Cyclonic storm ‘Fengal’ brought heavy rains and strong winds on Saturday, disrupting operations at Chennai Airport. A video circulating on social media showed an IndiGo plane struggling to land amid powerful crosswinds and low visibility, sparking concerns about aviation safety. In the undated footage, an Airbus A320 Neo was seen aborting its landing shortly after touching down. The aircraft tilted briefly to the left before stabilising and ascending back into the clouds. WION could not independently verify the authenticity of the video. While some criticised the decision to allow landings under such extreme conditions, others argued that the crosswinds and poor visibility should have prompted an immediate abort of the landing attempt. Passengers on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Varanasi complained of discomfort due to what they believed was an issue with the air conditioning on Thursday (September 07), after which IndiGo issued an apology for the inconvenience, saying that its cabin crew quickly helped those affected.

However, according to a report by news agency ANI, the airline denied that there was a problem with the air conditioning on the flight. Instead, sources from IndiGo explained that a sudden temperature change led to the cabin heating up, which caused some passengers to panic.

A video from the flight, 6E 225, showed passengers fanning themselves with magazines to cool down. Several passengers reportedly fainted because of the heat and lack of air.

"We extend our apologies for the inconvenience experienced on flight 6E 2235 operating from Delhi to Varanasi on September 5, 2024," read a press statement from the airlines.

The airline explained that the discomfort stemmed from changes in the cabin temperature, which were made based on passenger requests. The crew provided assistance to those affected by the situation.

"The discomfort was attributed to fluctuations in cabin temperature, which were adjusted in response to passenger requests. Our cabin crew promptly extended assistance to the affected passenger to address the situation," added the statement.

In June, a similar incident occurred on a Delhi to Bagdogra flight when the air conditioning failed for an hour. Many passengers, especially the elderly, struggled with breathing issues due to the heat, with some likening the experience to being ‘hijacked’ because of the lack of communication.

In response to that incident, IndiGo released a statement saying, "IndiGo flight 6E 2521 between Delhi and Bagdogra was delayed due to high ground temperatures impeding operations. IndiGo prioritises passenger safety above all else and is taking steps to enable a prompt departure. Passengers are being provided with regular updates, and we regret the inconvenience caused due to factors beyond the airline's control."

IndiGo flight makes emergency landing in Kolkata after engine failure mid-air

Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder and promoter of IndiGo, has taken a significant step toward his planned exit from InterGlobe Aviation by offloading a 6 per cent stake in the company. The shares were sold in a block deal on August 29, 2024, at a floor price of Rs 4,760 per share, valuing the transaction at Rs 11,000 crore, as detailed in a report by Moneycontrol.

This move aligns with Gangwal's strategy to gradually reduce his holdings in India's largest airline, as announced after he resigned from the board in February 2022. IndiGo shares marginally fell after the stake sale, trading at Rs 4,824 on NSE at 9.24 am, down about 0.78 per cent from the previous close. The sale saw approximately 2.3 crore shares change hands, indicating Gangwal's intention to near a complete exit from the airline.

This block deal also triggers a 150-day lock-in period, meaning Gangwal will not be able to sell more shares until the end of this period, as reported by CNBC-TV18 on August 28. IndiGo's stock responded to the news with a slight decline, trading at Rs 4,838 on the NSE by 9:22 AM, down 0.45 per cent from the previous close. The share price has been buoyant this year despite the aviation industry's challenges, and the current sale was executed at a slight discount.

Brief history of Gangwal family's stake in Indigo

As of June 2024, the Gangwal family, through various entities, held a 19.38 per cent stake in InterGlobe Aviation. Rakesh Gangwal himself owned 5.89 per cent of the company, while the Chinkerpoo Family Trust, which includes Shobha Gangwal and JP Morgan Trust Company of Delaware as trustees, controlled another 13.49 per cent. The family's stake in the airline has been steadily declining from 36.7 per cent in 2019 to its current level.

This is not the first major stake sale by the Gangwal family. The first tranche was sold in September 2022, reducing their holding by 2.8 per cent for Rs 2,000 crore. This was followed by another sale of 4 per cent in February 2023 for Rs 2,900 crore, and in August 2023, Shobha Gangwal sold nearly 3 per cent for Rs 2,801.8 crore.

The latest sale is a continuation of Gangwal's long-term plan to divest from the airline, which he helped build into a dominant force in India's aviation sector. The market will now closely watch how this exit impacts IndiGo's share price and its future direction as one of the country's leading low-cost carriers.

An IndiGo flight at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Tuesday (May 21) was delayed by at least an hour after the Indian airline overbooked a passenger.

The 6E 6543 flight, operating from Mumbai to Varanasi, was taxiing when the crew onboard spotted a passenger standing at the rear end.

The plane was then immediately brought to the aerobridge and the passenger was taken off board.

Another passenger, who was on the flight, was quoted as saying, "It was then that the crew alerted the pilot and the flight had to return to the terminal."

Another passenger said, "The flight returned to the bay and the passenger was offloaded. The airline then checked the cabin baggage of all passengers on board before proceeding with the take-off after a delay of at least an hour."

It's not unusual for airlines to overbook flights to avoid flying with empty seats and incur losses.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 reported the flight finally took off at 8:41am, after a delay of one hour.

What happened?

According to an airline source, an error had occurred during the boarding process.

“There was an error during the passenger boarding process of 6E 6543 from Mumbai to Varanasi, wherein a standby passenger was allotted a seat reserved for a confirmed passenger. The error was noticed prior to the departure of the aircraft, and the standby passenger was de-boarded. This led to a slight delay in the departure of the aircraft. IndiGo will take all measures to strengthen its operational processes and regrets the inconvenience caused to customers,” the spokesperson said.
