Italian football league Serie A champions Inter Milan could see a change in ownership over non-repayment of debt around $434 million. The debt is owed by Inter's Chinese owner Suning group to US Investment fund Oaktree and the US firm can take control of the club after the debt repayment deadline passes on Tuesday (May 21).

The Chinese group had taken a loan of about $300 million at an interest rate of 12 per cent to pay the staff and players during the Covid pandemic. The club was kept as collateral for the loan by the Suning group.

As the US lender waits for the repayment of debt, news agency AFP, citing a source said that a 'not event a single euro' has been paid to Oaktree yet.

Steven Zhang, Inter's president, on Saturday (May 18) accused the US Investment firm of 'jeopardising' &nbsp;the club's financial stability with unspecified legal actions. It also said that Oaktree is obstructing negotiations of full repayment. Zhang's reportedly has been in negotiations with another US fund Pimco to repay Oaktree.

Club's CEO Giuseppe Marotta, however, said that the situation was 'stable'. Marotta made the comments after Inter's last league game on Sunday (May 20) in San Siro.

Inter won the the league title for the second time in four years. The club has won seven trophies along with two European finals ever since Suning group took over in 2016.

They, however, were hit hard by the pandemic and had reported a loss of about $93 million in 2022/23 season before facing a loss of $151 million and $266 million in two seasons prior to that. The losses were majorly due to closure of stadiums and most of the football clubs faced the heat of financial crunch during the Covid times.

Inter's local rivals AC Milan were also taken over by another US fund, Elliot Management, in 2018 after failure of repayment of loan by Chinese businessman Li Yonghong.

Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick and Lionel Messi had an incredible five assists and a goal in the second half as a rampant Inter Miami crushed the New York Red Bulls 6-2 in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

Two-goal substitute Matias Rojas sparked the second half rout from Eastern Conference leaders Inter after New York had led 1-0 at the break.

Without Messi, Miami had fallen to a 4-0 defeat to the Red Bulls in New York in March, but they more than avenged that loss with a merciless second-half demolition job.

Messi's five assists, which all came in the second half, are a new record for an MLS game and he now has 10 goals and 12 assists in eight league appearances so far this season.

"The Kansas City game was a key for us, because we had just been eliminated by Monterrey and the team showed their character. Now we have three wins in a row and it is getting more solid every time," he said.

Martino said the rest of his players had now got used to playing in front of the large crowds that Messi is drawing.

"We've handled it well. That was a learning curve last season and now we are dealing with it well," he added.

New England coach Caleb Porter said he was disappointed that his defenders had allowed Messi the space for his goals but said the Argentine had shown his class in making them pay.

"Honestly, I expected the season to be exactly the opposite of what happened," said Martino, who took over just before Messi's arrival. "My expectations were to put the group together, shape it football-wise, not transcend too much in the Leagues Cup, compete well in the Cup (US Open Cup) and qualify for the playoffs, but it was exactly the opposite as it usually happens when a coach thinks something," he said.

"Out of three possible tournaments we have won one, it is a very important fact for us because the league has 28 other teams. Houston and we won, whoever wins the league will be the third winner and there will be 25 others who will not have won. From that point of view, we're happy," he said.

Miami's final two games are both against Charlotte with the last on the road on October 21. It remains to be see if Messi, who has been called up for Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifiers, will feature.

No Hollywood ending for Lionel Messi in his maiden MLS season as Inter Miami crash out of playoffs race

After a lengthy absence from the game, Lionel Messi turned up in Inter Miami colours on Saturday (October 7) as his side took on FC Cincinnati, in a quest to retain playoff hopes. Although Inter Miami lost the game 1-0, a fan had a memorable moment, albeit in a controversial manner.&nbsp;

Messi was substituted onto the field after half-time and on a rare occasion, could not guide his team to the victory shores. After the match, a youngster evading security managed to saunter across the pitch to Messi.&nbsp;However, before the kid could reach the Argentine, Messi's personal bodyguard, Yassine Chueko, made famous by the internet, halted him in the tracks.&nbsp;

Chueko, a former Navy Seal and MMA competitor, reportedly handpicked by Inter Miami owner David Beckham, grabbed the kid and started to escort him out of the pitch. However, after a few seconds, upon talking to the kid, he turned around and&nbsp;took the intruder to Messi&nbsp;and stood by while the young man had his few seconds of glory, alongside the World Cup winner.&nbsp;

"We needed that win obviously and every game now is a final. We suffered of course, we saw the quality of Inter Miami but we knew also they had some problems in counter-attack. It was a perfect night for us," added the 31-year-old.

Charlotte kept their post-season hopes alive with a 3-0 win over the East's bottom club Toronto with two first-half penalties from Polish forward Karol Swiderski.

Although the North Carolina side are in 13th place, they are just two points behind Montreal, who occupy ninth place, the last playoff spot in the East.

Major League Soccer: Inter Miami's playoff hopes fade after Chicago rout sans Messi

The Houston Dynamo defeated Inter Miami 2-1 to win the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday with an injured Lionel Messi watching from the stands at DRV PNK Stadium.

Without Messi and his former Barcelona team-mate Jordi Alba, Miami struggled to compete with an enterprising Houston and could have little to complain about the outcome.

Miami co-owner David Beckham, who watched the game with his former Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane, had hoped for another night of celebration for his club after their Leagues Cup triumph last month.

But Miami lacked intensity and ideas as they were given the runaround by Ben Olsen's impressive Houston team.

No clear explanation has been given for Messi's injury with references to "muscle fatigue" followed by talk from coach Gerardo Martino of "scars" from an old injury.

The World Cup-winner was withdrawn in the first half of the MLS win over Toronto last week and sat out Sunday's draw at Orlando City.

With no Messi to worry about, Houston were on top from the outset, moving the ball around with confidence and purpose while Miami with Sergio Busquets the only one of their trio of ex-Barca players on the field, struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Drake Callender was forced into a double save when Nelson Quinones drove towards the far post, the Miami keeper pushing the ball out and then doing well to get his legs to the follow up from Corey Bair.

But Houston grabbed the lead in the 24th minute with a perfect counter-attack ending with Brazilian Artur feeding the overlapping Griffin Dorsey who blasted in at the near post.

Houston were utterly dominant, passing the ball with a swiftness that left Miami chasing shadows and it wasn't long before they had doubled their advantage.

Colombian winger Quinones cut into the box from the left flank and Miami right-back DeAndre Yedlin's desperate lunge brought him crashing to the ground. French forward Amine Bassi made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-0.

Football: Houston Dynamo down Messi-less Inter Miami in US Open Cup

Inter Miami shrugged off an injury concern over Lionel Messi to beat Toronto FC 4-0 on Wednesday with Robert Taylor scoring twice as they boosted their playoff hopes.

Messi returned to the starting line-up after skipping Saturday's 5-2 defeat at Atlanta due to muscle fatigue but he had to leave the field in the 38th minute, looking uncomfortable.

His former Barcelona team-mate, Spaniard Jordi Alba who had also sat out the trip to Atlanta, had limped off three minutes earlier in the game.

"They had to come out, we will evaluate them in the coming days," Miami coach Gerardo Martino told broadcasters Apple TV at the interval.

Despite the blow of losing their star and one of their most influential players, Miami swept aside the Eastern Conference's bottom club with some ease.

Facundo Farias opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a blistering volley after Toronto keeper Tomas Romero had meekly palmed out a Noah Allen cross.

Substitute Robert Taylor then made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with an outstanding individual strike, dribbling across the box from the left before unleashing a sharply angled drive back into the bottom corner.

Taylor then turned provider, releasing another substitute Benjamin Cremaschi who fired through the legs of Romero to make it 3-0.

Finnish international Taylor completed his impactful performance with the fourth, bringing down a floated pass over the top from Farias and blasting home from close range.

The performance of Taylor, Cremaschi and other substitutes will give Miami confidence that they can maintain a push towards the post-season, even if Messi and Alba may need more time to get back to fitness.

"It shows guys are willing to step up, shows the depth we have on our team, and the collective mentality we approach each game with," said goalkeeper Drake Callender.

Miami, who travel to Orlando on Sunday, move up to 13th in the Eastern Conference and are now just five points off Wayne Rooney's D.C. United who occupy ninth spot, the final playoff position. Miami have two games in hand.

D.C United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Atlanta while other results were also favourable for Miami.

Charlotte, who Miami have to play twice, are now just two points ahead of the Florida side after they let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw at home to Philadelphia, conceding a stoppage time penalty which was converted by Daniel Gazdag.

The Columbus Crew beat the Chicago Fire 3-0 with Colombian Cucho Hernandez scoring all three inside 23 minutes -- the second fastest hattrick from the start in MLS history.

Tenth placed New York City kept their playoff hopes alive with a 2-0 win at home to second placed Orlando City.

Eastern Conference leaders Cincinnati needed a goal deep in stoppage time from Argentina Luciano Acosta to earn a point at eighth placed Montreal.

Finnish international Taylor completed his impactful performance with the fourth, bringing down a floated pass over the top from Farias and blasting home from close range. The performance of Taylor, Cremaschi and other substitutes will give Miami confidence that they can maintain a push towards the post-season, even if Messi and Alba may need more time to get back to fitness. "It shows guys are willing to step up, shows the depth we have on our team, and the collective mentality we approach each game with," said goalkeeper Drake Callender.
