Around 1,300 people in a military academy in Indonesia have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, according to an official as the country continues to struggle against the pandemic.

The Indonesian Army Officer Candidate School is situated in the country's most populated province of West Java. According to the Indonesian army's chief of staff, General Andika Perkasa, the academy has been quarantined and 30 people were initially hospitalised.

Of the 1,280 confirmed infections, 991 were cadets and the rest were staff and their family members, he said. Most of these showed no symptoms.

Until Saturday, 17 of them are still in the hospital.

The outbreak began when two cadets were admitted in the medical facility after fever and back pain. They were later tested positive for coronavirus, which led to mass testing of 2,000 staff and cadets in the academy.

The reason for the two Cadets being infected is unknown.

West Java's governor apologised for the outbreak and urged the citizens to restrict their movements in the neighbourhood where the academy is located.

Indonesia is the hardest-hit country in Southeast Asia with more than 74,000 known cases of COVID-19 and over 3,500 deaths.

The real toll is widely believed to be much higher, however, with experts saying limited testing was understating the true scale of the crisis.

The World Health Organization recently urged Indonesia to do more testing.

A boat carrying 94 suspected Rohingya refugees was seen floating several miles off the coast of Indonesia's Aceh province on Wednesday after being rescued by fishermen.

Police said the boat, found by fishermen on Sunday, was carrying around 94 foreign nationals, including 79 women and children. It is believed the foreign nationals were ethnic Rohingyas, but investigations were ongoing.

The authorities were planning to bring the boat ashore.

The arrival comes as survivors from another boat crammed with more than 300 Rohingya Muslims told Malaysian authorities that dozens onboard had died and their bodies were thrown in the sea during a four-month voyage.

The boat had landed on the Malaysian island of Langkawi on June 8, with 269 people abroad.

Mainly Muslim Malaysia is home to the second largest number of Rohingya refugees after Bangladesh. They fled their homes in Myanmar following a military crackdown in 2017.

Rohingya have made perilous voyages to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia for years. More than one million live in sprawling camps in the south of Bangladesh, with as many as a dozen people sharing one shelter and scarce access to soap and water in some areas.

Indonesia's anti-trust agency has found seven airlines guilty of hurting consumers by lifting airfares at the same time last year, but the carriers were not found to be acting as a cartel, the agency said in a statement late on Tuesday.

Rising air ticket prices in 2019 triggered inflationary pressures in Southeast Asia's largest economy and impacted the hospitality business across the archipelago.

Leylah Fernandez may have come up short in the U.S. Open final on Saturday, but the Canadian teen won over the New York crowd after the match when she paid homage to the city`s resilience on the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The 19-year-old Fernandez, speaking on court moments after her improbable run came to an end, appeared to be done with her post-match interview until she asked for the microphone back so she could address the crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.

"I know on this day it was especially hard for New York and everyone around the United States," said Fernandez, who fell 6-4 6-3 to British teenager Emma Raducanu.

"I just want to say that I hope I can be as strong and as resilient as New York has been the past 20 years."

Fernandez, who was not even born when the attacks on the World Trade Center towers took place, said she had learned about 9/11 from watching movies and asking her parents what happened.

She said when she woke up on Saturday, she looked at the date and remembered.

"Obviously I don`t know much about what really happened," said Fernandez. "But with the few information that I do have, I know that New York has suffered a lot the past years when it did happen.

"I just wanted to let them know that they`re so strong,

they`re so resilient.

"They`re just incredible.

"Just having them here happy, lively, just going back to the

way they were, having my back during these tough moments, has made me stronger."

The touching speech from an emotional Fernandez drew loud applause from the crowd and plenty of praise across social media, including from former world No. 1 Andy Roddick.

"Leylah asking for the mic back to acknowledge 9/11 was one of the classiest, most empathetic, and mature things I’ve ever seen in a post game moment ... and she’s only 19. I’m blown away," Roddick wrote on Twitter.

Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president now running to be mayor of New York City, said he was also blown away by the young Canadian`s grace.

"For someone who was not even born on 9/11, from another country, to have the grace to honor our great city in such a moment is inspiring," tweeted Adams. "New York honors you tonight @leylahfernandez."

Indonesia has cancelled the haj pilgrimage this year for people in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation due to concerns over the coronavirus, the religious affairs minister said on Tuesday.

Each year hundreds of thousands of Indonesians go on the haj to Saudi Arabia, where Islam's two holiest sites -- Mecca and Medina -- are located. For many Indonesians, the religious pilgrimage is a once-in-a-lifetime event, with the average wait time 20 years due to a quota system, according to the country's cabinet secretariat.

Saudi authorities have already said the haj and umrah pilgrimages -- which attract millions of travellers from around the world -- will remain suspended until further notice.

Fachrul Razi, Indonesia's religious affairs minister, said the decision to cancel hajj this year was made due to concerns over the coronavirus and ongoing travel restrictions.

The quota for Indonesian pilgrims this year was 221,000, with more than 90 per cent already registered to go, according to the religious affairs ministry website.

Dewi, an employee of a telecommunications company in Jakarta and registered to perform the pilgrimage this year, told Reuters that while she had waited six years, she had made peace with the news.

"If that is the decision, I will accept it," said Dewi, who did not want to give her full name. "After all, I believe that everything happens with God's permission."

Indonesia has rejected Chinese claims in the South China Sea in a letter written by Indonesia's permanent mission to the United Nation to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Division of Ocean Affairs and Law of the sea of the body.

The letter as seen by WION said, "Indonesia reiterates that the nine-dash line map implying historic rights claim lacks international legal basis and is tantamount to upset UNCLOS 1982".

Nine dash line is Chinese claim in the South China sea and nearly encompasses the entire area include the disputed islands of Paracel and Spratly. Earlier this year, China approved the establishment of 2 districts to administer disputed Paracel & Spratly island in the South China Sea, in an attempt to affirm sovereignty over the area.

The Letter by the Indonesian permanent mission reminded that Chinese claims are in contravention to international law and said that "view has been confirmed by Award of 12 July 2016 by the tribunal that any historic rights that the People's republic of China may have had to the living and non-living resources were superseded by the limits of the maritime zones provided for by UNCLOS 1982"

The 2016 cases of Philippines v. China or the South China Sea Arbitration, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague had ruled that in favour of Philippines and said China has no historic right to the area based on the "nine-dash line".

Since Jakarta is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) or Laws of the Seas, which is internationally agreed governance system for the sea, the letter called for "full compliance towards international law" and the country "not being bound by any claims made in contravention to international law including UNCLOS 1982".

While this is not for the first time Indonesia has said so, but the letter sent on 26th May to UN come at a time when China in letters to UN has protested against Malaysia, Philipines and against both Malaysia and Vietnam submissions by the ASEAN countries on the continental shelf.

The Indonesian government has condemned a Chinese fishing company for their "inhuman" behaviour towards their nationals. The company is alleged to treat its Indonesian workers as virtual slaves which led to the death of three of them.

Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi held a video conference from Jakarta where she said that 49 Indonesian fishermen, ranging from 19 to 24 years old, were forced to work an average of over 18 hours a day on at least four Chinese fishing boats. According to the foreign minister, some of them were not paid or did not receive the whole amount.

Crew members of the company were forced to work for extra time, in poor conditions that have caused illness which eventually led to the death of three Indonesian men. The bodies of the deceased were thrown overboard into the Pacific Ocean.

"We condemn the inhuman treatment against our crew members working at the Chinese fishing company," Marsudi said. "Based on the information from the crews, the company has violated human rights."

The condemnation came after a few videos released by South Korean media made rounds on social media where an unnamed Indonesian fisherman told about the unfair treatment by the Chinese company.

The crew members, who were promised $300 per month received less $300 for full year's work. "We will ensure that the company has to fulfil our crews' rights," Marsudi said.

Parts of Indonesia that do not have early warning signals for an earthquake are at a risk from a tsunami caused by an underwater landslide, according to scientists.

According to more than 2.5 million years of data, there are 19 old underwater landslides surrounding the nation.

The submarine landslides occur once in every 1,60,000 years.

If history repeats itself in the modern world, cities of Balikpapan and Samarinda with a population of more than 1.6 million people will be at stake.

The newly proposed capital city of Indonesia on the island of Borneo, Balikpapan will be severely impacted, according to researchers.

Coastal communities in the country without early warning signal could be at risk because of the landslides that have occurred in the past, according to a research team monitored by Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.

“The largest of the landslides comprised 600 kilometres cubed of sediment, while the smallest we identified were five kilometres cubed,” said Researcher Rachel Brackenridge.

The junk created by the largest landslides had the capacity to fill the Sydney Harbour a thousand times.

The team mapped under the seabed using seismic data, according to Brackenridge.

The seabed is layered and huge sediments chunks are seen which might make things chaotic. Seeing the internal layers and characteristics of the sediments it is evident that the sediment has spilled down a slope like an underwater avalanche.

The death toll has crossed the 4000 marks in the last two years only from the Palu Bay and Anak Krakatau tsunamis.

The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami that took 2,30,000 lives in Indonesia, had its epicentre at the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

According to researchers, the landslides were the side-effect of a strong current that acts as conveyor belts carrying sediments from the Mahakam Delta to the continental slope to the south. This makes the seabed steep and week leading to landslides.

Researchers estimate that the largest tsunamigenic event took place every 5,00,000 years.

The problem is that Indonesia has the warning signals in a different place but not in areas that would be worst affected by a tsunami generated from the landslides.

Researchers are now quantifying the risk by making various models od landslide and tsunami generation, which would help them predict the scope and size of the threshold that causes tsunamis and inform mitigation strategies.
