The new iPhones have courted quite a lot of controversy since their anticipated launch. From shaking cameras to demand issues, the latest line-up of iPhones has made news for all the wrong reasons.

The iPhone 14 pro is priced starting Rs 1,29,900.

Apple claims a few incremental upgrades justify the hefty price tag despite the new iPhone 14 Pro looking identical to its predecessor. Let's break them down for you.

DYNAMIC DISPLAY: FIXES THE UGLY NOTCH

It’s 2022 and Apple has finally said goodbye to that ugly notch or rather given it a facelift by turning it into what it calls “Dynamic Island”. It’s a black contextual box which serves as an interactive display, delivers live alerts, monitors the length of your phone calls, informs you about the battery left in your AirPods and a lot more. Apple loyalists will love this feature since it integrates seamlessly into the phone’s UI and gives the notch serves some purpose after all!

However, let me be frank, it still looks strange under the sunlight.

ALWAYS-ON DISPLAY: A BATTERY GUZZLER

This is where Apple is trying to keep up with Android phones and at last, gives us an always-on display. So, if you lock your iPhone 14 Pro, it dims in brightness and keeps your screen visible at all times. Some would find it useful, I found it to be a battery guzzler.

iPHONES: BRIGHTEST PHONES IN THE WORLD

This is undeniably the most practical and useful feature in the new iPhone. The Super Retina XDR display is rated for up to 1,600 nits of brightness with HDR content and 2,000 nits outdoors in bright sunlight! In case you use an iPhone 13 Pro, the new iPhone is twice as bright.

CAMERA: A CONTENT CREATOR’S ASSET

Apple has always positioned its cameras as the showstopper feature in all its previous iterations. The iPhone 14 Pro also gets major upgrades in its camera system and evidently targets the new generation of content creators. The “Photonic Engine” offers improvement in low-light photography making the new camera system ideal for low-light shots.

The action mode is fantastic for high-adrenalin shots or even to record your kids’ many antics — making it a big hit among new-age parenting blogs too.

Apart from that, the Telephoto camera and 48MP camera are gimmicks at best.

BATTERY LIFE: BETTER, NOT BEST

Once again, users get an incremental upgrade in the battery life of the iPhone 14 Pro when compared to its predecessor. The new A16 Bionic chipset makes the user experience smooth and reliable and leaves no room for complaints especially for habitual Apple users.

iPHONE 14 PRO: SHOULD YOU BUY IT?

If you hold the iPhone 13 Pro and the new 14 Pro next to each other, you will struggle to tell them apart. The design, feel and experience of the two iPhones is near-identical and it’s difficult to find reasons to upgrade.

In a market saturated with budget phones trying to offer the best, the iPhones find themselves struggling to woo buyers. In the age of foldable phones and flip phones, a “Dynamic Island” doesn’t impress most.

But then again, Apple loyalists stick to what they know best and would want to upgrade. In that case, upgrade only and only if your iPhone is older than the 12 Pro.

A senior Russian minister said on Thursday (September 8) that Russian will gets a chance to buy the new Apple iPhone 14 in spite of the US company's departure from the country.

Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov was asked whether iPhone 14 will be available in Russia.

"Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes. There will be the opportunity," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Apple has halted new product sales in Russia in March following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Apple products like iPhone, MacBook have remained available in Russia as sellers sold their remaining stock.

Russian mobile network MTS on Thursday morning was already selling the new iPhone 14 models on pre-order. Prices start from 84,990 roubles ($1,398) for the 128GB version.

MTS said delivery could take up to 120 days and it retained the right to cancel orders if it faced difficulties importing the products.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

Manturov, who is also a deputy prime minister, said last month that the scheme, which covers Western products ranging from luxury clothes to cars, could reach $16 billion in value this year, equivalent to around 4% of Russia's 2021 imports.

Apple company's security experts are warning that everyone should update any Apple device they have immediately. WION tells you why.

WION Fineprint: Apple asks its users to update the devices urgently

Apple has its next big money-making idea. It is not the next generation, glass-ceiling breaker iPhone, MacBook or even an Apple smartwatch. It's advertising. Reportedly, Apple is looking to add more advertisements to its first-party apps that come pre-installed on iPhone.

Apple has its next big money-making idea. It is not the next generation, glass-ceiling breaker iPhone, MacBook or even an Apple smartwatch. It's advertising. Reportedly, Apple is looking to add more advertisements to its first-party apps that come pre-installed on iPhone. According to tech reports, Apple has already internally tested the ads on its Maps, Books and Podcasts. Currently, Apple allows app developers to advertise their apps on the App Store. Moreover, ads are displayed in Apple News and Stocks. It is pertinent to note that last year, Apple rolled out its new privacy policy called 'App Tracking Transparency' that required the apps on its platform to ask for users' permission to track their activity and share it with third parties. Read More: Apple sets deadline for employees to be in the office at least three days a week Succinctly put, Apple disrupted the entire 'personalised advertising' market as business houses had to reconsider their strategies. However, Apple remained unscathed and on the contrary, its advertising business grew 238 per cent to $3.7 billion in 2021. Thus it appears a tad ironic that by adding more ads in the iPhone apps, Apple wants to take this number into the double digits. It's not all that. Apple is also looking to maximise the earning potential of its streaming platform Apple TV Plus. Reportedly, taking a cue out of Dinsey+ and Netflix's book, Apple is willing to experiment with a lower-priced ad-supported subscription plan. Both Disney+ and Netflix are expected to roll out the said tiers by the end of the year. Analysts believe that Apple is in the early stages of developing its own new mobile advertising platform. The uptick in recruitment drive suggests that efforts were ongoing to create a profitable ad platform. Apple and its bumper quarter As reported by WION, last month Apple announced that its June quarter revenue stood at a record $83 billion, up two per cent YoY. Apple also announced that it expected to pay a dividend of $0.3 per share to its shareholders. “This quarter’s record results speak of Apple’s constant efforts to innovate, to advance new possibilities, and to enrich the lives of our customers." Tim Cook was quoted as saying. Read More: Apple and Amazon post impressive numbers amid an economic slowdown (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

According to Nikkei, the company wants to avoid disruption from strict Chinese customs inspections resulting from the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan last week.

The Cupertino-based tech behemoth has asked the suppliers to treat the matter with urgency to avoid possible disruptions caused by goods and components being held for scrutiny, the report said.

The announcement comes at a time when Apple is all set to launch iPhone 14 and other new products in September.

Any item, document or carton bearing "Made in Taiwan" phrase can lead to shipments getting delayed or rejected by the Chinese customs authorities, and, in a worst-case scenario, a fine of 4,000 yuan ($592) may also be levied, Nikkei reported quoting sources.

Beijing considers Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be reunited with the Chinese mainland. But Taiwan, which has a population of around 23 million, is a self-ruled island that sees itself as distinct from the mainland.

The US tech giant has been betting big on Indian and Brazilian sites and trying to be less reliant on Chinese factories.

However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo notes that the iPhone 14 production capacity in India won’t be enough to fill the gap caused by production challenges in China in the short term, but added that it’s still an “important milestone for Apple” when it comes to expanding iPhone production to other places, reports The Guardian.

Apple asks Taiwanese suppliers to label products as ‘made in China’: Report

Apple reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Thursday that beat Wall Street expectations for sales and profit but showed slowing growth for the iPhone maker. Apple stock rose over 3% in extended trading.

iPhone sales rise by 3% in 3rd quarter despite glum economy

iPhone users have been yearning for more customised options for years, but have been unsatisfied until Apple released iOS 15 last year, which included widgets and the ability to alter icons. Apple lovers desired more, wishing for a more interactive home screen, and this year, Apple acted as a gene.

At its 2022 WWDC address, Apple unveiled its major annual operating system updates. Following the popularity of iOS 15 in 2021, iOS 16 was expected to provide a slew of new features, and it didn't disappoint.

What’s new?

A list of new features released by Apple includes:

Lock Screen:

The lock screen is the first major change. Users may now add whatever function they want to see immediately on their screen, such as weather, fitness, clocks, and so on. This makes it extremely simple for consumers to access essential apps. Apple has added the feature to switch between lock screens, which was previously only available on its Apple Watch. We can also change colours and fonts!

Wallpapers:

People used to depend on third-party wallpapers since Apple's wallpapers were so dull, but Apple decided to change that this time. We now have a wide variety of new wallpapers, so much so that our favourite emoticons can now be wallpapered as well. To match the home screen and home screen backgrounds, we now have the option to adjust the background colour or simply blur it.

Notifications:

The notification panel has a new style that notifies users by springing notification bars from the bottom. With this one, Apple went for a really clean, yet sophisticated design. On iOS 16, we have new live notifications, so if you want Safari to keep you updated on match results all the time, you can do so without having to check the app frequently.

Messages:

In iOS 16, you may now edit messages, undo, send messages (Apple refers to this as "Undo Send"), and flag conversations as unread. A few minutes were allotted for dictation. It's now significantly improved and entirely on-device (no data connection is required). With the keyboard, you can seamlessly move from dictating to typing. Emoji identification is automated, auto-punctuation is included, and Siri is fully supported.

There are many more new features introduced by Apple, but these were by far the most highlighted. A Beta (testser) version for testers has been released and will soon be available for the public. The software will be released for public use in September in the USA and India.

Apple has finally heard us!

Apple, the giant iPhone maker plans to slow hiring and spending next year in some divisions citing potential economic downturn as the reason.

Apple plans to slow down hiring: Reports

Apple unveiled its much-anticipated iOS16 at this year’s WWDC, offering a glimpse of what is to be expected from the new update. As expected, the announcement did not disappoint the iPhone users as iOS16 had some important and cool new features. In the new updates, iPhones will have an all-new LockScreen, iCloud Shared Photo Library, updates to Messages and Mail and more. iOS 16 will most likely be released in September alongside the upcoming iPhone 14 and will be available for the iPhone 8 and above. However, developers can download the software now.

Here are all the important new features coming to iPhones later this year.

Messages

It is unknown whether this new feature would sway people away from WhatsApp, but it can certainly pose problems for the Meta-owned messaging app.

"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," said Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.

iPhone users can now edit and undo messages in iOS16. So, if you notice a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to edit it. A tiny "edited" appears in the status under the message.

The next new feature is that you can immediately recall a sent message. This feature works by long pressing the text which will then be prompted by many options. Among them, you have to press ‘Undo Send’ to prevent it from being read.

Lastly, you can now mark messages and threads as unread. It will help you to respond to a message sometime later.

New customisable lock screen

Taking a leaf out of the Android, iPhone users can now customise the lock screen in their iPhones, by adding more widgets. This much-needed feature makes it easy to get information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more. You can also change the colour of the background photo and also the font on the lock screen.

Lock Screen comes with new gallery

The new Lock Screen gallery will feature a range of options, from a weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions, an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system and more. Users can also create Lock Screens using their favourite emoji or colour combinations. With multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between their favourites with just a swipe.

Notifications and live activities

One of the problems that users faced were the clunky notifications that would pop up on the home screen.

iOS 15 introduced “summaries”, which went a long way towards helping the situation, but they pale in comparison to Android.

In iO16, Apple seems to have addressed the issue in a major way. Under the new software update, notifications have been moved to the bottom of your display. Once you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.

There’s also a cool new feature called Live Activities which makes it easier to follow sporting events, workouts or even the progress of an Uber ride.

Wallet and Apple Pay Later

ID cards from more states will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So rather than showing your exact birth date, the Wallet app will display your ID and that you're over 21.

iOS 16 makes sharing keys easier with apps like Mail and Messages.

Apple Maps gets multi-stop routing

Apple Maps is introducing multi-stop routing, so users can plan up to 15 stops in advance and automatically sync routes from Mac to iPhone when they’re ready to go. Maps is also bringing transit updates to users, making it easy for riders to view how much their journey will cost, add transit cards to Wallet, see low balances, and replenish transit cards, all without leaving Maps.

Siri gets the ability to run shortcuts

Siri adds the ability to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded without requiring upfront setup. Users can add emoji when sending a message, choose to send messages automatically — skipping the confirmation step — and hang up the phone and FaceTime calls completely hands-free by simply saying “Hey Siri, hang up.”

Apple sees bigger supply problems after strong start to the year

Apple is facing the wrath of the public after it released the iOS15.4 update for iPhone that brought forth 37 new emoticons, including some gender-neutral ones.

Many were not pleased with the ‘pregnant man', and 'pregnant person’ emoticons as they appeared to be body-shaming men.

As China's harsh Covid lockdown continues to disrupt normal life in Shanghai, another Apple manufacturer has decided to shut shop as the city struggles to contain new infections.

One of Apple’s top iPhone suppliers Pegatron on Tuesday said that it is halting its operations in its two facilities until further orders.

“The date of factory resumption is to be advised by the local government," the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with officials to resume operations "as soon as possible."

This might come as a major blow to Apple as the Taiwanese company is responsible for making “roughly” 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones.

Notably, Quanta, which helps make MacBooks, and iPad maker Compal Electronics, have also halted production at their sites in Shanghai, according to Nikkei Asia,

This decision comes a month after Foxconn, another iPhone manufacturer, halted operations in the Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen in the wake of China’s “zero-Covid policy”.

With several Apple suppliers suspending their operations, the tech firm is likely to face supply crunch. So far, it is not immediately clear which types of manufacturing would be affected following Pegatron’s move.

“The date of factory resumption is to be advised by the local government," the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with officials to resume operations "as soon as possible." This might come as a major blow to Apple as the Taiwanese company is responsible for making “roughly” 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones. Tech giant Apple has introduced a new feature that will transform iPhones into payment terminals.

Bypassing hardware systems such as Block Inc's Square terminals, it will allow businesses to accept credit card and digital payments with just a tap on their iPhones.

"The new capability will empower millions of merchants across the US, from small businesses to large retailers, to use their iPhone" to accept payments, Apple said in a statement.

Contactless, or tap-to-pay, payment systems have long been popular outside the US as the default way of paying for goods and services. But tap-to-pay has grown in popularity in the US in recent years, particularly during the pandemic when customers and merchants wanted to avoid as much physical interaction with cash and cards as possible.

The tap-to-pay feature will use the iPhone’s existing NFC chip that was being used to transmit payments down to a payment terminal. It will be available to developers via an iOS software update this spring. It will be up to developers and payment-services companies to add the capability to their point-of-sale software.

Stressing on the services privacy feature, the iPhone-maker said it would not know what was being purchased or who was buying it, stressing on the services privacy feature.

It will also give Apple a competitive edge in the growing world of contactless payments, in which the iPhone, as well as Apple Pay, play a dominant role by effectively turning the iPhone into a point-of-sale terminal.

The feature will only be available on iPhones XS or later, Apple said, and will not be available on iPads.

Payments platform Stripe will in the spring be the first to offer the "tap to pay" system to their business customers, Apple noted, with others expected to follow later this year.

"Whether you're a salesperson at an internet-first retailer or an individual entrepreneur, you can soon accept contactless payments on a device that's already in your pocket: your iPhone," said Billy Alvarado, Stripe's chief business officer.

"Apple views payments as an important standalone business for the company and they are looking to leverage it," said Shannon Cross, analyst at Cross Research.

"Them venturing into contactless payments is an indication on how important payments are as a business for the company."

The iPhone has been used as a contactless way to pay for goods and services since Apple Pay launched in 2014. But it required merchants to have their own point-of-sale hardware in order to accept contactless payments.

Apple is not the first to turn its flagship smartphone into a payment terminal without requiring additional equipment: South Korea's Samsung launched a similar offer in October 2019.
