Qatar says Hamas political bureau in Doha 'useful' for hostage release amid war with Israel

Palestinian militant group Hamas said that on Moscow's request, it is trying to find eight Russian-Israeli dual citizens who were held captive during its attack on Israel to free them, Russian news agencies reported on Saturday (Oct 28).

Russia, which has begun diplomatic efforts to free hostages held in Gaza, does not consider Hamas to be a terror group and has good relations with it.

"From the Russian side, via the foreign ministry, we received a list of citizens that have dual citizenship," senior Hamas representative Moussa Abu Marzook was cited as saying by the RIA Novosti news agency.&nbsp;

"We are looking for those people... It is hard but we are looking. And when we find them, we will let them go."&nbsp;

"We are very attentive to this list and will process it carefully because we consider Russia to be the closest friend," he said. &nbsp;

"About the peaceful citizens that were taken and that are now in Gaza, we treat them as guests."&nbsp;

<h2>Russia says Israel's Gaza bombardment</h2>

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Israel's bombardment of Gaza is against international law and imperils creating a cataclysm that could last for years.

Lavrov made the remarks in an interview with the Belarusian state news agency Belta, which released them on Saturday.

"While we condemn terrorism, we categorically disagree that you can respond to terrorism by violating the norms of international humanitarian law, including indiscriminately using force against targets where civilians are known to be present, including hostages that have been taken," said Lavrov.

"If Gaza is destroyed and 2 million inhabitants are expelled, as some politicians in Israel and abroad propose, this will create a catastrophe for many decades, if not centuries," warned Lavrov.

"It is necessary to stop, and to announce humanitarian programmes to save the population under blockade."

Lavrov also said that Russia was in close contact with Israel too.

"We remain in full contact with Israel, and our ambassador is regularly in touch with them," said Lavrov.

"We are sending signals about the need to seek a peaceful solution and not to follow through with this announced 'scorched earth' strategy."&nbsp;

The Israeli military on Tuesday (October 24) dropped leaflets in Gaza urging Palestinians to provide information about hostages being held by Hamas. The military has offered protection and a reward to those who give information.

When they launched cross-border raid into Israel in October 7, the Hamas terrorists captured more than 200 people.

"If your will is to live in peace and to have a better future for your children, do the humanitarian deed immediately and share verified and valuable information about hostages being held in your area," the Israeli military said in the leaflet.

"The Israeli military assures you that it will invest maximum effort in providing security for you and your home, and you will receive a financial reward. We guarantee you complete confidentiality."

AFP reported that people taking refuge at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza tore the leaflets after they were dropped by Israeli planes.

"We don't care, do whatever you want. All of us in Gaza are telling you, we are resisting, from east to west," said a Palestinian man as quoted by AFP.

Israel has massed forces near the border with the Gaza strip and there is speculation of a ground assault with an aim to free hostages and tackle Hamas.

Israel says that foreign nationals are among the hostages who have been taken to Gaza. The exact whereabouts of those abducted are not known.

<h2>Two hostages freed</h2>

Hamas on Tuesday, freed two elderly hostages. Yocheved Lifshitz (85) and Nurit Cooper (79) were among the people abducted by Hamas terrorists on October 7.

Lifshitz, seated in a wheelchair, interacted with media after her release.

While recounting her ordeal, she said that she 'went through hell'

She described how the terrorists "went on a rampage in our kibbutz, kidnapped me, lay me over a motorcycle... and sped off with me through the ploughed fields". She added that the fighters beat her on the way.

"...they didn't break my ribs but hurt me very much," she said.

She however said that during captivity, "they treated us well" adding that her captors were courteous and a doctor visited every two to three days.

Lifshitz's husband is still in captivity.

"They had everything that men and women needed including shampoo," she told journalists. "We ate the same food they did -- pitas with cream cheese, melted cheese, cucumbers."

During an event at the White House when asked if he would support a “hostages-for-ceasefire” deal, the US president said, “We should have those hostages released and then we can talk.”

Subsequently, he apologised for having to leave the event to promote his economic programme ahead of the US presidential election next year and said he had to go to the White House situation room for “another issue I have to deal with.”

Notably, the US president’s departure came after the Palestinian militant group said they had freed two more female hostages abducted from Israel.&nbsp;

This comes days after an American mother and daughter duo Judith and Natalie Raanan were freed. Israel, earlier on Monday, increased the number of those abducted to 222.&nbsp;

The Vatican earlier said the call, which lasted about 20 minutes, “focused on conflict situations in the world and the need to identify paths to peace.”

Prior to the US president’s remarks, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters that Washington has rejected calls to pause operations and said that a ceasefire would “give Hamas the ability to rest, to refit and to get ready to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel.”&nbsp;

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday (Oct 23) that he expected the 27-nation bloc’s leaders to call jointly for a “humanitarian pause” to let aid into Gaza given the dire conditions.&nbsp;

However, Miller said that the US was separately working to ensure a flow of humanitarian relief into Gaza with its envoy, David Satterfield, on the ground working “intensively” on aid.&nbsp;

Israel had a “legitimate right” to strike against “a terrorist organisation that has embedded its infrastructure inside civilian buildings”, including schools and hospitals, said Miller when asked about Israeli strikes in Gaza.&nbsp;

He added that Washington is advising that Israel “should do that in a way that minimises to the maximum extent possible civilian harm".

US President Biden says may support Gaza ceasefire only after hostages are freed

Terrorist group Hamas claimed on Friday (Oct 13) that at least 13 hostages held in Gaza were killed in Israeli air strikes over the past 24 hours.

Hamas hinted that amongst the hostages killed were Israelis and foreigners.

According to Israeli authorities, Hamas has taken more than 150 people hostage, including both civilians and military personnel.

Hamas said six of the hostages were killed in strikes on two separate locations in the Northern district, while seven others died in strikes that hit three locations in the Gaza district, as reported by AFP.

Around 4,000 people took part in the protests on Thursday, said a spokesperson from the community to Al Jazeera. The spokesperson, who was not identified in the media report, also denied claims of the presence of armed groups calling it an attempt to delegitimise the protesters’ demands.&nbsp;

Britain on Friday condemned Russian proxy authorities in Donbas for what it called an "egregious breach" of the Geneva convention in sentencing to death two British nationals captured in the separatist region while fighting for Ukraine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesman said he was talking to Ukraine rather than Russia over the situation facing Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, who were convicted of "mercenary activities" on Thursday by a court in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).

Aslin's family said he and Pinner "are not, and never were mercenaries."

They had been living in Ukraine when the war broke out and "as members of Ukrainian armed forces, should be treated with respect just like any other prisoners of war," the family said in a statement.

This swap can be attributed to the efforts made by Afghan government to conduct direct talks with the Taliban. The latter have always referred to the Afghan government as an illegitimate puppet regime.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/taliban-still-holding-western-hostages-spokesman-262471">hostages held by the Taliban</a> include an American named Kevin King and an Australian named Timothy Weeks. They're both university professors slated to be released today.

"Our three prisoners had been freed on Monday night," said one of the sources, a senior Taliban leader in Afghanistan, who declined to be identified because he was not authorised to speak publicly about the deal.

"Soon after their release, they were flown to Doha and handed over to the political office in Qatar", the source added.

This swap came in the aftermath of an announcement on November 12 by President Ashraf Ghani. He had said that Afghanistan would free Anas Haqqani, a senior figure in the eponymous Haqqani network responsible for some of the worst violence in recent years, and two Taliban commanders.&nbsp;

An earlier swap was scheduled but was later cancelled as the Taliban abruptly shifted their hostages to a new location as the commanders were unable to land in Qatar.

The Haqqani network has in recent years carried out large-scale militant attacks on Afghan civilians. It is believed to be based in Pakistan and is part of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

King and Weeks were kidnapped in August 2016 from outside the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul where both worked as professors.

Suspected ethnic Rakhine rebels disguised as a sports team stormed a bus in rural Myanmar and took 31 hostages -- mostly off-duty firefighters and construction workers -- authorities said Sunday.

The state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar said the bus -- travelling to the Rakhine state capital of Sittwe -- was flagged down by a man dressed in civilian attire before 18 rebels in sportswear emerged from the forest and ordered the passengers off at gunpoint.

"We are still following them," Colonel Win Zaw Oo told AFP, adding the insurgents may have mistaken the firemen for members of the armed forces.

The Arakan Army, which is fighting for more autonomy for ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Myanmar's army has deployed thousands of troops to the state to try to crush the rebels.

Rights groups say Myanmar's military has abducted civilians and tortured detainees, but the army points to targeted shootings, roadside bombings and kidnapping by insurgents.&nbsp;

Rakhine state was also the site of a deadly crackdown that in August 2017 drove some 740,000 minority Rohingya Muslims into Bangladesh.

A UN fact-finding mission warned in a report published last month that some 600,000 Rohingya remaining in Myanmar still face a "serious risk of genocide".

French security forces detained the man who took hostages in central Paris and rescued all of the captives safe and sound, the interior minister said.

The Paris Police Prefecture said that there was "a police intervention" underway in an advertising agency in the Rue des Petites-Écuries in the 10th arrondissement of the French capital, CNN reported.

Two hostages were held after which the police launched an evacuation operation to help bring them out of the building.

The hostage-taker claimed to be in possession of two bombs and had asked to speak with the Iranian ambassador in Paris and with the French government.

The police described the accused as an "unstable person" and confirmed that he did not seem to have any connection with any terrorist outfit.

Further, the motive of the accused has also not been disclosed yet.&nbsp
