehran, very soon, the agreement will be signed. And you know, Chabahar, is a gateway for India to get to the Eurasia countries into Europe. And the main point is that the north south international corridor is available. You know, it is not like another corridor, which is you know, something is just in there, in their mind. You know, it's real, you can see the railway network, you can see the ports,&nbsp;the trains are moving, carrying cargoes. So Iran and India have good,&nbsp;in my perspective, I believe that we will have good days in the future.

&nbsp;

WION: So, energy is something that was part of the conversation in the past. Do you hope that one day it will again be part of the conversation between India and Iran

Iraj Elahi: Iran, historically was the&nbsp;main supplier of oil to India and some refineries in India have been working on Iranian oil. Unfortunately, because of the sanction, India has stopped importing oil from Tehran. We express our readiness to restart selling oil to India. Despite the sanctions, we are exporting oil, to India’s neighbours. We can also deliver oil to India, which can also be extended to other areas like urea, petrochemical products, even agricultural products. Now, some kinds of goods are coming to India. And fortunately, despite the sanctions, the trade between Iran and India is good India is a strategic partner, a good partner of Iran, and we can move toward a stronger partnership.

Iran's Ambassador Iraj Elahi sees India's 'constructive' role in reaching ceasefire amid West Asia crisis

Jailed Iranian rights activist Narges Mohammadi who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2023 earlier this month, was able to smuggle out a letter thanking the award-giving body, on Tuesday (Oct 31). Mohammadi was given the prestigious award for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and the promotion of human rights and freedom for all.

The 51-year-old journalist and activist, has campaigned against the mandatory hijab for women in Iran and the death penalty. Tehran is currently among the worst countries for women’s rights. The award which was announced on October 6 is seen as a rebuke to Iranian leaders and a boost for anti-government protesters.&nbsp;

<h2>Chants of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’</h2>

The jailed activist is currently in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison where she is serving multiple sentences. Mohammadi has been detained by the Iranian regime on 13 occasions, received convictions on five occasions, and faced a cumulative sentence of 31 years in prison, along with 154 lashings.

The letter smuggled out of the prison was read by her 17-year-old daughter Kiana in a video posted on the Nobel Prize’s X page. It said that the news of her winning the Peace award was met with cries from her cellmates of “Woman, Life, Freedom”, the slogan of the movement of which she is part.

Mohammadi – in her first official reaction to winning the prestigious award – expressed her “deepest gratitude” to the Nobel Committee for recognising the “powerful and significant message".

“The power of protest demonstrated by the people of Iran in their evolutionary and social movements,” said the 51-year-old journalist. She said that the prize also marked a turning point in “empowering protest and social movements worldwide”.&nbsp;

In the letter, Mohammadi spoke about how people in countries in the Middle East like Iran and Afghanistan even before recognising and understanding the concepts of “freedom, democracy and human rights” through scholarly theories and scientific texts, understood their necessity due to their life experiences under “oppression and discrimination”.&nbsp;

"I am doing my duty to prevent Lebanon from entering the war" raging further south, Mikati told AFP in an interview.

Mikati expressed concerns that Lebanon’s powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah organisation’s skirmishes near the border could renew tensions with Israel and might possibly lead to war.

Mikati, who is considered to enjoy cordial relations with Hezbollah, said he has no "clear answer" about whether war loomed ahead, adding that "it depends on regional developments".

<h2>'Lebanon in the eye of the storm'</h2>

Mikati has inherited a country that is facing a major financial crisis and deep political divisions which have left the country without a president for a year.

In 2006, Israel and Hezbollah fought a bloody conflict that left more than 1,200 people dead in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 160 in Israel, mostly soldiers.

"For now, Hezbollah has managed the situation rationally and wisely, and the rules of the game have remained constrained to certain limits," Mikati said.

"But at the same time I feel like I cannot reassure Lebanese" because the situation is still developing, he added.

The 67-year-old fears that any escalation with Israel could devastate the entire Middle East.

"I cannot rule out an escalation because there is a race to reach a ceasefire before escalation spreads in the entire region," Mikati said.

The skirmish between Hezbollah and Israel has so far been restricted to the northern border region, with the Israeli military launching counterstrikes.

<h2>Qatar mediating&nbsp;</h2>

At least 62 people have been killed in Lebanon, AFP tally quotes, which includes mostly Hezbollah combatants, apart from four civilians, including a journalist.

Israeli officials have reported four deaths, including one civilian.

Apart from Hezbollah, which is believed to have a bigger arsenal than Lebanon's army, other Iran-backed or affiliated groups have also launched attacks on Israel from Syria and targeted US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.

Mikati further said that Qatar was playing "an important mediation role", and hoped for a better solution.

"Mediation almost succeeded last Friday, but was disrupted when the Israelis began ground operations in Gaza," he told AFP.

Lebanon’s caretaker PM says won’t let country get dragged into Israel-Hamas war due to Hezbollah

Iranian teenager Armita Garawand on Saturday (Oct 28) died a month after she fell into a coma after a disputed incident took place on Tehran's metro, reported the country's local media.

"Armita Garawand, a student in Tehran, died an hour ago after intensive medical treatment and 28 days of hospitalisation in intensive care," stated the Borna news agency, which has been affiliated with the country's youth ministry.

Weeks ago, the teenage girl had suffered injuries in a mysterious incident which took place inside the metro of Tehran while she was not wearing a head scarf.

<h2>Doctors claim a sudden drop in Geravand's blood pressure</h2>

For days, Geravand was hospitalised in Tehran and slipped into a state of coma. The 16-year-old girl was taken to a hospital in Tehran after she was found unconscious on the metro.

On October 3, the Kurdish-focused rights group Hengaw was the first one to report her case, stating that she was critically injured during an incident which took place on the underground train network.

However, the government authorities claimed that Geravand's blood pressure suddenly dropped and denied any "physical or verbal altercations" happened between her and other passengers.

The rights groups, meanwhile, claimed that the teenage girl was critically wounded after members of Iran's morality police allegedly assaulted her.

This incident took place just a year after Mahsa Amini's death, who was a young Iranian Kurd and was arrested by the morality police after she allegedly breached the strict dress code for women in Iran. The death of Mahsa Amini led to massive protests across the country.

The doctors were quoted as saying by Iran's Tasnim news agency on Saturday that Garawand had "suffered a fall resulting in brain damage followed by continued convulsions, a decline in brain oxygen and a cerebral oedema after a sudden drop in blood pressure".

<h2>Mystery shrouds Geravand's sudden health deterioration</h2>

However, what exactly happened to Armita Geravand after she entered the metro on October 1 remains a mystery.

Speaking to Iranian state television, an old friend of Geravand claimed that she hit her head on the platform of the station. The girl's father and mother also appeared in state media footage and claimed that a blood pressure drop, a fall or maybe both led to their daughter's injury.

However, activists across the world have alleged that Geravand may have been attacked or pushed for not wearing the head scarf or hijab.

Washington hits Iran-backed militant facilities in Syria in retaliation for strikes on US bases in Middle East

Around 900 more troops from the United States have arrived in the Middle East or are heading there to bolster air defences for the American military personnel amid a surge in attacks by Iran-affiliated groups, said the Pentagon on Thursday (Oct 26).&nbsp;

American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 16 times this month, said US officials. The update also comes a day after the Pentagon confirmed that a total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” following drone and rocket attacks on military bases in Iraq and Syria.

<h2>Rise in attacks</h2>

The latest attack, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told journalists, took place in the autonomous Kurdistan region in northern Iraq on Thursday. However, “no casualties” were reported and “some minor damage to infrastructure.”&nbsp;

Since October 17, “US and coalition forces have been attacked at least 12 separate times in Iraq (and) four separate times in Syria,” said Ryder, referring to the international coalition against the Islamic State.&nbsp;

When asked who is behind the attacks, he said, “We know that these are Iranian-backed militia groups that are supported by Iran and of course, we hold Iran responsible for these groups.”&nbsp;

This comes as tensions soar over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in the region. The attacks have led US troops to be constantly on alert. During a false alarm at Al-Asad air base in Iraq on Thursday, a civilian contractor died after a cardiac arrest.

“Between Oct. 17-18, 21 US personnel received minor injuries due to drone attacks at Al Assad Airbase, Iraq, and Al-Tanf Garrison, Syria,” Ryder said on Wednesday (Oct 25). He added, “All members returned to duty.”

<h2>US to send troops, warships and fighter aircraft</h2>

Following the recent attacks, the US, in addition to sending troops – whose number is now in thousands – also deployed warships and fighter aircraft to the region since the conflict erupted on October 7 which includes two aircraft carriers in a bid to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of the war, Washington has been one of the biggest supporters of Israel with multiple high-ranking US officials, including President Joe Biden visiting the country in a show of support.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the US media also reported how the US military was taking new measures to protect its Middle East forces during this rise in attacks, the responsibility for a few of which has been claimed by Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iranian-backed militias.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing officials also said that the US is ramping up monitoring from guard towers on its military facilities; increasing security at base access points and increasing operations to counter potential incoming drones, rockets and missiles.&nbsp;

The US also plans to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and Patriot missile batteries, said the news agency. There are around 2,500 American troops in Iraq and some 900 in Syria as part of efforts to prevent a resurgence of IS.&nbsp;

US to send 900 troops to Middle East amid rise in attacks on its forces in Iraq and Syria

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has begun to rush its defensive systems into the war-torn region amid fears of broader escalation by Iran and its proxies.&nbsp;

The move by the United States to strengthen its defence capabilities comes after attacks targetting US troops in other parts of the Middle East injured nearly two dozen US personnel since Oct 18.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had also released a statement saying that the recent US deployments to the region were aimed at thwarting the assaults purportedly designed to widen the Israel-Hamas conflict.

"We're concerned about potential escalation. In fact, what we're seeing … is the prospect of a significant escalation of attacks on our troops and our people throughout the region," Austin told ABC's "This Week" programme. "If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict ... our advice is: don't."

<h2>US military under attack</h2>

Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq.

Ain al-Asad airbase, which hosts US and other international forces in western Iraq, was targeted by drones and missiles on October 19 evening. Multiple blasts were reportedly heard inside the base.

The attack came after rockets hit another military base hosting US forces near Baghdad’s international airport on Thursday, Iraqi police said.

A day before on Wednesday, US forces in Iraq were targeted in two separate drone attacks, with one causing minor injuries to a small number of troops even though the US military managed to intercept the armed drone.

At the same time, a drone hit US forces in Syria, resulting in minor injuries, while another one was brought down.

The spate of attacks on the US military in the Middle East comes amidst the Israel-Hamas war that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf.

<h2>900 US troops heading to Middle East</h2>

The Pentagon on Thursday said that about 900 additional US troops were either heading to the Middle East or had already arrived there to bolster air defences to protect US personnel amid a surge in attacks in the region.

"As part of our efforts to deter a broader conflict and further bolster U.S. force protection capabilities I can confirm that since our initial force posture announcement, approximately 900 troops have subsequently deployed or are in the process of deploying to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. These include forces that have been on 'prepare to deploy' orders and which are deploying from the continental United States," Pentagon Press Secretary Brigadier General, Patrick Ryder said.

"Deployed and deploying units include a terminal, high altitude area defence battery from Fort Bliss, Texas; Patriot Batteries from Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Patriot and Avenger batteries from Fort Liberty, North Carolina and associated air defence headquarters elements from Fort Bliss and Fort Cavazos, Texas," he added.

Earlier, the Pentagon had announced that Washington is sending an additional squadron of F-16 Fighting Falcon to work alongside an array of capabilities already sent by the United States to the region in recent days in order to further enhance the ability of US forces to defend themselves.

“Our message to any country or group thinking about trying to take advantage of this situation to widen the conflict is: Don't,” warned Pentagon Press Secretary Pat Ryder.

<h2>US sends THAAD, Patriot systems</h2>

The Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East.

In recent weeks, the United States has sent a significant amount of naval power to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships and about 2,000 Marines.

<h2>Biden warns Khamenei&nbsp;</h2>

US President Joe Biden warned Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against targeting US personnel in a rare message, the White House said on Thursday (Oct 26).

"There was a direct message relayed," White House spokesman John Kirby said at a news briefing, declining to elaborate.

On Wednesday, Biden said that he had warned Iran that the US would respond if its forces were targeted.

"My warning to the ayatollah was that if they continue to move against those troops, we will respond, and he should be prepared. It has nothing to do with Israel," he told reporters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Iran's state news agency IRNA, citing an unnamed source, stated that Washington had sent Tehran as well as its allies like Lebanese Hezbollah, messages saying that it wasn't seeking to escalate the war, urging them to exercise restraint.

"The United States cannot both send military equipment to the Israeli regime and take charge of managing the war with one hand, while issuing political messages with the other hand, and speak about its opposition to the expansion of the war," IRNA cited the unnamed source as saying, adding Iran's allies "act independently and are not subject to Tehran's orders."&nbsp;

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has begun to rush its defensive systems into the war-torn region amid fears of broader escalation by Iran and its proxies.

With an upsurge in violence across the West Bank, the Biden administration has begun to rush its defensive systems into the war-torn region amid fears of broader escalation by Iran and its proxies. "If any group or any country is looking to widen this conflict ... our advice is: don't." US military under attack Over the past week, American troops stationed in other parts of the Middle East—Iraq and Syria—have come under attacks. The spate of attacks on the US military in the Middle East comes amidst the Israel-Hamas war that has divided the Western nations and the Gulf. 900 US troops heading to Middle East The Pentagon on Thursday said that about 900 additional US troops were either heading to the Middle East or had already arrived there to bolster air defences to protect US personnel amid a surge in attacks in the region. US sends THAAD, Patriot systems The Pentagon said that it was deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and additional Patriot air defence missile system battalions to the Middle East. In recent weeks, the United States has sent a significant amount of naval power to the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers, their support ships and about 2,000 Marines. Biden warns Khamenei US President Joe Biden warned Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against targeting US personnel in a rare message, the White House said on Thursday (Oct 26). "There was a direct message relayed," White House spokesman John Kirby said at a news briefing, declining to elaborate. On Wednesday, Biden said that he had warned Iran that the US would respond if its forces were targeted. "My warning to the ayatollah was that if they continue to move against those troops, we will respond, and he should be prepared. It has nothing to do with Israel," he told reporters. Meanwhile, Iran's state news agency IRNA, citing an unnamed source, stated that Washington had sent Tehran as well as its allies like Lebanese Hezbollah, messages saying that it wasn't seeking to escalate the war, urging them to exercise restraint. "The United States cannot both send military equipment to the Israeli regime and take charge of managing the war with one hand, while issuing political messages with the other hand, and speak about its opposition to the expansion of the war," IRNA cited the unnamed source as saying, adding Iran's allies "act independently and are not subject to Tehran's orders." Iran’s elite Quds Force gave specialised military training to 500 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters in the weeks leading up to the October 7 terror attacks on Israel, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has claimed in a report.

Citing ‘people familiar with intelligence related to the assault’, the US-based newspaper claimed that the militants were trained by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards' elite forces in Iran in September.

The report noted that the modus operandi of Hamas was similar to the techniques used by the Iranian paramilitary groups.

The terrorists had paraglided into southern Israel after disabling Israeli observation posts in drone strikes, while some rode in on motorcycles—techniques commonly used by Iranian paramilitary groups, and not seen among Hamas till now, the WSJ report claimed.

<h2>US and Israel long suspected Iran's role</h2>

US and Israel have long accused Iran of helping Hamas to launch terror attacks that left more than 1,500 Israelis dead and over 200 taken as hostages.

But US officials have said they have no evidence that Iran was involved in the planning or execution

“Before the war, Iran directly assisted Hamas with money, training and weapons and technological know-how,” IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari told Times of Israel on Tuesday (Oct 24). “Even now, Iran is helping Hamas with intelligence.”

Tehran, which lauded the attack, has denied its involvement. Iran’s mission to the United Nations issued a statement calling the attack “fiercely autonomous and unwaveringly aligned with the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people.”

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly praised the massacre while at the same time denied the country’s role in the attack.

“We kiss the foreheads and arms of the resourceful and intelligent designers,”&nbsp;Khamenei said.

But he added: “Those who say that the recent saga is the work of non-Palestinians have miscalculated.”

Tehran has often boasted about an ironclad security coordination with Palestinian Islamist groups.

<h2>Statement by Hamas and Iran</h2>

Hamas claims it planned the attack on its own, without any support from a foreign player.

Mahmoud Mirdawi, a senior Hamas official, said, “This is a Palestinian and Hamas decision.”

Iran also made clear that it stood by Hamas’ actions but didn’t direct them.

“The decisions made by the Palestinian resistance are fiercely autonomous and unwaveringly aligned with the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people,” a spokesman for the Iranian mission at the UN said. “We are not involved in Palestine’s response, as it is taken solely by Palestine itself,” he added.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Iran on Tuesday (Oct 24) that Washington does not seek a conflict with Tehran, but would act swiftly and decisively if Iran or its proxies attack American personnel anywhere.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Iran on Tuesday (Oct 24) that Washington does not seek a conflict with Tehran, but would act swiftly and decisively if Iran or its proxies attack American personnel anywhere. Addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Blinken said, "The United States does not seek conflict with Iran. We do not want this war to widen. But if Iran or its proxies attack U.S. personnel anywhere, make no mistake: we will defend our people, we will defend our security - swiftly and decisively." His comments came amid international fears that the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas could become a larger conflict, drawing in the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah which is supported by Iran. 'Don't throw fuel on fire' Iran has so far not responded to Blinken's remarks and is due to address the Security Council meeting on the Middle East later in the day. "We call on all member states to send a firm, united message to any state or non-state actor that is considering opening another front in this conflict against Israel or who may target Israel's partners, including the United States: don't. Don't throw fuel on the fire," Blinken said. Also read: Israel-Hamas war | Pentagon sends military advisers to aid Israel He also urged that Palestinian civilians must be protected. "We continue to coordinate closely with Egypt, Israel and partners across the region, as well as with the United Nations, to build mechanisms that will enable sustained humanitarian assistance to flow to civilians in Gaza without benefiting Hamas or any other terrorist group," Blinken added. US military steps up surveillance in Middle East The US has been taking new steps to protect its troops in the Middle East as concerns mount about attacks by Iran-backed groups, the news agency Reuters reported on Tuesday citing officials. Some of these measures include increasing American military patrols, restricting access to base facilities and hiking intelligence collection, including through drone and other surveillance operations, the officials told the news agency. They added that the military was also beefing up monitoring from guard towers on military facilities, hiking security at base access points and increasing operations to counter potential incoming drones, rockets, and missiles. 'US does not seek war with Iran, but...': Blinken warns Tehran

US accuses Iran of ‘actively facilitating’ attacks on bases in West Asia. Washington says it will not allow threats to its interests to ‘go unchallenged’ after increase in attacks on its forces in the region. But with current attacks, would a US President really be willing to become embroiled in another war, especially in an election year?
