<p>In February, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation that uncovered infighting, possible financial missteps, questionable journalistic ethics and a jarring lack of diversity in the HFPA’s ranks. (Not a single one of the organization’s 80-plus voting members, the paper found, were Black.) A New York Times article published a few days later explored the finances of the group, a tax-exempt nonprofit, and reported that it had paid more than $3 million in salaries and other compensation to its members and staff, and that a tax filing showed it had paid $1.3 million in travel costs one year.</p>

<p>The scandal-ridden group also came under scrutiny after reports revealed that more than one-third of the HFPA members had been flown on a luxury press trip to the French set of the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” in 2019, after which the critically panned comedy picked up two Golden Globes nominations.</p>

<p><strong>How has the HFPA responded?</strong></p>

<p>During the 2021 Golden Globes telecast in February, leaders of the group committed to diversifying their membership — a vague, underwhelming overture that fell flat in Hollywood. Then, after NBC announced in May that it would not air the 2022 ceremony, the HFPA released a statement that said it was working to reform itself with “extreme urgency” and offered a timeline for changes. In the months since, the HFPA has hired its first chief diversity officer, adopted new rules that prohibit members from accepting gifts from studios and added its first outside board members. In October, it added 21 new journalists to its ranks, 29% of whom it said identified as Black.</p>

<p>Celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo criticized the HFPA for its proposed changes, arguing they fell short, and a timeline they felt was too long. <p>Hollywood’s awards season kicked off with the <strong>Golden Globes 2021</strong> albeit a little dulled down amid the coronavirus pandemic as the first awards of the year were held virtually with most celebrities tuning in from their homes. While the awards were celebrated with an outpour of love and support by fans and fellow celebrities for the winners of the Golden Globes awards, however, many have slammed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for the lack of diversity in people who are a part of the voting members. There are zero Black voters among the HFPA members for this award and the Hollywood stars are not taking this lightly.</p>

<p>Currently, there are 87 journalists who vote for the Golden Globes and not one of them is Black. It can affect the trajectory of an individual’s career…it certainly has with mine,” Sterling said. “I’m presenting at the telecast this weekend to honor all the story tellers, especially those of color, who have achieved this extraordinary moment in their careers…AND I have my criticisms of the #HFPA.”</p>

<p>He continued, “87 people wield a tremendous amount of power. For any governing body of a current Hollywood award show to have such a lack of voting representation illustrates a level of irresponsibility that should not be ignored. With the power you have HFPA, you simultaneously hold a responsibility to ensure your constituency is fully reflective of the world in which we live. When you know better, you must do better. And having a multitude of Black presenters does not absolve you of your lack of diversity. This is your moment to do the right thing. It is my hope that you will.”</p>
