<p>On Saturday, India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that they will carry out a structural preliminary inspection at all the airports across the country.</p>

<p>Naidu&nbsp;said that a report from all the airports has been sought by the ministry within 2-5 days after which necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the days ahead.</p>

<h2><strong>Hattrick of airport canopy collapses</strong></h2>

<p>This is the third canopy collapse at an airport in the last two days.&nbsp;On Thursday (June 27), a part of a fabric canopy collapsed inside the premises of the Dumna airport, Jabalpur, amid heavy rains and crushed a car parked below. No one had suffered injuries in the incident.</p>

<p>"The fabric canopy was put up to beautify the 'drop and go' area. Water accumulated over it due to rain. It ripped under the weight of the water and the water fell with great force on a car parked there," said airport director Rajeev Ratna Pandey, while speaking to PTI.</p>

<p>However, the canopy collapse at the Delhi airport turned into a tragedy after it killed a taxi driver and left others injured. The incident also became a nightmare for the passengers whose flights were cancelled.</p>

After Delhi, Rajkot airport terminal's canopy collapses amid heavy rains

<p>One person was killed and six others were injured&nbsp;after a roof at Terminal-1 of New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport collapsed amid heavy rains on Friday (June 28) as India's national capital came to a standstill amid inundated roads and submerged cars, reported news agency ANI.</p>

<p>People were injured after the roof fell over some of the vehicles at the entrance of the terminal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the agency, Delhi Fire Services received a call regarding the roof collapse at around 5.30 am on Friday (June 28). Various cars were damaged and all injured people were rescued and admitted to the hospital.</p>

<p>DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) spokesperson said, "Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 am. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected. As a result of this incident, all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are closed as a safety measure. We sincerely regret this disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a passenger at&nbsp;Terminal 1 said, "I have a flight at 9 am. I came to know that the structure above (canopy) has collapsed here. Some flights have been cancelled. They (officials) are now asking us to go to Terminal 2."</p>

<p>The passengers were taken to Terminal 2 and 3 from Terminal 1 and the flights departing from Terminal 1 have been cancelled till 2 pm. Meanwhile, departing and arriving flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 remained fully operational.</p>

<p>In the wake of the incident, IndiGo flight&nbsp;released a statement. "IndiGo flight operations are impacted due to structural damage to Terminal 1, Delhi Airport because of adverse weather conditions. This has led to flight cancellations at Delhi as passengers are not able to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives.&nbsp;This unplanned situation has also led to operations across the network being impacted. Customers are advised to keep a track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport," it stated.</p>

<p>SpiceJet flights were also cancelled in the wake of the incident.</p>

<p>The airport later informed that flights at Terminal 1 Arrivals are also operating. But, the departing flights from Terminal 1 remain cancelled till 2 pm.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Minister Kinjarapu inspects site of roof collapse </strong></h2>

<p>Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu inspected the site of the roof collapse.</p>

<p>"A section of the canopy which is outside of the airport has collapsed due to heavy rains. We express our condolence to the life that has been lost in this tragic incident, four people have also been injured. So we are taking care of them right now. We immediately sent the emergency response team, the fire safety team and also the CISF, NDRF teams. Everyone was available at the site and they have done thorough inspection so that no other casualties are there. So right now the situation is under control," he said.</p>

<p>"The rest of the terminal building has been closed and everything is being thoroughly inspected so that there is no further untoward incident here ..."</p>

<p>"... we are taking this incident seriously...I want to clarify that the building inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi is on the other side and the building that collapsed here is an old building and was opened in 2009," the minister added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further announced a compensation of Rs 2 million (approx. $23959) for the deceased and Rs 3,00,000 (approx. $3593) for the injured. A probe into the incident has been ordered by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).</p>

<h2><strong>Heavy rains batter Delhi</strong></h2>

<p>For the second consecutive day, parts of the national capital received heavy rainfall.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Even though rains gave respite to the people from the scorching heat, it also led to waterlogging in various parts of the national capital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the visuals shared by news agency ANI on X, the roads appeared inundated and traffic jams were seen in parts of Delhi.&nbsp;Meanwhile, a car also got submerged at Minto Road.</p>

One killed, six injured as roof collapses at Terminal-1 of Delhi airport amid heavy rains

<p>Heavy rains lashed various parts of India's national capital as people got relief from intense heat and sultry weather.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to news agency ANI, Munirka, Sarita Vihar and other parts of Delhi received heavy downpours as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted more showers during the week.</p>

<p>"Light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speed of 30-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of few places of Delhi during the next two hours," stated the IMD, in a post on X at 7:30 AM.</p>

<p>According to the weather agency, rainfall was also predicted over Ghaziabad, Noida, and Gurugram.</p>

<p>As per local residents, a crocodile was sighted at Alapakkam, New Perungalathur, Chennai. Pictures doing the rounds indicate that the crocodile was lying by the road, in the vegetation adjoining a compound wall. Within a few hours, the police, local authorities and Forest Department personnel are said to have been alerted and they arrived at the spot. <p>Commenting on the earlier video of the crocodile crossing a road in Chennai, Supriya Sahu, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment Climate Change &amp; Forests, Government of Tamil Nadu, mentioned that there are few mugger crocodiles in several of the water bodies in Chennai. "These are shy and elusive animals and avoid human contact. This one has come out as the water has overflown due to massive rains under the impact of Cyclone Michaung. <p>According to Dr Balachandran, Head, Regional Meteorological Centre (under the Indian Meteorological Department), Chennai, the cyclonic storm lay around 100 kms East-northeast of Chennai and it is expected to move Northwest direction and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm around Monday (Dec 4) noon.</p>

<p>Some 13,000 people have been evacuated across the country, according to the Emergency Operations Center, and a majority of the nation's 32 provinces are under an alert designation.</p>

<p>Several local media reports citing officials have said that at least 27 people have been killed while dozens of others are missing. Meanwhile, rescue efforts were hampered by floods but continued on Monday after a landslide in the district of Mbankolo, northwest of Yaounde, on Sunday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by BBC citing a local radio station said that the death toll could be as high as 40 since many people are still missing and residents have been forced to pull bodies out of the debris with their bare hands due to the floods.</p>

<p>The poor neighbourhood of Mbankolo is said to be among the worst affected by the disaster. According to public broadcaster CRTV and a local official, torrential rainfall caused a dam containing a man-made lake situated on higher ground to burst.</p>

<p>“Yesterday we pulled out 15 people who had died and this morning we have found eight,” fire service official David Petatoa Poufong told reporters. He added, “We are still looking.” &nbsp;</p>

<p>Housing and Urban Development Minister Celestine Ketcha Court told BBC that the team of rescuers would “work all day long to continue finding people”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An AFP journalist reported that a couple of exhausted-looking local residents were seen holding corners of a large sheet carrying what one said were the bodies of two children.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios told Skai television that a man was missing from Volos, a port city on the Pagasetic Gulf after his car was swept away by the rainstorm. “His son came out (of the car) but the father was carried away and there is a search operation under way right now,” said Artopoios.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Multiple cars in Volos were seen being washed away by torrential rain onto muddy shores, reported Reuters, citing footage from the state broadcaster ERT. Officials have also restricted traffic in the wider area of Volos due to the floods.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The heavy rain-triggered floods were reported just days after deadly wildfires ravaged areas in northern Greece. The “megafire” blaze in Dalia has destroyed more than 81,000 hectares of the forested area, protected by the European agency Natura 2000, as of Monday (Sep 4).&nbsp;</p>

<p>“According to the latest information from our firefighters, the Dadia fire front is on its way to being completely under control,” said government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among those killed&nbsp;were two Dutch citizens in the mountains surrounding Kranj affected by the storms, reported Slovenian news agency STA. The third person was said to be an elderly Slovenian woman who&nbsp;died in the flooded town of Kamnik.<br />

<p>So far, around 16,000 households suffered power cuts and several villages were reported to be inaccessible. “Some areas are completely cut off and communication is also difficult,” said the country’s civil protection chief Srecko Sestan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as rescuers, on Friday struggled to reach flooded areas and issued a public call for rubber boats in parts of the county which had been cut off because of road closures and impassibility due to landslides.</p>

<p>In the town of Skofja Loka, vehicles and trucks were submerged or taken by torrents, as per Reuters, people were evacuated using helicopters. “We have not seen floods like these not just in 500 years, but in a 1,000 years,” Roman Kocilija, chief of the rescuers in the village of Most pri Komendi, told Slovenia’s N1 television.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The administration for civil protection and disaster relief recorded more than 1,000 weather-related incidents within 12 hours across the country, reported STA. Additionally, over 100 buildings including a sports hall were flooded in Skofja Loka where roads were also blocked.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The situation is serious,” Defence Minister Marjan Sarec told reporters, adding that the army had joined rescue and firefighter teams to help citizens in the most affected areas. He also urged people to stay at home and not drive anywhere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob returned to the country after&nbsp;cutting&nbsp;his vacation short and&nbsp;met&nbsp;with civil protection staff on Friday afternoon.</p>

<p>Similarly, in Austria roads to some villages in the southern state of Carinthia were blocked, reported the local authorities, on Friday while the district of Volkermarkt, bordering Slovenia particularly badly affected.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Residents in St. Paul in the Lavanttal Valley of Carinthia were also asked to stay on the upper floors and avoid basements and bridges. As of Friday morning, around 4,000 households were without electricity, as per the utility company Energie Steiermark.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Saturday, the Chinese weather agency issued a red alert – the highest warning – for torrential rain in Beijing, home to 22 million people. Since then, over 31,000 people have been evacuated, reported the country’s state media, on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Images and videos from Beijing show streets transformed into rivers overnight, affecting as many as 358 roads across the Chinese capital where cars were seen submerged while others were swept away in the floods.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Beijing’s western suburbs, Mentougou district, rescuers found two bodies in a river during an emergency patrol and reported that hundreds were pulled to safety.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This morning it was crazy, the water overflowed the Mentougou river and the whole avenue was flooded,” Guo Zhenyu, a 49-year-old resident, told AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The average rainfall in Beijing reached 176.9 mm between Saturday night and Monday afternoon with the maximum recorded rainfall in Mentougou hitting 580.9 mm, according to the state media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 4,000 construction sites were halted in Beijing, and almost 20,000 buildings were inspected for damage. Beijing residents had been asked not to go outside unless necessary, leaving the usually buzzing streets mostly deserted over the weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both airports in the Chinese capital cancelled more than 200 flights on Monday afternoon, with close to 600 delayed, said a report by Reuters citing data from flight tracking app Flight Master.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The heavy rains due to storm Doksuri, which was downgraded from a typhoon, also led to the issuance of alerts in Beijing’s neighbouring city of Tianjin as well as Hebei province. According to reports, three of the five rivers that make up the Hai River basin rose to dangerous levels on Monday.</p>

<p>Additionally, some houses washed away in the Yongding River while&nbsp;at least 55,000 people were evacuated from their homes in Baoding City, as per media reports. A driver was also reported missing after two trucks fell off a collapsed bridge in Baoding city, on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chen Hong, a resident of the southern Fengtai district, shared footage with AFP that showed a parked van half-submerged in fast-flowing muddy water on Monday morning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Once it starts raining the road turns into a drain, and there's water on the first floor inside houses,” Chen told the news agency. He also spoke about how since the houses are old they have raised concerns about safety.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Upcoming storm in China</strong></h2>

<p>Chinese forecasters also warned about the approach of another storm named <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-doksuri-downgraded-from-typhoon-beijing-residents-brace-for-heavy-rains-asked-to-stay-indoors-620805">‘Khanun’</a>, which is expected to rapidly gain strength and strike China’s densely populated coast&nbsp;next week. <h2><strong>Northern China braces for floods, torrential rains</strong></h2>

<p>Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from the potential flood areas while heavy rain also lashed Beijing where residents were urged to stay indoors. Officials have warned about floods, swelling rivers, mudslides and landslides, over the weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Chinese state media report, on Monday,&nbsp;more than 31,000 people in high-risk areas of Beijing have been evacuated.&nbsp;Over 20,500 were relocated from parts of the surrounding province, Hebei’s capital Shijiazhuang.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Beijing residents have been asked not to go outside unless necessary, leaving&nbsp;the usually buzzing streets&nbsp;mostly deserted, as per AFP. Furthermore, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, located near Tiananmen Square, cancelled opera and musical performances scheduled for Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The warnings have also prompted authorities in the Chinese capital to close several tourist spots, including the Forbidden City, libraries, museums and parks as well as suspend sporting events, according to media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hundreds of millions of people in Beijing and surrounding provinces remained under red alert – the highest level – for heavy rains, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/typhoon-doksuri-china-issues-red-alert-for-torrential-rain-in-beijing-thousands-evacuated-620620">issued</a> on Saturday. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“Authorities should closely monitor the weather, update forecasts for rainfall and water levels, and strengthen consultation, research and information transmission,” said China’s Ministry of Water Resources, on its social media WeChat account.</p>

<p>The ministry also lifted emergency warnings about the potential for floods to the second-highest level for Beijing, Tianjin and the surrounding Hebei province. However, it did warn that several rivers in the region were expected to flood, reported Reuters.</p>

<h2><strong>China issues warning for third typhoon in three weeks</strong></h2>

<p>Chinese forecasters also warned about the approach of another storm named ‘Khanun’, which is expected to rapidly gain strength and strike China’s densely populated coast, next week, reported Reuters. But while Doksuri got downgraded from a typhoon, the Chinese weather agency updated Khanun to typhoon from tropical storm status on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hong Kong Airlines, on Sunday, also cancelled two flights from Japan’s Okinawa on Monday due to Khanun. The upcoming typhoon is also expected to inflict further damage to corn and other crops that have already been hit by Doksuri, said the Chinese agriculture ministry.</p>

<p>The storms come as China has been facing multiple extreme weather events and recently recorded the highest temperature of 52.2 degree&nbsp;Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Doksuri was the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year and the second-strongest to hit the southeastern province of Fujian since 2016, where it affected as many as 880,000 people with more than 354,400 people evacuated and resettled.&nbsp;</p>

The ministry also lifted emergency warnings about the potential for floods to the second-highest level for Beijing, Tianjin and the surrounding Hebei province. However, it did warn that several rivers in the region were expected to flood, reported Reuters. China: Doksuri downgraded from typhoon, over 30,000 evacuated from Beijing

<h2><strong>Alert in Beijing and surrounding provinces</strong></h2>

<p>According to China’s national forecaster, a broad area that also includes the capital city of Beijing and surrounding provinces may witness a medium to high risk of rainstorm disasters in the next three days, while thunderstorms in the capital were forecast to peak on Saturday.</p>

<p>This is after Doksuri pummelled into southern Fujian province, on Friday morning, while its “influence” is now being felt in the country’s north, said China’s meteorological service, on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Doksuri’s intensity continues to weaken but the impact is far from over,” said the China Meteorological Administration. The warning asks the people to be vigilant and avoid high-risk areas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.</p>

<p>Over the weekend, the levels of rivers in southern Beijing, central and western areas of Hebei, eastern Shanxi and northern Henan, could also swell, said officials. Additionally, flash floods and geological hazards could occur around mountainous areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The red alert will go into effect from 8:00 pm (local time) and covers provinces that are home to several hundred million inhabitants including the Chinese city of Tianjin and provinces of Hebei and Shandong.</p>

<p>A report by AFP citing experts said that Saturday’s downpour could lead to worse flooding than the one in 2012 which led to the death of nearly 80 people and prompted the evacuations of tens of thousands.</p>

<h2><strong>Thousands evacuated in Beijing</strong></h2>

<p>The warnings have also prompted authorities in the Chinese capital to close several tourist spots and parks as well as suspend sporting events, reported Reuters. The report citing Beijing’s flood control department said that some 203,230 rescue personnel have been deployed and over 3,000 people have been evacuated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The heavy showers were reported in Beijing on Saturday afternoon and are expected to last through Tuesday, as per officials.</p>
