Residents of a community in central Germany received the biggest (in terms of price) gift of their lives. They unexpectedly inherited property and a stock portfolio worth €6.2 million ($7.5 million).

This property belonged to an elderly neighbour.

Renate Wedel had lived in Hesse, central Germany, with her husband, Alfred Wedel, since 1975. Alfred died in 2014, and Renate died in December 2019 at the age of 81.

Renate had bequeathed a bank balance, shares and valuables, and her sister, who was her original heir, had already died.

The municipality also inherited a property in Weiperfelden, which was initially left as a legacy, but was declined by the initial inheritor because of the cost of maintaining the house and outbuildings and because residents' contributions were due for work on a local road.

The community is obliged to use the inheritance, valued at €6.2 million, for "community facilities and infrastructure."

Laws in Denmark are specific still. It has a law for children living in 'Ghetto neighbourhoods'. Ghetto neighbourhoods are enclaves with a large population of Muslim citizens. Children from these neighbourhoods must spend at least 25 hours apart from their parents every week. In these 25 hours, these kids are taught 'Danish values'. They are taught about Christmas and Easter traditions.

Denmark is a secular country. But the government mandates Muslim children to learn about Christmas and Easter. They also take Danish language classes.

How does the govt explain this? It says it is westernising these children. And immersing them in the secular culture of country. This is a constitutionally mandated intervention. The government says it's not an interference in religious affairs. It's something they must do to tackle the rising threat of Islamism.

This is part of a global pattern.

Let's see what European Union charter of fundamental rights says about freedom of religion.

"Freedom to manifest one's religion or beliefs shall be subject only to such limitations as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society in the interests of public safety, for the protection of public order, health or morals, or for the protection of the rights and freedoms of others."

So there is freedom of religion but with reasonable restrictions. Leaders in Europe and all over the world are well within their rights to make laws to protect their countries.

In some cases, even sweeping powers may be justified. In India, the previous UPA government introduced two laws after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.

The first set up a National Investigation Agency.

The second strengthened existing anti-terror laws to allow suspects to be detained without bail for up to six months on the orders of a judge.

The current n.D.A govt introduced the UAPA or the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

It has special provisions to deal with terrorist activities. Both laws have been slammed as draconian. But neither is unique in the global context.

Several German soldiers have been suspected of organising a chat group relating to anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism and pornography.

According to Reuters, many of the 26 soldiers belong to a logistics unit in Neustadt am Ruebenberge in northern Germany, the defence ministry said in a report to parliament dated Friday and first reported by public ARD television.

Civilian and military prosecutors launched a probe immediately after the accusations became known in October.

Three of the soldiers have so far been banned from wearing a uniform and working for the military, the document said, without elaborating.

In a similar case in June, Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer disbanded a company of the army's elite KSK special forces after recurring incidents involving far-right extremism.

A car crashed into a gate outside German Chancellor Angela Merkel's office. The driver couldn't get past the barrier and was detained. He is being questioned but the motive remains unclear. There are no report of casualties.

At the moment, the Berlin Police are not suspecting that this was an extremist attack.

However, there were some words scrawled on the sides of the car and these words have been a matter of concern for security agencies. The messages are 'stop globalisation politics' and 'you damn killer of children and old people'. The pictures of these slogans are going viral on the internet.

Europe’s largest economy partly recovered from an unprecedented plunge caused by the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring, German Economy Grows 8.5 % In Third Quarter.

Germany's Stronger than expected rebound

As expectations grow that the first Covid-19 jabs will be administered in a matter of weeks, German glassmaker Schott is quietly doing what it has been for months: churning out vials that will hold the vaccine.

The 130-year-old company, whose founder Otto Schott invented the high-quality borosilicate glass favoured by the pharma industry, has been working round the clock to meet unprecedented demand.

Already it has delivered millions of the little bottles to vaccine makers involved in Covid-19 trials, who have already started filling them so they can be shipped out the minute regulators give the okay.

While non-disclosure agreements prevent Schott from detailing its customer list, head of communications Christina Rettig said they include "the ones you hear about in the media".

In fact, Schott is supplying vials for three-quarters of the more than 100 coronavirus vaccine trials worldwide.

Closest to the finish line are US firm Moderna and a joint effort by US giant Pfizer and Germany's BioNTech -- which coincidentally has its headquarters in the same western German city of Mainz as Schott.

Large-scale data has shown both vaccines to be around 95 percent effective and US and European authorities have signalled that inoculations could start in mid-December.

With the world on the brink of a mass immunisation effort to end the pandemic, Schott and its competitors say they are ready to rise to the challenge.

The company issued a statement in July with Germany's Gerresheimer and Italy's Stevanato Group, fellow leaders in pharmaceutical packaging, to say they were coordinating closely with pharma customers and could ensure sufficient supply.

Schott alone aims to produce enough vials to store two billion doses of a coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2021, Rettig told AFP at the company's offices in Mainz.

- Ramping up -

In a lucky break, the industry was already seeing rising demand from China and other countries for top-level Type 1 borosilicate glass products, meaning Schott and other major players were building up capacity well before the pandemic struck.

Schott launched a $1.0-billion (840-million-euro) investment programme in 2019 to expand its pharmaceutical business. By the time the Covid-19 vial requests started pouring in, new manufacturing equipment was already up and running.

"That puts us in a very good position to ramp up production quickly," Rettig said.

And because regulators have long been familiar with the tried-and-tested vials, which have to meet strict international norms, they won't hold up the vaccine authorisation process.

To keep production moving, workers are churning out vials 24 hours a day, a typical pace in the sector, and outsiders are banned from the premises to minimise the risk of coronavirus infections.

Schott itself had an early encounter with the virus at its Mitterteich plant in Bavaria, where it manufactures glass tubes that can be turned into vials.

The town became one of Germany's first coronavirus hotspots in March after a beer festival, and Rettig said several Schott workers from the Czech Republic ended up "not seeing friends and family for weeks" as borders slammed shut.

- 'Gold standard' -

Borosilicate glass was invented around 1890 by Otto Schott, a chemist from a family of glassmakers. Together with scientists Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss, he set up a lab that would lay the foundation for modern glass technology.

What makes borosilicate glass special is that it can handle temperatures from -80 to 500 degrees Celsius, which is handy considering the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine needs to be stored at a frigid -70 degrees.

It is also chemically inert, meaning there is no chemical interaction between the container and the liquid inside it, preventing any interference that could potentially harm the vaccine.

Borosilicate glass is considered "the gold standard" for packaging drugs, Rettig said.

The Schott company, wholly owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, now has over 16,000 employees in more than 30 countries and reported revenues of 2.2 billion euros ($2.6 billion) in 2018-2019.

Its other products range from specialist cabin lighting in aeroplanes to ceramic cooktops, as well as microscope slides being used in rapid Covid-19 antibody testing, and medical lights that help doctors examine respiratory tracts.

While vial makers aren't quite grabbing the headlines as much as vaccine developers, Rettig said Schott employees "are proud to contribute to the fight against the coronavirus".

As expectations grow that the first Covid-19 jabs will be administered in a matter of weeks, German glassmaker Schott is quietly doing what it has been for months: churning out vials that will hold the vaccine.

- Ramping up - In a lucky break, the industry was already seeing rising demand from China and other countries for top-level Type 1 borosilicate glass products, meaning Schott and other major players were building up capacity well before the pandemic struck. - 'Gold standard' - Borosilicate glass was invented around 1890 by Otto Schott, a chemist from a family of glassmakers.

Germany on Monday accused Turkey of obstructing peace in Libya after it prevented German forces belonging to a European Union military mission carrying out a full search of a Turkish cargo ship that they suspected of taking weapons to Libya.

Soldiers from the frigate Hamburg boarded the Turkish freighter, the Rosaline A, overnight, but had to abandon checks and withdraw after Turkey protested to the EU mission, the German defence ministry said.

Britain, France, Germany and Italy in a joint statement urged "all Libyan and international parties to refrain from any parallel and uncoordinated initiative" that risked undermining the UN-led efforts.

This incident was reported by four children, Luisa, Romy, Celina and Luis to their school teacher. She, then, asked them to sketch the incident and took the drawings to the local police to report the incident.

These sketches, the police department claims, helped them identify the car driver. The police posted two of these drawings and claimed that the third one shows the driver in a more detailed manner.

Germany on Friday charged 12 men with plotting well-funded, armed attacks on mosques in which they planned to kill or injure as many Muslims as possible.

German prosecutors said in a statement "They aimed through attacks on mosques and the killing and wounding of as many Muslims as possible to create civil war-like conditions."

The suspects, 11 gang members, and one accomplice had met regularly to plan, with all but one of them pledging to contribute thousands towards a $59,000 pot to finance the purchase of weapons.

It comes as the European Union ministers agreed to reinforce security at the bloc's external borders and to impose tougher controls on violent extremism online.

The suspects, aged between 31 and 61, are all Germans, and all but one of them has been detained. The twelfth is still at large, prosecutors in the southeastern city of Stuttgart said.

Another suspect had died while in custody. A prosecution official said he had killed himself and that there was nothing to indicate foul play.

German prosecutors said in a statement "They aimed through attacks on mosques and the killing and wounding of as many Muslims as possible to create civil war-like conditions." The suspects, 11 gang members, and one accomplice had met regularly to plan, with all but one of them pledging to contribute thousands towards a $59,000 pot to finance the purchase of weapons. The official said cash sums in the "mid-four-digit range" had been found in suspects' houses.
