India: Lok Sabha discusses Ram Temple, BJP MP says ‘Ram is everywhere’

India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took a jibe at Congress MP Sonia Gandhi while responding to the debate on the White Paper in Lok Sabha stating that Gandhi, who is the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), acted like a 'super' Prime Minister and said that 'Ghotala driven' government mismanaged the economy the government.

"The centre point of the 'Ghotala-driven' government and mismanagement of the economy lies in the issue of leadership. Sonia Gandhi ji was the 'super' Prime Minister as the chairperson of the advisory council and an extra-constitutional and unaccountable person," Sitharaman said.

"It was an unaccountable and unanswerable power. Due to this, scams took pace. It was an unconstitutional use of power," she added.

She then referred to the incident when Congress MP Rahul Gandhi tore up the ordinance that was put forward by the Manmohan Singh government in the year 2013 questioning the decency in the matter.

"When Manmohan Singhji, the then-Prime Minister, was on a foreign trip, a man who might have been the Congress' general secretary or president at the time tore an ordinance. Was this decency? Wasn't this an insult to the Constitution?"

"He was an arrogant man who did not care for his own prime minister," she added.

Highlighting the scams under the UPA government's tenure, the Indian finance minister stressed Congress' "glaring mismanagement of defence" sector stating that its highlight was the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland scam.

"Critical shortage of ammunition and defence equipment was the main feature of 2014 when we inherited the economy. Bulletproof jackets were not available for our soldiers. Night vision goggles were not available," Sitharaman said.

She then highlighted that the 'Jayanti Tax' during the reign of UPA, pushed the environment clearances for projects for up to a year stating that the efforts of the Modi government during its 10-year tenure put the economy back on rails.

The average time to clear projects increased to 316 days from 86 days between 2011 and 2014.

"We corrected all misgovernance, and focussed on reforms," Sitharaman said, adding the average environment clearance time for projects has come down to 70 days.

What happened at the 2013 presser?

The UPA government, which was led by Congress had put forward the Ordinance in order to get around a Supreme Court judgement barring the elected representatives from becoming the members of legislative bodies upon being convicted in criminal cases.

However, they were propelled to push back the Ordinance after Rahul Gandhi publicly opposed it by shredding the piece of paper, claiming that it deserved to be dumped in the bin.

At the time of a hearing in the Lily Thomas vs Union of India case, the Supreme Court ruled that "any MP, MLA or MLC who is convicted of a crime and given a minimum of 2 years' jail loses membership of the House with immediate effect".

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana election results 2023: The verdict is out. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form governments in three Hindi-speaking states in western and central India just few months before he will seek a third consecutive term with General Elections in 2024.

The BJP has taken decisive leads in western Indian state of Rajasthan, and central Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. All of these states together constitute 65 of 543 seats in Lok Sabha or Lower House of the Indian Parliament. The BJP currently holds 63 of these 65 seats, and for the Indian National Congress — the principal opposition party run by India's fourth-generation Nehru-Gandhi family — this loss is morale shattering.

"We bow to the Janata Janardan," PM Modi, wrote on X (formerly Twitter), expressing reverence for the electorate's mandate in these states.

Suggesting that the win in three states is a sign of BJP securing a third straight term in New Delhi, Modi said: "Some people are even saying that today's hattrick has guaranteed the hattrick in 2024."

It will be a litmus test for the INDIA alliance—a coalition of 26 regional and national parties that was formed to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The results of Friday’s bypolls would give a sense of which the voters are leaning ahead of the general elections, where Modi will seek to retain his third term. Across six states, seven seats saw tough between the parties on Sept 5. These are: Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura. Security tightened, counting underway Out of the seven seats, three (Dhanpur, Bageshwar and Dhupguri) were held by the BJP and one each by the Samajwadi Party (Ghosi), CPI(M) (Boxanagar), JMM (Dumri) and the Congress (Puthuppally). In the Ghosi constituency, the polling percentage was recorded at 50.77 per cent and in Jharkhand's Dumri a total of 64.84 per cent voter turnout was recorded. The Ghosi seat fell vacant after the resignation of SP MLA and OBC leader Dara Singh Chauhan, who rejoined the BJP. For the Bageshwar assembly bypoll in Uttarakhand, the counting will be done at 14 tables with 130 polling personnel on the job, District Magistrate Anuradha Pal said on Thursday. In Tripura, the counting of votes began at 8 am on Friday for the by-elections to the two assembly seats in Sepahijala district. India by-elections: Counting of votes underway across six states

The political uproar over a non-peer reviewed research paper by a faculty member of India's Ashoka University took a turnaround after the university distanced itself from the paper. The research paper that questioned the integrity of India's election process 'has not yet completed a critical review process and has not been published in an academic journal', said the privately-owned university located outside Delhi in the northern town of Sonipat in Haryana state.

What did the paper say?

The research paper by Sabyasachi Das, an assistant professor of economics at the university, claimed 'targeted electoral discrimination' in India's election process in recent years.

"I compile several new datasets and present evidence that is consistent with electoral manipulation in closely contested constituencies and is less supportive of the precise control hypothesis," the abstract of the 50-page research paper said.

"Manipulation appears to take the form of targeted electoral discrimination against India's largest minority group - Muslims, partly facilitated by weak monitoring by election observers. The results present a worrying development for the future of democracy."

The research paper, titled 'Democratic Backsliding in the World’s Largest Democracy', made overarching claims by citing narrow-margin wins by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party as a pattern of discontinuity.

The BJP, "due to its superior electoral machine, was able to precisely predict and affect win margins," it claimed.

"In view of the depletion of trust in electoral processes across the globe and the exceptional integrity of India’s electoral institution in its past, the paper presents a worrying development with potentially far-reaching consequences for the world’s largest democracy," the paper said.

Political uproar

The research paper triggered a political debate in New Delhi with leaders from India's principal opposition party Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) throwing in their weight.

Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor said the research paper's findings were "hugely troubling". "If the Election Commission and/or the Government of India have answers available to refute these arguments, they should provide them in detail. The evidence presented does not lend itself to political attacks on a serious scholar. E.g. the discrepancy in vote tallies needs to be explained, since it can't be wished away," Tharoor wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

BJP lawmaker Nishikant Dubey termed the research paper "half-baked".

"It is fine to differ with the BJP on matters of policy, but this is taking it too far. How can someone in the name of half-baked research discredit India’s vibrant poll process? How can any university allow it? Answers needed -- this is not good enough a response," Dubey said.

Ashoka University's clarification

After the paper led to a political uproar, Ashoka University came out to distance itself from it.

"Ashoka University is dismayed by the speculation and debate around a recent paper by one of its faculty members and the university's position on its contents," it said in a statement.

"As a matter of record, Ashoka University is focused on excellence in teaching and research across multiple disciplines, with a vision to build India's finest university, create social impact and contribute to nation-building. The University encourages its 160-plus faculty to carry out research, but does not direct or approve specific research projects by individual faculty members. Ashoka values research that is critically peer-reviewed and published in reputed journals," the statement read.
