As Covid lockdowns and increasing geopolitical tension have strained the crucial supply chains of Apple in China and the company is now focusing on securing the supply chain, India is emerging as a potential alternative to the second largest economy of the world.

Last month, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal had said that the company is planning to increase its production in the country to a quarter of its total manufacture.

Goyal said that Apple is already manufacturing 5 per cent to 7 per cent of its products in India. “If I am not mistaken, they are targeting to go up to 25 per cent&nbsp;of their manufacturing,” he stated while speaking at an event.

The comments were made by the minister at a time when Apple's top supplier, Foxconn (HNHPF), is planning the expansion of its operations in India after it suffered severe disruption in supply from China.

Apple has depended on its vast manufacturing network in China for years to produce iPhones, iPads and other products on a mass scale.

However, its dependence on China was tested last year after the zero-Covid policy in Beijing dramatically hit the supplies.

Since last year, Apple has increased its efforts to push its investments in India. Market research firm Counterpoint's research director Tarun Pathak said, “Theoretically, it can be done, but it won’t be happening overnight.”

“(Apple’s) dependency on China is a result of almost two and a half decades of what China put in to develop their entire electronics manufacturing ecosystem,” said Pathak, adding that currently, the company is manufacturing 95 per cent of its phones in China.

Foxconn employees will receive CNY500 after referring a new recruit if the referred person works in the company for 15 days. They will be given another CNY500 if the recruit continues to work for the company for a month, as per a message forwarded on messaging app WeChat.

Foxconn apologised last month for facing a "technical glitch" in making payments after protests broke out in the factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou over overdue pay and Covid restrictions.

The announcement was made after viral videos showed workers, in huge numbers, fighting with security staff. In October, a video surfaced showing workers jumping the fence after they were forced to stay in lockdown inside the facility due to the Covid outbreak.

Investment firm Wedbush Securities' Dan Ives said, "What started out a month ago as 3% iPhone 14 Pro shortages grew to 5% last week and now are roughly 10%+ of overall units with the potential to increase over the coming month depending on any production improvements from Foxconn."

The economic growth of China has suffered due to the global economy's slowdown and zero-Covid policy.&nbsp;

The decision was taken on Wednesday by consensus of all stakeholders at an inter-ministerial task force constituted by the&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. The task force held wide-ranging discussions on the possibility of making uniform charging ports for all compatible smart devices and another for low-cost feature phones.

“During the meeting, a broad consensus emerged among stakeholders on the adoption of USB Type-C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops etc. Further, it was deliberated that a different charging port may be adopted for feature phones," consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh was quoted as saying in Indian media.

The meeting was attended by representatives from industry associations such as the Confederation of Indian Industry, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and educational institutions including IIT&nbsp;Kanpur, and IIT (BHU),&nbsp;Varanasi.

In the meeting, the stakeholders agreed on a phased roll-out of uniform charging ports for “effective implementation and easy adoption”.

In an antitrust lawsuit,&nbsp;Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have been accused of&nbsp;conspiring to raise the price of the iPhone and iPad by eliminating practically all other resellers of new Apple products off Amazon's website.

An agreement that came to effect in January 2019 stipulated that Apple would give Amazon discounts of up to 10% on its products in exchange for Amazon allowing only seven out of 600 resellers to continue using its platform. This agreement was the subject of the proposed class action in federal court in Seattle, as per Bloomberg reports.&nbsp;

According to the complaint, after only carrying a small selection of Apple devices in addition to imitations, this made Amazon the preeminent reseller of new iPhones and iPads on its website.

Prices increased by&nbsp;more than 10 per cent, while&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;stabilized the&nbsp;prices&nbsp;it charged in retail stores, the complaint said. Discounts of 20 per cent&nbsp;or more that were once common no longer are, it added.

"Erecting barriers to entry to keep competitors out and raising&nbsp;prices&nbsp;in the wake of their elimination is precisely the kind of conduct that Congress enacted antitrust laws to prevent," the complaint said. "The case is open and shut."

The lawsuit filed on Wednesday pertains to Americans who purchased brand-new iPhones and iPads from Amazon starting in January 2019.

A woman's iPhone 14 alerted the authorities of a crash as she enjoyed a ride. The phone's new car-crash detection was triggered as she "enjoyed getting hoisted 109 feet in the air and whipped around at over 50 mph".

The phone placed a 911 call to the Warren County Communications Center with an automated voice message which said “The owner of this iPhone was in a severe car crash and is not responding to their phone.”

It also picked up the background audio from the amusement park; hoots, cheers, music and adrenaline-fueled people having fun.

As per the 911 report, an emergency response team was sent to the location but they couldn't locate any emergency. The iPhone user realised the whole thing and called the emergency services back to tell them that she is okay. Ironically she reassured them that she hasn't been in a car crash from the line for 'bumper cars'.

While the incident is in a certain way hilarious, it also raises the question of how dependable the feature is. There would be nothing funny about receiving an alert that your loved one has been in a crash, only to discover that they were having fun at a fair or amusement park and just forgot to answer their phone.

This is not to say that the emergency call is placed undetected by the user. The feature uses a combination of sensor data to assess a potential crash. If detected, it shows a message on the screen for ten seconds, following which a ten-second countdown happens, accompanied by an alarm.&nbsp;

Only after this countdown, emergency services are contacted. A message is also sent to your emergency contact.

However, as the incident demonstrates you sometimes forget to check your phone.

In spite of that, there have already been multiple cases where the feature was literally a lifesaver, in one it alerted authorities to a deadly accident where a car crashed into a tree. The crash had no witnesses and without the alert, the user might have perished.

Even if scary or irritating this feature has saved lives and will continue to do so, one can only hope that Apple will soon launch an update fixing this "bug".

Apple to double iPhone exports from India by next year

After anticipating dwindling demands for new iPhone14 models, Apple has reportedly asked the suppliers to cut back on production this year.

The California-based tech behemoth is planning to reduce production by as many as six million units,&nbsp;Bloomberg reported quoting people familiar with the matter.

Now, the tech firm is looking to produce&nbsp;90 million handsets for the period, which would be roughly the same level as the last year and in line with Apple’s original forecast this summer.

&nbsp;The firm had previously told its suppliers to prepare for a 7 per cent increase in orders.

Moreover, the demand has been more for the iPhone 14 pro models than the entry-level ones, which has forced one of the suppliers to focus the production capacity exclusively on the premium versions, it has reported.

On Wednesday, Apple’s shares went down about four&nbsp;per cent following reports of cuts in production plans this year.

On Monday, the US tech giant announced that it began making its new iPhone 14 in India sooner than anticipated, as it moves some of its production away from China.

Apple had worked with Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group, its most important production partner, with the original goal of assembling iPhones in Chennai about two months after its global launch, Bloomberg had reported.

Apple's move to diversify the supply chains has been in response to rising tensions between US and China over Taiwan and trade.

Earlier this month, JP Morgan analysts said that they expect Apple to move around 5&nbsp;per cent of iPhone production to India this year.

The report also predicted that 25 per cent of all iPhone production will be in the South Asian nation by 2025.
