Beijing brought in pieces of machinery, cut a trail into a Himalayan mountainside and may have even dammed a river -- in the days leading up to the most violent border clash between India and China in decades -- as suggested by satellite pictures.

The images, shot on Tuesday, a day after soldiers engaged in hand-to-hand combat in the freezing Galwan Valley, show an increase in activity from a week earlier.

Twenty Indian soldiers were killed in an attack by Chinese troops on Monday night at a time when top commanders had agreed to defuse tensions on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), or the disputed and poorly defined border between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

China rejected the allegations and blamed frontline Indian soldiers for provoking the conflict which took place at the freezing height of 14,000 feet (4,300 metres) in the western Himalayas.

The 4,056-km (2,520-mile) border between India and China runs through glaciers, snow deserts and rivers in the west to thickly forested mountains in the east.

The Galwan Valley is an arid, inhospitable area, where some soldiers are deployed on steep ridges. It is considered important because it leads to the Aksai Chin, a disputed plateau claimed by India but controlled by China.

The satellite pictures, taken by Earth-imaging company Planet Labs and obtained by Reuters, show signs of altering the landscape of the valley through widening tracks, moving earth and making river crossings, one expert said.

The images shows machinery along the bald mountains and in the Galwan River.

The clash was the most serious since 1967. Since early May, soldiers have faced off on the border where India says Chinese troops had intruded and set up temporary structures. The confrontation turned into a deadly brawl on Monday.

Satellite images suggest Chinese activity at Himalayan border with India before clash

China's Oppo cancelled the live online launch of its flagship smartphone in India on Wednesday after a border clash between the two countries that has renewed calls from local Indian trader groups to shun Chinese products.

Soldiers from India and China fought each other with nail-studded clubs and stones on a disputed Himalayan mountain frontier this week, leading to the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the worst clash since 1967.

The clashes risk souring sentiment for big Chinese investors who were eyeing the Indian market and already faced pressure as anti-China sentiment festered during the coronavirus outbreak.

Chinese firms such as Great Wall, SAIC and Bytedance have placed major bets on India, where investors like Alibaba also fund many startups. Chinese smartphone brands, including Oppo and Xiaomi, account for eight of every 10 smartphones sold in India.

Oppo, which has a phone-assembly plant in India, had earlier announced a "live unveiling" of its new Find X2 smartphone models would be held on Wednesday, but a YouTube link that had to go live at 4 p.m. local time was not available for viewing.

To launch the phone, the company instead uploaded a 20-minute, pre-recorded video which included a brief highlight of Oppo's efforts to support Indian authorities in preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Oppo did not respond to Reuters' request on why the live launch was cancelled, but a person familiar with the company's thinking said the decision was taken to avoid any possible uproar on social media.

"There is tension in the environment," said the person.

Even before the border clashes, New Delhi in April changed its foreign investment policy for neighbouring countries, a move that upset Chinese investors as the Indian government now screens all incoming investments from there.

"The current government will play hardball... I do not think any new approvals for China proposals will happen in a hurry," said Abhishek Saxena, co-founder of Indian law firm Phoenix Legal that advises Chinese clients.

The Confederation of All India Traders, a group representing roughly 70 million brick-and-mortar retailers, said on Wednesday its members will boycott imported Chinese goods despite the loss their businesses will suffer.

A Twitter user, Uzair Hasan Rizvi, uploaded a video that showed some people throwing a "Chinese TV" from a high-storey building in Gujarat state and then dancing on it before dismantling it. Reuters could not independently confirm when the video was created.

Hindu nationalist group Swadeshi Jagran Manch, which advocates for self reliance, urged Indian authorities to ban Chinese companies from participating in government tenders.

On Wednesday, police arrested some members of the group who protested near the Chinese embassy in New Delhi and chanted slogans such as "Made in China down down".

Donald Trump aware of India-China face-off: White House

The Indian army says at least 20 of its soldiers were killed after hand-to-hand fighting with Chinese troops at a disputed border site on Monday night, the deadliest clash in decades.

China has not given any details of casualties.

But it has excelled in lying.

For six weeks, it lied about de-escalating at the Ladakh border. It lied about not wanting a confrontation.

It lied about respecting the consensus reached during talks.

And now, it is twisting the facts about what transpired at the Galwan Valley.

Here's a list of five lies told by China -- and fully countered by WION.

1) India crossed the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

FACT: There were military level talks on June 6. Both sides reached a consensus.

The PLA violated it.

China built a temporary structure on the Indian side of the border -- somewhere along patrolling point no. 14.

Reports indicate this structure was a tent. And Indian troops destroyed it.

They did not cross the LAC. And they did not violate what was agreed upon.

2) India was provocative. India purposely launched provocative attacks against Chinese personnel and PLA troops only resorted to 'physical self defence measures'.

FACT: China said that after the Indian side destroyed the illegal chinese structure, PLA troops returned in big numbers. They were prepared for a face-off. They crossed the Galwan river into the Indian side of the border. This incursion was followed by a physical skirmish... But so much for self-defence measures?

This cannot be possible.

3) India is actively seeking a face-off, and is building infrastructure to escalate tensions. India's actions violate China's territorial integrity.

FACT: China's reaction shows its nervousness. It has built roads for decades.

Now India is building infrastructure on its side of the border. And China can't take it.

It has been objecting to the construction of roads in the Galwan Valley. It is suspicious that India is making attempts to recapture the Aksai Chin region.

But India is a sovereign country. It can build whatever it wants on its land. And it owes no explanation to China.

4) India violated the June 6 consensus.

China is saying that India 'seriously infringed' upon the consensus made in the military level talks on June 6.

FACT: It was China that never respected this consensus. It did not de-escalate -- it still hasn't.

For weeks, the Chinese state media has been releasing videos that show how Beijing is reinforcing its defences -- videos that look like they are straight out of a war film....

Thousands of troops were 'swiftly relocated' from the Hubei province to the LAC earlier this month.

The PLA even received China's most powerful Howitzers on June 11.

5) China says India is no longer satisfied with mere stand-offs, that India's actions are aimed at capturing Chinese territory, and that India wants to divert domestic pressure due to the rising cases of the coronavirus.

China is also suggesting that India wants to please the United States.

FACT: From the South China Sea to the Ladakh border to the Indian Ocean, it is China that wants to capture territories it doesn't control.

It is China that is not satisfied with its aggressive expansionism.

It is China that wants to divert domestic pressure in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

It is China that wants to divert attention from how it faciliated this pandemic.

It is China that is a subject of global outrage.

And the US wants China investigated over the novel coronavirus aka the Wuhan virus. If any party needs to please anyone right now, it is the Chinese.

To this end, India said it was engaged with China to resolve the issue peacefully.

"We are engaged with the Chinese side to peacefully resolve it," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, replying to a question at an online media briefing.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the two countries did not want "intervention" from a third party to resolve the current military standoff.

"Between China and India we have existing border-related mechanisms and communication channels," Zhao told a media briefing here when asked about Trump's offer.

"We are capable of properly resolving the issues between us through dialogue and consultation. We do not need the intervention of the third party," he said.

The nearly 3,500-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) is the de-facto border between India and China.

Several areas along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides even two weeks after they were engaged in two separate face-offs.

India has said the Chinese military was hindering normal patrolling by its troops along the LAC in Ladakh and Sikkim and strongly refuted Beijing's contention that the escalating tension between the two armies was triggered by trespassing of Indian forces across the Chinese side.

The Ministry of External Affairs said all Indian activities were carried out on its side of the border, asserting that India has always taken a very responsible approach towards border management.
