In a unique incident, eight care home workers in Germany were accidentally infected with five doses of coronavirus vaccine, local authorities reported on Monday.

The incident occurred with seven women and one man who were all aged between 38 and 54. The eight infected people are employees of a care home in the town of Stralsund in northeastern Germany.

As of now, the eight affected locals have not shown any serious ill effects but are under careful observation of the local health experts.

The eight were put in a priority group due to the nature of their profession — meaning they were chosen to be the first ones to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, which has recently been approved by the regulatory board of the European Union. However, on Sunday when the EU, and Germany, began vaccinating locals, the eight employees were injected with five doses of the vaccine at once, reported Stefan Kerth, the administrator of the district where the facility is located.

as soon as the error was reported, four of the eight were admitted to a nearby hospital after they showed mild flu-like symptoms. The remaining four were sent home as they did not show any symptoms or report any ill health.

"I deeply regret this incident," Kerth said. "I hope all those affected suffer no serious side effects." He also added that this incident was an isolated one and was solely a result of human error.

The authorities are hoping the eight will recover soon without any symptoms. The hope was supported by the authorities of Pfizer-BioNTech who claimed they had injected extra doses during clinical trials and had not observed any serious ill effects.

As per the initial instructions, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is supposed to be administered in two injections and is being delivered in vials that each contain five doses once diluted.

Two swans strayed onto a high-speed railway line in Germany. One of the swans got caught in an overhead power cable and died. What happened next was pure love,

The other swan, upon losing its partner, settled on the railway track beside the cold body of its partner, mournings its huge loss.

Officials tried luring the mourning bird away but it would not leave the body of its companion. It sat there for almost an hour till fire-fighters lifted it.

A pilot has vowed to spread awareness about the novel coronavirus and thank the efforts of the frontline workers who have been working round the clock to help the world battle COVID-19 pandemic.

Samy Kramer, a trained pilot, took to the skies to form the shape of a syringe to celebrate the first day of European Union's vaccination drive for the masses.

Kramer said he hoped his aerial stunt will be "a fun and unconventional way to raise awareness" about the coronavirus and vaccines being made available to the masses in several European countries from today.

By performing this stunt, he became one of the four pilots who have summarized 2020 — the pandemic year — in four of such routes. The other pilots drew a 'thumbs up' with the medical plus sign, a 'stay at home' warning' and 'NHS' in the skies.

United Kingdom's new mutant coronavirus strain continues to spread across the world, Germany has become the latest nation to detect this variant that was first reported in the United Kingdom.

Germany reports first Case of U.K. Covid Variant

Germany`s U.N. envoy, during his last scheduled U.N. Security Council meeting, appealed to China to free two detained Canadians for Christmas, prompting China`s deputy U.N. envoy to respond: "Out of the bottom of my heart: Good riddance."

Germany finishes a two-year term on the 15-member council at the end of this month and Ambassador Christoph Heusgen plans to retire after more than 40 years as a diplomat.

"Let me end my tenure on the Security Council by appealing to my Chinese colleagues to ask Beijing for the release of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Christmas is the right moment for such a gesture," Heusgen told the council session, whose official agenda topic was Iran.

Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat who was working as an adviser for the International Crisis Group think tank, and businessman Spavor were detained by Beijing in 2018 shortly after Canadian police picked up Huawei Technologies Co Ltd Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant.

China`s deputy U.N. ambassador, Geng Shuang, accused Heusgen of abusing the Security Council to launch "malicious" attacks on other members "in an attempt to poison the working atmosphere".

"I wish to say something out of the bottom of my heart: Good riddance, Ambassador Heusgen," Geng said. "I am hoping that the council in your absence in the year 2021 will be in a better position to fulfil the responsibilities...for maintaining international peace and security."

Heusgen also used the Security Council meeting to advise Russia`s deputy U.N. ambassador, Dmitry Polyanskiy, to read certain articles about Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who said he had tricked a Russian secret agent into disclosing details of a botched plot to kill him. Russia`s FSB security service dismissed the recording as a fake.

Polyanskiy replied: "It seems he`s developed a certain dependency on the council, there`s never a meeting without criticism of Russia even if that`s not suitable for the subject matter. I hope that after Jan. 1 that Christoph`s symptoms will improve."

A German court on Friday ruled in favour of Elon Musk’s Tesla to partially clear forested land to build a manufacturing site near Berlin.

Earlier, environmentalists had criticised the company’s plans to clear the forest, claiming that the move could endanger hibernating reptiles in the area.

Activists had gone to court in the eastern city of Frankfurt an der Oder to prevent the company from clearing the land.

When the case was being studied by a regional court, the razing plans remained at halt. The Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court on Friday said that it would ban the razing of forested area by Tesla in the regions of the site, giving a nod to activists

In a first, Tesla factory workers based in California will be counted as 'essential workers' and will be exempted from new coronavirus restrictions in the state.

The decision has been taken as the state is inching towards new coronavirus restrictions, which will be initiated from this weekend. The authorities let the Tesla workers be exempted as earlier Elon Musk had argued that manufacturing is listed as an essential workforce.

"The limited stay-at-home order does not apply to employees deemed essential workers — manufacturing is listed as an essential workforce," said California's Department of Public Health, specifying in particular transport products and equipment.

The exemption has been granted on the condition that Musk's factories will ensure all necessary health guidelines and will make sure the employees are provided all the basic precautions and facilities needed to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Germany: Daily COVID cases exceed the 30K mark for first time

Germany will begin coronavirus vaccinations on December 27 with elderly care home residents, Health Minister Jens Spahn announced Wednesday, with the European Union aiming for all 27 member states to begin on the same day.

In a statement, Germany's 16 state-level health ministers said Spahn had announced "the expected approval and supply of the BioNTech vaccine" with distribution beginning shortly before year's end.

As Germany holds the EU's rotating presidency, that could mean December 27 will be the start date for all member countries.

Also, Wednesday French Prime Minister Jean Castex said that France could begin vaccinations "in the last week of December" if "all conditions are met".

European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said that all the bloc's countries could begin on the same day once the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is approved.

The Commission will make the final call on authorisation once the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has issued its final verdict -- now expected on December 21 after the timetable was moved up a week.

But several days could pass between the EMA ruling and the Commission's green light, as Brussels must first consult with member states.

Castex said that between now and February, France will take delivery of some 3.5 million doses, enough to cover around 1.7 million people, and will also prioritise the elderly, the vulnerable and carers.

Covid vaccines are administered in two doses over several weeks.

Pfizer-BioNTech's jab has already been approved in several western countries, with Britain and the US administering the first inoculations in recent days.

Some other states around the world have also waved it through, including Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

Various European countries are struggling to control the second wave of the novel coronavirus, and Germany, too, has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases. The local authorities have claimed a massive increase in coronavirus patients in the second wave.

German hospitals are struggling to pay attention and accommodate the incoming COVID-19 patients, many of whom are brought in critical condition and need to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Hospitals have seen a nearly 40 per cent increase in COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care.

This increase is almost five times more than what was seen during the first wave of coronavirus in Germany during the spring season.

“In states like Saxony, the number of patients in intensive care is five times higher than it was in April. Hospitals are either reaching their capacity limits or have already exceeded them,” Gerald Gass, the head of the German Hospital Federation (DKG), an umbrella group uniting regional hospital associations, told a local newspaper.

In addition to an increase in the ICU patients, on an average, nearly 16,000 patients are being treated for the deadly virus in the normal wards of the German hospitals. The increase has raised concerns for the local authorities who fear the bigger hospitals will soon run out of space to accommodate critically ill patients.

During the first wave in the European country, the smaller hospitals were attending to the infected cases but were transferring the critically ill patients to the bigger hospitals with more resources. however, with an increase in the cases and ICU patients, the transferring process is getting tougher for the hospitals to manage, raising serious concerns. The hospitals are now, usually, packed to the highest occupancy limit.

Some hospitals have also claimed to have a full-bed attendance in their ICU wards for almost a week now. The experts are also raising concern over lack of qualified nurses and hospital staff, and have complained on behalf of the existing staff who are tired after being "stretched thin for years".

Uwe Janssens, the head of the German Association of Intensive and Emergency Medicine (DIVI) told a local agency that the experts and authorities are unsure of how will the hospitals be able to manage the inflow of COVID-19 patients if the situation remains as grim in the few upcoming weeks too.

As of now, the German government has imposed a new and stricter partial lockdown which will stay in place at least till January 10, as the country crossed the mark of 1.7 million COVID-19 cases this week.
