A senior Russian minister said on Thursday (September 8) that Russian will gets a chance to buy the new Apple iPhone 14 in spite of the US company's departure from the country.

Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov was asked whether iPhone 14 will be available in Russia.

"Why not? If consumers want to buy these phones, yes. There will be the opportunity," he said, as quoted by Reuters.

Apple has halted new product sales in Russia in March following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Apple products like iPhone, MacBook have remained available in Russia as sellers sold their remaining stock.

Russian mobile network MTS on Thursday morning was already selling the new iPhone 14 models on pre-order. Prices start from 84,990 roubles ($1,398) for the 128GB version.

MTS said delivery could take up to 120 days and it retained the right to cancel orders if it faced difficulties importing the products.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request to comment.

Manturov, who is also a deputy prime minister, said last month that the scheme, which covers Western products ranging from luxury clothes to cars, could reach $16 billion in value this year, equivalent to around 4% of Russia's 2021 imports.

Apple has reportedly asked suppliers in Taiwan to strictly enforce a long-standing rule that Taiwanese-made parts and components are labelled made either in "Taiwan, China" or "Chinese Taipei.

According to Nikkei, the company wants to avoid disruption from strict Chinese customs inspections resulting from the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan last week.

The Cupertino-based tech behemoth has asked the suppliers to treat the matter with urgency to avoid possible disruptions caused by goods and components being held for scrutiny, the report said.

The announcement comes at a time when Apple is all set to launch iPhone 14 and other new products in September.

Any item, document or carton bearing "Made in Taiwan" phrase can lead to shipments getting delayed or rejected by the Chinese customs authorities, and, in a worst-case scenario, a fine of 4,000 yuan ($592) may also be levied, Nikkei reported quoting sources.

Beijing considers Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be reunited with the Chinese mainland. But Taiwan, which has a population of around 23 million, is a self-ruled island that sees itself as distinct from the mainland.

Apple reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Thursday that beat Wall Street expectations for sales and profit but showed slowing growth for the iPhone maker. Apple stock rose over 3% in extended trading.

iPhone users have been yearning for more customised options for years, but have been unsatisfied until Apple released iOS 15 last year, which included widgets and the ability to alter icons. Apple lovers desired more, wishing for a more interactive home screen, and this year, Apple acted as a gene.

At its 2022 WWDC address, Apple unveiled its major annual operating system updates. Following the popularity of iOS 15 in 2021, iOS 16 was expected to provide a slew of new features, and it didn't disappoint.

What’s new?

A list of new features released by Apple includes:

Lock Screen:

The lock screen is the first major change. Users may now add whatever function they want to see immediately on their screen, such as weather, fitness, clocks, and so on. This makes it extremely simple for consumers to access essential apps. Apple has added the feature to switch between lock screens, which was previously only available on its Apple Watch. We can also change colours and fonts!

Wallpapers:

People used to depend on third-party wallpapers since Apple's wallpapers were so dull, but Apple decided to change that this time. We now have a wide variety of new wallpapers, so much so that our favourite emoticons can now be wallpapered as well. To match the home screen and home screen backgrounds, we now have the option to adjust the background colour or simply blur it.

Notifications:

The notification panel has a new style that notifies users by springing notification bars from the bottom. With this one, Apple went for a really clean, yet sophisticated design. On iOS 16, we have new live notifications, so if you want Safari to keep you updated on match results all the time, you can do so without having to check the app frequently.

Messages:

In iOS 16, you may now edit messages, undo, send messages (Apple refers to this as "Undo Send"), and flag conversations as unread. A few minutes were allotted for dictation. It's now significantly improved and entirely on-device (no data connection is required). With the keyboard, you can seamlessly move from dictating to typing. Emoji identification is automated, auto-punctuation is included, and Siri is fully supported.

There are many more new features introduced by Apple, but these were by far the most highlighted. A Beta (testser) version for testers has been released and will soon be available for the public. The software will be released for public use in September in the USA and India.

Apple lovers desired more, wishing for a more interactive home screen, and this year, Apple acted as a gene. At its 2022 WWDC address, Apple unveiled its major annual operating system updates. Following the popularity of iOS 15 in 2021, iOS 16 was expected to provide a slew of new features, and it didn't disappoint. What’s new? A list of new features released by Apple includes: Lock Screen: The lock screen is the first major change. Users may now add whatever function they want to see immediately on their screen, such as weather, fitness, clocks, and so on. This makes it extremely simple for consumers to access essential apps. Apple has added the feature to switch between lock screens, which was previously only available on its Apple Watch. We can also change colours and fonts! Wallpapers: People used to depend on third-party wallpapers since Apple's wallpapers were so dull, but Apple decided to change that this time. We now have a wide variety of new wallpapers, so much so that our favourite emoticons can now be wallpapered as well. To match the home screen and home screen backgrounds, we now have the option to adjust the background colour or simply blur it. Notifications: The notification panel has a new style that notifies users by springing notification bars from the bottom. With this one, Apple went for a really clean, yet sophisticated design. On iOS 16, we have new live notifications, so if you want Safari to keep you updated on match results all the time, you can do so without having to check the app frequently. Messages: In iOS 16, you may now edit messages, undo, send messages (Apple refers to this as "Undo Send"), and flag conversations as unread. A few minutes were allotted for dictation. It's now significantly improved and entirely on-device (no data connection is required). With the keyboard, you can seamlessly move from dictating to typing. Emoji identification is automated, auto-punctuation is included, and Siri is fully supported. There are many more new features introduced by Apple, but these were by far the most highlighted. A Beta (testser) version for testers has been released and will soon be available for the public. The software will be released for public use in September in the USA and India. As expected, the announcement did not disappoint the iPhone users as iOS16 had some important and cool new features. In the new updates, iPhones will have an all-new LockScreen, iCloud Shared Photo Library, updates to Messages and Mail and more. iOS 16 will most likely be released in September alongside the upcoming iPhone 14 and&nbsp;will be available for the iPhone 8 and above. However, developers can download the software now.

Here are all the important new features coming to iPhones later this year.

Messages

It is unknown whether this new feature would sway people away from WhatsApp, but it can certainly pose problems for the Meta-owned messaging app.

"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," said Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi as he introduced three of the most requested features for the Messages app.

iPhone users can now edit and undo messages in iOS16. So, if you notice a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to edit it. A tiny "edited" appears in the status under the message.

The next new feature is that you can immediately recall a sent message. This feature works by long pressing the text which will then be prompted by many options. Among them, you have to press ‘Undo Send’ to prevent it from being read.

Lastly, you can now mark messages and threads as unread. It will help you to respond to a message sometime later.

New customisable lock screen

Taking a leaf out of the Android, iPhone users can now customise the lock screen in their iPhones, by adding more widgets. This much-needed feature makes it easy to get information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, activity ring progress, and more. You can also change the colour of the background photo and also the font on the lock screen.

Lock Screen comes with new&nbsp;gallery

The new Lock Screen gallery will feature a range of options, from a weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions, an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, Moon, and solar system and more. Users can also create Lock Screens using their favourite emoji or colour combinations. With multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between their favourites with just a swipe.

Notifications and live activities

One of the problems that users faced were the clunky notifications that would pop up on the home screen.

iOS 15 introduced “summaries”, which went a long way towards helping the situation, but they pale in comparison to Android.

In iO16, Apple seems to have addressed the issue in a major way. Under the new software update, notifications have been moved to the bottom of your display. Once you receive them, instead of being compiled into a list, they appear like a vertical carousel. This not only looks better but should be a big help for one-handed use of your iPhone.

There’s also a cool new feature called Live Activities which makes it easier to follow sporting events, workouts or even the progress of an Uber ride.

Wallet and Apple Pay Later

ID cards from more states will be available in your Wallet app along with more security and privacy features. In iOS 16 you can also protect your identity and age. So rather than showing your exact birth date, the Wallet app will display your ID and that you're over 21.

Apple Maps gets multi-stop routing

Apple Maps is introducing multi-stop routing, so users can plan up to 15 stops in advance and automatically sync routes from Mac to iPhone when they’re ready to go. Maps is also bringing transit updates to users, making it easy for riders to view how much their journey will cost, add transit cards to Wallet, see low balances, and replenish transit cards, all without leaving Maps.

Siri gets the ability to run shortcuts

Siri adds the ability to run shortcuts as soon as an app is downloaded without requiring upfront setup. Users can add emoji when sending a message, choose to send messages automatically — skipping the confirmation step — and hang up the phone and FaceTime calls completely hands-free by simply saying “Hey Siri, hang up.”

Users can also logout from iCloud accounts on other devices for added safety from the Safety Check page.

The new iOS will have feature fresh updates for CarPlay including new gauge clusters and automakers including Ford Motor Co and Jaguar Land Rover will integrate the feature with their cars.

Apple revealed the M2 chip, the successor to the company's first in-house chip, named M1.

The latest M2 chip, which comes with 24 gigabytes of unified memory, is 18% better than its predecessor and can playback multiple streams of 4K and 8K video.

The M2 chip will be loaded on a brand new MacBook Air, redesigned around the M2 chip. Weighing just 2.7 pounds, new Air is 11.3 inches thick, fitted with a 13.6 inch liquid Retina display and will have a Magsafe charging system.

The MacBook Air will start at $1,199 and come in gray, gold, silver and blue.

As China's harsh Covid lockdown continues to disrupt normal life in Shanghai, another Apple manufacturer has decided to shut shop as the city struggles to contain new infections.

One of Apple’s top iPhone suppliers Pegatron on Tuesday said that it is halting its operations in its two facilities until further orders.

“The date of factory resumption is to be advised by the local government," the company said in a statement, adding that it would work with officials to resume operations "as soon as possible."

This might come as a major blow to Apple as the Taiwanese company is responsible for making “roughly” 20 to 30 per cent of all iPhones.

Notably, Quanta, which helps make MacBooks, and iPad maker Compal Electronics, have also halted production at their sites in Shanghai, according to Nikkei Asia,

This decision comes a month after Foxconn, another iPhone manufacturer, halted operations in the Chinese tech hub of Shenzhen in the wake of China’s “zero-Covid policy”.

Foxconn has "resumed fundamental operations" in Shenzhen as of late March, the company said.

With several Apple suppliers suspending their operations, the tech firm is likely to face supply crunch. So far, it is not immediately clear which types of manufacturing would be affected following Pegatron’s move.

Shanghai, the city of 26 million and home to major international companies, has become the epicentre of China’s latest COVID-19 surge.

Tech giant Apple has introduced a new feature that will transform iPhones into payment terminals.

Bypassing hardware systems such as Block Inc's Square terminals, it will allow businesses to accept credit card and digital payments with just a tap on their iPhones.

"The new capability will empower millions of merchants across the US, from small businesses to large retailers, to use their iPhone" to accept payments, Apple said in a statement.

Contactless, or tap-to-pay, payment systems have long been popular outside the US as the default way of paying for goods and services. But tap-to-pay has grown in popularity in the US in recent years, particularly during the pandemic when customers and merchants wanted to avoid as much physical interaction with cash and cards as possible.&nbsp;

The tap-to-pay feature will use the iPhone’s existing NFC chip that was being used to transmit payments down to a payment terminal. It will be available to developers via an iOS software update this spring. It will be up to developers and payment-services companies to add the capability to their point-of-sale software.

Stressing on the services privacy feature, the iPhone-maker said it would not know what was being purchased or who was buying it, stressing on the services privacy feature.

It will also give Apple a competitive edge in the growing world of contactless payments, in which the iPhone, as well as Apple Pay, play a dominant role by effectively turning the iPhone into a point-of-sale terminal.

The feature will only be available on iPhones XS or later, Apple said, and will not be available on iPads.&nbsp;

Payments platform Stripe will in the spring be the first to offer the "tap to pay" system to their business customers, Apple noted, with others expected to follow later this year.

"Whether you're a salesperson at an internet-first retailer or an individual entrepreneur, you can soon accept contactless payments on a device that's already in your pocket: your iPhone," said Billy Alvarado, Stripe's chief business officer.

"Apple views payments as an important standalone business for the company and they are looking to leverage it," said Shannon Cross, analyst at Cross Research.

"Them venturing into contactless payments is an indication on how important payments are as a business for the company."

The iPhone has been used as a contactless way to pay for goods and services since Apple Pay launched in 2014. But it required merchants to have their own point-of-sale hardware in order to accept contactless payments.

Apple is not the first to turn its flagship smartphone into a payment terminal without requiring additional equipment: South Korea's Samsung launched a similar offer in October 2019.
