Israel's army said rockets were launched Thursday from Gaza, the first such military action since three days of cross-border fighting in August.

The incident prompted Hamas's internal security services to detain two people "directly related to the firing of four rockets", said a security source who requested anonymity.

"The Palestinian factions have nothing to do with these rockets, which are aimed at giving the occupation (Israel) an excuse for continuing the aggression," the source told AFP.

The rocket fire was not claimed by any of the armed factions operating in Gaza, which has been ruled by the militant group Hamas since 2007.

It came hours after veteran Israeli hawk Benjamin Netanyahu was declared the winner of November 1 elections, and after an Islamic Jihad fighter was killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian factions signed a reconciliation deal in Algiers on Thursday, vowing to hold elections by next October in their latest attempt to end a rift that has now lasted more than 15 years.

The deal was signed by a leading figure from the&nbsp;Fatah&nbsp;party of President Mahmud Abbas and by the chief of Islamist movement&nbsp;Hamas, which rules Gaza.

But Abbas himself, president of the Palestinian Authority since 2005, was not present.

"We are optimistic that it will be implemented and will not remain ink on paper."

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said, "It is a day of joy in Palestine and Algeria and for those who love the Palestinian cause, but a day of sadness for the Zionist entity (Israel)."

Fatah and Hamas have been at odds since elections in 2006, which were won by Hamas but never recognised by the international community.

The following year, the Islamist movement seized control of the Gaza Strip beginning years of division, with Fatah administering Palestinian-run areas of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The first elections since the division were set to take place last year, but were cancelled by Abbas.

Algerian President&nbsp;Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who mediated Thursday's deal, noted in a speech at the signing ceremony in the Algerian capital's Palace of Nations that Yasser Arafat had used the same building to announce the independence of the State of Palestine in 1988.

The deal was signed with pomp and ceremony in the presence of foreign ambassadors and a military band that played the Palestinian and Algerian national anthems.

Fatah and Hamas have signed several similar deals in the past but none has led to elections actually taking place.

Yet Thursday's agreement is something of a diplomatic coup for Algeria, weeks before it is set to host an Arab League summit.

According to the statement, the second was criticised for providing Israel with information in 2001 "that resulted in the targeting and death of residents" by Israeli soldiers.

The announcement claimed that the three other people who were executed on Sunday had all been found guilty of murder.

Hamas executes five Palestinians of Gaza, accusing them of murder, supporting Israel

An Israeli court on Tuesday sentenced the former Gaza head of a major US-based aid agency to 12 years in prison for funnelling millions of dollars to Islamist group Hamas.

The Beersheba district court in southern Israel issued a sentence of "12 years' prison time, less the detention" already served for World Vision's Mohammed al-Halabi, who has been jailed throughout the past six years of court proceedings.

The sentencing comes after the court issued a ruling in June that Halabi was guilty of siphoning off millions of dollars and tonnes of steel to Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave.

Halabi, who was arrested in June 2016 and indicted in August of that year, has consistently denied any irregularities.

His lawyer reiterated his claim of innocence following Tuesday's sentencing.

"He says that he's innocent, he did nothing, and there is no evidence," Maher Hanna said. "On the contrary, he proved in the court above any reasonable doubt that he made sure that no money would be (given) directly to Hamas."

According to Hanna, if Halabi had admitted to wrongdoings, he would have been released.

"But he insisted that truth also has value. And for his personal values and for the international humanitarian work values, he insisted on the truth, and he cannot admit a thing that he did not do," the lawyer said.

Secret evidence

Hanna said they would appeal the verdict to the supreme court.

The Israeli prosecution said it was also considering an appeal.

"These are very severe deeds, the defendant funded terror with millions of shekels, helped strengthen the Hamas tunnel network," Moran Guez of the southern district attorney's office.

"We asked for 16-21 years prison. We'll read the sentencing and consider our actions," she told reporters.

Halabi had been convicted of membership in a terrorist group -- Hamas -- and of financing terrorist activities, of having "transmitted information to the enemy" as well as the possession of a weapon.

Much of the evidence against him was kept secret, with Israel citing "security concerns", prompting his legal team to question the verdict's legitimacy.

In its sentencing, the court said Halabi had joined the military wing of Hamas in 2004, and was "planted in World Vision" the following year.

The court said that besides 12 tonnes of steel and other materials provided to Hamas for their tunnels and positions, he also gave the Islamist rules of the territory "millions of dollars" of World Vision's money "to fund terror".

The 12-year sentence was also meant to deter Gazans working in international aid groups from aiding Hamas, according to the court.

"There are huge amounts of money that if they reach terror organisations, will contribute to strengthening the terror regime in Gaza," the sentencing said.

'Deeply disappointing'

World Vision, a US-based Christian charity with almost 40,000 employees globally, said the sentencing was "deeply disappointing".

Its spokesperson Sharon Marshall stressed her objection to "any form of terrorism or activities that support terrorism," saying they "don't see any evidence of those things in this case."

"We fully support Mohammed's intent to appeal the verdict and the sentence in this case, and we call for a fair and transparent process at the supreme court," she said in a statement.

"We remain committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children in the region and hope we'll be able to advance our humanitarian work in the context of our longstanding cooperation with the relevant authorities in Palestine and Israel," Marshall said.

Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, called the 12-year sentence a "profound miscarriage of justice," with the six-year trial and use of secret evidence constituting a "mockery of due process".

"He should long ago have been released," Shakir said in a statement.

Following Halabi's arrest, the Australian government, a major donor to World Vision, announced it was freezing funding to projects in the Gaza Strip.

A subsequent Australian government probe found no evidence of embezzlement.&nbsp;

The Beersheba district court in southern Israel issued a sentence of "12 years' prison time, less the detention" already served for World Vision's Mohammed al-Halabi, who has been jailed throughout the past six years of court proceedings. The sentencing comes after the court issued a ruling in June that Halabi was guilty of siphoning off millions of dollars and tonnes of steel to Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave. Halabi, who was arrested in June 2016 and indicted in August of that year, has consistently denied any irregularities. His lawyer reiterated his claim of innocence following Tuesday's sentencing. "He says that he's innocent, he did nothing, and there is no evidence," Maher Hanna said. "On the contrary, he proved in the court above any reasonable doubt that he made sure that no money would be (given) directly to Hamas." According to Hanna, if Halabi had admitted to wrongdoings, he would have been released. "But he insisted that truth also has value. And for his personal values and for the international humanitarian work values, he insisted on the truth, and he cannot admit a thing that he did not do," the lawyer said. Secret evidence Hanna said they would appeal the verdict to the supreme court. The Israeli prosecution said it was also considering an appeal. "These are very severe deeds, the defendant funded terror with millions of shekels, helped strengthen the Hamas tunnel network," Moran Guez of the southern district attorney's office. "We asked for 16-21 years prison. We'll read the sentencing and consider our actions," she told reporters. Halabi had been convicted of membership in a terrorist group -- Hamas -- and of financing terrorist activities, of having "transmitted information to the enemy" as well as the possession of a weapon. Much of the evidence against him was kept secret, with Israel citing "security concerns", prompting his legal team to question the verdict's legitimacy. In its sentencing, the court said Halabi had joined the military wing of Hamas in 2004, and was "planted in World Vision" the following year. The court said that besides 12 tonnes of steel and other materials provided to Hamas for their tunnels and positions, he also gave the Islamist rules of the territory "millions of dollars" of World Vision's money "to fund terror". The 12-year sentence was also meant to deter Gazans working in international aid groups from aiding Hamas, according to the court. "There are huge amounts of money that if they reach terror organisations, will contribute to strengthening the terror regime in Gaza," the sentencing said. 'Deeply disappointing' World Vision, a US-based Christian charity with almost 40,000 employees globally, said the sentencing was "deeply disappointing". Its spokesperson Sharon Marshall stressed her objection to "any form of terrorism or activities that support terrorism," saying they "don't see any evidence of those things in this case." "We fully support Mohammed's intent to appeal the verdict and the sentence in this case, and we call for a fair and transparent process at the supreme court," she said in a statement. "We remain committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children in the region and hope we'll be able to advance our humanitarian work in the context of our longstanding cooperation with the relevant authorities in Palestine and Israel," Marshall said. Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, called the 12-year sentence a "profound miscarriage of justice," with the six-year trial and use of secret evidence constituting a "mockery of due process". "He should long ago have been released," Shakir said in a statement. Following Halabi's arrest, the Australian government, a major donor to World Vision, announced it was freezing funding to projects in the Gaza Strip. A subsequent Australian government probe found no evidence of embezzlement.

Israel re-opens Gaza crossings after declaring truce with Palestine

Israel and Gaza's militants continued to exchange missile attacks for the second consecutive day on Saturday after Israeli airstrikes killed at least 31&nbsp;people, including the leader of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, and injured 265 others.

The second round of flare-up claimed at least eight&nbsp;lives, including six children, near Jabalya refugee camp,&nbsp;the Palestinian authorities said on Sunday,&nbsp;while pinning the blame on Israeli forces for the deaths.

The Israeli military, however, denied that it was responsible, saying the explosion was caused by a failed Islamic Jihad rocket launch, about a third of which have failed to clear the boundaries of the enclave, reports Washington Post.

“We have concrete data that it was their rocket,” Israel Defence Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lt. Col. Richard Hecht was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, there were no significant injuries reported from the rocket fire targeting Israel, according to officials, as thousands of residents of southern and central Israel have been sheltered in safe rooms or community air raid bunkers.

There seems to be no sign of exhaustion as Israel continued to pound Gaza Strip, and the militants retaliating to the air strikes since Saturday. While the Israeli military says it is targeting weapons depots hidden in residential areas and destroying a number of houses, Islamic Jihad has been firing rockets on Israel's commercial hub Tel Aviv.

According to the Israeli military, militants fired more than 449 rockets toward Israel in retaliation overnight and through Saturday.

The Israel military said that its Iron Dome air-defence network has intercepted about 95 percent of the rockets, with 81 of the launches falling short and landing in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Egypt has been engaging in intensive talks to mitigate the situation, Reuters reported. On Saturday, an Egyptian intelligence delegation headed by Major General Ahmed Abdelkhaliq arrived in Israel and later would be travelling to Gaza for talks.

The delegation was hoping to broker a day's ceasefire in order to carry out the talks, the sources told Reuters.

At least 10 people, including a top commander of a Palestinian militant group, were killed and scores wounded in the Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said the missiles were fired on Saturday in response to a threat following the arrest of another senior militant in the West Bank earlier this week.

According to Gaza health ministry, the missiles hit residential apartments as well as militant watchtowers, killing at least 10 people, including a 5-year-old girl, and wounding 55, The New York Times reported.

Taysir al-Jabari, Islamic Jihad’s commander for northern Gaza, was among those killed, the militant group said. He helmed the organisation after another militant was killed in an airstrike in 2019.

Later, Palestinian militants launched a barrage of rockets in central and southern Israel, bringing both sides on the verge of an all-out war. The Islamic Jihad militants claimed to have fired 100 rockets.

At least hundreds assembled in a funeral procession for the militant and for those who were killed. Many mourners were also seen waving Palestinian flags and Islamic Jihad banners while calling for revenge.

The Israeli Army released footage showing a fighter jet striking rocket launchers belonging to the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, according to the description of the army.

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid in a late night address on Friday said that his country had launched the attacks based on concrete threats.

“This government has a zero-tolerance policy for any attempted attacks of any kind from Gaza towards Israeli territory. Israel will not sit idly by when there are those who are trying to harm its civilians,” Lapid said.

The airstrikes come amid a week of rising tensions between Israel and Islamic Jihad, which often acts independently of Hamas—the group that governs Gaza Strip.

Friday’s escalation follows one of the least violent phases gripping Gaza for several years. After the war in May 2021, there were relatively few cross-border exchanges of fire, as tensions shifted to the West Bank.

Both Israel and Hamas had vowed to avoid another full-scale war over the enclave, which has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since 2007.

Tensions have been escalating between the two countries following the arrest of a Palestinian militant leader Bassam al-Saadi a few days ago in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.

Israeli authorities deployed thousands of troops as Israeli nationalists visited Al-Aqsa as reports claimed Palestinians threw stones at the Israeli police force.

Last year, violence had led Hamas to fire rockets from Gaza Strip leading to a war with Israel. Hamas again warned that marchers should not pass through the Al-Aqsa mosque even as Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said the march will move "along the regular route".

"Waving the Israeli flag in the capital of Israel is perfectly acceptable," Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, adding,"I ask the participants to celebrate in a responsible and dignified manner."

Clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police had taken place at the Al-Aqsa compound last month.&nbsp;

Violence erupts at Al Aqsa mosque; Jerusalem on high alert ahead of Israeli flag march

At least 3 people have died and several were injured in a suspected terror attack in Israel’s Elad city on Thursday when the country was celebrating its Independence Day.

According to the Times of Israel, at least one of the injured is said to be in a critical condition, and it is estimated that more than nine are hurt in the incident.

Local reports say that the attack was carried out by two men, one wielding an axe and another a gun. The assault took place in two different locations.

The attack occurred in the evening hours when many were spending their time with families outdoors to celebrate the country’s 74th anniversary.

The eyewitnesses said that the two suspects fled in a vehicle following which the police launched a manhunt to nab them.

Several checkpoints were dispatched along the city’s main roads while police searched by helicopter for a vehicle that was seen fleeing the scene.

The Elad Municipality has asked residents to shelter in a place.

According to i24 news channel, Hamas, a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist militant group, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement, the group said that it welcomes "the heroes who carried out the action that comes in the wake of Palestinian anger over the ongoing aggression of the occupation and its institutions and settlers against al-Aqsa."&nbsp;

The attack in Elad comes as tensions have been high in Israel after a wave of&nbsp;deadly attacks&nbsp;has killed close to 20 Israelis.

Terrorist attack rocks Israel city on Independence Day, 3 killed, many hurt: Report

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett met Islamist Ra'am Party's leader Mansour Abbas for the first time since the coalition government was effectively suspended.

Channel 13 News reported that the meeting was held to smooth out differences so that the Islamist Party ends its boycott of the coalition.

According to the Shin Bet intelligence agency, a Palestinian gunman had killed an Israeli guard at the entrance of a settlement in the occupied West Bank.

The attack came after a Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli forces in the northern West Bank village of Azzun as per the health ministry of Palestine.

The recent upsurge of violence between Israel and Palestine has triggered concerns that they may slide back to a wider conflict.

Palestinians hurled stones at the Israeli riot police in the alleyways of Jerusalem's Old City.&nbsp;

Hamas claims control over the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.&nbsp;

During his Easter address, Pope Francis said, "May Israelis, Palestinians and all who dwell in the Holy City, together with the pilgrims, experience the beauty of peace, dwell in fraternity and enjoy free access to the Holy Places in mutual respect for the rights of each."

“All efforts made to maintain the comprehensive calm and prevent the escalation of violence that threatens security and peace,” said Jordan, which serves as custodian of the holy site.

Israel and Hamas had fought over Jerusalem for 11 days last year in May. Over 250 people Palestinians and 13 Israelis had been killed in the intense conflict that took place in the Gaza Strip.

Israel had captured the Old City, located in East Jerusalem, in 1967. But Palestinians want to make it the capital of a future state.

Over eight hours after he carried out the attack, the 28-year-old Palestinian assailant Raad Fathi Zidan Hazzam, who was from Jenin was shot dead near a mosque in Jaffa.

In response, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said, ''Everyone who helped him indirectly or directly will pay a price.''

Zaki Heller, the spokesperson of the Magen David Adom emergency service said, "Sixteen people evacuated to hospitals, two dead, four seriously wounded."&nbsp;

Meanwhile, police spokesman Eli Levy said on Channel 13 television, "Don’t leave your homes. Don’t stick your heads out of the window. Stay off your balconies."

Mark Malfiev, who is being treated at the Ichilov hospital after getting injured, said I saw the window shatter, people suddenly started running, and I felt getting hit in the back."

"I felt a lot of blood. I saw blood," he added.

Condemning the terrorist attack, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said "Washington continues to be in regular contact with our Israeli partners, with whom we stand resolutely in the face of senseless terrorism and violence."

The police added that $3 million worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen three years ago in India's capital city. The police have been trailing the case since 2019 after a businessman in the capital's Paschim Vihar area complained that cryptocurrencies from his wallet were being fraudulently transferred.

Delhi Police said investigations revealed the "cryptocurrency trail" led to the wallets of the Palestinian Al-Qassam Brigade.&nbsp;

The police said although most bitcoins were being used for terror financing it was also allegedly being used to access child pornography.
