The whole Toshakhana row over the sale of state gifts received by Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan is getting murkier by each passing day. Now, according to a report by Dawn newspaper, a Dubai-based businessman has claimed that he was sold some of the state gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch gifted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, to Imran Khan . In an interview with TV channel Geo News, Umar Farooq Zahoor claimed that he bought the expensive watch for $2 million. At the time of sale in 2019, the watch was worth Rs 280 million. According to Pakistan’s law, any gift received from dignitaries of a foreign state must be put in the state depository or the Toshakhana. The Norwegian-Pakistani millionaire further claimed to have evidence of buying the watch and three other gifts from Farhat Shahzadi, also known as Farah Gogi, for 7.5 million Dirhams in cash. Shahzadi is allegedly a friend of Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan. Zahoor claimed that he was reached out to by former accountability minister Shahzad Akbar over the purchase of these gifts. After PM Shehbaz Sharif's allegations, Imran says, 'Don’t want an army chief of my choice'

<p>Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has trained his guns on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his elder brother former PM Nawaz Sharif. The PTI boss slammed the PM for stopping in London to meet his brother and discussing the appointment of the next army chief.</p>

<p>"Today, a spectacle is taking place in London. Nowhere does such a scene takes place. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is in London. What is the purpose of the meeting? Talks are being held on the decision to choose the Pakistan army chief," said Khan.</p>

<p>While many thought Khan would have toned down his rhetoric in the backdrop of a failed assassination attempt, the former cricketer has, in fact, dialled it up a certain notches.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The important decisions of the country are taken abroad and by those who have looted Pakistan for the last 30 years," he added.</p>

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has trained his guns on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his elder brother former PM Nawaz Sharif. The PTI boss slammed the PM for stopping in London to meet his brother and discussing the appointment of the next army chief.

"Today, a spectacle is taking place in London. Nowhere does such a scene takes place. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is in London. What is the purpose of the meeting? Talks are being held on the decision to choose the Pakistan army chief," said Khan. While many thought Khan would have toned down his rhetoric in the backdrop of a failed assassination attempt, the former cricketer has, in fact, dialled it up a certain notches. "The important decisions of the country are taken abroad and by those who have looted Pakistan for the last 30 years," he added. Additionally, in an address to the participants of his long march, Khan said he did not want an army chief of his choice but someone who is selected on merit. “I say that the army chief should be appointed on merit. I don’t want an army chief, judge, IG or NAB head of my choice. I want the best people on the basis of merit." As reported by WION, PM Sharif took a detour from the COP27 summit, currently underway in Egypt and landed in London to meet his brother. Nawaz Sharif receives diplomatic passport. Is he returning from exile to Pakistan?

<p>Tens of thousands of supporters of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday gathered at the site in Wazirabad in Punjab province where an assassination attempt was made on the former prime minister last week as the party resumed its stalled long march to Islamabad in presence of its top leaders.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 'Haqeeqi Azadi' (real freedom) march, demanding fresh general elections, was suspended following the attack on 70-year-old Khan on November 3.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan suffered bullet injuries in the right leg when two gunmen fired a volley of bullets at him and others standing on a container-mounted truck in the Wazirabad area, where he was leading the march.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He underwent surgery for bullet injuries at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital owned by his charitable organisation. He is advised to take rest for four to six weeks by doctors.<br />
Addressing his supporters via a video, Khan alleged that the "plan" to assassinate him was made in September.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This incident 'no, this planned assassination attempt', I want to clear that this plan was made in September," he claimed. "On September 24, I said in a public rally that this plan was formed and that they will blame a religious fanatic [for it]."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Khan, who is recovering from injuries, said that the people who wanted him dead had planned to pin his murder on a "religious fanatic".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They planned that if a religious fanatic kills me, the responsibility from them will go away," he claimed.&nbsp;</p>

Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) resumes stalled long march

<p>Judging by history, there is nothing new in the assassination of political leaders, military dictators and despots in Pakistan. Providentially, former Prime Minister Imran Khan who had to make a premature exit as the Prime Minister before the completion of his term narrowly escaped assassination in Gujranwala on November 3, when a lone gunman shot at him injuring his leg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chronologically speaking, October 16, 1951, stands out in the history of Pakistan as a date when the first Prime Minister of the country, Liaquat Ali Khan, was shot dead during a public rally in Rawalpindi, destroying the basis of a fragile democratic institution of a new nation. The bullets fired in 1951, led to the first major assassination but, unfortunately, it was not the last as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former Premier Imran Khan has become the latest to join the long list of politicians, facing such attacks. The shootings and terrorist attacks that have continued at frequent intervals for more than seven decades, took the lives of several politicians, including former Premier Benazir Bhutto, her brother Murtaza Bhutto, Gujarat Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, Punjab’s former Home Minister Shuja Khanzada, ex-minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti and many more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tragically, Benazir was murdered on December 27, 2007, by a suicide bomber after she had just finished an election rally in Rawalpindi. Her brother was shot dead along with six others in a police encounter near his home in Karachi on September 20, 1996. Again, on August 17, 1988, military dictator and then President of Pakistan, Gen Zia ul Haq died in a plane crash after ruling the country with an iron hand for 17 long years. His death is also strongly suspected to be a case of murder stemming out of a larger conspiracy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the suspect, who was arrested by the Punjab Police soon after he shot Imran Khan has confessed that he shot the PTI chief as Imran was "misleading" the nation. The suspect also revealed that he had intended to do so ever since the deposed premier left Lahore and started his long march. He denied if anyone else was behind him.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a related development, party Secretary-General Asad Umar claimed on November 3, that Chairman Imran Khan suspects three people — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a senior military officer Maj Gen Faisal for being behind the assassination attempt. Imran Khan further claimed that he had advance information that these people could be involved in the assassination attempt. Umar disclosed these during a video statement. Quoting the PTI Chairman, Umar demanded that all these three people must be removed and if not, then the party would hold countrywide protests as Pakistan could not be run in this manner anymore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Significantly, for the first time in Pakistan's 75-year history, protests took place against Maj Gen Faisal, all-powerful Peshawar Corps Commander, outside his house for having a hand in Imran Khan's assassination attempt. This is indeed disturbing and the signs are ominous.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the US on November 3, condemned the attack on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and said violence had no place in politics and America was deeply committed to a democratic and peaceful Pakistan. Further, in an official statement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the assassination attempt and wished Imran Khan and all others who were injured, a quick recovery. In another related development, in an apparent bid to do some face-saving, the Pakistan Army has “highly” condemned the firing incident and claimed that the military has offered sincere prayers for the precious life lost and the speedy recovery of Imran Khan. However, it is highly unlikely that the sensation caused by the assassination attempt on Imran Khan, the all-powerful Pakistan military will be able to do the damage control as i) Imran Khan has been the eyesore of the military during his rule and towards the latter years, he fell out with the Army Chief, Gen Bajwa over the appointment of the ISI Chief, ii) In Pakistan’s history, ISI and the military have always been ambitious and have been blatantly interfering into the internal affairs of the political machinery and many a times, it caused a coup-de-etat and usurped power either through bloodless or a bloody coup and iii) as it is, Army and the ISI’s credibility within Pakistan and abroad is very low mainly because it is considered to be highly politicized, corrupt, nefarious and for harbouring homegrown terrorists mainly using them against political adversaries and abetting cross border terrorism in India and Afghanistan. Very recently, the mysterious cold-blooded killing of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif in Kenya for alleged mistaken identity, has raised eyebrows on the Army’s role in exterminating the journalist who was thought to be close to Imran Khan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, in other words, Army and the ISI will find it extremely difficult to extricate itself from their alleged conspiracy in the November 3 Imran assassination attempt case. In the meantime, further interesting revelations are expected to make the case more gripping as Pakistan slips into a certain political tumult and uncertainly as the conspiratorial mystery is unlikely to clear the mist in the near foreseeable future.&nbsp;</p>

Chronologically speaking, October 16, 1951, stands out in the history of Pakistan as a date when the first Prime Minister of the country, Liaquat Ali Khan, was shot dead during a public rally in Rawalpindi, destroying the basis of a fragile democratic institution of a new nation. The bullets fired in 1951, led to the first major assassination but, unfortunately, it was not the last as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former Premier Imran Khan has become the latest to join the long list of politicians, facing such attacks. The shootings and terrorist attacks that have continued at frequent intervals for more than seven decades, took the lives of several politicians, including former Premier Benazir Bhutto, her brother Murtaza Bhutto, Gujarat Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, Punjab’s former Home Minister Shuja Khanzada, ex-minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti and many more. Tragically, Benazir was murdered on December 27, 2007, by a suicide bomber after she had just finished an election rally in Rawalpindi. His death is also strongly suspected to be a case of murder stemming out of a larger conspiracy. Meanwhile, the suspect, who was arrested by the Punjab Police soon after he shot Imran Khan has confessed that he shot the PTI chief as Imran was "misleading" the nation. The suspect also revealed that he had intended to do so ever since the deposed premier left Lahore and started his long march. He denied if anyone else was behind him. In a related development, party Secretary-General Asad Umar claimed on November 3, that Chairman Imran Khan suspects three people — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and a senior military officer Maj Gen Faisal for being behind the assassination attempt. Imran Khan further claimed that he had advance information that these people could be involved in the assassination attempt. Umar disclosed these during a video statement. Quoting the PTI Chairman, Umar demanded that all these three people must be removed and if not, then the party would hold countrywide protests as Pakistan could not be run in this manner anymore. Significantly, for the first time in Pakistan's 75-year history, protests took place against Maj Gen Faisal, all-powerful Peshawar Corps Commander, outside his house for having a hand in Imran Khan's assassination attempt. This is indeed disturbing and the signs are ominous. Meanwhile, the US on November 3, condemned the attack on former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and said violence had no place in politics and America was deeply committed to a democratic and peaceful Pakistan. Very recently, the mysterious cold-blooded killing of a Pakistani journalist, Arshad Sharif in Kenya for alleged mistaken identity, has raised eyebrows on the Army’s role in exterminating the journalist who was thought to be close to Imran Khan. Therefore, in other words, Army and the ISI will find it extremely difficult to extricate itself from their alleged conspiracy in the November 3 Imran assassination attempt case. In the meantime, further interesting revelations are expected to make the case more gripping as Pakistan slips into a certain political tumult and uncertainly as the conspiratorial mystery is unlikely to clear the mist in the near foreseeable future.
