News Alert: 50 pro-democracy activists arrested in Hong Kong under NSL

HONG KONG — The Chinese legal authorities have threatened to revoke the licenses of two lawyers hired to help a group of Hong Kong protesters who were arrested last year while trying to flee to Taiwan by speedboat.

Ten of the activists were convicted last week by a court in the mainland Chinese city of Shenzhen of illegal boundary crossing and sentenced to prison terms ranging from seven months to three years. Two other members of the group who were minors at the time of their arrest in August were returned to Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese territory.

For Hong Kong’s pro-democracy opposition, the case has highlighted fears of the Communist Party-controlled legal system on the mainland and the risks it poses to the city’s tradition of an independent judiciary.

Most of the group faced charges in Hong Kong connected with anti-government protests in 2019, including arson, rioting, assaulting police officers and weapons possession. One member, Andy Li, was under investigation on suspicion of violating the national security law imposed on Hong Kong last year. They were arrested by the Chinese coast guard on their way to Taiwan, a self-governing democracy that Beijing claims as its territory, and detained on the mainland.

The two lawyers, Lu Siwei and Ren Quanniu, were hired by family members of the activists but were barred from representing them. Instead, the defendants were forced to rely on government-appointed lawyers.

The two lawyers have taken on many sensitive cases. Lu was formally reprimanded after representing another human rights lawyer in 2019 who had openly criticized the Chinese leadership. Ren recently represented Zhang Zhan, a citizen journalist sentenced last week to four years in prison for her reporting on the coronavirus outbreak in the mainland Chinese city of Wuhan.

Ren received a notice from the Department of Justice in Henan province, where he is licensed, saying he faced disbarment over his handling of a 2018 case in which he represented a member of Falun Gong, the banned spiritual group. He said that case was most likely an excuse.

“The direct reason is definitely related to the Hong Kongers’ case and Shanghai Zhang Zhan case,” he said in an audio message.

A letter sent to Lu by the Department of Justice in Sichuan province, where he is registered, said he was accused of “repeatedly publishing unsuitable language online,” without offering details. He said he planned to request a hearing, and called the authorities’ case against him “inexplicable suppression and persecution.”

Chinese authorities have for years used annual licensing requirements to intimidate lawyers involved in sensitive cases, wielding the threat of disbarment to punish those who don’t back down.

Lu and Ren were each given three days to arrange hearings over their licenses, but Ren said he had little hope of a successful appeal.

A group representing family members of the activists said they believed the timing of the actions against the two lawyers indicated that they were “obviously revenge for their involvement” in the Hong Kong case.

“For their daring to go against the powers that be, and persistence in upholding the rights of the twelve, the authorities have resorted to ending their professional career and cutting off their livelihoods,” the families said in a statement.

The families have said they hope to visit their imprisoned relatives as soon as possible, but so far have received little information from the state-appointed lawyers.

China moves to punish lawyers hired to help Hong Kong activists

Ken Lee is among the snake catchers in Hong Kong who is called when one of these reptiles is spotted slithering into a home or coming alarmingly close to a residential area.

Hong Kong is home to a variety of snakes from the venomous king cobra to larger species such as the Burmese python.

While commercial snake catchers of yesteryear, whose catch is often served up as soup in the city's snake shops. However, what makes Lee unique is that he does not sell the snakes he captures. He is part of a new breed of snake catchers who strive to release the reptiles back into nature.

''There are occasions where people have caught the snakes before I arrived on the scene, but unfortunately, some of them were killed or fatally injured,'' said 31-year-old Lee, who is one of Hong Kongs youngest registered snake catchers.

''Some people caught the snakes bravely, but actually, it caused harm to wildlife,'' he added.

Like many other snake catchers in the city, Lee is self-taught. He first started handling snakes at the age of 17, when he worked as an apprentice in a Hong Kong snake shop. His experience spurred him to learn more about biodiversity and biology, and he eventually went on to study that at a university in Taiwan.

When Lee catches snakes, he uses a range of equipment: puncture-proof gloves, sticks, hooks, a torch and bags. At times, he even uses his bare hands.

In early December, he made headlines when he successfully captured a 3-meter-long (10-foot-long) Burmese python in a village located in a rural part of Hong Kong. The same month, Lee was also called to a high-rise residential building in a rural area to capture a bamboo pit viper, a common, venomous green snake whose bite can cause a nasty swell.

The snakes he catches are sent to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden, a local nonprofit organization that shelters rescued wild animals. After a health check, most of the creatures are then released back into the local parks.

''I hope all these wild animals could be returned to nature,'' Lee said.

Currently, he works as a research assistant at four universities in the city and volunteers at the Hong Kong Society of Herpetology Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the study of reptiles and amphibians.

Even though Hong Kong has ample green areas that serve as different habitats for snakes, Liz Rose-Jeffreys, Kadoorie Farm's conservation officer, thinks the city's urban development may threaten the survival of snake species.

''I think this is one of mutual respect, really. They are our wild neighbours, they've been here a lot longer than us, and I think we have a duty to respect nature,'' she said.

''They form an important part of our ecosystem, so if we have to remove snakes, then it would upset the balance that has been established for many years.''

'Breaking stereotypes': Meet Ken Lee, Hong Kong's animal friendly snake catcher

A prominent rights group staged an act of defiance on New Year's Day for the first time in 12 months -- on a much smaller scale -- calling for release of "political prisoners" who were arrested for demonstrations against the draconian National Security Law imposed by Beijing.

In response, police fired several rounds of tear gas and water cannon at crowds including families before halting the event.

According to South China Morning Post, the three-person demonstration was organised by the Civil Human Rights Front, which has seen its applications for events repeatedly rejected by police over the past year.

The front is the group behind the city's annual July 1 march, as well as three massive 2019 protests against the since-withdrawn extradition bill that drew hundreds of thousands of participants into the streets.

Friday's show of solidarity with jailed activists was minuscule, but was nonetheless heavily scrutinised by police.

"Free Hong Kong political prisoners," Figo Chan Ho-wun, the front's convenor, chanted from the roof of a white van parked outside its first stop, the Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre.

"We demand the release of all political prisoners, including civil rights activists in mainland China and Hongkongers, as well as the comrades detained behind us [in Lai Chi Kok]," said Chan, as quoted by South China Morning Post.

Chan faces a raft of public order charges accumulated over the past two years. He was joined by Lee Cheuk-yan atop the van, which was flanked on either side by banners reading "free all political prisoners".

Lee called out messages of support to protesters and political figures inside the reception centre across the road, including media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, who was returned to custody by the Court of Final Appeal on Thursday to await trial on money-laundering and national security law charges.

"The creative protest was designed to get around a ban on gatherings of more than two, put in place by authorities to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Activists have argued police have used the ban to stifle freedom of assembly, refusing to grant permission for protests even at times where the infection count seemed to ease," South China Morning Post reported further.

Earlier this week, the front said that it would replace its annual full-scale New Year's march with the lower-key van event due to its own concerns over coronavirus.

After departing from Lai Chi Kok, the group next headed to Tsim Sha Tsui, before ending at the Legislative Council complex at Admiralty.

However, after they began chanting slogans at Lai Chi Kok, a group of "uniformed officers" arrived to join the dozen plain-clothes police already at the scene.

"More than once, they accused the three men - Chan, Lee and the front's deputy convenor, Sam Yip Kam-lung - of violating the ban on gatherings, Chan said. They were also asked to turn down the volume of their speaker," SCMP reported.

It was further reported since the extradition bill sparked massive waves of protests in June 2019, police have arrested more than 10,000 people in connection with the movement and more than 3000 of them were prosecuted.

"The front will continue to fight for our rights to demonstrate and assemble. We will not give up just because we know the police will reject us," he said.

The draconian National Security Law imposed on the city by Beijing criminalises secession, subversion and collusion with foreign forces and carries with it strict prison terms. It came into effect from July 1.

Several of those disqualified were sitting lawmakers, who weresubsequently ejected from the parliament by Beijing overruling constitutional precedent and bypassing Hong Kong's courts on November 11, sparking the mass resignation of the entire pro-democratic camp.

Thousands rally in Hong Kong New Year protest

Hong Kong's court remanded tycoon Jimmy Lai, the most high profile Hong-Konger will be in custody until another bail hearing on 1st of February. Jimmy Lai is the vocal critic of Beijing. Taiwan activists voice objection against Lai's remand.

Hong Kong court remands Jimmy Lai Again

Hong Kong's pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai was ordered back to jail on Thursday as Hong Kong's highest court upheld prosecutors' appeal against his bail. Jimmy Lai is one of the most prominent Beijing critic from Hong Kong who has been booked under the new National Security Law. The law was passed by China and imposed on the financial hub in June this year.

73-year-old Jimmy Lai served 20 days in custody before being granted bail last Wednesday on stringent conditions. These included a USD 1.3 million bond and surrender if all travel documents. He was placed under house arrest and even banned from tweeting.

However, Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal granted permission for the prosecution to appeal the bail decision. The prosecution said that a lower judge may "have erred in his construction or application" of Article 42 in the new legislation.

That article states that bail should not be granted unless the judge sees sufficient grounds to believe the defendant will not commit the alleged offence again.

"We have held that it is reasonably arguable that the Judge's decision was erroneous and that his order admitting the respondent to bail was invalid," a determination handed down by the Court of Final Appeal read.
It also granted the prosecution's application for Lai to be held in custody pending the appeal, to be heard on February 1.

Jimmy Lai has been accused by the authorities of colluding with foreign countries by calling on overseas governments to sanction Hong Kong and China in response to an ongoing crackdown on pro-democracy activism in the city.
More than 1,000 of his tweets and a number of media interviews he gave have been examined by the prosecution.

Lai was the first defendant charged under the security law to be granted bail, but prosecutors rushed to the top court for an urgent hearing applying for leave to appeal the decision.

China's top party mouthpiece People's Daily had criticised the bail decision for "damaging Hong Kong's rule of law".

China's authoritarian leaders guaranteed Hong Kong would maintain key freedoms and autonomy after its 1997 handover by Britain, under a model dubbed "One Country, Two Systems".

But a historic retreat from that promise is underway, in response to recent years' unrest.

A multi-million-dollar property sale by the US Consulate in Hong Kong has been put on hold because it has not received permission from Beijing.

The two countries have been at loggerheads for months over trade, human rights and a clampdown on Hong Kong, with Beijing increasingly willing to wield its economic power to push back against what it says is American interference in internal affairs.

This particular deal for six luxury pads in a swanky part of the island would have seen the US State Department pocket US$330 million. But it appears to have fallen victim to growing tensions between Washington and Beijing, who insisted it was no ordinary property transaction and needed a specific go-ahead.

Hong Kong's Hang Lung Properties had agreed to pay HK$2.6 billion for the six plots earlier this year. But on Wednesday, it said the sale could not be completed as scheduled, because Hong Kong's Land Registry had not received written consent from Beijing.

The company said it had received a letter from the Land Registry advising that the "sale of the property involves foreign affairs between the People's Republic of China and the US, and should not be regarded as an ordinary commercial activity".

Hang Lung said it had been told the US government had a "diplomatic obligation" to make a written application to Beijing at least 60 days prior to any intended real estate transaction in Hong Kong, and obtain written consent for it; and that the Land Registry could not proceed without this. The company noted that it was not made aware of this requirement beforehand.

US consulate Hong Kong property sale stuck in diplomatic row

A group of Hong Kong pro-democracy activists who were caught trying to flee the country on a speedboat were caught and tried in a Chinese court on December 28 on charges linked to an illegal border crossing.

As the trial began in China, the United States urged China to release the detainees and called out China's "tyranny". Now, after a day of the trial, the European Union has followed the suit and is demanding the immediate release of the 12 activists.

"According to credible sources, Ms Zhang has been subject to torture and ill-treatment during her detention and her health condition has seriously deteriorated. It is crucial that she receives adequate medical assistance," EU foreign policy spokesman Peter Stano said in a statement.

The EU listed Li Yuhan, Huang Qi, Ge Jueping, Qin Yongmin, Gao Zhisheng, Ilham Tohti, Tashi Wangchuk, Wu Gan, Liu Feiyue "as well as all those who have engaged in reporting activities in the public interest".

China trial of 'Hong Kong 12' begins as US decries 'tyranny'

At least seven of arrested 12 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists will face trial in mainland China on December 28.

These activists were arrested as they tried to flee the territory by speedboat to Taiwan.

Relatives of seven detainees have been told by Chinese government-appointed lawyers that a hearing would take place Monday afternoon at Yantian District People's Court in the southern city of Shenzhen, according to the Save 12 HK Youths campaign.

The group was caught by the coastguard 70 kilometres (40 miles) southeast of Hong Kong on August 23, before being transferred to police in Shenzhen. They are accused of charges linked to crossing a border illegally.

The activists -- whose arrests were formally approved in September -- have since disappeared into China's opaque judicial system, with family members expressing fear over their fate.

Last week, Chinese authorities announced that the prosecution process for the 12 had begun.

Hong Kong extended a compulsory quarantine by an extra seven days to 21 days for all visitors outside China, effective Friday, in stepped-up efforts to prevent a new variant of the novel coronavirus from spreading.

Authorities also banned all people who have stayed in South Africa in the past 21 days from boarding for Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has already banned all flights arriving from the United Kingdom from Monday and the city said on Wednesday two students who returned from the UK were likely to be infected with the new super-virulent strain of COVID-19.

In a statement midnight on Friday, authorities said people who have stayed in places outside China during the 21 days before their arrival have to undergo 21 days of compulsory quarantine in designated quarantine hotels.

"Noting the drastic change of the global pandemic situation with the new virus variant found in more countries, there is a need for the government to introduce resolute measures immediately... to ensure that no case would slip through the net even under very exceptional cases where the incubation period of the virus is longer than 14 days," a government spokesman said.

Eight prominent Hong Kong democracy activists were charged Thursday with taking part in an "illegal assembly" on the day after Beijing imposed its broad security law, bolstering an already sweeping crackdown on dissent.

Those charged included veteran activist "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung, the former chief of Hong Kong's Democratic Party Wu Chi-wai, ex-legislator Eddie Chu and Figo Chan, the organiser of an annual July 1 rally marking the British handover of the city to China in 1997.

Both Chan and Leung chanted slogans inside the court after the charges were read out, an AFP reporter said.

Chan shouted "Release all political prisoners" while Leung chanted "Peaceful assembly is not a crime. Shame on political persecution."

The group have been hit with various "unlawful assembly" charges -- namely organising, inciting or taking part in an illegal gathering.

The charges stem from protests that broke out on July 1 this year -- the anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China.

The date has traditionally witnessed large pro-democracy protests in a city where millions have taken to the streets in recent years.

During months of protests that swept the city in 2019, the legislature was stormed on handover day by crowds in an unprecedented challenge to Beijing's rule.

Deeply concerned, says UK after Hong Kong media tycoon produced in court

Hong Kong media tycoon and China-critic Jimmy Lai was produced in court on Saturday to face charges under Hong Kong's national security law. He has been accused of colluding with foreign countries by calling on overseas governments to sanction Hong Kong and China in response to the crackdown on pro-democracy activism in the city. If Jimmy Lai is found guilty, he may spend his life in jail.

Jimmy Lai is the most high-profile person who has been charged under the new law.

The prosecutor told the court that Lai broke the security law between July 1 and December 1 by requesting that a foreign country or institution, organisation or individual "impose sanctions or blockade, or engage in other hostile activities" against Hong Kong and China.

Lai was dressed in a suit and appeared calm. He said he acknowledged the charges.

Chief Magistrate Victor So, one of the six magistrates hand-picked by the city's pro-Beijing leader Carrie Lam to handle national security cases, said the prosecution needed time to further investigate.

This included examining more than a thousand messages from Lai's Twitter accounts, a number of media interviews the tycoon gave, and a number of overseas visits in relation to calls for US sanctions against Hong Kong and China.

After the hearing, Lai's supporters shouted words of encouragement, which he returned with a heart-shape hand gesture.

Lai's popular Apple Daily newspaper, citing sources, said the bulk of the police case revolved around social media posts and interviews Lai gave to Western media.

It reported that the police allegations said Lai had followed 53 people on Twitter including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and a member of Britain's Conservative Party, Luke de Pulford, and that he had 120,000 followers including Tiananmen student protest leaders Wang Dan and Wuer Kai Xi.

Lai has been accused of colluding with foreign forces. Jimmy Lai was detained last week. "After further investigation by the police's National Security Department, a 73-year old man is charged with one count of 'collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security," police said in a statement. Hong Kong authorities have intensified a crackdown on key opposition figures since Beijing circumvented the territory's legislature and imposed sweeping national security legislation on the global financial centre on June 30. Critics of the national security law say that the law crushes freedoms enshrined under the "one country, two systems" formula, while supporters say it will bring stability after prolonged anti-China, pro-democracy protests last year. Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai charged under national security law

A Hong Kong teenager was found guilty on Friday of insulting China's national flag and unlawful assembly as Beijing accelerates its crackdown on dissent and the city's pro-democracy movement.

Pro-Beijing authorities have increasingly targeted the most prominent activists in the finance hub, including young leaders such as Joshua Wong and Agnes Chow, who were jailed last week.

Tony Chung, a 19-year-old who led a now-disbanded pro-democracy group, was convicted for throwing the Chinese flag to the ground during scuffles outside Hong Kong's legislature in May 2019.

"The actions of the defendant were out of question defiling the national flag in an open manner. The defendant walked back and jumped to throw the flag which made more people able to see what he did," Magistrate Peony Wong said.

He was arrested by plainclothes police opposite the US consulate in late October and had been remanded in custody since.

Speculation has swirled that police moved on Chung because he was hoping to ask for asylum at the US consulate in Hong Kong.

He did not plead guilty to the flag insult or unlawful assembly, which carry a maximum of three and five years respectively.

He will be sentenced on December 29.

"Hong Kongers hang in there," Chung shouted to supporters in court.

Chung is also the first person to be prosecuted under the sweeping new national security law imposed in June by Beijing on Hong Kong to quell anti-government protests.

He faces a charge of secession under the new law, which could land him a life sentence, as well as separate charges of money laundering and conspiring to publish seditious content.

After Friday's verdict, the former leader of pro-independence group Student Localism will be jailed while awaiting trial for the more severe national security charge.

- 'Performative' -

The alleged flag offence took place during scuffles between rival supporters as pro-democracy lawmakers inside tried to prevent the passing of a now-abandoned extradition bill.

In footage shared at his trial, Chung is seen holding a Chinese flag seized from a Beijing supporter, which he then throws over his shoulder.

Prosecutors had accused him of an intentional insult, calling his squat, jump and throw of the flag "performative".

Chung denied the charge, arguing that he did not realise it was a Chinese flag.

Magistrate Wong said she did not agree that he did not know the red cloth was the Chinese flag as it was clearly seen being waved by the pro-Beijing camp during the scuffles.

Criminal cases for insulting the Chinese flag were rarely seen in the former British colony, but as tensions over Beijing's rule have risen so have such incidents.

In April, an air conditioning apprentice was jailed for 20 days for trampling on the flag and throwing it in the bin at an anti-government protest.

And in July, a man was handed a five-week sentence for burning the flag last year.

Chung and three other members of Student Localism were first arrested in July on suspicion of inciting secession on social media.

His bail conditions from that arrest prevented him from leaving Hong Kong.

Chung's next court hearing on the national security charge is on January 7.

China is planning to impose sanctions on US officials who have "performed badly" over Hong Kong issues.

Beijing's move has come in response to restrictions slapped on Chinese officials this week over its harsh clampdown on the city.

The financial hub was rocked by pro-democracy protests last year that were largely halted by a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing, drawing criticism over eroding rights from countries including the US.

On Monday, the US said it would freeze any US assets and barring travel to the United States for 14 vice chairs of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, which spearheaded the tough new law.

In response, China has planned to impose "sanctions on US executive officials, congressional personnel, non-governmental organisation personnel... who have performed badly on Hong Kong-related issues," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a press briefing Thursday.

Their immediate family members would also be affected.

The government had also decided to cancel "visa exemption treatment" for temporary visits to Hong Kong and Macau by US diplomatic passport holders.

The moves were "in view of the United States using Hong Kong-related issues to seriously interfere in China's internal affairs," she said, calling for the US to "stop going further down a wrong and dangerous path."

The United States has already slapped sanctions on Hong Kong's pro-Beijing leader, Carrie Lam.

China pushed through the draconian new security law in June.

While critics say it decimates the freedoms once enjoyed in Hong Kong, enshrined in an agreement made before the 1997 handover from British colonial rule back to China, Beijing says the law and prosecution of critics are needed to restore stability after last year's huge and often violent protests.

China to impose sanctions on US officials over Hong Kong issues

Hong Kong authorities are all set to ban dining in restaurants after 6 PM. This is one of the revised measures that will be put in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Hong Kong set to ban dining in restaurants post 6 PM

New restrictions are set to come in force in Hong Kong this Thursday as the city prepares to stem fourth wave of coronavirus infections. Under these restrictions evening dining at restaurants will be prohibited and fitness centres will be closed. Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the rules aim to reduce "number of people on the streets", echoing moves taken by authorities when cases spiked earlier this year.

Under the new restrictions, dining will be banned after 6 pm. Beauty and massage parlors will be forced to close, civil servants will be asked to work from home.

Hong Kong's strict social distancing measures have largely helped keep infections to under 7000 in the city of 7.5 million, with 112 deaths.

But daily recorded cases have risen again to more than 100 on several occasions in recent weeks, the highest level since July.

Speaking ahead of a weekly meeting with policy advisers, Lam said "the strictness of social distancing measures must at least return to the level" of the outbreak's peak in the city in July and August.

Schools, bars and nightclubs have already been ordered to close.

The city's health minister Sophia Chan, speaking later on Tuesday, said the measures would last for two weeks from Thursday until December 23.

Fines for breaching mask-wearing or social gathering rules will be increased to HK$5,000 ($645) from Friday, she said.

Authorities fought the spread of Hong Kong's initial outbreak at the start of the year by shutting schools and restricting travel across the city's border with mainland China, where the virus was first detected.

The territory endured two more Covid-19 infection spikes over the spring and summer, prompting tighter quarantine protocols and economically painful social distancing rules for restaurants and other businesses.

Hong Kong to impose fresh restrictions to curb latest coronavirus wave

The United States on Monday imposed financial sanctions and a travel ban on 14 Chinese officials over their alleged role in Beijing’s disqualification last month of elected opposition legislators in Hong Kong.

The move, which was first reported by Reuters overnight and sent Asian stock markets lower, targeted the vice chairpersons of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC), the top decision-making body of the Chinese legislature.

The action was widely seen as part of an effort by outgoing President Donald Trump to cement his tough-on-China legacy and also box president-elect Joe Biden, before he takes office on Jan. 20, into hardline positions on Beijing at a time of bipartisan anti-China sentiment in Congress.

The Trump administration earlier slapped sanctions on Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, the Asian financial hub’s current and former police chiefs and other top officials in August for what it said was their role in curtailing freedoms in a crackdown on the territory’s pro-democracy movement.

“Beijing’s unrelenting assault against Hong Kong’s democratic processes has gutted its Legislative Council, rendering the body a rubber stamp devoid of meaningful opposition,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.

Hong Kong’s Beijing-backed government last month expelled four opposition members from its legislature after China’s parliament gave city authorities new powers to curb dissent. The move triggered mass resignations by pro-democracy opposition lawmakers in the former British colony.

White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said in November the expulsion showed the “One Country, Two Systems” formula, under which Hong Kong’s autonomy was to be safeguarded after Britain handed the territory back to China in 1997, was now “merely a fig leaf”, and he promised further U.S. action.

Pompeo said the NPCSC has effectively “neutered” the ability of people in Hong Kong to choose their elected representatives. “These actions demonstrate once again Beijing’s complete disregard for its international commitments under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, a U.N.-registered treaty.”

Beijing’s action heightened alarm in the West. The Five Eyes intelligence-sharing group - comprised of Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States - said last month the move appeared to be part of a campaign to silence critics and called on China to reverse course.

The sanctions prohibit 14 individuals and their immediate members from travelling to the United States. Any assets the officials might have within the United States will be blocked and U.S. individuals and companies will be banned from dealing with them.

The news kept global markets on edge as investors fretted over fresh Sino-US tensions, which offset bets over more stimulus in Europe and the United States.

US slaps sanctions on 14 Chinese officials over Hong Kong crackdown

Eight Hong Kong democracy activists including three former lawmakers were arrested Tuesday for their part in a July protest, the latest in a broad crackdown by authorities under a sweeping new security law.

The detained include veteran activist "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-hung, the former chief of Hong Kong's Democratic Party Wu Chi-wai, ex-legislator Eddie Chu and Figo Chan, the organiser of an annual rally marking the British handover of the city to China in 1997.
