Sonu’s family indicated that he and Karam were among the seven Indians, along with youths of Punjab and Rajasthan, who underwent a 15-day training in August 2025.&nbsp;Sonu’s elder brother Vikas said, “I received a message from a Russian military official on September 19 that Sonu had died in a Ukrainian strike. Other youths who trained with him told us that a drone hit Sonu, while Karam was struck on the shoulder. Nayab Singh Saini will take the oath as the chief minister of Haryana, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in attendance, including his counterparts from other BJP-governed states.

This will mark Saini’s second term as Chief Minister, his first beginning in March after Manohar Lal Khattar stepped down to contest the Lok Sabha elections. His selection to lead the party in the state had come as a surprise, especially with both general and Assembly elections approaching.

After the elections, there was speculation about his future, with rumours circulating of a weak administration and the complexities of balancing caste dynamics. However, BJP insiders mentioned that Saini’s significant role in the party’s electoral success ensured him another term in office.

Saini was initially chosen for the position around 200 days before the elections, following Khattar’s resignation, which cleared the way for him to secure a Lok Sabha seat. The next important task for the BJP will be to finalise the Haryana Cabinet.

The Congress, despite being expected to win over 55 seats and surpass the majority threshold of 46, ended up with just 37 seats, an improvement of six from the 2014 results but still far below expectations.

Police in India’s Haryana state have arrested several Rohingya immigrants in connection with the communal flare-up witnessed over the past week.

Officials claimed that not only had the Rohingyas illegally occupied land owned by Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran in Tauru, but they were also found to be involved in stone pelting activities in the July 31 violence.

July 31 saw a major communal clash break out between two major communities in Haryana’s Nuh district, the only Muslim-dominated district of the state.

A religious procession being carried out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad came under attack by a violent mob, armed with stones.&nbsp;

Narender Bijarniya, Nuh superintendent of police (SP), was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying that the police had ample evidence which indicated the involvement of the Rohingyas in the July 31 violence.

“We have identified a list of them who were involved in the violence and we have evidence for it and based on it the teams have arrested them,” he said.

<h2>NGO comes to Rohingyas’ defence</h2>

An official from the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, claimed that most of the immigrants living in the refugee camp were “rickshaw pullers, ragpickers, and vegetable sellers,” adding that police raids were making them feel unsafe and harassed.

Communal violence in Nuh district of India’s northern state of Haryana has set alarm bells ringing in neighbouring states and areas including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, the National Capital Region (NCR) and Rajasthan. Clashes took place in Nuh district on Monday (July 31) followed by Gurugram on Tuesday. So far, at least five people have been killed.

Shops were set to fire in the Badshahpur area, which lies in NCR. Now, as the violence spreads, police in nearby states have pulled up their socks to avoid any untoward incidents in their areas.

<h2>Delhi on alert</h2>

In the Indian capital Delhi, police have increased patrolling, especially in those areas where mixed populations from both communities live. A senior police officer was quoted in the media as saying they were carefully monitoring developments in Haryana as it may have an impact on Delhi as well.

Police have also increased patrolling in some areas, where they are interacting with locals. They have erected barricades at border areas to better control and monitor the flow of traffic from nearby states.

<h2>Key meeting to be held in Manesar</h2>

In the wake of the violence in Haryana state, a key meeting or 'Mahapanchayat' has been convened for 11 AM Wednesday (August 2), where villagers and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, a right-wing nationalist group with links to the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), are demanding arms licenses of&nbsp;men from a religious community be cancelled.

<h2>Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on alert</h2>

Officials have suspended internet services in four Tehsils of Rajasthan state, namely Pahari, Kaman, Sikri and Nagar in the Mewat region of Bharatpur.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, police in Uttar Pradesh state have also intensified vigil and issued alerts in at least 11 districts of the western region.

Mathura, Aligarh, Agra and Gautam Buddh Nagar were some key areas where alert was issued.

ADG (Agra zone) Rajeev Krishna said that Mathura and Aligarh were sensitive due to the ongoing 84 Kosi Parikrama, the 297-km religious tour that also includes some areas of Haryana’s Mewat district.

“We are coordinating with Haryana police to ensure security has been intensified along the route,” he said.
