Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Carbon, a new AI model built to tackle difficult coding tasks and help cybersecurity teams find and fix software weaknesses. Announced on October 28, 2026, it follows Gemini 4 Argon by just two weeks, signalling Google’s push to develop more capable AI systems. The company says Carbon ranks first on the latest version of the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, with a score of 59. It also reports leading results across several cybersecurity benchmarks. However, the model is not yet available to everyone: Google plans to begin with a limited group of cyber defenders before expanding access.
Gemini 4 Carbon: What Can It Do?
Gemini 4 Carbon is designed for long, complicated tasks that may require an AI system to work through several steps, rather than simply answer a question. Google says the model can help identify subtle bugs across large codebases, trace their causes and develop fixes. It is also designed to support full-stack web development and scientific work. The cybersecurity focus is particularly significant. Software flaws can expose organisations to attacks, and finding them early can help developers strengthen their systems before vulnerabilities are exploited.
Google Shares Three Key Cybersecurity Scores
Google reported the following results for Gemini 4 Carbon:- 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro: identifying software vulnerabilities.- 54.8% on ExploitGym: assessing whether vulnerabilities can be exploited.- 71.0% on CWE-bench: developing fixes for security weaknesses. These tests cover different stages of cybersecurity work, from discovering flaws to assessing risk and patching the underlying problem. Google says the results demonstrate Carbon’s capabilities across the cybersecurity defence process. The company also reported internal improvements in secure code generation compared with Argon. These are Google’s published results; benchmark scores alone do not guarantee that an AI model will find every vulnerability or produce a correct fix in real-world systems.
Gemini 4 Carbon vs GPT-6 Astra: What About Availability?
The supplied comparison says Gemini 4 Carbon outperformed OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 on selected coding and cybersecurity tests. Those comparisons should be treated cautiously unless the specific benchmark results and testing conditions can be independently confirmed. For now, Google is taking a controlled approach to release. A limited group of cybersecurity defenders is due to receive access first, followed by additional trusted partners through its Fairwind Program. Wider access for developers, businesses and consumers is planned for a later stage. The practical impact will depend on how reliably Carbon works outside benchmark tests. If it can help security teams find and repair flaws faster, it could become a useful tool for software development and cyber defence. But its performance in everyday use will matter more than any single leaderboard position.

Google has launched Gemini 4 Carbon, an AI model focused on complex coding and cybersecurity. Google reports an 88.2% score on SEC-bench Pro for finding vulnerabilities. Access will initially be limited to trusted cyber defenders before a wider rollout.

Google is taking its health tracking ambitions a step further with Health Guardian, a new set of features designed to spot subtle changes in the body that may not be obvious day to day. The tools are coming to the Google Health app for eligible Pixel Watch and Fitbit devices. Google says they can work quietly in the background around the clock, analysing physiological data and highlighting important changes over time. The idea is different from simply checking today's heart rate or number of steps. Health Guardian is designed to look for longer-term patterns and present them in monthly summaries, with notifications when a feature detects something that may need attention.
What can Google Health Guardian track?
Google is introducing four Health Guardian features. Insulin resistance trends analyse multi-week physiological data to track changes in metabolic health without requiring a blood sample, according to Google. Blood pressure trends use pulse and movement patterns collected over time to estimate changes without requiring a traditional blood-pressure cuff. There is also sleep breathing quality, which looks at breathing patterns during sleep and shows how much of the night was spent with optimal breathing. The fourth feature is breathing emergency detection. It is designed to detect a critical drop in blood oxygen and, if the person becomes unresponsive, can automatically contact emergency services and emergency contacts. Google says this feature is limited to Pixel Watch and select European countries.
AI is doing the heavy lifting
Google says its health models were trained using sensor data from millions of opted-in users. Its insulin-resistance model was trained on more than one trillion minutes of data from 5 million opted-in users, while its blood-pressure model was trained using billions of minutes of heart and movement data. Google says the features have also undergone clinical validation using established measurement methods. The company says research supporting the insulin-resistance technology has been published in Nature.
But Google says this is not a medical diagnosis
There is an important limitation. Google says Health Guardian features are intended for general wellness and information, not for diagnosing or treating medical conditions. The company specifically says insulin-resistance and blood-pressure trends should not be treated as real-time clinical readings or used to change medication or treatment plans. Users should consult healthcare professionals about medical concerns. The features are coming soon, with availability depending on the device and region. Google Health Coach can also help users understand the information, although it requires a Google Health Premium subscription or an eligible Google AI Pro or Ultra plan.

Google's new Health Guardian features will use Pixel Watch and Fitbit data to track subtle changes in insulin resistance, blood pressure and sleep breathing. The tools provide longer-term health insights, but Google says they are for wellness and are not medical diagnostic tools.

Google has set a retirement date for Google Assistant on Android. Starting September 4, the company will begin shutting down its long-running voice assistant and replacing it with Gemini, its generative AI-powered assistant. The transition will happen gradually over several weeks, but for most Android users, Google Assistant will soon disappear from their phones. The move marks Google's biggest shift in voice AI since Assistant first launched in 2016 and reflects the company's wider strategy of putting Gemini at the centre of its ecosystem.
Gemini is replacing Assistant everywhere
Google had previously announced plans to retire Assistant, but delayed the move while adding more features to Gemini. Now, Google says Gemini is ready to take over. Besides Android phones, the transition will also affect Wear OS smartwatches, Android Auto, compatible headphones and other connected devices that rely on Assistant through smartphones. Many Google smart home products have already moved to Gemini. However, Assistant will continue working on some platforms, including Android TVs, Google TV devices and vehicles with Google built-in, until Google announces separate migration dates.
What changes for Android users?
For users already using Gemini, very little will change. Those still relying on Assistant will automatically move to Gemini over the coming weeks. The experience, however, will be different. Unlike Assistant, which relied on predefined voice commands, Gemini uses large language models to understand natural conversations and perform more complex tasks. Google says Gemini can summarise documents, answer detailed questions, generate content and interact with multiple Google services. At the same time, some users may notice that Gemini occasionally responds differently from Assistant because it uses AI reasoning instead of fixed command-based actions.
Why Google is making the switch
The move is part of Google's broader AI strategy as competition intensifies with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Copilot, Anthropic's Claude and Meta AI. Rather than maintaining two assistants, Google is consolidating its AI efforts around Gemini, which now powers Search, Workspace, Android and other Google products. Users with older Android phones that do not meet Gemini's hardware requirements, or those living in unsupported regions, may temporarily continue using Assistant. For everyone else, Gemini will soon become the only built-in voice assistant on Android.

Google has confirmed that Assistant will begin shutting down on Android phones from September 4. Gemini will replace it as the default AI assistant across phones, smartwatches, Android Auto and other devices as Google accelerates its AI-first strategy.

Google is entering a new phase in the artificial intelligence race after two of its most influential AI leaders changed roles within days of each other. Jeff Dean, one of Google's earliest employees and the architect behind many of its core technologies, is leaving the company after 27 years. At the same time, Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become Alphabet's Chief Scientist. The changes come as Google faces mounting pressure from rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic in the race to build the next generation of AI systems.

Tomorrow will be my last day at Google after 27 years, and watching it grow from 25 people to 190,000+ has been an amazing journey. Below is a note I shared with many people internally at Google today. An excerpt is: It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you and to help… pic.twitter.com/o3aRNLkssA— Jeff Dean (@JeffDean) August 5, 2026

Jeff Dean starts a new AI company
Dean joined Google in 1999 when the company had only around 25 employees. During his career, he helped build technologies including MapReduce, Bigtable and Google Brain, and later played a major role in Gemini and Google's AI research. Announcing his departure on X, Dean said it had been "an amazing journey" watching Google grow into a company serving billions of users worldwide. He is now launching Discovery Loop, a startup focused on building AI systems that can automate scientific and engineering research. The company is co-founded by Google veterans Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, with backing from Khosla Ventures. Google will remain an investor and cloud infrastructure partner. According to WIRED, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai attempted to persuade the team to stay, but the founders ultimately chose the flexibility of building an independent company.
Hassabis moves to a broader research role
While Dean is leaving Google, Demis Hassabis is staying within Alphabet but giving up his operational responsibilities. He has been appointed Alphabet's Chief Scientist and Chair of Google DeepMind, while former DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over as CEO and report directly to Sundar Pichai. The move allows Hassabis to focus on long-term AI research, scientific discovery and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI), rather than overseeing day-to-day product development. The twin announcements mark one of the biggest leadership reshuffles in Google's AI history. Dean's departure is particularly significant because Discovery Loop brings together four of Google's best-known AI researchers. Their goal is to develop AI systems capable of generating scientific hypotheses, running experiments and accelerating breakthroughs in biology, materials science, chip design and drug discovery. For Google, the challenge is now clear: continue competing with OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI leaders while replacing decades of engineering experience and accelerating Gemini's development. How successfully the company navigates this transition could shape the next chapter of the global AI race.

Google's AI leadership has undergone a major shake-up. Jeff Dean is leaving after 27 years to launch Discovery Loop with top Google researchers, while Demis Hassabis is stepping down as DeepMind CEO to become Alphabet's Chief Scientist amid growing AI competition.

Google is taking another major step towards building more capable humanoid robots. The company has unveiled Gemini Robotics 2, a new artificial intelligence model that acts as a high-level brain for robots. Instead of simply following pre-programmed instructions, robots powered by the new system can understand spoken commands, reason about their surroundings and perform complex physical tasks while adapting to changing environments. The launch highlights Google's growing ambition to bring Gemini beyond smartphones and computers into the physical world, where AI-powered robots could eventually work in warehouses, factories, hospitals and even homes.

One brain. For any robot. 🤖 We’re launching Gemini Robotics 2: our next-generation physical AI bringing full body intelligence to humanoids, advanced dexterity, multi-robot teamwork and more. pic.twitter.com/1rFw3NUytb— Google DeepMind (@GoogleDeepMind) July 30, 2026

A smarter brain for humanoid robots
Traditional robots are excellent at repeating the same task but often fail when something unexpected happens. Google says Gemini Robotics 2 is designed to solve that problem by giving robots the ability to understand context, plan actions and adjust their behaviour in real time. Rather than programming every movement individually, developers can teach robots to reason through tasks much like humans do.One of the biggest upgrades is full-body control. Unlike the previous generation, which mainly controlled a robot's upper body, Gemini Robotics 2 allows humanoids to walk, crouch, balance, bend and use both hands simultaneously. Google also says the model improves dexterity, enabling five-finger robotic hands to perform delicate actions such as tying knots, sealing zip-lock bags and handling small objects, while also supporting industrial grippers for warehouse work.
Gemini Robotics ER 2 plans the work
Alongside the main model, Google introduced Gemini Robotics ER 2, which functions like a project manager for robots. Instead of controlling motors directly, ER 2 understands spoken instructions, breaks large jobs into smaller steps, monitors progress and replans tasks if something changes. Google says this enables robots to complete long workflows involving hundreds of decisions and even coordinate with other robots. The company also launched Gemini Robotics On-Device 2, allowing robots to run AI locally without relying on cloud connectivity. Developers can reportedly customise the model for new robotic platforms in just a few hours using fewer than 200 training examples.
Safety remains a priority
Google says safety has been built into every layer of the platform. The company introduced a new benchmark called ASIMOV-Agentic to evaluate whether robots can refuse unsafe instructions, recognise when human intervention is required and avoid dangerous situations. Robots can also detect nearby people, pause automatically and resume work only when it is safe. As competition in humanoid robotics accelerates with companies including Tesla, Figure AI, Agility Robotics and Unitree all developing increasingly capable machines Google is betting that the future will depend not just on better hardware, but on smarter AI that allows robots to think, adapt and collaborate in the real world.

Google has discontinued Google Play services for devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow, bumping the minimum required version up to Android 7.0 Nougat. Devices stuck on the older OS won't stop working immediately. Still, they may gradually lose the ability to download new apps or get Play Store updates through as developers phase out support for older Android versions. The change impacts phones that cannot be updated past Android 6.0, an operating system which came in 2015. Google has updated the minimum Play Services requirement now set at Android 7.0 (API level 24), effectively closing the book on Marshmallow support after years of backing it. Functioning as a background service, Google Play Services underpins a range of core Android features, from signing into Google accounts and receiving push notifications to location tracking, Maps functionality, security verification, and data syncing. It also gives developers the APIs needed to integrate Google-powered capabilities into their apps. Meanwhile, Google Play Services is different from the Google Play Store. Several Android apps depend on it to install, update and function properly. After the end of Play Services support, developers are likely to slowly drop compatibility with Android 6.0 devices, resulting in users eventually discovering certain apps that can no longer be downloaded from the Play Store; however, others might stop receiving updates or fail to work correctly. Also read: 'Nvidia is digging its own grave': DeepSeek CEO backs China's AI chip push
Will your phone stop working?
Not entirely. As the artificial intelligence race intensifies, most technology companies are focused on building larger and more powerful AI models. Google, however, is increasingly highlighting a different advantage lower costs. The company is promoting its Gemini 3.5 Flash model as a more affordable option for businesses that want AI capabilities without the high costs associated with some of the industry's most advanced systems. The move comes as organisations around the world face growing AI bills driven by rising usage and increasing demand for computing power.
Why is Google focusing on AI costs?
According to a report by Business Insider, Google believes many companies are spending far more than expected on artificial intelligence services. Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently said that businesses are rapidly consuming their annual AI budgets as usage expands across departments and workflows. He argued that organisations do not always need the most powerful AI model for every task and can significantly reduce costs by using a combination of models based on specific needs.Pichai said that if major Google Cloud customers shifted around 80 per cent of their AI workloads to a mix of Gemini 3.5 Flash and other AI models, they could collectively save more than $1 billion annually. The comments reflect a growing conversation within the technology industry about the long-term economics of artificial intelligence.
What is Gemini 3.5 Flash?
Gemini 3.5 Flash is Google's lower-cost AI model designed for speed and efficiency. While it may not offer all the capabilities of the company's most advanced frontier models, it is built to handle many everyday AI tasks at a lower operating cost. Businesses often use AI for customer support, content generation, document analysis, coding assistance and internal workflows. For many of these tasks, companies may not require the most expensive model available.Google's strategy is based on the idea that businesses can reserve premium AI models for highly complex work while using more efficient systems such as Gemini Flash for routine operations. Industry analysts say this approach is similar to how cloud computing evolved, where companies balance performance and cost depending on the workload.
Why AI costs are becoming a major concern
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence has increased demand for expensive computing infrastructure. Running advanced AI systems requires large data centres, specialised chips, electricity and networking resources. As companies deploy AI across more departments, costs can quickly rise. Several technology firms have recently acknowledged the challenge. Microsoft has spoken about the growing expense of AI infrastructure, while Amazon has reportedly reviewed internal AI usage practices as adoption accelerated across teams. Many organisations are now looking beyond AI performance alone and focusing on return on investment, efficiency and cost management.
Google's infrastructure advantage
One reason Google believes it can compete effectively on AI pricing is its control over much of the technology stack.Unlike some competitors, Google owns and operates:Its own AI modelsLarge-scale cloud infrastructureData centresCustom AI chipsGlobal networking systemsThis level of integration allows the company to optimise costs across multiple layers of its AI business. Analysts say this could become an important advantage as businesses increasingly compare not only model performance but also overall operating expenses.
A new phase in the AI race
For much of the past two years, AI companies have competed primarily on model capability. The focus was often on benchmarks, reasoning ability, coding performance and multimodal features. However, industry experts believe the next stage of competition could be centred on efficiency. As AI adoption grows, companies may increasingly ask questions such as:How much does the model cost to run? Can it deliver acceptable results at lower prices? What is the return on investment? How can businesses control rising AI spending? Google appears to be positioning Gemini 3.5 Flash around these concerns. The artificial intelligence market is entering a phase where performance alone may not determine success. While companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google continue building increasingly capable models, businesses are paying closer attention to the financial impact of AI adoption.Google's latest strategy suggests that affordability and efficiency could become just as important as raw computing power. As AI usage continues to expand across industries, the companies that help customers balance performance and cost may gain an advantage in the next stage of the global AI race.

Google DeepMind has said its artificial intelligence system AlphaProof Nexus has solved several long-standing mathematical problems, including some that remained unsolved for more than 50 years. The development has drawn attention across the AI community, especially as debates grow around whether such breakthroughs signal progress towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).According to researchers, the system solved nine open problems related to mathematician Paul Erdős, along with 44 open conjectures and a 15-year-old problem in algebraic geometry, showing how AI is increasingly being used in advanced scientific research.
How Google’s AI solved complex maths problems
The system, called AlphaProof Nexus, works by combining AI reasoning with a formal verification tool known as Lean. Instead of just generating answers, the AI produces step-by-step proofs, which are then checked automatically by the system. This approach helps ensure that:Every logical step is verified Incorrect assumptions are rejected The final proof meets strict mathematical standardsResearchers said the cost of solving each problem was only a few hundred dollars in computing power, highlighting how efficient such systems can be.
Why ‘hallucinations’ remain a concern
One of the key challenges in AI-generated mathematics is the issue of hallucinations, where systems produce results that appear correct but contain hidden errors.Experts explain that AI models may:Invent new statements that are not proven Skip difficult parts of a problem Present incomplete proofs as finishedTo address this, Google’s system uses Lean to verify every step, reducing the risk of such errors and making the results more reliable.
How this compares with other AI developments
The announcement comes shortly after OpenAI said one of its models solved a well-known mathematical problem. However, OpenAI relied on external experts to verify the result, while DeepMind used automated verification. This difference highlights two approaches in the AI industry:Human-reviewed proofs Machine-verified proofs Researchers believe combining both methods may improve future results.
Does this mean AI is reaching AGI?
Despite the progress, Demis Hassabis has said that current AI systems are still far from achieving AGI. He explained that solving specific problems does not mean AI can match human intelligence across all areas. True AGI would require: Creativity across different fields Independent reasoning Ability to generate original ideas According to Hassabis, today’s systems are powerful tools but do not yet show the level of understanding seen in human experts.
What this means for research and industry
The development shows how AI is becoming a useful assistant in scientific research. Instead of replacing mathematicians, these systems can help:Explore complex problems faster Check proofs more efficiently Support researchers in difficult areasExperts say this could change how mathematics and science are conducted in the future. The global race to dominate artificial intelligence is intensifying, with the United States and China competing across technology, business and geopolitics. Now, Elon Musk has offered a striking view on how this race may unfold. In a post on X, Musk said China could emerge as the leader in artificial intelligence on Earth, while his own company SpaceX may lead in space.

What exactly did Elon Musk said?
Musk made the comment while replying to a discussion involving Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus AI, who had criticised Google’s progress in artificial intelligence.Responding to the debate, Musk wrote:“Google will win the AI race in the West, China on Earth and SpaceX in space.”While the comment appeared partly informal, it reflects broader trends in how different regions are approaching AI development. Why Musk believes China could leadChina and the United States are taking different paths in artificial intelligence.US-based companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google are investing heavily in large language models, cloud services and enterprise AI tools. Many of these systems are paid or restricted to specific users. In contrast, Chinese companies are focusing on wider accessibility. Firms such as Alibaba and startups like DeepSeek have released open-source or low-cost AI models. This approach allows developers and smaller businesses to use and modify AI tools more easily. Some analysts believe this could lead to faster adoption at scale, even if US models remain stronger in certain benchmarks.
The idea of different winners in AI
Musk’s comment suggests that the AI race may not have a single winner. Instead, different regions and companies could lead in different areas: China: broader AI adoption and deployment United States: advanced research and enterprise systems Space sector: emerging AI applications beyond Earth. He also hinted that the Western AI race could still be led by companies like Google. This reflects a more fragmented view of the AI ecosystem, where leadership depends on use cases rather than one global leader.
SpaceX and the next frontier of AI
Musk also pointed to space as a new arena for artificial intelligence. He has previously spoken about plans to combine xAI with SpaceX to build orbital AI data centres. Reports suggest such projects could be valued at around $1.25 trillion. These space-based systems would:Use solar energy for computingReduce energy costs compared to Earth-based data centresSupport satellite networks and deep-space missionsIf implemented, this could allow AI systems to operate beyond Earth, supporting autonomous spacecraft and future exploration missions.
What this means for the global AI race
The AI race is no longer limited to technology companies. It now involves governments, infrastructure, energy and global influence.China’s focus on accessibility and scale may help it expand AI usage quickly. Meanwhile, US firms continue to lead in advanced research and high-performance models. Musk’s remarks highlight a key idea: AI leadership may be divided across regions and industries rather than dominated by a single country. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, the competition between nations and companies is expected to shape not only technology, but also economic and strategic power in the years ahead.

Gemini AI side panel comes to Chrome
Google says Gemini AI will soon appear in a dedicated side panel inside Chrome on macOS, Windows and Chromebooks. This will allow users to ask questions, summarise web pages, check emails or manage calendars while staying on the same page. The side panel will be powered by Gemini 3 and can pull information from across the web. Users can ask it to explain articles, organise information or help with daily tasks such as planning schedules. According to Google’s Chrome team, this feature is meant to act like an assistant that works quietly alongside regular browsing.
Connected Apps and personalised browsing
Gemini in Chrome will also support Google’s Connected Apps system. This allows the AI to work with services like Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps and YouTube, if users choose to enable it. For example, Gemini could read an email about an event, check calendar availability and suggest travel options.Google is also introducing an optional feature called Personal Intelligence. This allows Gemini to remember context from earlier conversations to give more relevant answers over time. The company says this feature will be turned off by default and users will need to opt in.Another tool, called Nano Banana, will let users edit or transform images directly in the browser using AI, without downloading or uploading files elsewhere.
Chrome auto-browse
One of the most notable additions is Chrome auto-browse, an agentic AI feature that can perform actions for users. Google says this tool will be able to research topics, fill forms, post on social media, manage subscriptions and collect service quotes, such as from plumbers or electricians.Auto-browse will also support online shopping. Using Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, Gemini AI will be able to search products and complete purchases on behalf of users. Google, Microsoft and Anthropic have launched new artificial intelligence tools for teachers this week, signalling a growing race among tech giants to shape how AI is used in classrooms. The announcements come at a time when many educators remain cautious about the impact of AI on learning. These companies unveiled separate initiatives aimed at teachers, students and schools, promising better access to AI tools, training and support. However, a new survey suggests that concerns around student dependence, critical thinking and data privacy remain strong among faculty members.
Anthropic partners with Teach For All
Anthropic announced a partnership with non-profit organisation Teach For All to bring AI tools and training to more than 100,000 educators across 63 countries, reaching over 1.5 million students. The initiative, called the AI Literacy & Creator Collective, will give teachers access to Anthropic’s AI assistant, Claude.Unlike many other AI programmes, Anthropic said teachers will help shape how the technology develops. Educators will act as “co-architects”, offering feedback on how AI should be designed and used in classrooms.According to Wendy Kopp, CEO of Teach For All, teachers must play a central role if AI is to make education more fair and effective. She said educators should guide how AI tools are built, rather than simply adapting to them.

Google and Microsoft expand education AI
Google introduced its biggest education-focused AI push so far at the Bett UK 2026 conference. The company announced free SAT practice exams through its Gemini assistant, with content reviewed by The Princeton Review. Google also announced that Khan Academy’s Writing Coach will now run on Gemini, offering writing feedback to students from Classes 5 to 12. In addition, Google said Gemini will be available across its Workspace for Education tools, including Gmail, Docs, Slides and Sheets, at no extra cost to schools. Meanwhile, Microsoft launched its Elevate for Educators programme. The initiative offers free professional training, AI-focused certifications developed with ISTE+ASCD, and access to educator networks in more than 13 languages. Microsoft said the programme supports its goal of helping 20 million people gain AI skills over the next two years.
Teachers remain cautious about AI
Despite the push from tech companies, many educators remain uneasy. A survey of 1,057 faculty members, released by the American Association of Colleges and Universities and Elon University, found that 95 percent believe AI will increase student overreliance on technology. Around 90 percent said it could weaken critical thinking skills. The survey also showed that 68 percent of faculty feel their institutions have not prepared them properly to use AI in teaching, while nearly one in four said they do not use AI tools at all. Eddie Watson, vice president for digital innovation at AAC&U, said the findings show higher education is at a turning point, with strong warnings from faculty that AI may harm learning if not used carefully.
Privacy and data concerns
Privacy experts have also raised concerns as AI adoption in schools accelerates. While companies must follow student data protection laws such as FERPA in the United States, enforcement has often been weak. Some experts warn that student data protections may fade after graduation, while others suggest companies may be focused on building long-term user loyalty.Tam Winc, CEO of Secur, said that while many AI firms want to improve education, schools and parents must prioritise student safety and well-being as competition for classroom adoption increases. The growing interest in AI-powered education is also creating opportunities for specialised platforms that focus on the day-to-day needs of schools. Alongside global technology companies, India-based Neev Learn is among the platforms integrating AI into school management to support teachers, administrators, students and parents. By combining school management software with AI-powered features, the platform aims to streamline routine administrative tasks, improve communication and help educators spend more time on teaching than paperwork. As schools continue to evaluate how AI can be used responsibly, such purpose-built platforms reflect a broader shift towards practical AI applications that complement teaching rather than replace it.

Google has started testing a new artificial intelligence feature called Personal Intelligence, which allows its Gemini chatbot to pull information from apps like Gmail and Google Photos to give more personalised answers. They announced the update in a blog post on Wednesday, as it continues to strengthen Gemini’s reasoning abilities.According to Google, the feature helps Gemini understand context across a user’s data instead of relying on single prompts. This means the chatbot can connect details from emails, photos and other Google apps to respond more accurately to questions.

Google’s Personal Intelligence
Google said Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to “reason across your data” to surface useful insights. For example, Gemini can connect an email conversation to a video you watched earlier or find specific moments stored in your photo library without being told where to search.Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs and the Gemini app, said the chatbot can now understand context more naturally. According to him, Gemini does not need users to manually point it to Gmail or Photos to retrieve information. This feature builds on Gemini’s earlier ability to access Google apps but takes it further by allowing deeper reasoning across different sources at the same time.
Who can use the feature and where it is available
Google said Personal Intelligence is currently available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. The feature is limited to personal accounts and is turned off by default, meaning users must enable it manually. The company also said the feature will be added to Google Search’s AI Mode in the future. For now, it remains part of the Gemini app as a beta release.
Privacy, limits and known issues
They said that it does not train its AI models directly on users’ Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries. It only uses limited information such as user prompts and Gemini’s responses to improve how the feature works over time.Woodward also warned that Gemini may struggle with timing and nuance, especially in personal situations such as relationship changes or shifting interests. For sensitive topics like health, They said Gemini avoids making assumptions and will only discuss such information if users ask directly. They also acknowledged that while the tool aims to be helpful, it is not yet perfect and should not be treated as error-free.
Why Google is pushing personalised AI
The launch of Personal Intelligence comes as Google faces strong competition from companies like OpenAI in the generative AI space. By making Gemini more personalised and context-aware, Google is trying to keep users within its ecosystem of apps and services.According to Google, the goal is to make AI assistants more useful in everyday life by helping users find information faster, without searching through emails or photos manually.

Google says AI can help make cancer more manageable and save lives
AI role in early detection and treatment Google says artificial intelligence (AI) is already helping in the fight against cancer and could play an even larger role in the future. From early detection to improving diagnosis, patient care, and research, AI is becoming a key tool in healthcare. The remarks came from Google executive Ruth Porat, who has survived cancer twice. She addressed medical professionals and highlighted how AI can support diagnosis, speed up treatment, and ease administrative tasks. Porat said that, much like electricity and the internet, AI is a “general purpose technology” that can bring wide economic and social benefits. She further added that AI has the potential to transform cancer care by helping doctors detect illness earlier and spend more time with patients.
Accelerating research with AI
One of the biggest examples is AlphaFold, an AI system developed by Google’s DeepMind that can predict the structure of proteins. This tool has already been used by over 2.5 million scientists in 190 countries and is helping speed up cancer research by identifying how diseases behave and how drugs can target them. Porat also mentioned how AI is being used to analyse high-resolution pathology slides and medical scans. Google’s models can spot small cancer cells missed during reviews, giving pathologists more accurate tools to work with. This approach combines the strength of human knowledge and machine precision.
Improving delivery and supporting clinicians
Google is working with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) on an AI-powered guidelines assistant. This tool helps doctors find reliable, structured information quickly, reducing the time spent reading lengthy medical papers. Porat said doctors lose up to 28 hours per week to paperwork. AI tools can now summarise exam notes, suggest treatments, help schedule appointments, and even support clinical trials. Some systems are already reducing time spent on discharge summaries by up to 40 per cent. She added that AI can also help defend hospitals against cybersecurity threats, as healthcare systems are frequent targets of data breaches.

Many believe that smartphones have changed the world more than any other invention in the human history, however, in recent months, major tech leaders have started outlining a future that leaves the smartphone behind. Tech giants like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Bill Gates are each backing technologies that aim to replace smartphones with more integrated, ambient forms of computing in near future.
Musk and Neuralink
Elon Musk’s company Neuralink has been developing brain-computer interfaces that allows users to use devices through thought-driven control. After an eight-year hiatus, Google News has returned to Spain on Wednesday. The parent company of Google, Alphabet, had shut the service earlier due to a Spanish rule where news aggregators were told to pay publishers for using the snippets of their news. Spain transposed European Union’s copyright rules, which were revamped in 2020, into legislation last year. This development allowed the media outlets to negotiate directly with the tech giant Google.

As this was more profitable for the firm, it seems to have prompted an announcement last year that Google News would re-open in the nation in a year.

In a blogpost, Fuencisla Clemares, Google's vice president for Iberia, said, "Today, on the global 20th anniversary of Google News, and after an almost eight-year hiatus, Google News is returning to Spain."

American multinational technology company Google, which is facing a new Big Tech antitrust bill, has been under increasing pressure after a three-judge panel of the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals revived a part of Florida's social media law to disclose the standards they use to moderate content on its platform.

The unanimous decision was authored by Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom, who was appointed by Republican former President Donald Trump.

"The First Amendment protects platforms and their right to moderate content as they see fit - and the government can't force them to host content they don't want," NetChoice Vice President Carl Szabo said in a statement.

With growing pile of antitrust woes, how long can Google own internet?

As per the Google spokesperson, the company will not change an employee’s salary based on them going from office work to being fully remote in the city where the office is located.

Work-from-home has been the new normal in pandemic times. Some of us may like WFH and some of us won't. All is fine till everyone is treated fairly in corporate decisions. But how would you feel if your boss, who staunchly opposed WFH initially packed bags and moved to another country in order to work from home?

This has reportedly happened in Google. CNET reported that Urs Holzle, Senior Vice President for technical infrastructure is moving to New Zealand to work remotely.

Holzle told staff on June 29 that he will be moving to New Zealand. As per the report in CNET, Holzle had initially opposed WFH for staff who did not have a certain level of seniority in the organisation.

"After three decades in the US, my wife and I both felt it was time to consider a new location," Hölzle wrote in a company memo reviewed by CNET. "We've decided to spend a year in New Zealand and see how we like it."

The charge is reportedly denied by Google. A spokesperson has been quoted by Business Insider as saying that Holzle did not oppose WFH for junior employees.

However, Holzle's move to work remotely from a different country altogether may not go down well just when Google is planning to gradually have employees work from office.

Google on Thursday announced plans of opening its first-ever physical retail store. The store is set to open in New York this year. The store will open in Chelsea neighbourhood this summer. Google has a large regional office here with many of its 11,000 New York employees.

"At the Google Store, customers will be able to browse and buy an extensive selection of products made by Google, ranging from Pixel phones to Nest products, Fitbit devices to Pixelbooks and more," said Google vice president Jason Rosenthal.

"Or they can shop online at GoogleStore.com and pick up their orders in store. Throughout the store, visitors will be able to experience how our products and services work together in a variety of immersive ways, which we're excited to share more about when the doors open."

The move has come amid Google's efforts to take on Apple with hardware product ranging from smartphones to thermostats and follows its acquisition of wearables maker Fitbit.

"The new Google Store is an important next step in our hardware journey of providing the most helpful experience of Google, wherever and whenever people need it," Rosenthal said in a blog post.

While Apple has integrated its physical stores into its marketing strategy, Microsoft last year announced it was permanently closing its retail locations except for a handful that would be used as "experience centers."

TAE Technologies, a California-based firm building technology to generate power from nuclear fusion, said on Thursday it had raised $280 million from new and existing investors, including Google and New Enterprise Associates.

The company, which did not disclose its latest valuation, was valued at $2.6 billion after raising funds in May 2019, according to data platform PitchBook. Including the latest funding, TAE has raised $880 million till date.

The fresh capital will mostly be deployed to commercialize TAE`s power management technology, which is used for electrical grid applications and faster charging of electric vehicles, the company said.

Founded in 1998 and formerly known as Tri Alpha Energy, TAE Technologies kept a low profile for years and operated in stealth mode. Over the years, it has drawn the interest of investors including Venrock, brokerage Charles Schwab and the Kuwait Investment Authority.

The company is also working on producing baseload power from the Hydrogen-Boron fuel cycle, which is an environment-friendly fuel source. Baseload power refers to the minimum amount of power that needs to be supplied to an electrical grid at any given point in time.

Prior to the latest funding round, TAE had raised about $130 million earlier this year.
