The secretary of state's comments came after the Quad nations: India, Japan, Australia and the US met on Tuesday in Tokyo where they supported a rules-based Indo-Pacific region, sending an indirect message to China over its expansionist attempts.&nbsp;

"I was with my foreign minister counterparts from India, Australia, and Japan… four big democracies, four powerful economies, four nations, each of whom has real risk associated with the threats attempting to be imposed by the Chinese Communist Party. And they see it in their home countries too," Pompeo said on The Guy Benson Show, as quoted by The Indian Express.&nbsp;

"But they’ve all seen it, whether it’s the Indians, who are actually having a physical confrontation with the Chinese up in the Himalayas in the northeastern part of India, the Chinese have now begun to amass huge forces against India in the north."

He also said the Quad members are working on a set of policies to resist the threats each of these nations face from Beijing.&nbsp;

"(India) absolutely need the United States to be their ally and partner in this fight," he added.

Pompeo said the the "tide has turned" and under Trump's leadership a coalition is established that "will push back against the threat and maintain good order, the rule of law, and the basic civic decency that comes from democracies controlling the world and not authoritarian regimes".

The report further said on the southern banks of the lake, the loudspeakers installed by PLA told Indian forces in Hindi that the move to deploy forces at these heights in winters is futile.&nbsp;

Sources told news agency ANI that the Chinese 'loudspeakers' move is under constant watch by Indian soldiers and the idea behind this could be a possible distraction or "relieve the pressure".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Beijing on Wednesday said it has been "honouring" agreements signed with New Delhi, adding it is committed to "peace and stability" in the border region.&nbsp;

"For the Chinese side, we have been honouring the agreements signed between China and India. We are committed to peace and stability in the border area. Meanwhile, we are committed to our sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.&nbsp;

It also said that the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China border affairs (WMCC) should continue its engagements.&nbsp;

China demands India withdraw troops from border to avoid escalation

India foiled an attempt by Chinese troops to change the status quo on their disputed border -- the Line of Actual Control (LAC) --&nbsp;in a fresh flare-up between the two nuclear-armed nations.

But China refuted India's statement, claiming its troops "never cross the line of actual control".

Army Spokesperson Col Aman Anand on Monday said troops from China's People's Liberation Army(PLA) "violated" the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements on the ongoing standoff in eastern Ladakh, and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo on the night of August 29/30.

"On the Night of 29/30 August 2020, PLA troops violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo," the Indian army said in a statement.

It said Indian soldiers foiled the Chinese bid to "unilaterally change facts on the ground."

For months, troops have been locked in a face-off in the western Himalayas where both sides accuse the other of violating the Line of Actual Control, or the de facto border.

The Indian army said the latest flare-up took place along&nbsp;the high altitude Pangong Tso lake.

"Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the southern bank of Pangong Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on ground," it said.

To this end, the Chinese foreign ministry said the Chinese border troops "never cross the line of actual control", adding both sides are in communication regarding the situation on the ground.

It is the first major incident involving the troops of the two countries after the Galwan Valley clashes on June 15 in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed. China also suffered casualties but it is yet to make the details public but according to an American intelligence report it was 35.

India and China have held several rounds of military and diplomatic talks in the last two-and-half months but no significant headway has been made for a resolution to the border row in eastern Ladakh.

The two sides began a process of disengagement on July 6, a day after a telephonic conversation between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on ways to bring down tensions in eastern Ladakh.

However, the process has not moved forward since mid-July.

The PLA has pulled back from Galwan Valley and certain other friction points but the withdrawal of troops has not moved forward in Pangong Tso, Depsang and a couple of other areas.

At the five rounds of Corps commander-level talks, the Indian side has been insisting on complete disengagement of Chinese troops at the earliest, and immediate restoration of status quo ante in all areas of eastern Ladakh prior to April.

The face-off began on May 5 following violent clashes between the two armies in the Pangong lake area. The incident in Pangong Tso was followed by a similar incident in north Sikkim on May 9.

The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Prior to the clashes, both sides have been asserting that pending the final resolution of the boundary issue, it is necessary to maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas.

Even as both sides were engaged in diplomatic and military talks, the Indian Army stepped up its strength in all key areas along the LAC to deal with any eventualities.

Chief of Army Staff Gen MM Naravane has already conveyed to all the senior commanders of the Army, overseeing the operation of the frontline formations along the LAC, to keep up a significantly high state of alertness and maintain the aggressive posturing to deal with any Chinese "misadventure", sources said.

The tension between the two sides escalated manifold after the Galwan Valley clashes.

Following the incident, the government gave the armed forces "full freedom" to give a "befitting" response to any Chinese misadventure along the LAC.

The Army sent thousands of additional troops to forward locations along the border following the deadly clashes. The IAF has also moved air defence systems as well as a sizeable number of its frontline combat jets and attack helicopters to several key air bases.&nbsp;

India thwarts fresh Chinese attempt to alter status quo in Ladakh. Beijing is still in denial

China, it looks like, is a bit reluctant to completely withdraw from the Finger area and wants to maintain some presence there -- even though it is showing flexibility in the military-level talks with India.

Sources have told news agency ANI that the Chinese have agreed for complete withdrawal from other friction points including the Galwan valley, Hot Springs, and Gogra post area in Eastern Ladakh.

"In the talks, the Chinese showed reluctance for complete withdrawal from Finger area as they want to maintain some elements in areas near Finger 8," a source said.

In the areas near Finger Four, the Chinese troops have started dismantling their infrastructure from Blacktop and Greentop.

However, India has made it clear that it will not accept anything less than both sides going back to their permanent locations which existed in the April-May time frame. The meeting between Corps commander-level officers, including Lt Gen Harinder Singh, lasted for close to 15 hours. It started on July 14 at 11:30 am and ended at 2 am on July 15.

Both sides will now monitor further disengagement by troops and verify the development in the next few days around July 21-22.

In the area in and around the Patrolling Point 17, the Chinese have apprehensions that after its withdrawal India might use the strategic heights under it for gaining a tactical edge there.

The Chinese have built several hardened barracks and shelters which would be dismantled by them during the withdrawal in that area.

In Patrolling Point 14, the Chinese have gone back substantially from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and adjoining area in PP-15.

The NSA, during his interaction with the Chinese side, had made it clear that both sides would have to move back to their permanent locations for the matter to be sorted out completely and to the satisfaction of both sides.

Sources have told news agency ANI that the Chinese have agreed for complete withdrawal from other friction points including the Galwan valley, Hot Springs, and Gogra post area in Eastern Ladakh. "In the talks, the Chinese showed reluctance for complete withdrawal from Finger area as they want to maintain some elements in areas near Finger 8," a source said. In the areas near Finger Four, the Chinese troops have started dismantling their infrastructure from Blacktop and Greentop. However, India has made it clear that it will not accept anything less than both sides going back to their permanent locations which existed in the April-May time frame. The meeting between Corps commander-level officers, including Lt Gen Harinder Singh, lasted for close to 15 hours. It started on July 14 at 11:30 am and ended at 2 am on July 15. Both sides will now monitor further disengagement by troops and verify the development in the next few days around July 21-22. In the area in and around the Patrolling Point 17, the Chinese have apprehensions that after its withdrawal India might use the strategic heights under it for gaining a tactical edge there. The Chinese have built several hardened barracks and shelters which would be dismantled by them during the withdrawal in that area. In Patrolling Point 14, the Chinese have gone back substantially from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and adjoining area in PP-15. The NSA, during his interaction with the Chinese side, had made it clear that both sides would have to move back to their permanent locations for the matter to be sorted out completely and to the satisfaction of both sides.

An Indian ban on dozens of Chinese apps following a border clash between the two nations has possibly derailed a $1 billion India expansion plan of China's ByteDance, while also sparking an uproar from users of its popular TikTok video app.

TikTok was removed from Google and Apple app stores in India after New Delhi said on Monday night it was among the 59 apps which it believed posed a "threat to sovereignty and integrity".

The government order didn't name China, or cite the border clashes. App analytics firm Sensor Tower said all the 59 apps named were of Chinese origin, including Tencent's WeChat and Alibaba's UC Browser.

The biggest casualty of the move appears to be ByteDance, which has since last year hired several senior executives and laid out plans to invest $1 billion in India. India is TikTok's top growth market and accounts for 30% of its 2 billion downloads worldwide.

TikTok said in a statement the Indian government had invited the company to respond to the ban and submit clarifications, adding that it complies with all data security and privacy requirements.

It did not comment on the fate of its expansion plan.

Following the ban order, many TikTok users posted videos expressing their displeasure with the ban.

One user @omkarsharma988 posted a video in which he throws utensils to the ground, hits a chair and weeps, with a Hindi song playing "You've left me, how will I live now?" The video had been liked 218,000 times, as the app still functions on phones on which it is already downloaded.

When TikTok was banned briefly last year after a state court said the app encouraged pornography, the company told the Supreme Court the ban cost it roughly $15 million a month.

Several Indian lawyers said chances of a success through a legal challenge this time were slim given the government had invoked national security concerns, meaning the Chinese companies can only hope to lobby India to reverse the decision.

"From a legal perspective it (the ban) is sound because grounds like national security are difficult to challenge," said Santosh Pai of Link Legal, which advises Chinese companies.

The ban has also left Tencent disappointed, which has apps on the market and is also a major investor in Indian startups, two sources aware of the company's concerns told Reuters. New Delhi in April mandated screening of incoming investments from countries like China, hitting the likes of Tencent.

While its WeChat messaging app is not that popular in India, the company fears the government could impose a ban later on the mobile version of its blockbuster game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, said one of the sources. Tencent declined to comment.

In a nutshell, the gameplan is Make in India! And 12 priority sectors have been identified for this.

Domestic production can immediately reduce India's dependence on China.

India levies anti-dumping duties on 90 Chinese products. So the plan is to slap this on at least 300 more products.

There are at least 40 sectors in the Indian industry that can make these products -- with a much better quality.

The government must help them to step up and stop cheap Chinese imports.&nbsp;

These moves are unprecedented.

This is India's biggest clean-up of imports from one country.

In the past, India did not want to be called protectionist. It wanted to be seen as liberal. So, even with China, India always took a case-by-case approach.&nbsp;

For example, India restricted import of cheap Chinese tyres after Indian makers complained; raised the import duty on Chinese incense sticks; and entirely prohibited the import of milk and milk products.

All of this happened only after industry bodies lobbied hard. But after this border conflict, the government is taking the initiative.

It is shooting emails to industry bodies. The government is also leading by example in boycotting chinese products.

It has asked state-run telecom companies to avoid Chinese products, and now wants to keep Chinese products out of the state-run e-commerce platform.

This is no small platform. India foresees transactions upwards of Rs 55,000 crore

It is also suspected that China may find a way to dump its products in India -- indirectly. So New Delhi is reviewing its trade pacts with other countries, because China is dumping goods in india via common trade partners.

China and India are engaged in the most serious military standoff on their disputed border since 2017, with soldiers in the remote Ladakh region accusing each other of encroachment.

The origin of the conflict dates back to the year 1914, when representatives of China, Tibet and Britain gathered in Shimla.

They wanted to settle the borders between China and British India, but Beijing refused to sign the deal -- because that would have allowed Tibet to be an autonomous region.

Tibet and Britain eventually signed the deal, and the 890 kilometer-long McMahon line was established.

This line became the legal border between India and China.

Then, in 1962, Independant India, led by Jawahar Lal Nehru, and China, led by Mao Zedong, were tussling over the border.

India's move to grant asylum to Dalai Lama had then not gone down too well with China.

The neighbouring country also has its eyes on Aksai Chin, as it is integral for connecting Tibet to Xinjiang.

Consequently, a war broke out between the two countries on October 20, 1962.

Chinese troops crossed the McMahon line and took up positions in the Indian territory.

They captured Rezang La in the west, and Tawang in the east.

The war lasted for about a month, India lost over 1,000 men. As many as 2,000 others were taken prisoners of war.

India also lost 14,500 square miles of territory.

China revealed the number of casualties on its side years later. It claimed it lost around 800 men.

A ceasefire was then signed on November 20, 1962.

This war changed it all for the two nations.&nbsp;

This war scarred the ties between the world's two most populous nations, and changed India's perception of China forever.

New Delhi realised that Beijing cannot be trusted, and the psychological wounds of the war resurfaced repeatedly in the years that followed.

In 1967 in Sikkim, Indian and Chinese troops found themselves -- yet again -- eyeball to eyeball. India was constructing a fence at Nathu La, and the Chinese were unhappy.

A scuffle broke out, and what began with stone pelting resulted in the Chinese troops opening fire.

In September 1967, 88 Indian soldiers were killed in action and the Chinese side lost 300 men.

The next month the two sides engaged in a duel in Cho La, Sikkim.

In 1986, India granted statehood to Arunachal Pradesh -- much to the chagrin of China.

Sumdorong Chu then became a flashpoint, following which the Chinese crossed the LAC. They built permanent structures, including a helipad.

India moved troops to the border. The build-up was eerily similar to 1962, but neither India nor China wanted a war.

So China is forced to back off a year later.

In September 2014, Chinese troops deployed heavy machinery in Demchok. They want to build a road inside the Indian territory.

India retaliated by camping opposite the PLA. The stand-off coincided with President Xi Jinping's three-day india visit.

India raised the issue with Xi, following which the Chinese troops withdrew after a 20-day stand-off.

In 2017, Chinese troops tried to construct a road near the Doklam plateau. But the territory belongs to Bhutan and is close to an Indian highway.

Asserting that China and India are "important neighbours to each other", Chinese foreign ministry on Wednesday said maintaining peace and tranquility along the Sino-India border is in the common interests of both the parties and requires joint efforts.

In separate statements, the Chinese foreign and the defence ministries, however, repeated Beijing's stand that India was responsible for the June 15 violent face-off in eastern Ladakh.

Defence Ministry Spokesman Col Wu Qian said the two defence ministers are negotiating on the phone. "The two sides held a second military-level meeting on June 22 to exchange in-depth views on controlling tensions and maintaining peace and stability in the border areas," he said.

Noting that China and India are important neighbours to each other, Wu said that maintaining peace and tranquility in the border area is in the common interests of both parties and requires the joint efforts of both parties.

"We hope that India and China will meet each other, effectively implement the important consensus between the leaders of the two countries, strictly abide by the agreement reached by the two parties, and continue to properly resolve relevant issues through dialogue and negotiation at all levels. We will make joint efforts to ease the situation in the border areas and maintain peace and stability in the border areas," he added.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the foreign ministers of the two sides during their telephone talk on June 17 agreed to deal with this serious matter in a just way.

"The two sides will stick to the Commander level meeting consensus and cool down the situations soon as possible. The two sides will also maintain peace and tranquility of the border areas, in accordance with the agreement reached so far," he said.

Zhao also said that a second round of Commander level meeting was held on June 22 and 23 during which the "two sides agreed to take measures to de-escalate the situation and jointly promote peace and tranquility."

The talks were held in the midst of escalating tension between the two countries following the violent clashes in Galwan Valley on June 15 that left 20 Indian Army personnel dead, significantly escalating the already volatile situation in the region.

Zhao again accused India of "provoking" a border clash, saying "the onus is not on China's part."

"This risky behaviour by the Indian side greatly violated the agreement between the two countries and the basic norms guiding international relations. It's very serious, with very severe consequences," he said.

Asked why after a positive meeting between the Commanders of the two armed forces, he is repeating the allegations, Zhao said, "what I have just said is meant to clarify the whole situation, tell the truth to everyone. We made this statement because the MEA in India and also Indian media have made some false reports."

The Indian and Chinese armies are engaged in the standoff in Pangong Tso, Galwan Valley, Demchok and Daulat Beg Oldie in eastern Ladakh. A sizable number of Chinese Army personnel even transgressed into the Indian side of the de-facto border in several areas including Pangong Tso.
