With several aged care centres battling a shortage of staff, the support of defence personnel in such facilities is to be extended until the end of September, Defence Minister Richard Marles said.

The surge has also affected frontline workers in a number of institutions resulting in a shortage of people who are equipped enough to take care of the situation. However, the country has promised to boost their vaccination drive with most people in line to receive booster doses at this point.

Australia registers record number of COVID-19 cases as Omicron surges

First cases of diphtheria of the throat have been diagnosed in New South Wales this century, a toddler is in intensive care and a second child has been hospitalised after contracting the disease. 
Diphtheria is a contagious and potentially deadly bacterial infection. It affects the throat and tonsils in its most severe form, resulting in a greyish-white membrane forming that can make it hard to swallow and breathe.

The North Coast Public Health Unit confirmed the case in a two-year-old child in northern NSW on Saturday. On Sunday, a six-year-old described as a “close family contact” was also confirmed to have the infection. The infection can also cause the neck to swell, according to NSW Health, while the toxin formed by bacteria can cause inflammation of the heart muscle and nerves.

“Diphtheria is very rare in Australia due to our longstanding childhood immunisation program. However, the disease has very serious outcomes and can be fatal,” he added. The diphtheria vaccination is free and readily available for everyone from six weeks of age.

He was inspired by Gandhiji who said that the future of this country would depend upon the quality of education and healthcare services. That is when Lala Jeevanmal decided to make all four of his sons doctors. After independence, the family shifted to Delhi, and the tradition continued.

This is when the legacy of making everyone in the family doctor started. “This has been going on for the past 102 years. But this is not an easy job, as one of the sons of the family started studying for a management degree, but the grandmother‘s emotional appeal and the family‘s atmosphere compelled the son to leave management studies and pursue the medical profession. He is a successful surgeon today,” says Ankush Sabbarwal.

It is expected that the daughters-in-law of the family will be doctors too and will join the family hospital.

A man in United States brought his entire gaming system—Xbox, monitor and a headset—to a hospital where his girlfriend&nbsp;was in labour.

The video of the dad-to-be was posted on TikTok by his partner Amber and has since gone viral. It has reportedly been viewed over 1.6 million times and has gained 45,000 likes and 3,200 comments.

In the clip, the man can purportedly be seen sitting at the foot of the hospital bed playing a shooting game while his girlfriend watches.

The man apparently brought his gaming console to “kill the time” while his Amber was in labour&nbsp;for 21 hours.

“My boyfriend brought his entire gaming system to the hospital during my 21-hour long induction,” Amber wrote at the top of the video, according to the Mirror.

However, several people were displeased with the man’s behaviour, and many questioned his commitment to take care of her pregnant partner.

“Wow. Red flag, friend,” commented one user.

“I love my games, but I’ve never attempted to do this got better things to worry about,” chimed in another user.

Someone else said: "I wouldn’t mind after labour but during is a different story."

But there were others who jumped in to defend the man.

One person said, "I mean what ya wanted him to do? Sit there for 21 hours staring at her? She was probably more entertained watching him play... I would be."

Another viewer commented: "I went through a long induction process as well and I definitely wouldn’t have minded if my kid's father brought his game."

However, the new mother quickly came to his partner’s defence, saying that she was “okay” with the father bringing his console and that she really didn’t feel any pain until 19 hours had gone by.

Amber also assured everyone that she also had a way of passing the time by watching movies and browsing TikTok.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry on Monday said that a pregnant woman who was pictured being carried from a Ukrainian maternity hospital after it was bombed by Russian forces has died along with her unborn baby. The heart-wrenching image by The Associated Press shows the woman stroking her lower abdomen which is full of blood.

Last week, Russia bombed a children's hospital in the port city of Mariupol. As per Ukraine, the bombing in the besieged city took place during a supposed ceasefire that was meant to facilitate the escape of hundreds of civilians in the city.

President Volodymr Zelenskiy called it an "atrocity".

The woman in the picture was immediately rushed to another hospital. When she realised that her baby had died, the medics said, she cried out, "Kill me now!"

The Associated Press spoke to surgeon Timur Marin, who found the woman's pelvis crushed and hip detached. Medics delivered the baby through cesarean section. However, it showed "no signs of life," the surgeon said.

"More than 30 minutes of resuscitation of the mother didn't produce results. Both died," Marin added.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry posted video footage of what appeared to be the badly damaged building of what it said was the children's and maternity hospital.

The footage showed holes where windows should have been in a three-storey building at the hospital, and huge piles of rubble, some of it smouldering.&nbsp;

The winds knocked out power for over 140,000 homes in the UK, mostly in the southwest, and 80,000 properties in Ireland.

The UK was already going through power cuts and travel destructions due to storm Dudley. Several flood warnings were also issued for the Cumbrian coastline and Keswick Campsite. Not just this but 42 flood alerts were issued across northern England as well.

His heart transplant surgery was to take place in Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston. But now, the hospital is refusing to carry out the procedure.

“Like many other transplant programs in the United States – the Covid-19 vaccine is one of several vaccines and lifestyle behaviors required for transplant candidates in the Mass General Brigham system in order to create both the best chance for a successful operation and also the patient’s survival after transplantation,” explained the hospital as quoted by The Guardian.

Medical experts in the area are supporting the stance taken by hospital. They are saying that organ transplant is followed by weakening of immune system in the immediate aftermath and if a patient is vaccinated against Covid, he or she stands better chance to be protected from Covid infection which can create major trouble for the patient in their weakened state.

Ferguson's family is not sure about future course of action. They said they thinking about several options but are running out of time.

Harassed by hospital over cross necklace for years, Christian nurse wins lawsuit in UK

New York state on Saturday added more hospitals to its list of those ordered to postpone elective surgeries for at least two weeks as the surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

The list now includes 40 hospitals that have “met the state’s threshold for ‘high risk regions’ or low-capacity facilities,” the Department of Health said in a statement Saturday.

All 31 hospitals in the Mohawk Valley, Finger Lakes and Central regions are now included on the list, and the nine others are scattered throughout the state, according to the statement. None are in New York City. The hospitals must cancel procedures starting Thursday.

The size of the list has fluctuated since early December, when an executive order issued by Gov. Kathy Hochul went into effect to limit elective surgeries before another spike in cases. There were 28 hospitals on the list as recently as December 20.

“We will use every available tool to help ensure that hospitals can manage the COVID-19 winter surge,” Dr. Mary T. Bassett, the acting health commissioner, said in a statement Saturday. “I want to remind New Yorkers that getting vaccinated and boosted remain the best way to protect against serious illness and hospitalisation from COVID-19. Vaccination also protects our hospital system. We cannot return to the early months of the pandemic when hospitals were overwhelmed.”

As the Omicron variant of the coronavirus sweeps through New York, many hospitals are being pushed to their limits by the twin challenges of soaring new cases and growing shortages of nurses, doctors and technicians.

New York state reported a record 90,132 daily new cases, Hochul’s office said Saturday. In the past three days, 439 people have died from the virus, an 80% increase from the same period a week earlier. Two hundred of those deaths were in New York City, more than doubling the number from last week.

While the latest virus wave appears to be less deadly than earlier ones, with far fewer patients on ventilators, even large hospitals with empty intensive care unit beds are straining to handle the rise in caseloads because so many workers are out, health care officials said.

Under Hochul’s executive order, hospitals must stop elective procedures when certain metrics are reached, including:

The army’s medical team rushed to the location. After an initial assessment of the patient, an emergency evacuation was planned on viewing the critical situation. &nbsp;

As it was difficult to run a vehicle due to heavy snowfall, army prepared a stretcher and took the patient till Salasan on it and then shifted her to a Public Health Centre (PHC) ambulance there. &nbsp;

"Thereafter, without losing much time, the evacuation team including Battlefield Nursing Assistants (BFNA) moved her from Ghaggar Hill along with porters towards Salasan at 11 am," army said. &nbsp;

In spite of heavy snowfall, the team safely brought the patient to Salasan by covering a distance of 6.5 km and handed over her to the team of paramedics from PHC Boniyar at 1.45 pm. &nbsp;

For swift action and timely assistance, the family and locals expressed gratitude towards army, civil administration and PHC Boniyar. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The army’s medical team rushed to the location. After an initial assessment of the patient, an emergency evacuation was planned on viewing the critical situation. "Thereafter, without losing much time, the evacuation team including Battlefield Nursing Assistants (BFNA) moved her from Ghaggar Hill along with porters towards Salasan at 11 am," army said. In spite of heavy snowfall, the team safely brought the patient to Salasan by covering a distance of 6.5 km and handed over her to the team of paramedics from PHC Boniyar at 1.45 pm. COVID-19 patients in Singapore who do not get vaccinated by choice will have to pay their hospitalisation bills, starting from December 8, the government has said. The government excludes those who have tested positive soon after returning from overseas travel. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung has described this decision as an "important signal" to those who are not getting jabbed.

"Currently, unvaccinated persons make up a sizeable majority of those who require intensive inpatient care, and disproportionately contribute to the strain on our healthcare resources," the Ministry of Health said.

MediSave and MediShield are both linked to compulsory savings under the Central Provident Fund covering all employees.

"Billing will still be based on our current subsidy framework, subject to MediSave use and MediShield Life claims, so it will still be highly supported and highly subsidised," Ong Ye Kung said.

Meanwhile, Singapore recently opened its borders to more countries for quarantine-free travel. This comes as the city-state seeks to rebuild its status as an international aviation hub, and prepares to reach a "new normal" to adapt to COVID-19.

The team must also include a senior officer from Public Works Department (with background of civil engineering) to inquire into lapses in infrastructure and layout and a senior police officer not below the rank of Inspector General, it said.

The Commission also sought to know the number of children affected due to the fire incident and details of hospitals where infants have been shifted.

"Further, it may kindly be ensured that infants shifted in other hospitals have SNCUs and are provided with all the necessary treatment. The families of the deceased infants may kindly be provided with adequate compensation," the NCPCR said.

It sought a preliminary action taken report within three days.

The NCPCR also asked states and union territories to conduct fire safety audits in all hospitals, medical colleges, nursing homes having medical facilities for children.

Earlier this year, at least 10 newborns died in a fire at a government hospital in Maharashtra's Bhandara.

Quoting these incidents, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) chairperson Priyank Kanongoo asked all states to carry out fire audits.

"To prevent recurrence of fire incidents in hospitals, NCPCR recommends that fire safety audits should be undertaken in all hospitals/medical colleges/nursing homes having Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Special Newborn Care Units and other medical facilities for children," the NCPCR said.

"Further, it may be ensured that such medical facilities meant for children should get 'no objection certificate' (NOC) from fire department and get renewal only after they meet the given criteria," it added.
