Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said the players must share a "big responsibility" for manager Ole Gunnar Solskajer's sacking following a dreadful run of results.

After a bright start to the season, following the arrival of signings such as Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, United have slumped alarmingly and have lost four of their last five league games, shipping 15 goals in the process.

"It hasn't been good enough, not delivering individually or collectively. It snowballed from one thing to another," Maguire said.

"We have to find something within ourselves to find that focus and mentality.

"The manager came in and spoke to us (yesterday), it was an emotional day. He was a legend, he`ll remain one."

Carrick, who worked with Solskjaer for three years, also said it had been an emotional farewell to the former striker but added his priority now was gaining the win against Villarreal that could all but seal United`s place in the last 16.

Giving little away about the club`s plans to replace Solskjaer, former midfielder Carrick said he would give his best whether it is one game, two games or a stretch longer in charge.

"It's not the time to look back now, I know what I could have done in my own mind better," he said.

The Yorkshireman said he did not know when he was named in that squad when he would be ready to return to action but is pleased with the way he has coped.

"It's not like being thrown into a friendly match, it's the European Championship, so it's so demanding and the intensity of each game," he said.

"So where it has gone and where it has been, I think that is a great credit to the medical staff at Manchester United and England for the way they went about everything, the way they pushed me every day and obviously I am really proud of myself in terms of the way that I pushed myself as well."

The Manchester United captain was slapped with a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult after his arrest in Mykonos island.

However, Maguire said that plain-clothed police officer didn’t identify themselves and pulled his group over to a minibus and hit him in his legs while adding he regrets putting fans and Manchester United through this.

"They hit me a lot on the legs. I was in that much of a panic. Fear. Scared for my life," Maguire told BBC. 
The central defender said his "conscience is clear".

"I don't wish it on anybody. Obviously the situation has made it difficult for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I regret putting the fans and the club through this, but I did nothing wrong," he added.

"A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied. On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire's legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date."

The sentence is suspended for three years.

According to media reports the nightclub fight started over claims his sister Daisy was injected with what the defence claimed was a suspected drug.

Maguire was arrested along with his brother and a friend after being driven from the club to a police station, where there was an altercation with the prosecution claiming Maguire offered money to be released.

The 27-year-old defender, who has 26 England caps, spent two nights in police custody before flying home at the weekend.

Earlier in the day the England boss explained he had stood by him after speaking to Maguire, the world's most expensive defender following his £80 million ($105 million) move from Leicester to United last year.

"It is clearly a decision that is not straightforward," Southgate told a press conference.
