<p>The EU has given a December 22 deadline to the company to submit its answer. Failure to do so will result in a formal investigation under the new EU online content rules.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, under the&nbsp;EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), big tech companies are required to do more to police illegal and harmful content on their platform.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Commission is requesting Meta to provide additional information on the measures it has taken to comply with its obligations to assess risks and take effective mitigation measures linked to the protection of minors, including regarding the circulation of SG-CSAM on Instagram,"&nbsp;the European Commission said in a statement on its latest query.</p>

<p>"Information is also requested about Instagram’s recommender system and amplification of potentially harmful content."</p>

<p>It was in October that the bloc first sent a request for information regarding the measures taken to counter the spread of terrorist and violent content. A month later, a second request was directed, seeking information regarding measures to protect minors.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

Media reports published on Monday (Nov 27) say that the lawsuit alleged that Meta knowingly allowed underage users to hold accounts to gather personal data and sell it to advertisers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The federal lawsuit against Meta was filed by the attorney&nbsp;generals in 33 states in October, but the details were not revealed in the report. The lawsuit was filed by states ranging from California to Wisconsin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now the complaint has unveiled further details as it alleged that Meta harmed young users on Facebook and Instagram with highly manipulative algorithms and technological tools. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Citing internal company documents, media reports mentioned that the large number of underage users was an "open secret" at the company.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When the complaint was filed in October, 33 states in a joint statement claimed that Meta's business practices violated the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and other state consumer protection laws. Similar actions were also taken by eight other states in state courts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency explains what exactly is an 'airglow' -&nbsp;Atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere get energised due to sunlight, and as they shed their excess energy, it leads to an airglow.</p>

<p>Meta’s decision to close down the accounts drew angry responses from followers on social media X, who called&nbsp;the move an example of anti-Palestinian censorship.</p>

<p>Initially, Meta said on Wednesday that it had disabled the accounts because of security concerns.</p>

<p>“These accounts were initially locked for security reasons after signs of compromise, and we’re working to make contact with the account owners to ensure they have access,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement.</p>

<p>“We did not disable these accounts because of any content they were sharing,” he said.</p>

<p>The social media watchdog group 7amleh, the Arab Center for Social Media Advancement, which has been monitoring cases related to the silencing of Palestinian voices, has documented more than 238 censorship cases in recent weeks, reports the Guardian.</p>

<p>Dozens of US states, on Tuesday (Oct 24) filed a lawsuit against Instagram’s parent company Meta alleging that the social media platform contributes to the youth mental health crisis, is profiting “from children’s pain,” and misleading people about the safety of its platforms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit comes after a nationwide bipartisan investigation found that Meta has been “harming” children and teens due to the addictive nature of their social media platforms.</p>

<p>The latest lawsuit is among a string of legal actions against social media companies on behalf of children and teens.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the lawsuit</strong></h2>

<p>There are a total of more than 40 US states which are suing Meta but 33 of them have filed their complaint in a federal lawsuit as opposed to others which have sought to fight their case in local courts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In seeking to maximize its financial gains, Meta has repeatedly misled the public about the substantial dangers of its Social Media Platforms,” said the joint lawsuit filed by more than 30 states, including California and Illinois in the city of Oakland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit argues that Meta has exploited young users by creating a business model designed to make them spend as much time as possible on the platform despite harm to their health.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also accused Meta of knowingly inducing addictive and compulsive social media use despite knowing that teenage brains are susceptible to the need for approval in the form of “likes” from other users about their content.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Meta did not disclose that its algorithms were designed to capitalize on young users’ dopamine responses and create an addictive cycle of engagement,” said the complaint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The lawsuit also alleges Meta has violated a law banning the collection of data about children under the age of 13.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Kids and teenagers are suffering from record levels of poor mental health and social media companies like Meta are to blame,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James in a statement announcing the suit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suit has sought a variety of remedies, including substantial civil penalties. According to James, it also urges the federal court to order Meta to stop manipulative tactics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meta has since responded to the lawsuit and said that it was “disappointed”&nbsp;that the attorneys general have chosen to single them out instead of seeking industry-wide solutions.&nbsp;</p>

"Research has shown that young people’s use of Meta's social media platforms is associated with depression, anxiety, insomnia, interference with education and daily life, and many other negative outcomes," said the complaint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our bipartisan investigation has arrived at a solemn conclusion: Meta has been harming our children and teens, cultivating addiction to boost corporate profits,” said California attorney general Rob Bonta, in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “With today's lawsuit, we are drawing the line.” The investigation came after Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked more than 20,000 pages of internal documents sparking criticism of the social media giant putting profit before the security of its users.</p>

<p>In a chilling incident, a 37-year-old man in Lucknow, a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, strangled his wife of 15 years to death in front of their two children inside his SUV.&nbsp; The motive appears to be his deep-seated inferiority complex, stemming from his wife's substantial Instagram following, according to police, as quoted saying by <em>Times of India</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police are waiting to examine the Instagram account of the victim which remains locked and private currently. Reports state that the victim had blocked her husband on the platform&nbsp;which added to his delusion and insecurity.</p>

<p>The accused believed that some of her wife's social media followers would visit their home in his absence. During the interrogation, the man told the police that he suspected his wife's fidelity and hence killed her.</p>

The police are waiting to examine the Instagram account of the victim which remains locked and private currently. Reports state that the victim had blocked her husband on the platform which added to his delusion and insecurity. The accused believed that some of her wife's social media followers would visit their home in his absence. During the interrogation, the man told the police that he suspected his wife's fidelity and hence killed her. However, instead of taking the usual route, the man diverted the car to Purvanchal Expressway. Around 5 am, the husband halted the car near Mujesh intersection in Sultanpur and started a heated argument with the wife. As the fight escalated between the duo, the man, in a fit of rage, fatally strangled his wife while the kids helplessly looked. After the murder, the traumatised kids burst into tears while the accused locked himself inside the SUV. <p>In a shocking incident, a man in Bosnia shot dead his ex-wife and streamed the killing live on his Instagram account. While on the run, he killed two other people before killing himself on Friday to avoid being apprehended, the Associated Press reported citing police.</p>

<p>Police in the city of Tuzla, while sharing details of the attack, in a statement said that the incident occurred in the northeastern Bosnian town of Gradacac, where the assailant injured three people before he “committed suicide after being located and before being apprehended."</p>

<p>As per the prosecutors, after killing the woman, the man ran onto the streets of Gradacac with a gun where he shot dead a man along with his son. The other three people that he injured included a police officer, another woman and a man at various locations in the town.</p>

<p>“I have no words to describe what happened today in Gradacac,” said Nermin Niksic, the prime minister of the Bosnian Federation. “The murderer took his own life in the end, but no one can bring back the lives of the victims.”</p>

<h2><strong>Attacker had past&nbsp;police record </strong></h2>

<p>The motive behind the attack is not yet clear. However, as per officials and Bosnian media, the ex-wife of the assailant, in the past, had reported threats and violence from her husband. The attacker, who was identified as Gradacac resident Nermin Sulejmanovic by the local media, previously had a police record.</p>

<p>As per media reports, the video showed the man firing a bullet at his wife as a child's cries are heard from somewhere close by. It was later taken down from the social media platform.</p>

<p>As the police chased him, he live-streamed two more videos, claiming to have shot at least two other people while on the run.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the officials, approximately 12,000 people watched the killing live and the video received 126 likes.</p>

<p>“This is a huge shame for our society,” the AP quoted Bosnian Human Rights Minister Sevid Hurtic as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per Bosnian media reports, 35-year-old Sulejmanovic was a bodybuilder and fitness coach, who was in the past arrested on charges of drug smuggling and attacking a police officer.</p>

<p>As I reminisce over my college days, one particular memory stands out.</p>

<p>A dear friend of mine, who now graces the screen as a morning-time anchor at a top TV channel, decided to tackle the captivating yet perilous subject of social media's harmful effects and our ever-present attachment to mobile phones.</p>

<p>Her enthusiasm was contagious as she prepared to deliver her presentation.</p>

<p>I vividly remember the moment she engaged the class with a straightforward question that cut through the air like a sharp blade: "Raise your hand if you think you are NOT addicted to social media."</p>

<p>Only one hand emerged from the crowd – mine.</p>

<p>A sense of pride and confidence washed over me, and a beaming smile adorned my face. In that moment, I firmly believed I had built an impregnable fortress of immunity against the allure of Instagram and X.</p>

<p>Little did I know that the siren calls of these virtual realms can seep through the tiniest of cracks.</p>

<p>The answer is complex and multifaceted, urging us to introspect and navigate this interconnected terrain with a discerning eye and a grounded sense of self.</p>

<p>As I log into Instagram, I can't help but notice how this social media app is nothing but a quest for flawlessness, cultivating an obsession with aesthetics.</p>

<p>People are competing to present a picture-perfect version of their lives. The pictures are first carefully selected and then enhanced with artistic filters.</p>

<p>Soon enough and unconsciously, the same Instagram users carry around with them a weight of societal beauty standards.</p>

<p>And then comes the creeping monster which bites the most gullible ones first. It fuels their struggles with self-esteem and body image.</p>

<p>The heavy burden of comparison with influencers and celebrities only ends up in feelings of inadequacy and envy.</p>

<p>Genuine connections fade away with a relentless pursuit of validation through likes and comments. It leaves us all with just one thing in the end - the empty craving for online popularity.</p>

<h2><strong>X, a big mic to morons</strong></h2>

<p>Twitter, now rebranded as X, has become a platform that amplifies the voices of individuals, often regardless of the substance of their messages.</p>

<p>It amplifies the uninhibited and often mindless expression.</p>

<p>The platform's character limit encourages users to condense complex thoughts into short sentences. It sacrifices nuance and promotes superficial thinking.</p>

<p>As a result, X has fostered an environment where divisive opinions and misinformation spread like wildfire. It hijacks meaningful discourse and stifles constructive conversations.</p>

<p>The more I research on this, the more I confirm, said my friend I mentioned earlier, as we wrap up our conversation.</p>

<p>As social media continues to wield a powerful influence over society, it is imperative for us to reflect on the direction these platforms are taking us.</p>

<p>Instagram's cult of perfection and X's glorification of mindless expression contribute to the erosion of critical thinking.</p>

<p>Though, not everything is lost.</p>

<p>Undoubtedly, at times, the platform serves as a tool to air the right message and give voice to the voiceless.</p>

<p>For instance, my journalist friend a couple of days back used X to expose her neighbours who thrashed her parents over a parking dispute in the Indian capital Delhi.</p>

<p>However, more often than not, social media leads to unintended consequences. It lacks empathy and genuine human connection.</p>

<h2><strong>So where are we heading?</strong></h2>

<p>As individuals, we need to redefine our relationship with social media.</p>

<p>Embracing imperfection and authenticity on Instagram can counteract the relentless pursuit of an unattainable ideal.</p>

<p>Moreover, engaging in thoughtful discussions and supporting meaningful content on X can help foster an environment that promotes learning and empathy rather than senseless banter.</p>

<p>Ultimately, the power of these social media platforms lies within us, the users.</p>

<p>Popular social media platform, Meta-owned Instagram, suffered a massive outage Tuesday (July 25) globally, a record third time in a month. Reports said more than 50,000 users faced problems while accessing several features on Instagram.</p>

<p>Several users took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustration and wrote that they were unable to upload images on the social media platform.</p>

<p>The outage was not limited to a particular server or region. Meta is yet to disclose what caused the outage.</p>
