Soren is expected to take the oath as chief minister on November 28 at Morabadi Ground, Ranchi.

Earlier in the day, a meeting was held at the chief minister's residence on Kanke Road, attended by MLAs and leaders from the four alliance partners—the JMM, the Congress, the RJD, and the CPI-ML-L.

"INDIA bloc will contest the Jharkhand Assembly polls together. It has been decided that 70 seats in the state will be contested by the JMM and Congress. The rest of the seats will be discussed further," Soren said.&nbsp;

"We can't go into the details of the seat-sharing right now. Our alliance partner is not here right now. When they are here, we will finalise the number of seats and other details," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jharkhand minister and Congress leader Banna Gupta said that the INDIA alliance is doing its work smoothly and people will vote to continue the ruling coalition government in the state.

"Our in charge, (state) president, CLP leader together sat down with INDIA Alliance team. Everything has become very systematic. There is no 'if or but' anywhere. INDIA Alliance is doing its work smoothly. We say this very confidently that the people of Jharkhand will give a chance once again to the INDIA Alliance government led by Hemant Soren," Gupta&nbsp;said.

Hemant Soren has staked claim to form government in Jharkhand and will take oath as the CM on Thursday (Jul 4), after&nbsp;Champai Soren quit as the chief minister.

Hemant Soren&nbsp;had tendered his resignation from the post on January 31, ahead of his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.

He was granted bail by&nbsp;the Jharkhand High Court last week. The court ruled that&nbsp;there was reason to believe that he was "not guilty of the offence as alleged".

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader was again elected as legislature party leader on Wednesday (Jul 3).

"A decision was taken in the meeting to replace Champai Soren with Hemant Soren," news agency PTI quoted a party source as saying.

As per reports, not everything is well in the JMM camp as the outgoing CM Champai is feeling 'insulted' by the move.&nbsp;But Champai may be offered the post of&nbsp;JMM's executive president.

<h2>Assembly elections on the horizon</h2>

Assembly elections are slated to be held in Jharkhand in November/December this year and the JMM wants to fight elections with&nbsp;Hemant Soren as its face.&nbsp;

But a rift in the JMM camp can very well derail the party's election agenda.

Champai's unceremonious exit from the government has already provided the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state with ammo to go after the JMM.&nbsp;

Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP from Jharkhand's Godda, said in a social media post that the "Champai Soren era is over in Jharkhand".

"In the family-oriented party, people from outside the family have no political future. I wish the chief minister drew inspiration from Bhagwan Birsa Munda and stood up against the corrupt Hemant Soren ji," he said targeting the JMM leader.

Champai is a veteran leader of the party, having been around for decades now. He has also worked with JMM founder and Hemant Soren's father Shibu Soren. He has also served as a cabinet minister in &nbsp;the Hemant Soren government.

Soren’s lawyer, Arunabh Chowdhury has claimed that the court has found him not guilty of the offence.&nbsp;

Earlier on June 13, the high court had reserved its decision on Soren's bail plea.

"Bail has been granted to Hemant Soren. The court has found him not guilty of the offence and there is no likelihood of the petitioner committing an offence when on bail," Arunabh Chowdhury told PTI.

Hemant Soren is currently in the Birsa Munda jail in Ranchi. He is the executive president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

His lawyer, senior advocate Meenakshi Arora, argued that Soren was being wrongly targeted in a case she described&nbsp;as politically motivated and fabricated.

However, the ED had told the court that Soren misused his position and power to acquire 8.86 acres of land in the state capital.

ED counsel SV Raju claimed that witnesses had confirmed Hemant Soren's involvement in the illegal land deal.

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday (May 22) rubbished a bail plea filed by former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren while accusing the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha&nbsp;leader of misleading the court. The apex court said&nbsp;Soren's&nbsp;bail plea was already under consideration by the trial court, an&nbsp;important&nbsp;fact that Soren failed to mention in his petition.

Soren wanted relief to have the opportunity to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, just like jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had&nbsp;been granted.

Notably, the trial court had already taken&nbsp;cognisance of the complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate&nbsp;on April 4&nbsp;in connection with&nbsp;a land scam-related case.

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma told Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Soren:&nbsp;"We expected some candour from your client. He should have said that he had already applied for bail. That was not told to us in the course of arguments…You were pursuing parallel remedies…Why is it that in none of the petitions, despite being aware, you are not spelling it out that cognisance was taken on April 4, 2024…Your conduct leaves a lot to be desired…This is not the way you come before the court without disclosing material facts."

The court warned Sibal that it would write in its ruling that Soren had not approached the court with clean hands. However, Sibal then urged to withdraw the petition altogether, to which the court agreed.

Then, the court grilled Sibal for not mentioning&nbsp;important&nbsp;facts&nbsp;related to&nbsp;the case before the court.

"When did you get to know for the first time about the cognisance-taking order?”&nbsp;the court asked Sibal.

‘We expected some candour’: Indian Supreme Court rubbishes ex-CM Hemant Soren’s bail plea

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recovered a huge amount of cash, on Monday (May 6) after a series of raids across multiple locations in the Indian city of Ranchi, Jharkhand in connection with the case of the state’s rural development department’s head engineer, Virendra Ram.&nbsp;

The cash was recovered from the household help of Sanjiv Lal, personal secretary to Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam. According to reports, the officials have found Rs 25 crore (nearly $3 million) of unaccounted cash.&nbsp;

Ram was arrested by the federal agency in February 2023 in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the implementation of some schemes.

Dhiraj Prasad Sahu recently made headlines when officials from the Income Tax department uncovered around $42.29 million (around Rs 351 crore) in cash. The Congress distanced itself from the case and emphasised the money belonged to Sahu's liquor business firm and not the party, the report added. Soren pleaded before the court that he was a member of the assembly and had the right to participate in the floor test. He filed a petition for the same. According to a report by the news agency ANI, Soren, the chief of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) party, was arrested by the ED on Wednesday following&nbsp;summons in the case and several hours of questioning.

Soren was earlier sent to one-day custody by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in&nbsp;Ranchi, which&nbsp;has now extended his custody&nbsp;to five days. The ED had said that it recovered cash worth in excess of $43,418 (around Rs 36 lakh) from Soren's possession along with documents linked to the ongoing probe into the alleged acquisition of land by fraudulent means.&nbsp;

The ED added that land parcels spanning 8.5 acres were part of the criminal proceedings that Soren allegedly acquired. In a raid conducted in April last year, the agency unearthed several property-related records and registers that were in possession of Bhanu Pratap Prasad, a revenue sub-inspector.&nbsp;

The central agency further informed the probe revealed that Prasad and others were part of a very large syndicate involved in corrupt practices of acquiring properties forcefully as well as on the basis of false needs, reported news agency ANI.

<h2>Soren moves Supreme Court against arrest</h2>

Meanwhile, Hemant Soren, on Friday&nbsp;moved the Supreme Court against his arrest. But&nbsp;the top court refused to entertain his plea, challenging his arrest by ED in the case and asked&nbsp;him to approach the concerned high court with his petition.

A bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna, MM Sundresh and Bela M.Trivedi said they were not inclined to entertain the petition. The SC also said it was open for the petitioner to urge the high court to expeditiously decide the case.
